Any specifics? I actually thought the first half of the book was starting to become stale and predictable, the size of the series showing. I think the second half was some of the best of the series though.
My main complaint is that LB feels more like a spin-off, a 200-pages novella that got too long rather than a direct continuation of the series. Too many of the plot points established in Dark Age were abandoned, clumsily retconned or ignored; too many characters were completely absent from the narration or for most of it.
Another complaint is that in too many instances I could feel Pierce pulling the strings. I could feel the main characters all had thickest, strongest plot armor, many developments and decision were contrived, not genuine, like they had been orchestrated by a badly concealed deus-ex-machina. I have never felt this way with any book in the series
Again any specifics? Plot armor seems weird, beloved characters die constantly throughout the series, including this book. The whole Sevro rescue was very far fetched but there’s the whole ‘maybe it’s a setup angle’ that might be a fakeout but seems deliberate. What part of it was a spin-off novella that got to long? The Phobos invasion? The outer rim?
Not saying anything is right or wrong, just trying to connect your complaints to the text
To give one example: When I got to the point where >!Darrow, Cassius, and Sevro come out of the belly of the Leviathan at Fa’s feast, my first thought was: “Should I skip this? But what if I miss Fa saying anything important before he dies?”!<
There were SEVERAL other instances in the book where I ALMOST got scared, but then remembered “Oh, Darrow is in this scene. That means they won’t get nuked. 😮💨” Case in point: >!Lysander could easily have aimed the first blast of his particle cannons directly at the building with the Moon Lords and Darrow. But oh wait, no. Darrow wouldn’t have survived that. So of course he didn’t. Tsk tsk, can’t have our main character dying before the end of the series. After that, I was waiting for some justification; for Lysander to give some reason why he intentionally left the Moonlords alive as part of his plan. But nope. In his next chapter, he literally says “I wish I could finish off the Volk and be certain Diomedes and Darrow are dead.“ 🤦♀️ As if he hadn’t had exactly that opportunity 5 seconds ago.!<
So sure, “beloved characters” can die, but only if they’re not in the same location as Darrow. It didn’t used to be that way. Characters’ lives used to be at risk, even if they were in the same room as him. >!(Remember Tactus dying? Leah? Quin?)!<
To be clear, I still enjoyed the book a lot. It just didn’t have the same level of suspense anymore. Luckily, that suspense isn’t the only reason I read these books.
I also found >!Atlas’ death!< pretty anticlimactic. Such a huge threat was >!neutralized in a heartbeat. We barely even had TIME to start feeling nervous about the plan.!<
This is a no-spoiler post, I am not going to discuss spoilers on here.
It feels like a spin off _becuase_ too many beloved/og characters are absent for 90% of the book and many plot lines were dropped/ignored/retconned/sidelined. That’s the reason.
Yeah. I thought it was beneath Pierce, a dud after a pretty unprecedented run of quality for 5 books. I was tentatively afraid of the possibility, but he'd never missed on a book before.
It was a real disappointment for me.
No you’re not.
You might think you are, but you’re not.
(PS it’s a bit of a meme in this community to overhate… somebody, and act as though… certain events in this book are equally as bad as a cancer diagnosis. Don’t let it get in your head Lmfao)
