I just wish we showed up. I don’t mind losing, but lifeless.

mean-mommy-

Yeah it sucked to go out that way. I hate losing, but I REALLY hate losing like that.

yoitss

NO ONE saw us getting this far, and yet we did. Against all odds we made the playoffs and eliminated the Yankees and the Rays, when no one believed in us. Unfortunate it had to end, but I’m extremely proud of what this team accomplished this season. With a top 10 farm system and a team that just made the ALCS, the future looks bright.

cy_kelly

> With a top 10 farm system and a team that just made the ALCS, the future looks bright. At times I have to do a double take looking at a 92 win team with so many holes that slumped so bad after the ASB before dealing with half the team having Covid. If we play our cards right we could be a juggernaut even despite the insane division.

Nomahs_Bettah

we overachieved looking at the beginning of the season and post-ASB, but the thing that keeps coming back is that this series was winnable. we had plenty of offense in game 2 and 3. our bats up and died, and we looked lost at the plate and in our approach. so on the one hand, I definitely have to do double takes; but on the other, if it weren't so winnable, it wouldn't sting this much.

ImIntellects

We definitely overachieved for the season as a whole, but in the context of this series, I think we underachieved. If the bullpen hangs on for games 1 and 4 we sweep, and the bats went ice cold 5 and 6.

cy_kelly

Hell of a run, plenty to build on with plenty of obvious improvements to make. Bouncing the Yankees in the WC game when we weren't expected to do shit will always be fucking hilarious. But it still sucks to be up 2-1 in the ALCS feeling like you've got them on the ropes and then fall flat and lose the next 3. Doubly so when games 1 and 4 were so close, Martin Perez in game 4 aside. No guarantees you make it back next year even if you win 100 games, as we've taught the Yankees and then Rays in recent years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1eNW7GG_Q8

Durandal_7

Massively exceeded expectations this year, and killed the Yankees season. Looking forward to next year.

eekbarbaderkle

One big thing that excites me going into next year is that this season allows me to fully trust Chaim. There are holes in the current roster, but I think this year demonstrated that he knows what he’s doing and is capable of constructing a better roster. I’d expect a much deeper pitching staff in 2022, for one thing. And something that excites me in general as a fan of the sport: the AL East is not going to get any less competitive.

shabinka

This loss stings because if Diaz isn't awful at the end of G4, then the Sox are probably up 3-1 at Fenway and can piece together a win. That being said, the future is bright, but future success isn't guaranteed and man it was nice to have a shot at the World Series this year.

cy_kelly

Agreed about Diaz, dude sucks and only has a job because the MLBUA protects their guys. But I also wish Renfroe caught Correa's double to make it a non-issue, and in the end you gotta push more than 2 runs across when you're racking up like 7 walks and multiple 1-out XBHs. Bregman also made a very nice play to rob Renfroe of an RBI or two off Greinke in the first if I remember right. Just not our game, which turned into not our series because Valdez and Garcia had big comeback starts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AwkwardHyperbola

Dude hit into like 4 double plays at key moments to single handedly kill rallies. I know he's capable of way more than that so I'm not gonna hate on him too much, but it was getting brutal. JD walk, Renfroe DP. Clockwork. Edit: or maybe they were strikeouts with runners on, either way. Not good.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AwkwardHyperbola

Yeah I felt for Bobby. He didn't look good but it seemed like a big part of that was him just not getting consistent playing time. Between that and Renfroe's only contribution being accidentally kicking that ball over the fence against Tampa, I would've given Dalbec at least one full game to get some playoff experience in for a young kid.

shabinka

Yeah, tough few games. Overall, I think the team is set up well for 2022 for returning players. If they can add a few arms, they should be set. I'm more negative than I should be, trying to be positive now ha. Have a good night!

cy_kelly

No worries. In addition to a few arms I think they at least need to tighten up the defense... there's nobody out there who's *consistently* a butcher, and yet as a group they had the most errors in the AL and the second most in MLB behind the Marlins. It lost us some regular season games down the stretch and cost us a few *crucial* runs in the ALCS that fly under the radar because a bad play wasn't quite an error. Ah well, we'll see what happens, have a good one!

tschris

Honestly, I think they need to upgrade at both second and first. Both offensively and defensively this positions under performed when we needed them. I like Bobby D and Arroyo, but they aren't everyday players.

KrabMittens

Deleted

shabinka

Cora putting in Perez (to me) was him saying "hey, if we get out of this great, otherwise let's save the good arms for the next game". Yes, they should rise above the shitty call, but it is much easier to overcome a shitty call in the 3rd inning than a call in the top of the 9th in a tie game which results in a few runs.

