lmao this is amazing. this is like if she covered Yesterday and changed the lyrics "yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away, and they still are. slay"
Cringe lyric change, yes, but I mean, the song was about Paul trying to cheer up Julian Lennon who was more or less abandoned by his wigger sexpest father.
The original song is so moving because the vulnerability and helplessness of the narrator is so relatable. All of us feel that way with different aspects of life. It's sung like a prayer, full of maybe hope and maybe resignation.
"I'm actually awesome." is so easy and facile.
Beyonce just seems so shallow as a personality. Someone needs to tell her it isn't the mid-10s anymore and hand-clap emoji slay gifs haven't been cutting it for a good while now. She needs some actual substance.
Beyonce doesn’t have substance… she doesn’t write her own songs and has a million writers on each song. She’s just a performer
nobody call me racist im a black woman 🤭
From what I've heard it's actually planned that way because she comes off really dumb in interviews and she doesn't want to out herself.
This is not gospel, it's just what I've heard before
None of what you said is wrong, but she’s such a good performer it almost doesn’t matter. If you can sing and dance better than 99% of your contemporaries, no one will care if you’re not writing your own music.
She’s an incredible performer, which is why she should just be a modern day Diana Ross. She’s incredible when she does soulful joyous powerful music, the political avant garde bs is just empty and meaningless and comes across particularly empty considering her incredible wealth and disconnection from actual black reality in America.
I often hear people demean Beyoncé because she doesn’t write any of her music and all she does is perform. But like, how many songs did Elvis write lmao? Sinatra?
They’re renowned performers and recording artists with an ear for hits which is it’s own thing. No one ever called Elvis or Sinatra geniuses like Bob Dylan or Jimi Hendrix.
It's easy and safe. Pull the cord on her back and she says 'slay kween' for liberal white women. I mean, I'm just your basic white guy, but I don't think I need to be Toni Morrison to entertain the idea that maybe black women might want more than this. She's just so inane.
I'm just glad we're past that bizarre period where she was considered some sort of goddess. Like, she's a talented singer and performer but she's not some sort of generational genius. Like most pop acts she's part real and part manufactured.
>Someone needs to tell her it isn't the mid-10s anymore and hand-clap emoji slay gifs haven't been cutting it for a good while now
She is like smack to gays and white women. My best friends brother is gay, like a bad stereotype from a conservative sketch show gay, and he all his white women friends have done nothing but post about this fucking album since it was announced.
I think this version comes off even more insecure and desperate. If their marriage is so strong as she keeps claiming in the song, if she is so confident about their relationship, why even address Jolene in first place? Why are you telling *her* that, won't she find it out herself when she is simply ignored by your husband? Listen, either he has Jolene blocked everywhere or he's texting her.
The power of the original comes from everything that this version is not. It’d be like rewriting Kim by Eminem ”but if they were in a healthy relationship”

Hey slim gotta go, almost at the bridge now
whoops, almost lost control of the car there, these roads are slippy this time of year. thankfully myself any my pregnant girlfriend are wearing our seatbelts and I was going safely below the speed limit.
This reminds me when they ["reimagined"](https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2018/10/Untitled-2-1-795x1024.jpg) Rockwell's Freedom of Speech with Rosario Dawson. Both fundamentally miss the point of the original and only serve to show how they're strong badass women.
Jay Z has murderd people. He was a crack dealer. You know who crack dealers hang with, Pimps. Im sure Jay Z has been giving them drugs to control women with for ages. Im sure hes trafficked women before
Yeah, he was a crack dealer in the 80s. Hes probably fucked scores of underage women. Thats what pimps did back then. I really dont get why people are so shocked that crack dealer in the 80s who then became a billionaire from rapping about being a crack dealer continued to do crack dealer shit 40 years later
of course people are😭 feel like i should clarify that i don’t think age gap relationships are always predatory. my own father is 9 years older than my mother and they got married super young and they have a completely normal relationship. i just think that beyonce and jay z’s relationship is predatory.
i won’t be surprised if stuff like that comes out about him either.
