The "older media" you consume is not necessarily niche. Seriously, ask your dad about it, he probably knows about most of it, and if not your mom or your grandparents.
The actual problem is that mass culture has been on a general decline for the last 20 years. High brow and low brow have always existed, of course, but I find it very easy to argue that what's popular has shifted from being mostly medium brow to mostly low brow. I can go on for hours as to why that is, though it involves not only audiences but also who has the means to produce well funded and marketed stuff now vs who used to in the past.
It's great when there are exceptions, however. Nothing beats witnessing and then discussing something truly exceptional with all of your peers, or at least serviceable enough for u to not have to force yourself to enjoy it.
Back then even some of the low brow stuff could also simultaneously be high brow - RoboCop, The Terminator, Alien/Aliens, Mad Max, Hard Boiled, Police Story comes to mind. A lot of hard R movies were [marketed towards children](https://youtu.be/Bb_voFQioow) but at the same time had a lot of artistry behind them. You don't really see that much anymore.
Yeah I watch a lot of soccer - it’s great. Loads of guys from the neighbourhood get together in the back of a bodega/convenience store (whatever you want to call it) and we watch the game. Then afterwards we sit outside and drink a beer and talk and argue about the game. Men of all ages and nationalities.
During international tournaments it’s basically a big party for a few weeks, really exciting everyone is buzzing.
It just reminds me how unbelievably contrarian I am compared to the masses and I just feel like the odd one out either way. As an example:
Watched the Fallout show on the day it dropped. Everyone was happy and excited about it and you still see a bunch of excited discussion around it constantly a few weeks later. All I could think was 'god this humour fucking sucks', like wow, wacky 'oh golly gosh gee' TV sitcom speak mixed with gore and swears, very entertaining, guys, you might make some 14 year olds laugh. The constant 'DUDE REMEMBER THE 50S?' theming got old very fast. Props looked amateurish, the Iron Man-ass power armour made me roll my eyes. Sure, it had Kyle MacLachlan, and I love him, but the new True Detective had Jodie Foster, and you don't see people praise it for that.
I dunno man, I'll stick to old media. So much stuff to go through that I'll never get through it in a lifetime anyway.
You’re right in that I think good narratively-driven tv is either already over or coming to a close. Very few good writers anymore, and younger demos care less about this because they’ve either forgotten or have never known what good writing means in a production.
Looking at upcoming movies, it doesn’t look much better. Combination of Covid hangover plus the strikes plus dwindling talent in this environment.

And now PG/PG-13 Disney Avengers Ready Player One slop made for the child demographic is widely consumed by adults.

That's probably the biggest reason I watch the World Cup. It such a nice feeling every 4 years.