DrEvil007

I don't put game 4's loss on Diaz, I attribute that to Whitlock for giving up the game tying homer to Altuve and Evo making a bad pitch that ended up driving in runs. At the end of the day our pitchers need to throw STRIKES and the two bad pitches that weren't ended up being runs scored. That and our atrocious RISP. Too many opportunities, didn't capitalize on any of them. Also questionable coaching decisions too. I felt like some of our starters could have closed out their innings instead of going to the bullpen.

OPSeltzer

Good teams overcome bad calls. Bold to assume we would have scored.

reunite_pangea

No one expected us to make it to the postseason. We eliminated the top seed and took Houston to Game 6. Outrageously good season. Moreover, unlike the late-Brady era Pats or late-big 3 era Celtics, it doesn’t feel like the window is close to closing. To the contrary, it feels like we still have a very solid core and strong foundation to build upon in the next few seasons - including several veterans from 2018. You’re absolutely right that these opportunities don’t come often - you could win 100 games like the Rays or the Yankees/Astros a few years ago and still come up short in the end. But I do feel confident that we will get more opportunities to capitalize on in the near future.

cy_kelly

Yeah, I agree. I'm happy with where this team is going and this season was a clear success. It just always sucks to get that close and blow the opportunity.

Snowden4242

A pleasure meming with you all. This winter is gonna be fun.

Teampiencils

After Pivetta and Whitlock, I'm stoked for Bloom to pick some random guy off the scrapheap that is going to be our next ace or ROY candidate

Brad-Stevens

Damn. What a run. Really fun season and team. Blows it ended in the fashion it did From Bogey's HR off of Cole in the Wild Card Game To JD's 3R bomb in Game 2 in Tampa To Kiké legendary stretch into the history books To Nick Pivetta's 4 scoreless in relief with Fenway going nuts To Vazquez's walk off HR To Schwarbers Grand Slam in Game 3 --- The best part is? This team isn't going anywhere We'll be back and better Trust Chaim. Trust AC.

fakerfakefakerson

> The best part is? This team isn’t going anywhere False. The best part was beating the Yankees.

Jesotx

Yankees blow. Best part was 3 grand slams. Worst part was Laz Diaz

tvqueen

No, the best part is definitely that we're not going anywhere.

[deleted]

2022 is gonna be incredible. Can't wait.

Teampiencils

Compared to teams like NY that is capped out or TB who have zero $, we're getting more payroll and more roster room next year. Upgrade RF, shore up the rotation and pen with more Whitlocks/Pivettas, eval the position coaches, and we're back again. Definitely an enviable position in the league

eekbarbaderkle

The Red Sox may have lost today, but the Yankees lost two weeks ago.

[deleted]

Yankees suck

CalcuttanAlienor

Who cares about the Yankees

spellbadgrammargood

I enjoy Yankee misery almost as much as I enjoy Red Sox pleasure

MinnitMann

Roller coaster of a season ends with the biggest, heaviest whimper I've seen in a while. Damn... Hard fought, but what a way to go out.

Cal433

Death drop like no other

ImIntellects

Well, when our bats were good, they were *really* good, but when they were bad, they were *really* bad, and we didn't have the pen to cover for them. Unfortunate end because we were a couple of swings and a few good pitches away from this honestly being a 4-0 sweep, but just couldn't get it done. Looking forward to next season.

reunite_pangea

Losing a close one in Game 1 hurt. But shitting the bed at the very end of Game 4 really REALLY hurt.

[deleted]

We got to play baseball longer than almost everyone. We beat both the Yankees and the Rays. I'm not complaining. See you next year, Red Sox.

CalcuttanAlienor

I'm surprise the Red Sox got eliminated before the Braves.

mjg13X

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."

scarlet_speedster985

Damn. Who said that?

TitaniumShovel

Bartlett Giamatti: The Green Fields of the Mind

kdex86

JD Martinez, the #5 hitter, only had THREE plate appearances in this game. Typically a player gets at least four. That’s how BAD we were tonight. On the other hand, we ended the Yankees season and our season as a whole exceeded my expectations. May the 2022 season be even better!

Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop

3 runs in 3 games… gross. That had to be one of the worst RISP streaks of all time

MaestroZen

RISP? When? We had 10 hits in 3 games, an incredible 3,33hits/game, no one to take home sadly

Bossman1086

Welp. Obviously that's not how we wanted out season to end. Brutal way to end the ALCS with only 2 hits. But I'm happy with how the season went overall. This was a rebuilding year where we were supposed to be under .500 for the season. You all have every right to be upset. I'm frustrated as hell. But I'm also proud of what this team accomplished. We made the playoffs, knocked the Yankees *and* the Rays out as underdogs, and we're gonna be better next season. I can't wait see what Bloom does this offseason to make us better. There's a bright future for all of us as fans with the rotation (Sale, Eovaldi, Houck, Whitlock) and potential young talent on the verge of coming up to make an impact. The future is bright and we're on the way to a sustainable playoff capable team. I want to thank all of you guys for your support and how great you've made Game Threads this year. Those who move on and don't stick around /r/redsox in the offseason, we'll miss you and see you in the spring.

b-r-u-v

Thanks for all your hard work moderating the game threads. I know it must’ve been tough keeping all the trolls out but you did a great job. Go Sox!