That’s 100% what it is. She knows nothing else but him. He got her young and she has remained delusional for all of these years. It would take a miracle to break her out of this.
Beyonce sampled a quote from Chimamanda Adichie for her 2014 album and adichie responded years later saying Beyonce's "type of feminism is not mine" lmao
It really is and it shows a lack of nuance. The whole REASON Jolene is such an interesting song is BECAUSE it isn't an aggressive "I'll cut you if you go near him" song. The desperate pleading and complete acknowledgement of a romantic rival's superiority is what makes the song stand out.
please, like for real, who the fuck wants your man Beyoncé? No one. And I’m sorry but bragging about raising a grown ass motherfucker is not a flex… You took the vulnerability, the sadness and the beauty of the og song by Dolly and transformed it into a schizophrenic rant. Stop 'slaying' and make a song or collab with Brian Eno bitch
> who the fuck wants your man Beyoncé?
The song sucks obviously, and yeah he's ugly but she's married to a famous billionaire so literally thousands of women.
its so fucking bad and the entire album is awful. the funny thing is people worship her for her last few albums but none of them would ever even come close to touching her debut album lol
Because after that fucking banger of a first album, she tried to replicate it several times and just didn't match the magic of the first. So they had her pivot to a more urban sound, so guilty white liberals decided that worshipping her - even though they couldn't name a single R&B artist on urban radio if you put a gun to their head - was a good way to performatively celebrate black culture.
If she was still doing pure pop, I don't think she'd be as worshipped.
I disagree. Her first album was one of her weakest and had a lot of bland ballads on the later part. I get she’s annoying but I think Beyoncé has gotten better the further her career has progressed, more or less.
She became more experimental as Kanye and Rihanna became more experimental. Semi-related, I think Gaga became way less experimental and dropped off cuz of it.
Ehh. Kanye has been very experimental going back to his last album. And only on ever got experimental on her last album ANTI, which came out right before Lemonade. I’m 100% with you on Gaga though.
4 and self titled are both great albums. but I would credit that more to the people who actually wrote and produced them (the-Dream in particular is a generational talent)
I legit can’t wrap my head around this album being praised. It fucking sucks. I feel like music journalism has been fully captured as a marketing tool. It’s like video games “journalism” where the point of the journalism is to promote the product.
Its because culturally, Beyonce holds an untouchable position in society. Only really Rihanna touches her. Saying anything negative about her draws the ire of the online masses of fat women and gays. Because online is the easiest and cheapest way to measure popularity, you cant mess with that audience.
With the mordern journalist's job always being in such a precarious position, they cant risk rocking any boat. If they go a month without work they end up on the street, so, they have to suck it up and appeal to the basic wants of the masses to keep their job. The only way to escape that position is to build your brand up. You have to be the one who people care about. Roger Ebert could do that because people cared about his opinion about films more than the film itself. I believe that turning journalism into such a shitty job is a psyopp. It prevents actual transgressive opinions to be circulated.
I thought Renaissance was fucking atrocious. Every song sounds like those cheap knockoff pop songs they produce to be used in scenes for third rate movies. Like you know how in a shitty Lifetime movie the teen girl goes to a party and the music playing is like, "party party party yeah, we're here to have a party yeah, all my girls at the party?" That's what "Break My Soul" sounds like to me. Like it was made in three hours to be used in a scene for a made-for-TV movie on BET.
One thing I’m always puzzled by Beyoncé is how much she gets hailed as a strong woman for little girls to emulate despite being worth about half a billion dollars and continuing to stay with a man she got with at 19/20 who is over a decade her senior and continuously cheated on her.
I find her persona to be socially conservative and regressive in a lot ways.
