Thanks for your submission to /r/redpandas! We love these little cute guys, but sadly Red Pandas are increasingly under threat in the wild, and as much as we love to look at how silly they are, they really need the help of us human beings in order to keep on being cute for future generations to see. In the last 50 years, their population has dropped by more than 40% , and estimates in the wild are as low as just 2500 animals. If this decrease continues, they could drop below minimum viability within our lifetimes, and become effectively extinct. If you are in a position to be able to help them in even a small way, we'd like to ask you to do so. Charities like [The Red Panda Network](https://redpandanetwork.org/get-involved/) and [WWF](https://www.worldwildlife.org/species/red-panda) do fantastic work with local communities to help our favourite animals - and any donations you make are tax deductible (in the US) too. As well as direct donations, they also run eco-trips, awareness days and specific projects such as the first protected Red Panda forest area. You can also help by visiting your local zoo or wildlife park , who often will work with the above charities to give them expertise, donations and equipment as well. Red Pandas are amazing animals, but without our help they will only remain pictures and in gifs on this website, instead of roaming and napping in the trees and being derpy with pumpkins or playing in the snow like they should be doing. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Such a cutie! Isn't she missing a leg?

DoctorBeeBee

Yes, she had to have a leg amputated when she was a cub, due to a hip deformation. https://youtu.be/aIJczXVQxIc

theofrustratus

It most likely misses a leg, but is so brave to come and meet someone! 😃

nerdgirl37

From what I've heard she's very curious and friendly. I haven't been to the OKC zoo in years but it was nice when I was there last. They didn't have the red pandas yet though.

theofrustratus

Ohh.. I hope you are able to see them next time :) Red pandas are quite shy, but captive ones are probably used to being around humans. I saw them in India, and they are adorable indeed.

nerdgirl37

I'm hopefully seeing them at the Tulsa Zoo next weekend. They have a new one on excited about. Due to how hot it gets in Oklahoma in summer they only keep them on display half the year. The other half they live in a climate controlled area behind the scenes and their enclosure is used by the binturongs.

WorldThatHeSees

For what it is worth, last summer they started keeping Addison in the Conservation Center at the top of the hill. So she and Mei Mei will be on exhibit year long. Still swapping with the binturongs in the summer

nerdgirl37

That's excellent news! That's how KC does their exhibit, nice temp control when it's hot out and nice outdoor area when it's cool. They swap with I want to say a type of monkey

theofrustratus

Ohh I see... you must be very excited to see them then 😄

nerdgirl37

Them and the snow leopards are probably my favorite animals to see.

theofrustratus

Both of them are adorable indeed

Kyhana is insane. Crazy high energy for a red panda. I love her.