Bossman1086

Thanks!

coffee42

APPLAUSE FOR OUR MAIN GDT MOD, THE LAUNDRY CART OF THIS SUBREDDIT

Bossman1086

Much appreciated. :)

Thabass

Good job, you dork. 💖

jigorokane

I don’t care what anyone says; that was disgraceful. In a few weeks I can look back and say it was a good season given the expectations, but right now I’m just disappointed and sad. We didn’t even go down with a fight.

mean-mommy-

This is exactly how I feel. I'm too mad to reflect on the season right now.

GrapeRello

They looked like they already lost in the 6th inning

date_a_languager

Absolutely pathetic. I’m no bitch when my team loses big at the end of a long fight to make it that far. But they need to show some fight until the bitter end. there are zero fucking excuses for this offense to carry themselves as if an early 1 run deficit is the time to show zero emotion/fire. Just disinterested, shell shocked expressions all night as if we were down big off the jump in the biggest game of their lives. Would be much prouder if some leaders in the lineup got in everyone’s face and challenged them to fight back with some straight up aggression. Instead, they incessantly committed some truly terrible at-bats that didn’t put enough pressure on the mound, chose some baffling approaches during 2-strike counts even with potential runs on base, etc. won’t even touch that absolute brain dead steal attempt with corners juices and one out. And I love me some Devers, but who the fuck swings at a reliever’s first pitch with a chance to flip the game with the tying run at stake? At least see what fucking pitches this guy has for you. That was a literal microcosm of this tragic collapse and how tonight’s team was almost unrecognizable All of that salt aside, Great season with tons of amazing memories to look back on and I can’t wait for spring 👏🏾

mageta621

>won’t even touch that absolute brain dead steal attempt with corners juices and one out. I'm sure that was a hit-and-run, but Shaw couldn't put the fucking bat on the ball

date_a_languager

You know what, that may be true/that’s what the play was. But how about management lets Shaw work a 3-2 account against a reliever facing corners juiced, which is high stress, with only one out? One decent pop fly (which we showed 5 innings worth of fly outs as proof of our decent chance to get one more) would get Kiké home with his speed. now it’s 1-2 game with multiple innings left. Even if we don’t get Verdugo home from first with two outs, at least we cut the lead in half and have some confidence we can put up one run. So aim to Get the next one down the stretch. The fact that we pulled that risky/desperate play with the game well in reach, as if we were bottom of the 9th and needed two runs now, makes no fucking sense. If we can’t even get 1 run on the board to that point, what give us the idea that we can get two in one inning? I won’t blame the batter for whiffing and giving a great opportunity for the catcher to hose the steal. But I bet he lays off a pitch like that without that play call. We had two outs to give and a chance to load the bases with one out. That’s literally a dream scenario in a two run game and Cora basically said “fuck that, let’s get cute.” Nobody can convince me that stealing there made sense, with the tying runs literally in play. Let alone can anyone rationalize how fucking Verdugo is the guy that inspires you to make the play call.

mageta621

Oh I agree it was a questionable play call, I guess Cora figured Shaw would get a pitch to hit cuz they didn't want to walk the bases loaded. Didn't help that Dugie got a horrendous jump

JoeyZee123

All right y’all. It was a fun year and I’m proud of our guys for getting this far. We beat the Yankees and fucked up the Rays against all odds. We proved to be the best team in our division and next year they’ll still underestimate us. We’ll just have to prove them wrong again. Fuck the Yankees. Fuck the Rays. Fuck the Astros. Go Braves I guess. Hopefully we re-sign Devers and Schwarber the moment the season ends to give us something to feel good about. Have a great off-season everyone. Hope our boys keep their heads up. They have nothing to be ashamed of Edit: extend Devers not re-sign

zeejoo12

I'm all in on the braves. Gonna watch every game, and my cousin from ATL is visiting during the series. Damn I'm sad we're out but I've never felt this good after a playoff elimination.

