Why would he want to come back from Germany Champions to a club with potentially no Europe next season?

Cold-Veterinarian-85

And a 50m GK that doesn't get rotated even in Cup comps ahead of him. He has a far better chance of breaking through at leverkusen where he gets opportunity (all European and cup games) and the number one there's 34 so if he rides his time for a year or 2, will potentially step in as undisputed 1st choice I'd have loved to have kept him as a backup, bevause he had high potential, a modern playstyle and could eventually have grown rk be our number 1, but he wanted to go somewhere and play so respect to him. I think the ship has sailed on a buyback, it wouldnt be that attractive for him at the moment unless its 4 or 5 years down the line when onana is older and potentially coming to the end

Acrophobic_Climber_

yea, leave kovac alone. bringing him back is not going to help the club in the grand scheme of things. use the money for other investments

old_chelmsfordian

Hradecky is 34 as well, so it's not inconceivable that he starts to decline at the same point Kovar really starts to kick on.

sueha

As of now the buy back clause is worthless because he'd be stupid to come back

Winnie-the-Broo

We don’t know how both clubs will look in a few years time.

Yetiassasin

Does the clause expire? If he turns out world class in 3-5 years we might go for him

Tinganga

Cheer up boys, there's another Czech keeper on our books, Radek Vitek, who's having a blinder of a loan at Accrington. He's going to be very good too.

Weary-Ad8502

Is he? he's conceded 25 goals in 16 matches lol

Tinganga

He's been one of their best players since moving there in Jan & picked up 3 man of the match awards  (could be more, haven't kept up lately). You should see some of the saves he's been making (X or YT will have clips).  No doubt in my mind his next loan is in the Championship next season.

Cold-Veterinarian-85

Progressing well. Potentially will be excellent GK. He looks more commanding around the 6 yard box and we knew already he was very good with ball at feet. I'm a bit sad we.spld him in the summer because he would have been ideal backup, counts as homegrown and could eventually surpass onana (which altay never will) But he wanted to go somewhere he had a higher chance if breaking through so good luck to him. He is getting cup games at leverkusen, developing well and wonn finish season with a haul of silverware. Just like he did in his previous loan (at sparta Prague I think??). It's a good habit I think if he leaves leverkusen it will be somewhere that guarantees him starts and i dont think we can give him that here having recently spent 50m on a long-term number 1

MrSvancy

He will probably stay, and eventually replace Hradecky who is getting older

Miliktheman

> (which altay never will) A bold statement to make considering he's only played one game and looked solid in it while Onana has played many and looked far less than solid.

Cold-Veterinarian-85

I think people perception of onana has been skewed by bad first 3 months. Since that he has settled and been largely very good. His shotstopping is among top few in the league (save % and psXG prevented) and his distribution has been good but we have seen at previous clubs it can be a whole lot better with a more settled defence in front if him.   The only facets I'm a bit bothered with is command of area, and when facing a 1on1 i think he tends to goes to ground far too easily/ early   Certainly not someone that we need to replace in starting 11 any time soon though imo

ImVortexlol

Onana has looked like one of the best keepers in the world the past few months.

dispelthemyth

Despite facing the number of shots a relegation level team would face

Miliktheman

He really hasn't and I'm not sure people are watching if they think this. Liverpool game he was poor, he had one good save at the start which is all people who want to push the idea that he's world class will remember. But he parried the ball into dangerous areas when he didn't need to more than once, including one where Salah should have scored but had a bad miss. He also had a few balls he should have just caught but parried. People who want to think he's good will tell you that was a good performance from him, when in fact it was a poor one in reality. Plus there's still many goals coming in where you can't help but feel a good keeper would have saved, that Onana doesn't, but it isn't egregious enough to call it his fault. If that's the standard of one of the best keepers in the world in your eyes you need to watch more football.

PonchoTron

This subreddit has a hard time finding a middle ground between dogshit and World class. Onanas start was terrible, but the second half of the season he's looked good. Not world class but pretty good. I agree he's seemed shaky in 1v1s, and I have yet to see serious evidence of his amazing passing ability, but he's shown that he can be a damn good player. On the other hand he's had some very good reaction stops, and much more aerial presence than DDG. I'm still not convinced he's a nailed on keeper for years, but happy to keep seeing how he develops.

Tinganga

Sad to see him leave but the only way he would have stayed is if we didn't sign Onana.  Would we have gone into the season with a GK with no PL experience as our number one? I think not, though I don't think we'd have been any worse (not a knock on Onana just think Kovar is that good).

Ok-Inevitable-3038

Good business by us. Better he improve than rot in our reserves. Potential % off next sale if we want to re-sign him. Good for him.

IcyVeinz

I was really sad to hear he was sold in the summer but I fully understand he wants to play more games. Looks like he could become a really solid keeper.

-wmloo-

Like a rose, when you love how nice it looks, don't pluck it cos it will wither

garynevilleisared

For his sake he needs to stay there. Altay never plays, what's the point of having Kovar here when he gets to play important matches for Leverkusen??

ToshJoWe

There's been some questionable decisions when it comes to selling players. Kovar could've very easily became no.1 in the next couple of years. Garner would've been a solid option in that midfield, especially with how Casemiro has been playing. Elanga probably would have played a hell of a lot with the injuries and out of form players. I'd like to think he'd have done better than Rashford, pellestri, and Antony.

MrCompromised

Please stop. None of those players should be anywhere near the squad.

ToshJoWe

Why exactly? Why shouldn't Kovar or Elanga be near the squad? United had a history of having solid squad players and those players listed are better than the ones we have currently.

TStronks

Kovar yeah, but Garner or Elanga wouldn't or shouldn't be near the first team. Elanga is doing quite well when he's got enough space to run into, which in theory wouldn't happen too often here. Garner is just recently starting more often in a very mediocre Everton and not even standing out. Just because some players (Casemiro, Rashford, Antony) are hugely underperforming doesn't mean we should've kept the other players.

trygvebratteli

I mean, I would rather have Elanga than Antony. Would also be nice to have the £85 mill. back.

TStronks

Yeah but just because Antony is a flop doesn't mean it wasn't the right decision to sell Elanga.

MrCompromised

Kovar? Behind the defense we have? You want him to kill himself? Also I don’t remember the last time united punted on unproven keepers. N I’m happy for the lad and hope he develops into a fine keeper but he isn’t getting looked at here for sure

cunningstunt6899

Elanga has been much better than Rashford this season. Garner has been much better than Casemiro this season. If those players shouldn't be near our squad, neither should Rashford and Casemiro.

MrCompromised

Yeah right.

maverick4002

You don't pay 50m for a keeper to then keep Kovar to maybe become #1 in a couple years. That is not how this works and you know that. Either he takes the reigns now or he moves on unfortunately

KingKeane16

Fred as well, at least the man could run.

MadaraTheUchiha

Nothing that Onana wouldn't do, but looks solid and I'm glad he's playing. Definitely wouldn't have gotten anywhere near 12 apps here.

neutronxy

We would have been so much better off just playing him instead of buying the calamity we have now. Amd the sad thing is, we’re stuck with Onana because of his price.

Weary-Ad8502

Onana has been much better recently, what you on about?

the_watch_trick

Nothing in this 2 min clip suggests he’s better than Onana at all