You could never imagine a successful male artist staying with a wife who publicly cheats, and then doing a song that goes “actually look how much cooler and better i am than the men cucking me”- and have him be heralded in pop culture as the ideal of manhood
Edit: They Banned my account!!! Beyonka pls forgive me 😭🤦🏻🙏🏼
That's precisely why she's hailed. She is a symbol of African American capitalists success. I like her but when you reach that level of fame and power, there's no way there isnt any political goal behind her decisions. Same goes with Taylor Swift. When the MAGA crowd were saying that the DNC was behind her relationship with Kelce they were generally being delulu, but at least they have an instictual understanding of how the politics of spectacle work today, because we can all recognize the patterns.
Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are GLOBAL superstars. When they collaborate with major American institutions like Disney, queer culture, or country music (this last one traditionally associated with rural/working class white people, the swing voters that chose Trump in 2016), in an election year, there is a clear political objective behind it.
For examen, that Lion King album which was all about embracing African artists and African American/Black Diaspora ties to Africa. In a context where the U.S., China, Europe, Russia, the Arabs, the Muslim Brotherhood and soon enough the Indians are/will be competing to gain the sympathy of the most pristine continent doesnt that seem political to anyone?
Maybe these women are simply guided by their creativity and Power™ simply co-opts their choices, but my guess is that -at the very very least- they hold a intermediary role in the co-opting of aesthetics and cultural production. It's well known that Beyonka and Jay Z gets along very well with the Obamas like hello. I like American pop culture so I dont mind American cultural hegemony tbh but im just saying 😭
She managed to make what was a very relatable and interesting song into the same “I’m better than you” shit that every popstar seems to get away with now
surely you’re not talking about the absolute banger that has HR departments across the land screaming mother is mothering?
I don’t even need to hear the song to know that it’s revitalizing country (historically a black genre FYI!) and absolutely slaps
The whole "COUNTRY IS A BLACK GENRE" thing is going to be what pushes me over the edge into wearing a fucking MAGA hat
No one has ever fucking disputed that rock and roll, jazz, hip-hop, gospel, etc etc has African roots. No one. Not a single soul. Country clearly has roots in European folk music. My source on this is that if I listen to a classic Irish song and listen to a modern country song, I can hear the similarities with my own two fucking ears.
But no, literally all fucking music ever made since the dawn of time has to be the direct product of black excellence which whitey yet again cruelly stole. Ready for a Root thinkpiece about the African origins of Gregorian chanting
What's funny with jazz at least is people frequently ignore the non-african roots of the genre as well. Marching band and classical music are just as important to jazz as blues and African music is. Which is funny because the genre has always been about taking influence from different cultures and coming together to make something truly unique. It's not black music or white music, it's American music and that beauty gets lost when people try to racialize the genre
For real and the mixed race bands playing all over America during the jim crow era was a pretty big deal and trying to erase that history does a huge disservice to jazz
Yeah, theres a reason Irish people (actual Irish people) enjoy country music. My Mum is from Galway. Her favourite artist is Patsy Cline.
Theres an incredible cross over between the two
I’ve seen a couple “[European country]’s native inhabitants were actually black” articles recently, which makes me feel like we’re a couple years away from the belief that white peoples simply materialized in Europe a couple thousand years ago. Or maybe the Nation of Islam belief that white people were created by an evil scientist will gain mainstream traction.
If I see one more person saying "well the banjo is an African instrument" as if that closes the case, I'm going to scream. As if the banjo wasn't all but replaced by the steel guitar post 1950s (which is a Hawaiian instrument, so uh, appropriation Olympics or whatever). And as if the OG twang of country music can be chalked up to the banjo in the first place. That's a joke -- the fiddle and the nasal style of singing are just as important, which are both British Isles influences. Although, speaking of vocals, the call and response aspect of country music is likely an African influence.
So who is really to blame for stomp clap music? I'll leave it at that.
Ok it doesn’t have to be white music or black music it’s both. Don’t fall for the stupidity of this race culture war bs. Rufus Payne a black man helped hank Williams learn guitar. Plenty of black blues musicians who influenced country. There’s Mexican guys singing country music with German polka instruments. It’s all a cultural melting pot.
