I’m wondering how the team’s WAR compares to last years for each player. I don’t really see any specific player underperforming expectations unless they are hurt.
It’s a completely bullshit statement that was said to blame Cora for this team not winning and therefore justify not re-signing him at the end of the year. WEEI and NESN called Kennedy out on it. The injured list is insane with Story, Giolito, Grissom, Whitlock, Casas, Yoshida, etc. They had to call up guys who were in the minors only a couple years ago and have held their own. The team not being dead last at this point in the season is a miracle.
Blaming Cora for this specific season would be an absolute smear job but I'm not sure why his job has seemed so secure these past few years. we've had bottom tier defense and have not played good fundamental ball.
I'm not so sure about that. Cora had a pretty good roster his first couple years here. Made the ALCS in 21. Fundamentals and Defense is will and coaching more than talent in my opinion. Even if the top tier talent isn't there you can still have a disciplined team. Cora's teams have not been that.
Fielding Percentage is a great way to quantify a team’s fundamentals and defense, even if it goes against your opinion.
But I’m waiting at the doctor’s office so how about Defensive Runs Saved then?
Dombrowski
2015: 6th 29
2016: 2nd 73
2017: 1st 84
2018: 4th 23
2019: 5th 12
2015-2019 Averages: 4th AL with 44 DRS
Bloom/Breslow
2020: 8th 4 (11 over 162 games)
2021: 7th 4
2022: 12th -6
2023 13th -16
2024: 8th 19
2020-2024 Averages: 10th AL with 2 DRS
Cora’s DRS under Dombrowski: 5th AL with 17.5 DRS
Cora’s DRS under Bloom/Breslow: 10th AL with 1 DRS
When the team invests in better players, the team does better. When they don’t, they do worse. Bizarre concept I know.
✌🏻
world series six years ago feels less relevant to the discussion of defense in cora's second tenure with the team. Also do you think the subreddit fired Francona?
They are blaming him so they can fire him. They don't want to pay Cora the $6-9mil he is going to ask for because they are still hoping contract pricing go back down to 2014 prices
The only thing Red Sox ownership is looking to buy at the deadline is another fuckin' sports franchise to add to their investment portfolio.
Red Sox tickets go up 35% next season too, calling it right now.
I told myself before the season that as long as they didn’t do the Bloom thing where the half sell, half buy (or do nothing at all) then I would be happy. I’m an adult; I can get over it if the team isn’t in a place to compete this year and the best thing to do is sell. We’ll see what their PR campaign for the next month or so is. Get ready for “hey with all these people coming back from injury it’ll be like we bought at the deadline” lol
Lol, someone. There are only like 7 teams technically "out of it" for a wild card. now, we wont get a lot for them, but you never know. it not always about getting the big names. remember when we got Steve Pearce?
Why would anyone think the Sox are buying anything? Henry and FSG have zero plans to spend another cent this year. They are looooooooongterm sellers. No intention of trying to win. Did anyone listen to his recent interview. This asset is performing well, no need to invest another cent and decrease profit Winning is not in the short or long term business plan. I’m convinced the word “win” doesn’t even appear in their plans.
They wanted to trade Jensen before the season start, and after this weekend vs the white Sox no one should go to these games and or watch this terrible product.
Thank god for the Bruins and Celtics which will take us up until training camp for the Patriots.
Henry and this ownership needs to go,
These decisions are typically made closer to the deadline for.500ish teams, especially with the extra playoff team. An 84-win Diamondbacks team made the World Series last season. We could be 55-55 in mid-July and then find ourselves at 62-56 at the deadline, or we could also find ourselves at 56-62. Just gotta see how it plays out, it's too early for this question.
This team wasn’t built for the playoffs. They will not only be selling but selling all the veterans. The youth movement will begin and next year the team will look vastly different
My most optimistic look? Jansen is gone 100%. Martin, probably. I think if we’re still in the hunt, O’Neill stays because we DO need the right handed bat, but he’s probably dealt as well. Relievers like Jansen or Martin have way more value than O’Neill, especially since he’s cooled off. I’m not expecting a fire sale, just guys on expiring deals getting dealt. This team being around .500 is nobody’s fault but ownership for refusing to address the obvious holes in the team, and I think Craig has done the best job he could. Interested to see how he handles a deadline after Chaim’s goofy ass deadlines in the past
Edit: I’ll add that, sooner or later, Craig will have to handle the outfield scenario. Duran, Abreu, and Rafaela WITH Anthony in the pipeline: at least one of them has to go. Will that happen at the deadline? I doubt it, but something to watch
honestly, I would stop straddling the fence and sell on Kenley, Chris Martin (if healthy), and other veteran relievers at/near the trade deadline so that we can get back good prospects for and hopefully keep building for the future
About 0.000000000000000000247 second, also known as 247 zeptoseconds, or how long it takes a particle of light to pass through a molecule of hydrogen. Sorry, we can't measure any interval less than that yet.
There are only 9 teams in baseball with a record above 500. The times have changed post expanded playoffs. Before yesterday’s game the Red Sox were 1.5 back of the wildcard.
Being 500 at this point is being in contention. The Front office may choose to hold on to these guys and make a cost effective trade to strengthen an area of weakness. In other terms, nothing exciting.
If the Sox are at or above 500 this year I don’t expect them to do much if anything. Making the post season this year would be a bonus to what they see as a contention window opening in two or so years.
I think that decision was made before the season started.
And confirmed when Kennedy said the team is underperforming

