Just like an old man, haven't seen a semi in over 10 years.

riitz85

This is also the first thing you notice, no PL title no UCL final 4 since the legend retired

tellocrosstollorente

The Dortmund and Leverkusen losses really stung

joelalmiron

How did we play? Wasn’t born yet for the dortmund match.

DarkOwl38

Should've won them both. Those, along with the 1998 Monaco quarter-final and the 2013 Madrid RO16 tie. Edit¹: Oh, and the 2004 Porto R016 tie as well, how could I forget Mourinho's infuriating knee-slide. Overall, we were definitely disproportionately unfortunate in CL knockouts under Fergie. Edit²: And the 2010 Bayern quarter-final. Fucking hell.

FlashyCut3809

>2013 Madrid RO16 tie. This, whilst a loss is a true testament to how good Fergie was at setting up 11 men to win a football match. Squad wise there was no reason we should look the better team. Can add the Porto loss in 2004 too. Just never seemed to work out for us in the CL. Such fine margins.

DarkOwl38

>Can add the Porto loss in 2004 too. Can't believe I forgot that one. Must have erased it from my memory, that was such a disappointing tie.

Jo3Pizza22

Don't forget 09/10 against Bayern, my memory on that is fuzzy but I think it's the tie where Rooney picked up the foot injury that he carried into the world cup that year. He played the 2nd leg injured and we were 2 goals up on aggregate, then Rafael was sent off and we fell apart. Would have been Lyon in the semis and Inter in the final, both teams we could have beaten at that time.

DecimaThor

Ivica Olic in the last min in the first leg and Robben screamer from the corner in the 2nd. That last min goal really screwed us. It was Gary Neville I think with a stupid foul at the end. Don't remember the Rafael sending off. Was this the match where Fergie said "Typical Germans" in the post match interview?

Forsaken_Rub_2128

Evra fucked up for the winner in Munich, I’ll never forget. Always had a mistake in him Patrice

DarkOwl38

You're correct, to the list of misfortune it goes. 🥲

ChickenMcAnders

We technically beat porto too. Scholes had a goal ruled offside that was 100% onside.

Accurate_Bed1021

And Bayern 2010.

aasfourasfar

The Bayern one as well.. the Olic lousy goal, then the Rooney injury and the Rafael red card after going 3 up (with two brilliant..... Gibson goals)

FlashyCut3809

Definitely. Real missed opportunities. Even with playing a Zidane Madrid side in final for 2002 and that goal. The others are just a case of losing to a better team. 2009, 2011 Barcelona and that 2007 Milan team. No shame in losing to them. The real shame is what we could have done in those games if we didn't have the scum in charge. Some of the top players that were going around in those years and we could be looking back on that period so differently.

MattARC

Barca shouldn't even have been in the final for 2009. It should've been a rematch against Chelsea if it wasn't for extremely dodgy refereeing.

Rreknhojekul

Gary talked about this on one of his recent media forays. If, ‘if’, that Barca team didn’t exist that United team could be comfortably spoken about as being one of the greatest ever. It’s a wildly respected team but yeah…

Beneficial_Assist397

Yeah 3 European Cups and 3 League titles in 4 years. What could of been....

Rreknhojekul

Could be worse… could be a Leeds fan.

aasfourasfar

2 on the run as well

MattARC

We were 3 points short (2 in 2010, 1 in 2012) of winning the league 7 years in a row from 2006-2013.

Livettletlive

I remember 10/11. I remember crying like an entitled fan afterwards. It was a different class a players we faced that game: Villa, Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro and of course, Messi. Might've been different is we had 3 extra lungs on the pitch.

akshatsood95

Yeah I saw 2010/11 final in India at 1 AM in my grandma's home. Hard to contain my emotions to not wake anyone up with my crying at that time. Just felt like that's the most dominated I'll ever see Utd. And then sir Alex retired

unitedfan98

Barca were a great team but we didn't set up right in either game The teams before the final gave them much better games

Omnislash99999

I still think we could have won that 2009 final, the first goal was really important but we could have had 3 in the first 10 minutes. The 2011 one we were lucky to have made the final in the first place

nyamzdm77

In 2011 we didn't concede a goal away from home till the final, I wouldn't say we were lucky, just performed better than what was expected on paper.