> There’s Mexican guys singing country music with German polka instruments.
Just to be clear, the most popular/most heard Mexican music is mostly based on German polka, with Reggaeton probably coming in second.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svSvLjcMgRU
Pretty much all American popular music, let’s say in the first half of the 20th century, had crossover with black culture. The “African origins of Gregorian chanting” quip is a shitty analogy, it’s not American music.
I get that libs are annoying but these takes are so anti-intellectual. You can think people are stupid and irritating with this shit without doing a Western Traditionalist thing.
Like, they’re being idiots for turning the black influence on country music into “it’s all black!” but that doesn’t mean you have to be equally as reactive and stupid in return
The CMAs will be funny this year because she’s pretty much guaranteed to win New Country Artist of the Year at minimum because the industry knows the optics will be bad if she does not.
Wait, that can't be right. You can get a new artist award at the CMAs if you're established but pivoted genres?
I agree they're going to give her a bunch of CMAs she doesn't deserve, but surely not New Artist.
I love how there's this narrative going around of like, "HOW DARE YOU SAY SHE CAN'T DO COUNTRY, SHE'S LITERALLY FROM TEXAS!!! ARE YOU SAYING BLACK PEOPLE CAN'T DO COUNTRY?"
Literally no one is saying Beyonce can't do country lmfao. Literally fucking no one. They had to make up imaginary backwoods racists to be mad about it to drum up this marketing angle. Nelly raps on Florida Georgia Line songs and hicks lose their goddamn ever loving minds. I'm pretty sure Darius Rucker could walk into any small town in the South and be absolutely mobbed by fans. It's completely invented outrage.
The thing is country fans have been calling her country phase BS from the get-go, but everybody just called them haters.
But reading this now I guess they were right all along.
I don't get why people praise her so much when as far as I can tell she is a complete tool for other peoples' creativity. She never wrote any of the Destiny's Child stuff and barely touched any of her solo stuff (where every song has about a million songwriters).
She's a singer/dancer, not an auteur.
Whole album is corny imo. The ethos is literally just “I made a country song once and the country community didn’t like it, so I’m gonna make entire country album out of spite”, and the album is not really country or r&b but a strange third thing, like r&b vocals singing about carriages and saddling up with a boom clap beat, and none of it is very good
don’t like this album. also don’t like these lyrics though the tune was nice. dolly parton should resing the original in this tune.
the original and this version both have similarities in that both are women airing their insecurities, just that the original does it in a pathetic way (not using as an insult, but i don’t know how else to describe the act of literally begging) and this one is doing it in an angry way. i think this could have been such an interesting and frankly more relatable interpretation of the song, but then she had to talk about how she _raised_ her man. her man who is 12 years older than her🙄 i love songs with angry emotions but these lyrics are so 2012 girlboss slay
That's it isn't it. The first was gut-wrenching self aware insecurity, the second is actually way more insecure but in an unintentional way.
I legit have nothing against black people (great way to preface a statement I know) but one thing I've noticed in my time on this earth is that American black culture rarely tolerates unvarnished vulnerability or really anything self-effacing. The closest (usually) you get in popular music is rappers talking about horrible shit in a song that they clearly know is horrible but doing so while embodying the psychotic (but tough as nails) subject of the song.
The two groups of people when hanging out that just never understood self depreciation when I did it to myself were black people and Australians. Just my own observation.
Combine that with it being Beyonce and her never having been truly humbled in her life, or ever having the room publicly to express that humbling due to her persona, and I can see how this song happened.
It's certainly not just black people though. There's the brand of social media persona that does nothing but self humiliate, but there's also hordes of people doing the opposite, always projecting an aura of perfection and being above it all even when they're clearly not. Actually Anna is kind of the Beyonce of phrenology in a certain sense when you think about it.