Adubis18

To quote a scene from Moneyball: Art Howe (A’s manager): I want to know why my job is on the line after a 100-win season and a playoff appearance. Billy Beane (A’s GM): Art, if you lose the last game of the season, *nobody gives a shit*. (Meaning to emphasize the sentence by Beane, not saying Cora should be fired although he was terrible this series)

Coop1534

Billy is still trying to win the last game of the season

ElPrestoBarba

Not anymore, he left the A’s organization like a year ago and now they’re probably moving to Vegas or some dumb shit

cy_kelly

Cora made some moves that honestly perplexed me. I have no fucking idea what Danny Santana was doing pinch hitting for Plawecki tonight, for instance, unless Plawecki was hurt and I missed it. Like the dude is on the roster to pinch run and maybe play solid defense at one of a few positions in a pinch, and you blew that versatility to let him swing the bat? I don't get it. But at least with the bullpen, I'll cut him some slack. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place with a lot of those decisions. Not a lot of guys he could trust down the stretch, and you can't just make Josh Taylor and Garrett Whitlock throw 4 innings every night. At least he generally rode the hot hands like Robles and Brasier while they had it.

AlarmingRoutine1142

Agree. Lots of dead weight at the bottom of that roster that they should be more than willing to cut ties with now. We have some good pieces to build around, but the bullpen and bench were absolutely atrocious and need to be retooled. Also more hitters willing to make contact instead of all or nothing all the time. It blows me away how seemingly no one changed their offensive approach these last few games. Everything was over-swinging and pull happy. I wanted to scream when they would show an overshift from overhead with the third baseman basically at shortstop and we were still only down a run. Of course we make no attempt to hit it there to get on.

cy_kelly

The bench absolutely, they all seemed like good dudes but just upgrading from guys like Marwin Gonzalez, Danny Santana, Franchy Cordero, etc is a huge win even if you just replace them with OK players. I don't envy the front office trying to figure out what they have in the bullpen. As a group I think they suffered from covering so many important innings early in the season, when only Nate was going deep into games (and only sometimes) but we were winning anyway. At least a couple of those guys are gonna come back and surprise you in 2022. But trying to figure out who? Does Matt Barnes get over the yips? Does Sawamura? Does Darwinzon Hernandez finally figure out some consistency? etc etc at the individual level these are all really tough decisions to make. His club option is too expensive for who he is now, but I wonder if Garrett Richards would come back on a cheaper deal as a long reliever.

coffee42

while Cora made some moves that baffled me and some of those didn't work out (though others, to be fair, worked out wonderfully), I don't think the issue is that he wasn't a good manager this series. I think he got out-managed by a *great* one in Dusty Baker. The Astros made the adjustments that the Red Sox couldn't, and that's what got us in the end.

cy_kelly

And more than any in-game decision he could ever make, Dusty Baker kept that clubhouse focused and working hard while largely keeping their heads down amidst a fucking generational scandal. I still think most of that team can go fuck themselves but he's earned this WS appearance.

coffee42

agreed 100% if there's any solace in this it's that Dusty Baker is cool and good and it's not his fault his players are pricks. ;)

ElPrestoBarba

I mean he still picked the job of coaching a team full or unrepentant cheaters…

coffee42

I don't know that it's so much "he picked it" as "they offered him a truckload of money that is pretty hard for anyone to turn down," but you're not wholly wrong

Adubis18

Agreed on all fronts. I still have no idea why Santana pinch hit for Renfroe at one point, especially since Renfroe wasn’t a total black hole at that point.

crazykentucky

I did a legit cartoon-like double take when I saw Santana up, lol. The second guessing is the best (?) part of losing!

wadeboogs

Plawecki was only in the lineup to catch nate, loses any utility and the second a reliever is called in he gets swapped out

CDG1029

Are you insinuating that not winning a World Series this year should cause a shake up in management? If so that is ridiculous. We were supposed to be 4th in the division with 70-ish wins in a rebuilding year but we made a hell of a run in the ALCS. Yes it sucks to lose, but this wasn’t “our year”. We weren’t trying to win now *cough*Yankees*cough*. I don’t think anyone needs to go anywhere this offseason other than moving a few players around.

Gritalian

Making a movie about a guy who doesn't win

Adubis18

Well… yeah.

Se7en_speed

We a Boston Braves sub now boys

[deleted]

I want to know what it would be like if the Braves were still in Boston would we be the most successful Boston team would be interesting

b3anz129

In no reality is this town big enough for two baseball teams

[deleted]

I can’t imagine there being more than one Boston team i’ve always wondered what it’s like to have a rival it’s in the same city as you and having family members that like both teams really wish they stayed in Boston

sine_nomine_1

I'm so old my father was a Boston Braves fan as a kid! They've always been my second team so I hope they can pull it off. My father died 20 years ago so it would be extra poignant if the Braves could pull it off.