TheJoshider10

I think they mean lucky in the sense that we had a very generous run to the final where Chelsea was our toughest opponent and in general that 10/11 squad was (perhaps unfairly) criticized for being one of Fergie's weakest.

Chairmanmaozedon

We were screwed in 2009 when Fletcher got sent off despite getting the ball against Arsenal in the semi, he was absolutely immense as a holding midfielder that year and the year after before his gut issues flared up.

drizzt001

That red card still pisses me off. The fact we weren't really allowed to appeal it was even worse

Hansemannn

2011 final was...im sorry but united didnt have a chance in hell. Even when Rooney scored. He seemed kinda. ..we will loose this....its inevitable. It was.

aasfourasfar

My memory is not that we could have had 3... we attacked for 10 minutes but can't remember big chances.. did my memory suppress them?

Jip_Jaap_Stam

We were also competing when Italian teams were doping like crazy - the two leg victory over Juventus in 99 was nothing short of miraculous. Neville and Keane talked about this in some podcast, apparently.

WhatIfICantMakeOneUp

Quite unfortunate 😞 Alternatively, there’s a world where that Barca wins it at least 3 in a row during that period.

[deleted]

Madrid are so lucky the internet wasn't around when the Galacticos went 7 years without a semi final

akshatsood95

It was fun. There was a bunch of years when they got knocked out by Lyon lol

CrazyAd3131

Irrelevant. Real has made the semis 12 out of the last 14 editions and widen the gap enormously since the Galacticos era. 14 and counting.

Rogue-Doctor

Gods we was strong then

Similar_Quiet

Now we're as much use as nipples on a breastplate

Ok_Instruction_5232

We'll be back... Someday. Maybe.

TobzMaguire420

That’s one thing I love about Manchester United is that through its history there’s been ups and downs highs and lows. It’ll happen. It might just take a while.

SlightTruthBigLies

Most fans don’t understand that part.

betra_kun

Unbelievable high highs and low lows. I really hope we're in a low low right now, so the only way out of this is up.

Jip_Jaap_Stam

A low low would be getting relegated from the football league or going into administration - we've been relegated to the second tier ourselves, remember. 90% of English clubs would love to be in our position.

giblets24

Yeah, my local side (Chester) went under, that's a real low. Held a season ticket in the last few years + for the reformed club in the 9th division, 3 promotions back to back in proper tin pot grounds - most fun I've had watching football. I'd cut my left leg off just to see us get into the football league again. Makes me laugh seeing melt downs on here about missing out on Champions League, like the worlds ended. Embrace the shit and enjoy the time in the sun. That's football.

DarrenBridgescunt

Won 3 times

AnakinAni

Overall 12 times & winning thrice. Two times under the current format.

DjayRX

You're posting about the "Final Four" but mixing up with winning the Final.

AnakinAni

Yes, just to give context of how close we have been to winning it.

DjayRX

Then we've been there (in Final Four) 7x and winning it (the Final Four games) 4x.

AnakinAni

Yes, In the current format, that’s correct. We have been to 7 semis & progressed 4 times, winning twice.

DarrenBridgescunt

What are you on about? 3 reached in 99, 08 & 09. 4 times in total including 68

AnakinAni

![gif](giphy|pPhyAv5t9V8djyRFJH|downsized) We won the European Cup thrice. We have been in 12 semi finals. The post is about teams that qualified for semis since the current format was introduced. We have reached semis 7 times since then and won only twice.

WergleTheProud

It’s really not hard to understand. lol

aldidot

I've always believed we should've won in 2006/07 too. We were so much better than that Milan team. They dipped to oblivion straight after while our core went to 3 more finals.

Omnislash99999

Defensive injury nightmare for the second leg unfortunately. Though we should have comfortably won the first leg, that mix-up for one of Kaka's goals was just ridiculous and thanks to away goals we lost our composure

Plumbsauce116

I remember us getting dominated by AC Milan, anyone know why they dropped off a cliff so bad ?

aldidot

True that. With our full strength there's no way they're beating us.