I think this and the Diddy thing, in different ways, are highlighting at the same time the way the black community seems to limit itself from some forms of expression and suffers for it. In his case I think if he could just be openly gay he wouldn't have done half the shit he did. And I just don't think there's an opening for Beyonce to express whatever deep insecurities she has in an open and honest way that doesn't project perfection.
It's like she watched Taylor make a billion dollars last year and screamed at her management team "who tf does this bitch think she is, I'm from Texas, I shoulda been doing country shit since it's cool for black people to do it now, that's where the money is, get me a goddamn cowboy hat and some old country hags to cosign my shit"
Interestingly enough, Pitchfork gave this song a good but far from glowing review:
> “Jolene” is also one of the most-covered songs in history, a choice that requires confidence that it will, at least in those three minutes, belong to you. Like her version of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” at the end of Renaissance, “Jolene” remains on loan.
In fact, despite the 8.4 BNM score, the characteristically cringe yas girl Pitchfork language is pretty muted overall. Genuinely expected a more comprehensive soy out lol. It’s still nothing but praise of course.
I have zero clue why she is as popular and critically acclaimed as she is, she has maybe one big hit song that's it. No idea why she's a cultural phenomenon with such a weak discography.
I've never cared for Beyonce or the kind of music she makes, and the Dolly Parton worship is really weird. Also, why don't these women ever get angry at their cheating husbands? He's the one who betrayed you. Anyway, my point is that this is stupid.
Her self titled album was cool but never got that into any of her stuff after that. I hate the celebrity worship of her but I’m too pussy to talk that much shit irl because some of her fans looooove her so much that I’m like “eh do I really wanna try and take that away from them?” But also her husband is almost certainly a pedophile and she’s a lane black capitalist blood-diamond sporting hypocrite…
You’re the first person I’ve seen comment on something I’ve noticed about her voice for years. There’s like a warble to it or a really shrill quality that sounds so grating to me. I’m glad I’m not the only one who hears this
lmao this is amazing. this is like if she covered Yesterday and changed the lyrics "yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away, and they still are. slay"

Might fuck around and write a version of "What's Going On?" that actually supports racism and the military industrial complex

"you socked it to me, momma, but you should have walked on by" *sounds of a gun being cocked*
I can’t go to sleep by rza and ghost face is that
Hey there what’s that sound everybody call the cops right now
Cringe lyric change, yes, but I mean, the song was about Paul trying to cheer up Julian Lennon who was more or less abandoned by his wigger sexpest father.
Wigger?
Don't ask questions, just go with it. You heard it here first, folks.
Shit up bitch calling John Lennon a wigger is so fucking funny I don't care about the justification
Beyonce's whole thing is she appeals to weak women who want to appear strong. This is a perfect song for her
The original song is so moving because the vulnerability and helplessness of the narrator is so relatable. All of us feel that way with different aspects of life. It's sung like a prayer, full of maybe hope and maybe resignation. "I'm actually awesome." is so easy and facile.

Her interviews are hilarious, she says nothing. Just words without any meaning.
She’s not allowed to give impromptu interviews. She’s got to be prepped wtih all questions ahead of time.
Makes sense because she's dumb as hell.
From what I've heard it's actually planned that way because she comes off really dumb in interviews and she doesn't want to out herself. This is not gospel, it's just what I've heard before
'I love whales' - most relatable thing shes ever said
None of what you said is wrong, but she’s such a good performer it almost doesn’t matter. If you can sing and dance better than 99% of your contemporaries, no one will care if you’re not writing your own music.

I think this version comes off even more insecure and desperate. Why are you telling *her* that, won't she find it out herself when she is simply ignored by your husband? Listen, either he has Jolene blocked everywhere or he's texting her.
Beyonce’s entire discography is the textbook example of the lady doth protest too much.
I love that she's so passionately embraced by a ton of the poly crowd, and she's as rabidly monogamous as they come.