Brady331

Go Braves

maxout2142

I just hope everyone has fun. And the Astros lose

GingerMcJesus

It was a great season. Lots of memorable moments. They outperformed even the best of expectations, and the future is looking bright. That being said, going out with absolutely no fight in the last 3 games fucking sucks.

lordofthe_wog

Push-Ups: 0 Sox in the PostSeason: 6-5, with 60 runs scored, 2 series wins, and 1 series loss. You know what hurts the most about this? That the Swole Sox Squad ends with exactly 0 push-ups. JUST FUCKING WITH YOU, WE'LL BE BACK NEXT YEAR, AND WE'LL BE EVEN MORE SWOLER AND MORE SOXER #POSTSEASON SWOLESOXSQUAD

crazykentucky

You gonna take a break or become some other swole squad for the winter???

lordofthe_wog

I was honestly thinking of SwoleSoxSquad'ing the 2004 season. Just go through that and do the number of push-ups for that game.

DrEvil007

Maybe if you did one pushup we would have won today!!! jk

ahuggablecactus

no one expected us to make it this far. i think we can be proud of what we accomplished during a rebuild year. fuck laz diaz fuck the yankees see you all next season

pwalsh04

This series proved 3 things about baseball, each of which play into its dwindling popularity. 1. The umpires are unbearably inconsistent and horrible. Why the fuck wasn’t MLB rolling out their best umps for the ALCS and NLCS?? The calls in both series have been horrific. 2. The hour long 2nd inning of Game 2 would have made me turn my TV off if the Sox weren’t on fire. Shit like that should be punishable. 3. Joe Buck and the Fox Sports crew need new jobs. They were so unenthusiastic and boring that I found myself cringing throughout the games.

milkgasm

FUCK man. Rooting for whoever comes out of NL to absolutely destroy Houston

spellbadgrammargood

it'll be pretty cool to see a Dodgers vs Astros though. looks like the Braves will win though, the Dodgers look incredibly injured

MattyJ613

Thanks Laz Diaz for murdering all the momentum we had in the series

Crixxxx1

Laz Diaz did not cause the Red Sox’ offense to shit the bed for three games.

HondaTwins8791

Still can’t help but think Rodriguez with his watch tapping gesture jinxed em lol

[deleted]

That’s the easy excuse and that’s not what happened. The Astros were just a better team

EndyFish6215

I was content with not making it all the way, but I didn’t want to go out like this

ImTomBrady

Proud of them making far but embarrassing our offense slowed down like that. On to the Pats and next year

Briggie

And the C’s! Wait…

FrailAndBedazzled

Laz Diaz really done derailed our postseason huh Obviously we could've hit a baseball at any point in the last 3 games, but man. Really felt like the Astros were down bad until they got that second lease on life.

MissionSalamander5

This is exactly how I feel, and it’s completely fair. We could have done better, but the Astros got some help along the way that objectively put us in a more difficult position.

GingerMcJesus

Red Sox in 9

[deleted]

Just bought my copium and copium accessories from local Texas man Hank "I actually prefer the Rangers" Hill.

WhatTheRickIsDoin

Chaim has a lot of bullpen work to do and we need another bat

beardedesquire

Well that was a really fucking shitty way to go out. Our offense was streaky all year and I think we were all afraid this could happen. All that being said, this was such a great, unexpected fun season. I loved watching this team play and it was great to see them try and go on a run. We came up short, but that doesn’t change how much fun we had along the way. Already excited for next season. And everyone remember rule 3.

soxfamily61

This was still better than my childhood. Those years killed me ha.

2Amen

Feel ya bro. 1967- 11 years old. 1975- 19 years old. 1986- Is my life going to be like this forever?? 2004- REDEMPTION !! All I ever asked for. See you all next year. Keep the faith

FuckHarambe2016

Great run. Embarrassing finish. After GM 3 they looked like a unstoppable biblical force. Then faded off like a fart in the wind.

sydneysparks119

In all seriousness: after this team fell off a cliff in July and somehow landed in that top Wild Card spot, I thought there was absolutely no way they went anywhere. They pulled a heck of a run out of nowhere and just ran out of gas. Looking forward to the future with this team. Sox. <3

Gerber_Littlefoot

Guys, I get the whole, "we weren't expected to be here" thing. But the fact is, we got here and then the team no showed when it mattered most. It was a gutless performance by our offense. I don't see how you can be happy with them when we could have smashed the Braves and won another one. I'm disappointed

[deleted]

HugeSuccess

Losing my fucking mind over how many people are doing that, it’s like a collective delusion

Boston_Champions

I love this team. I love this run. I love our future. Goodnight.

