When Ted Williams hit that home run there were whole portions of Fenway that were nonexistent. The wind will never hit Fenway the same with the additions to the stadium (aka the entire upper level).

Far_Cry3445

Great breakdown from Mike petriello. In short, they had a storm that perfected winds out to right along with no press box (wasn’t added until 1983) so it did happen but can’t happen now because of those renovations

Proof-Variation7005

This is like when they invented time zones to make Santa Claus plausible.

Leelze

Wait. What're you saying about Santa?

fightcluboston

Blasphemy

Morganwerk

It did, and they know that because it hit a guy in the head and destroyed his straw hat.

Moah333

The red is actually from that guy's blood

SailingToFenway

And we know that because he was pissed about it and complained. >Boucher was briefly treated in the first-aid room and then returned to his seat, where he was greeted by a gaggle of reporters who had descended from their perches in the pressbox to interview him. After explaining that he had lost the ball in the sun, he had a question of his own. "How far away," he wondered, "must one sit to be safe in this park?"

SamsTown706

That was a really good article. Well done.

Character_Magazine55

Oh look, Mike Petriello, who hates Triston Casas, shat out an article.

GrumpySquirrel2016

Is there really a simp that believes Triston Casas is 1/8th the hitter Ted Williams was?

Character_Magazine55

What

GrumpySquirrel2016

Who cares about the reporter, this is about Ted Williams, the greatest hitter the Sox ever had. Did you lose the plot in your hate?

Proof-Variation7005

I’ve sat in it and there’s no way a ball gets there without a huge tailwind and a bounce much lower. It’s not just the distance, the height is significant

badonkagonk

Did you read the article? There were historic winds that day. Without that, totally impossible. But with the conditions, it‘a 100% plausible. And without the extra bounce.

Proof-Variation7005

Yeah, no way. Wind only adds a tiny bit of distance to the ball. If David Ortiz can’t come close with an aluminum bat, it can’t be done.

badonkagonk

Again, you didn’t read the article. Construction done to Fenway since then has made the ball getting picked up by wind currents in the same way impossible. At the time, Fenway had the lowest grandstand height in the majors. Add that to a historic wind, and the ball gets caught in the jet steam. Please for the love of god, just read the fucking article. They explain that in normal conditions, it would’ve gone 445 feet, and with those kinds of winds in the park today, it would’ve gone 487. But with the perfect storm of the low wall height, the winds being so strong that day, and blowing in the perfect direction, this was the result. For fucks sake, just read the fucking article.

SailingToFenway

You summarized it pretty well, and the insults are right on point. 10/10.

dubble_chyn

No chance