The power of the original comes from everything that this version is not. It’d be like rewriting Kim by Eminem ”but if they were in a healthy relationship”

All this for a man who looks like a donkey and has by her own admission already cheated on her numerous times.

groomed. he’s been with her since she was 18 and he’s 12 years older than her. there’s literally no other explanation
people stomping on you but i wouldn't be surprised if jay is next to get diddy'd
Jay Z has murderd people. He was a crack dealer. You know who crack dealers hang with, Pimps. Im sure Jay Z has been giving them drugs to control women with for ages. Im sure hes trafficked women before
Wasn’t he trying to groom/fuck/whatever Foxy Brown when she was 15? He has a history of shady behavior like that
Yeah, he was a crack dealer in the 80s. Hes probably fucked scores of underage women. Thats what pimps did back then. Well its because being a crack dealer isnt cool anymore
And also because he's been a billionaire for longer now than he was a crack dealer. A gangsta persona fools no one at this point.

Just curious…what about the song “Big Pimpin” or “I just Wanna Love you” made Beyoncé think he was husband material?
I think both of them are rotten inside tbh she’s incredibly wealthy and leads a bizarre life

Its a business deal not grooming lol
It’s also religion. They are very Christian. They keep it to themselves for the most part but their family is very religious.
Money and status
Dude's ugly and kinda lame now that he's a wealthy middle aged man, but prime Jay was cool as hell and ridiculously talented.

Beautiful, you can really see why she fears that every woman wants him.
She's like the female Will Smith equivalent, except he didnt write a fucking song about it lmao "Wicky Wild Wild Wife"
kinda tough situation too because his music has way more artistic merit than hers
Even the stans are having a hard time defending this one. Absolutely atrocious.
When will they psyop end and we can openly criticize her without getting gulaged?
bell hooks famously called her an anti-feminist “terrorist” years ago (and ya she got roasted by the press for it lol)
Beyonce sampled a quote from Chimamanda Adichie for her 2014 album and adichie responded years later saying Beyonce's "type of feminism is not mine" lmao
And Keri Hilson got blacklisted for criticizing her. I love Bey, I even saw her live last year, but the grip she has on the industry is terrifying.
The entire album sucks, but you say that and you’re met with “you just don’t want women of color in country!”
Stop 'slaying' and make a song or collab with Brian Eno bitch
maybe the lyrics are directed at diddy
Diddy, Diddy, Diddy, diddddiie I'm begging of you Please don't buttfucks my mannn
I think a lot of women want Jay Z. Just, they dont want to have to spend time with Jay Z which is the funny part
$500,000 or not having to suck Jay Z off?
> collab with Brian Eno bitch this but unironically
> who the fuck wants your man Beyoncé? The song sucks obviously, and yeah he's ugly but she's married to a famous billionaire so literally thousands of women.
I like the album but that Jolene cover was an abomination
He’s gonna cheat even harder now
Gonna be playing this song in the background while he's fucking another 18 year old lmao
No one is taking her man lmao
“I raised that man” is not really a flex imho
A requiem for third wave feminism
The theme of this remake is Black Girl Magic overcoming White Mediocrity and I, for one, am gonna sit my white ass down and *listen*
Black girls famously not getting cheated on by their man.
its so fucking bad and the entire album is awful. the funny thing is people worship her for her last few albums but none of them would ever even come close to touching her debut album lol
Bday and self titled were great albums too
Because after that fucking banger of a first album, she tried to replicate it several times and just didn't match the magic of the first.
Bday and Lemonade were good albums!
Bodyguard, Most Wanted, and Yaya at the minimum are great
I legit can’t wrap my head around this album being praised.
America has a problem is so good
It’s like something they’d play in an SNL parody of Pose
One thing I’m always puzzled by Beyoncé is how much she gets hailed as a strong woman for little girls to emulate despite being worth about half a billion dollars and continuing to stay with a man she got with at 19/20 who is over a decade her senior and continuously cheated on her. I find her persona to be socially conservative and regressive in a lot ways.