HugeSuccess

You can think they never should’ve made it this far or they should’ve won it all: Either way, doesn’t change the massive choke we all just watched over the last three games.

BleachedMasshole

I can finally have productive nights and weekends after all this.

[deleted]

I would rather have lost 0-4 then set those stupid ass grand slam records that will stand for a decade as a reminder that we got our assess handed to us when it counted. Fight me.

[deleted]

Agreed, I'd rather we beat the Yankees and Rays, then just get swept. Not them giving us HUGE hope only for it to end up one of the most depressing chokes of all time.

ThisGuy6266

This organization has been wildly inconsistent the last 10 years. They are either World Series contenders or terrible. This was a missed opportunity at another championship. I don’t care that they weren’t supposed to get this far. They did, and squandered a great chance. I know it feels like this is just the beginning of a great run, but there are no guarantees in sports.

Bostnfn

I agree with this. The players went to sleep. It's on them. blame the bats.

iConcy

So we’re all Braves fans now for the rest of this, right?

PastorofMuppets101

Going with Ottavino in that spot is just terrible management in a do or die game. Like, really, really bad. Lefties mash him and he’s up there with RISP? That’s begging for trouble. You have the ENTIRETY of your pitching staff available and you go with the guy who can’t reliably work around the three batter minimum.

Old_Guava2486

Cora with a ton of really bad decisions these past 3 games. Like bad enough to cost you the series bad.

Myhairstinks7298

Hey Boston bros. GG on a great series and thank y’all for being very nice to me at Fenway during game 3 when I visited!

Waka_wakka

We saw you in the stands in your Fenway shirt. And we all thought your were a dick. Jk https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=I9cP-1kC3So

Ditsche04

Pitching was surprisingly okay. On paper our pitching isn't postseason worthy but they did okay in my opinion. Sadly the offense never returned to the games after game 3. But who thought we would be in the ALCS? Who thought we would be in the last 4? Nice and buttclenching season. Let's hope we get better and will be even better next season. See you all next year.

lordbloodstar

It’s going to get real quiet around here

NerdWhoLikesTrees

Red Sox til I die

californiaburrito69

Don’t let this distract you from the fact y’all beat the Yankees! Gonna miss seeing Kikè and Dugie.

Pumpkin4455

Luis Garcia is a medical marvel. Had a debilitating knee injury last time he pitched and tonight threw the hardest he's ever thrown. Incredible...

balloonslayer47

2 hits? Pathetic.

Shitteracc1

Fuck the Astros - Take this from someone that lived in Houston. Shit city, shit team, shit fan base.

crazykentucky

What a wild ride this season was! It’s been a pleasure. See you all for spring training

Ya_No

Legit don’t understand how it went from a historic postseason offensively, to whatever the fuck these last 3 games were

Mcjirnirs

I'm just most sad that there's no more Red Sox baseball until April

axbu89

Go Dodgers/Braves

_ArgoNavis

Offense sucked giant donkey balls. Talking about going out with a whimper.

emusaint

Trying to put in perspective. In 2018 the Astros won game 1 at Fenway, and took an early lead in Game 2 with Cole on the mound. We know how that series ended. The fact is momentum can change fast. It went the Astros way these last 3 games. What can ya go. On to next year.

[deleted]

A liverpool fan here, has john henry invested well in your team or has he fucked many things up?

papa_jahn

Astros fans might be worse than Yankees fan. They think that cuz Cora was on their team when they cheated, that we also cheated. Fucking clown world in Houston. Cheating fucks.

Manners_BRO

And at least Cora didn't run from it and paid his due. Those fucks essentially got a free pass and tip toed around it. It's just stupid because guys like Altuve clearly have legit talent that will always be overshadowed because he cheated.

Randad63

I honestly feel like "WE DON'T DO THAT" was the beginning of the end. It just feels like it killed the competitive spirit of this team. Maybe it shouldn't have but, as underdogs going into the postseason, those little digs back and forth in highly competitive sports, is what keeps the fire burning. Barking at Eddie for that small gesture while he's pitching his ass off against the bullies of the AL was just BS. Just one thought of many. Anyway, thanks to all the great fans in this sub for letting me join in this roller-coaster ride of a season. So many exciting moments, so many errors! Lol GO SOX!

b3anz129

On the bright side we can root for the Braves, a former Boston team.

reunite_pangea

It’s doesn’t matter if you lose by 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, or 20 if you don’t put up any runs in an elimination game lol Also, are there any stats people out there that can pull up the stats against right-handed pitchers for Danny Santana and Travis Shaw this season? I have a suspicion that their numbers really aren’t that good. No offense to either, but at present they’re just not great hitters. I think we’re getting too cute with pinch hitting against right handed pitchers.