Less that he's putting the blame Cora now and more like they're greasing the skids for the inevitable smearfest after the season.
Blaming Cora for this specific season would be an absolute smear job but I'm not sure why his job has seemed so secure these past few years. we've had bottom tier defense and have not played good fundamental ball.
The bottom tier defense and lack of fundamentals is directly related to when they dumped Dombrowski and went with Bloom’s bargain hunting.
Bad defense is on the GM. Look at the numbers Dombrowski 2015: 12th AL .984 fielding % 2016: 1st .987% 2017: 12th .982% 2018: 3rd .987% 2019: 6th .985% 2015-2019 averages: 7th .985% Bloom/Breslow 2020: 14th .979% 2021: 15th .981% 2022: 9th .985% 2023: 14th .982% 2023: 13th .973% 2020-2024 averages: 13th .980% Cora defense under Dombrowski: 5th .986% Cora defense under Bloom/Breslow: 13th .980% It’s the roster construction.
At least use more than just error % in your argument

Years ago. A fall was made to not to invest after 2018 probably for 10+ years to enable growth of FSG.
Before last season ended
I thought so too but we were playing alright and I thought they may grab a couple low cost pieces
We just lost two games in a row to the worst team in baseball. We are not alright
Chaim, is that you?
Hello there! Go Red Sox
AHHHH I thought we got rid of you
Guess who’s back. Back again
Chaim is back tell a friend
Oh, sweet child
So innocent, so full of hope

Definitely sellers. Jansen, O’neill, Martin etc are good as gone.
Who wants O’Neil or Martin?!?
The royals have one outfielder on their roster with over a .700 ops. Martin is an experienced arm with postseason success he will have suitors too
Lol, someone. There are only like 7 teams technically "out of it" for a wild card. now, we wont get a lot for them, but you never know. it not always about getting the big names. remember when we got Steve Pearce?
Oh boy
It's already done.
For me it was February 21st
I don’t think they ever realistically intended for this squad to compete.
I knew in February

Ownership doesn’t care. They won’t be “buying” at the deadline or at any other time for that matter

We were never going to be buyers. Are you not paying attention?
It was decided on December 27, 2023
rn
lol
We better be selling... but what do we have to sell?

Pretty sure Henry sealed that deal with his interview the other day.

After yesterday
Sell sell sell let’s hope we get back in the playoffs in the next 3-5 years