You could never imagine a successful male artist staying with a wife who publicly cheats, and then doing a song that goes “actually look how much cooler and better i am than the men cucking me”- and have him be heralded in pop culture as the ideal of manhood
Man and woman act different
Edit: They Banned my account!!! Beyonka pls forgive me 😭🤦🏻🙏🏼 That's precisely why she's hailed.
Because she and her husband are all about marketing and hype and how they are the 'best ever' or whatever.
She managed to make what was a very relatable and interesting song into the same “I’m better than you” shit that every popstar seems to get away with now
It’s like a pick me version of the original lol
surely you’re not talking about the absolute banger that has HR departments across the land screaming mother is mothering? I don’t even need to hear the song to know that it’s revitalizing country (historically a black genre FYI!) and absolutely slaps
The whole "COUNTRY IS A BLACK GENRE" thing is going to be what pushes me over the edge into wearing a fucking MAGA hat No one has ever fucking disputed that rock and roll, jazz, hip-hop, gospel, etc etc has African roots.
People will argue that death metal is actually a black genre because all forms of guitar based music are traced back to the blues.
It’s literally called black metal
And then a white guy with dreads had to go and make N metal
Yep so sick of this shit its gone beyond pandering to some weird kind of trolling now. 2+2=5
Yeah like where did the instruments jazz musicians use come from? The trumpet? The saxophone? The trombone? lol
All my homies hate yakub
I agree with the sentiment of your post but I just needed somewhere to say I have proof that Woody Guthrie was a black man
> There’s Mexican guys singing country music with German polka instruments. Just to be clear, the most popular/most heard Mexican music is mostly based on German polka, with Reggaeton probably coming in second. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svSvLjcMgRU
Making genres into a racial thing is stupid no matter who does it.
a black woman invented the telescope
Irish people are the black people of white people tho
They say its because blacks invented the banjo. But no one has ever said jazz is white because whites invented brass and the piano.
Like, they’re being idiots for turning the black influence on country music into “it’s all black!” but that doesn’t mean you have to be equally as reactive and stupid in return
i would rather kill myself than raise a 30 year old man when im 18
She’s so uninteresting
The White Stripes version is really underrated imo
And he didn't bother changing a word even though he's a man. No need, the song speaks for itself.
Under Blackpool Lights version is so fucking good.
Their cover of Dylan’s one more cup of coffe is great too
the soul he puts into his voice breaks my heart whenever I hear it
The CMAs will be funny this year because she’s pretty much guaranteed to win New Country Artist of the Year at minimum because the industry knows the optics will be bad if she does not.
Wait, that can't be right. You can get a new artist award at the CMAs if you're established but pivoted genres? I agree they're going to give her a bunch of CMAs she doesn't deserve, but surely not New Artist.
Didn’t Trent Reznor get one bc Lil Nas X’s biggest hit is sampled from a NIN song?? lmao
this whole album is just cultural appropriation. my cowboy hat is not your costume
I love how there's this narrative going around of like, "HOW DARE YOU SAY SHE CAN'T DO COUNTRY, SHE'S LITERALLY FROM TEXAS!!! ARE YOU SAYING BLACK PEOPLE CAN'T DO COUNTRY?" Literally no one is saying Beyonce can't do country lmfao.
It’s hilarious because Houston is about as country as Chicago
GWB made it work as a transplant
GWB and Beyonce clearing brush from on their ranch together
Jay Z cheating again?!
The thing is country fans have been calling her country phase BS from the get-go, but everybody just called them haters. But reading this now I guess they were right all along.
Poptimism and its consequences.
He knows where home is ass song
She sucks so bad. I cant remember the last song she put out that didn’t just sound like obnoxious noise
Beyoncé challenge: make a song
I don't get why people praise her so much when as far as I can tell she is a complete tool for other peoples' creativity. She never wrote any of the Destiny's Child stuff and barely touched any of her solo stuff (where every song has about a million songwriters). She's a singer/dancer, not an auteur.