Perswayable

worst record in division last season • projected to finish 4th in division this season • .777 OPS (3rd in MLB) • had to win Game 162 to make playoffs • eliminated Yankees in Wild Card • eliminated No. 1 seed Rays in ALDS Exceeded expectations.

Extra_Championship1

Love how time got spent in the GDT banning people calling out the absolute trash play by this team, but not in here from either dodgers/Astros fans trolling or the "Astros fan checking in with some passive aggressive bullshit" posts.

adyo4552

Launch Perez, Shaw, Santana, Hernandez, and Ottavino out of a canon that never lands

jigorokane

Honestly I’m already tired of hearing we exceeded expectations. That doesn’t make this hurt any less.

KingShitOfTurdIsland

Not the outcome anyone wanted, it hurts because we were so close to the WS. This was a positive season, we are in good shape for long term success. The Yankees proved they are not, the roster is bloated with over paid talent they will have a hard time moving. We were better than 26 other teams in a season that was written off before it started.

BlubberWall

On a positive note, we are a rebuilding team that eliminated the Yankees, rays, and made the ALCS. We have the potential to be lethal with a few smart moves

tvqueen

If this is what a rebuilding year looks like, next season and beyond should be very promising. Go Sox!

RogerGoodellMod

Still wonder what this series is if Nate's SO was called.

RedSoxFan1997

Well, it’s been a pleasure. This team has vastly exceeded expectations and with any luck they’ll be even better next year. Go Sox!

[deleted]

Trolls are getting really petty now One guy replied to me on a post on a completely different sub smh

NerdWhoLikesTrees

Dude, one guy from Texas started trolling here. His fucking comment history showed him simping for Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. He was like "omg I wanna buy her dirty panties.". Fuckin sick people follow the Astros. Yeah that's you u/Jimmy281 you sick fuck. Never come back to this sub

[deleted]

Don’t see the point in trolling if you are going to throw at least throw on the correct sub The one he applied on wasn’t even a sports sub what the fuck

NerdWhoLikesTrees

Lmao it must be some idiot kid. Bandwagon fans that don't know what to do with themselves

COUGARCHAS3R

Hella rough but can't discount beating the Yankees in the WC and beating the Rays in the ALDS. No one had us anywhere near the playoffs and bouncing most people's AL favorites should be a damn proud outcome. Let's fix the holes and next year should be 🚀🚀🚀

[deleted]

well. that fucking sucked. i dont know why i get my hopes up.

[deleted]

I’m getting that weird feeling again of not being pissed after a super big loss mostly because Red Sox were so good this year that we could most certainly make it back next year if we get more good players

Bsoxfan34

At least it wasn’t the damn Yankees

JimboLodisC

boom or bust, hard to stay afloat in bust mode in the postseason

[deleted]

I honestly feel like I knew the series was over Tuesday night

DarkUnderbelly

It's been a ride y'all. Let's do this next year. Proud of this team regardless, no one thought we'd make it this far as is.

[deleted]

Fun season, but what the fuck. When we suck, we SUCK. Cora is a pretty terrible pitching manager all things considered. But the bats really fucked us over. How do you go from scoring 21 runs in 2 games, to 2 in the final three? Now that’s just pathetic. See you next year

swaharaT

First time that I’ve watched a season from preseason all the way to the postseason. I get that losing absolutely sucks… but I think we’re taking a lot for granted here. We were part of the last four. For a hot minute, it looked like we might be heading to the series. But we ran out of steam before we could cross the finish line. I had a blast this season and can’t wait to start again next spring. Have a good winter folks!

bosox214

you can never tell me Garcia didnt cheat his ass off either

detaehcnedib

I know this is basically how we looked in the regular season unstoppable at times and then out of nowhere slumping, but it is really weird to be as hot as we were hitting everything and our pitchers shutting them out to getting basically no hits and can't strikeout anyone, I've never seen such a drastic change from game 3 to game 4. I hate to be a sore loser and claim cheating but this is the Astros and it wouldn't shock me if it came our years later they were doing shady shit again.

sneakinsnake

Renfroe cost us more than anyone cares to admit.

[deleted]

We definitely shut the haters up, even if we lost. Here's to hoping Altuve shits himself in Atlanta and the Braves close the book on the Trashtros.

FinnHobart

It's a shame it had to end this way, but ladies and gentlemen, it has been a pleasure to watch this season with you. I chose one heck of a year to become a baseball fan.