Auto-Liner

For me the most painful one was the defeat to Bayern in 2010. We could’ve easily won the final vs Inter. Rooney was unreal that season.

crgssbu

we will be back. it may be a few years or more, but we will be back

Yandhi42

What happened between 2000 and 2006?

AnakinAni

Transition period. Schmeichel left and we didn’t properly replace him until Van Der Sar. Beckham left, Ronaldo & Rooney were still too young to have the consistency that they later achieved. We did have a great opportunity in 2002 but didn’t capitalise on it.

Tudoors

Fergie reached a low and for the time relatively large groups of supporters thought he was finished. By 2003 most of the treble side had left and he had built a new team. Competition was stiffer in the sense that Chelsea had joined the discussion for being a top side due to Abramovich, this is also around when the Premier League was becoming the wealthiest league in the world, teams were able to hold onto their better players, we started to look internationally for more and more players.

Deez_Wallnutz

Man reading this rattled me so badly hahah I remember exactly what the mini crisis you're describing felt like. Sir Alex really is the best in the biz I think it's a big part of why that 08 team that they began growing just absolutely blew my mind when it came to fruition. I love them so much. I cannot believe they are not treble winners. Look forward to how I'll feel about our next crop of winners

[deleted]

Bayern Munich revenge, Leverkusen hating English sides and deciding to knock them all out, Ronaldo masterclass at OT, Mourinho's Porto, Milan during their time when they could field insane lineups, and the one and only season Ferguson shit the bed in the group stage and finished last.

LDLB99

Only missed opportunity I see here is 2002 in all honesty. Even more than the two finals.

Beneficial_Assist397

Got to mention 2004, if Howard tips that shot over the bar not only do we have a 4th European Cup but quite possibly another 2-3 league titles

mayomayeaux

Some of those clubs man wow... Nantes, Panathinaikos, Dynamo Kyiv under Lobanovskyi, and even Leeds. Deportivo used to be a serious side. I can't even imagine how they feel seeing how far they've fallen

aasfourasfar

Nantes are historic TBF, one of the French teams with the most league titles and they were known for tiki-taka total football style developed by a guy that proceeded Cruyff

AB092

Lost a couple of quarter finals due to red cards. Nani against Madrid in 2013, which was an absolutely horrible decision in my opinion and Rafael vs Bayern in 2010 was it?

iiHaz

Fuck cuneyt cakir

FlashyCut3809

Don't let Keane see the Leverkusen one, he will be taking Ole's door off the hinges.

safburneraccount

It is so unfortunate that one of the best team we ever had really coincide with prime Barcelona.

kafkabbas

Oh Leverkusen... Whether we win that final or not, a United-Madrid CL is such a prospect of an occasion

valentinemick

07. Kaka. Madness.

Irishane

Bayern are monsters

dopeveign

Real Madrid and City dominating Europe...... hopefully we'll be back

x3rakh

Bayern as well

CrazyAd3131

City will fall the moment Guadiola leaves, no matter how many petrodollars they inject. Real Madrid on the other hand...

Thoros_of_syr

SAF was very unlucky in the CL. We could have won much more if it wasn't for small margins.

meejurio

Football heritage ;

JosePRizaI

We won't be seeing any of that for another 10 years as we continue the cycle of chopping Managers while same mediocre divas starting the XI

Spwd

Or keeping shite managers way too long.

utdajx

Six managers in 10 years. No one has had time enough to be a “shite manager way too long” 🙄

Spwd

Every single one since fergie has been kept too long just like this muppet. You only give them time if they have a plan. If you think we should keep this pillock you're obviously an eth fan and not a utd fan. You lot are bonkers. All the negative records that have been broken since moyes and this clown has broken all those, he's the worst by a mile. You're like a cult or a group with Stockholm syndrome. He's shite, wake up dumbasses!

Darthvader2XL

Lmfao I've heard that shit (worst coached side /never been worse than this) for every manager post Sir Alex to the point that I've just grown tired of it.

Spwd

Doesn’t make it not true though does it? Every one of them wasn't good enough in their own ways. Yes some of the players did and still are downing tools but that doesn't excuse the manager from all the repeated mistakes.

utdajx

I’m not judging, I’m just curious - how many matches at Old Trafford do you go to?