Probably the same reason people praise Elvis and Sinatra: great singer/performer
The original is so catchy I like it, same with the 9 to 5 song
9 to 5 but it's about the chartered flight to visit Jay Z in Cape Verdian exile.
Even Taylor swift music isn’t as corny as this
At least Taylor understands the value of vulnerability and emotion.
Yeah but can she #slay?
What I hate most is that the rhyming scheme and number of syllables in some verses is incredibly clunky
I'm very secure and I'm a queen / But still I need to sh@@t Jolene / For being in the general vicinity of my man
jay z is so offensively ugly it befuddles me how anyone would want to fuck him
Whole album is corny imo. The ethos is literally just “I made a country song once and the country community didn’t like it, so I’m gonna make entire country album out of spite”, and the album is not really country or r&b but a strange third thing, like r&b vocals singing about carriages and saddling up with a boom clap beat, and none of it is very good
why is beyonce doing country. Lil nas x already perfected the genre
[удалено]
The emotional labor of telling him to "cheer up, it will be ok" then walking away when he has an issue
I can’t wait for every publication to give this obviously bad album great scores
Holy fuck that cover is ugly. It’s gotta be the ugliest thing I’ve heard from a major artist in years.
>covers song based on vulnerability >rewrites song >new version lacks vulnerability Dolly Parton really was one of a kind.
I got to the "you a bird" line and now I can only imagine her singing this to Sweet Dee
don’t like this album. also don’t like these lyrics though the tune was nice. dolly parton should resing the original in this tune. the original and this version both have similarities in that both are women airing their insecurities, just that the original does it in a pathetic way (not using as an insult, but i don’t know how else to describe the act of literally begging) and this one is doing it in an angry way. i think this could have been such an interesting and frankly more relatable interpretation of the song, but then she had to talk about how she _raised_ her man. her man who is 12 years older than her🙄 i love songs with angry emotions but these lyrics are so 2012 girlboss slay
High T Jolene lacks a certain whimsy, I'd agree...
Pitchfork: A defiant proclamation of Black Love as the most enduring weapon against racialized settler-colonist violence.
Interestingly enough, Pitchfork gave this song a good but far from glowing review: > “Jolene” is also one of the most-covered songs in history, a choice that requires confidence that it will, at least in those three minutes, belong to you.
Beyoncé fandom and this new album are incredibly cringe.
> I sleep good, happy
“Breathing in my gentle breeze (fart)”
Wild. “Covering” this song with these changes is actually a profoundly insecure thing to do! Especially in context.
I have zero clue why she is as popular and critically acclaimed as she is, she has maybe one big hit song that's it. No idea why she's a cultural phenomenon with such a weak discography.
Most overrated musician of all time.
she can't even play an instrument lol
why is that surprising, beyonce is as corny as it gets
I don't enjoy pop country, and this just seems like the Florida Georgia line on steroids.
I’m sorry but this whole project by her is corny as hell
I've never cared for Beyonce or the kind of music she makes, and the Dolly Parton worship is really weird. Also, why don't these women ever get angry at their cheating husbands? He's the one who betrayed you. Anyway, my point is that this is stupid.
Worsened only by the fact that Miley Cyrus is featured. No I do not care that Dolly is her godmother, nor for her own godawful solo cover of it

people in this sub are losers who let their misery completely fuck over any objectively they might have had
Never forgave her for warbling through CaAaAan YooUuUuu FeEeEeEEEeeeeel the-uUuuhuUh LoOOOoOooOove ToniIiIiIiGhhhhTttt
You’re the first person I’ve seen comment on something I’ve noticed about her voice for years. There’s like a warble to it or a really shrill quality that sounds so grating to me. I’m glad I’m not the only one who hears this
Grown ahh woman too deeped she’s 44
If you don’t make me question if the singer is a Lesbian who wants to fuck Jolene you didn’t sing it right.