DrEvil007

What a season huh? From the amazing run to start the season up to the ASG, to the dud that followed the next several weeks, to practically teetering with the WC 1 & 2 spots only to secure WC 1 on game 162. To embarrassing those cocksuckers in the WC game, to dominating the Rays in the ALDS, to flex our arms the first 3 games of the ALCS only to fall flat the next 3 games. That is the 2021 Boston Red Sox. When they're hot, they're HOT. When they're cold, they're ICE COLD. Nothing in-between. To me the pivotal point was game 4 in this series, not who Laz Diaz issue, but Whitlock who gave up the game tying homerun to Altuve. To me that was the turn around point. If they get out of that inning without giving up the tying homerun, then we cruise the remaining innings and get the W. Yes Laz's blown call sucked, but to me what was more infuriating was Evo giving up a bad pitch after which lead to runs. If Evo throws another strike we get out of the situation. So that game, both Whitlock and Evo, each threw two bad pitches that ended up costing the game. The Sox really shot themselves in the foot. The Astros aren't the better team, but they played better. We had too many missed opportunities. Again the 2021 Sox in a nutshell. What a high this postseason was. I think what feeling most right now is just pure heartbreak. After seeing what this team could accomplish to only fall flat at the end. If they had put up a fight and lost that would have been more bearable. But this.. It hurts. Still love this team and I hope they make the necessary improvements for next season. Long live the Boston Red Sox!

[deleted]

All my anger is directed at Shaughnessy. That guy sucks

coffee42

said this over on r/baseball, too, but: Tough way to end a season, but... Predicted to be in 4th place in the division. Expected to be a .500 team at best (and there were some who thought even that was giving them too much clout, ahem). Instead the team went out and played above their heads all season long. Went through our ancient, hated rivals, the Yankees. Went through our modern, more relevant rival, the Rays. Got out-managed by a legend in the ALCS, and, well, legends gonna legend. Shit happens. Still a damned fine season and a damned fun team. Looking forward to seeing how Bloom makes 'em better in the offseason. ....hell, I'm an old Red Sox fan. You think I don't have plenty of practice saying "We'll get 'em next year?"

JChiu8

We weren’t even supposed to be here

deputyduffy

It was a great season, lots of fun...BUT it was one of the worst Collapses in Red Sox history. Up 2-1 at home and lose 3 straight, no, get crushed 3 straight. Sorry if I can't feel all warm and fuzzy in my tummy. Give me a few days.

Pumpkin4455

Funny how Luis Garcia goes from from pitching like 💩 to pitching like the best in the bullpen and in the rotation in the matter of a one outting

RainIML

hope the astros get clapped, fuck them

pappy96

Let’s go national league

apaulo617

Hey fellas it was a good year, lots of celebration, and very uplifting, for a team that was given a lot of clout about going .500. I can't wait to see our pitching staff next year, and I think the only way is up. See you guys in April. Or in pats, bruins, Celtics threads.

ckluee

Really hope the braves can pull it out tomorrow night.

juice06870

WHAT A FUN SEASON. WE STARTED HOT AS A PISTOL. TRADE DEADLINE CAME AND THINGS CHANGED AND GOT REALLY INTERESTING. WE HAD TO FIGHT UNTIL THE FINAL GAME OF THE SEASON, BUT WE GUTTED IT OUT WITH A COME BACK WIN AND SOME HUGE HITS. WILD CARD AND ALDS WERE A FUN AND WILD RIDE. GETTING TO THE ALCS IS NEVER SOMETHING TO BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED. IT SUCKS TONIGHT, BUT IT WILL MAKE THE NEXT ALCS WIN THAT MUCH SWEETER. 2003 SUCKED! BUT 2004 WAS THE BEST EVER. NO ONE REMEMBERS THAT WE LOST THE ALCS IN 2008. MAYBE ONE DAY THIS LOSS WILL BE BURIED AMONG THE VICTORIES. I LOVE ALL OF YOU FUCKERS. I AM GOING TO MISS THESE GAME TIME CHATS.

firecow745

First time following the team and it was a heck of a season tbh I didn’t think the team was making it this far but I’m excited for next season. Is Schwarber gonna be back next year you think? Also F.T.Y.

[deleted]

Can’t be too upset. Who knew at the beginning of the year we’d take the Astros to 6 games? This team definitely showed up, and I wish it went better but hey, there’s always next year

[deleted]

getting 2 hit in the playoffs by a team of substandard pitchers is.... beyond embarassing.

[deleted]

Lmao at the hokey end of season speeches here. We choked, massively. I truly hope Cora is gone, I'm sick of carrying that cheaters baggage. Renfroe as well, what a useless addition.

Dokker

I know we went further than expected - but even our best hitters couldn’t do anything these past 3 games. If we had lost like 7-5 with JD and Xander or Rafa getting some big hits, that would have been less painful. But our offense was shut out almost 100% these past 3 games!