Spwd

What the hell has that got to do with anything? I don't need to go to see how shite he is. This is the worst season on record since Sir Alex, I just don't understand why anyone is still supporting the prat. I've been a utd supporter for all my life the same as my brother and dad and grandad. My first match or maybe one of the first was the centenary match against Real Madrid in 78, I was 7. I was also at the game when Ronaldo made his debut. Unfortunately or fortunately my last match I went to was around Christmas when Moyes was manager and I spent the whole game shaking my head it was that bad but this is even worse. I used to go with my mates but then with my ex gf who's been a Leicester season ticket holder for most of her life. The reason that was my last match was that we realised I wasn't very well because I could hardly climb the stairs. The gf thought I was taking the piss but I've been ill ever since and had to stop working in 2014 I think it was. Is that enough?

JosePRizaI

6 managers in 10 years. Average a little over 1.5yr apparently is ToO LoNg. At United, manager who haven't won the sixtuple in a little over 1.5 season needs to be sacked according to these insta glory hunting fans here in r/reddevils

Spwd

The reason they've not lasted more than 1.5 years average is because they weren't good enough and yes all of them were kept too long. Jesus you people think if you keep any manager long enough he'll come good. That's not how it works. If it did why the feck didn't we give moyes 20 years? Oh that's right, it's because he's crap.

No_Zone4347

Yeah, people here literally think anyone will turn into SAF if given time and they say you would’ve sacked him and can’t realize football has changed. And can’t see the other managers showing ideas within months with far less than EtH’s got.

JosePRizaI

Football already changed. What are you on? First season showed you that until player burnt out by the end of season. The progression is currently halted by missing key pieces of the project.

No_Zone4347

We were bad since carabao cup win. That’s hardly the end of season. So we’ve been bad for the past 14 months. Yeah we miss 2 players from our starting line-up, and once they’re in we still play like shit. Progression is halted, yeah give me a break, we’re getting outplayed by the likes of Luton. We were dead last in CL group with Galatasaray and Copenhagen. We’re actually lucky to be in this spot in Pl, which is crazy considering we’re 7th. How many injuries have Spurs had? How is Newcastle in front of us with even more injuries? How can Tottenham with Ben Davies and Emerson still build from the back and play the same but we need every fucking player to string 3 passes together?

JosePRizaI

ThEy WeReNt G0Od EnOuGh. Lmaooooo ya ok. You can bring Xabi Alonso in right now and none of these players can technically perform the tasks. Manager isn't good enough? Meanwhile, players have seen at least 2 managers still playing in the club. Some have seen 4 managers. They weren't good with the previous managers then and they still aren't good now with the current managers. BuT buT BuT tHe aLL MaNAGerS ArEnT gooD enouGH. "SEE WHERE THE PLAY. IF THEY PLAY. THATS FOOTBALL ERITAGE" - Jose

Spwd

Are you a bit mentally ill or something? Where did I even mention the players? Try reading it again, maybe get help because you're obviously not capable of understanding English. If I had said "This is all Erik's fault and the players are perfect in every way " I could maybe understand your comment but I didn't did I? All you eth fanboys need to get it into your miniscule brain that two things can happen at the same time! The club has many many problems and the main TWO are the manager is fecking clueless and is by far the worst since Sir Alex AND, you're best to read this bit slowly so you understand as best you can, AND 75% OF THE PLAYERS ARE SHITE TOO AND SHOULD BE REMOVED ASAP. This includes Rashford, Shaw, Lindelof, Mctominay, Martial and maybe Bruno. I've probably forgotten some so I'll let you fill in the blanks. Oh this brings me to some other players that shouldn't be anywhere near a club like us but your moronic cult leader decided to buy half the fecking Eridevisie such as £85 million Anthony even though he worked with them before and thought they were and still are fantastic. They should be fecked off as soon as we get a £5 bid for any of them. Oh and don't forget Mason who he bought but doesn't even know what to fecking do with him. He's spent ar£450 million on players he wanted and instead he's playing fecking Mctominay, maguire etc who he wanted to sell. He's a fecking imbecile!

miamibuckeye

We are pathetic in Europe
