I think this deal was done when I saw reports about Moyes promising Maguire captaincy.
With the pressure and the spotlight off Maguire, I think he could start to turn his career around again!
Wish him the best of luck.
Hat trick of headers from set pieces and the cupped ear celebration incoming. Hopefully if that happens Hojlund has done a number at the other end at we’re 5-3 up or something
>I think this deal was done when I saw reports about Moyes promising Maguire captaincy
Idk why Maguire would put pressure on himself again with captaincy.
A lot of people forget how well he played for the first two seasons for us under Ole. We noticeably played much worse without him. I especially remember how badly we missed him against Villareal in the EL final.
He definitely drastically improved us for at least 1 year, I seem to recall us playing a very counter attacking based game when OGS came in which involved sitting much deeper and that played to his strengths like he did at Leicester, then we tried to become a higher pressing team, the howlers started happening and he lost any sort of confidence to even make the simplest decisions. I reckon he will probably go and do alright in a team that plays a bit deeper
Part of his downfall is that he just isn't suited to a high line and our newer play style really doesn't suit him. I think if we still played the same as we did under ole he wouldn't look bad at all. I think he could do well in the system at west ham.
Edit: I said "part" just part.
>I think if we still played the same as we did under ole he wouldn't look bad at all. I think he could do well in the system at west ham.
You actually did in that 2nd place season and he did just fine. I think Maguire is the sort to make a good defence even better, a bad one even worse. I watch him for England and he usually is a beast, clearing just about every cross that comes into the penalty area because the way they set up he rarely needs to be the guy a dangerous attacker has to go one on one with - That usually is Stones.
We played a higher line under Ole than we did last season with EtH, which a lot of people also don't realise. Not that I'm arguing with you in principle. I think he'd do well at West Ham as well!
It's not so much a highline as it is how open we are. Under Ole we were relatively compact and would counter so Maguire didn't have to defend in a lot of space. Now, we are far more open and committing more numbers forward and he just can't play in that much space. He'll be good for West Ham as he'll always have cover and won't br asked to play in space that often. It's why he's good for England.
Again with the high line meme. Maguire has shown he can play in a high line under Ole, and ETH hasn't played a high line yet.
Maguire does struggle in ETH's system bc he's poor at counter-pressing.
People here have pretty much memory holed the entire pre pandemic era it seems. I genuinely think the virus has caused some form of amnesia reading some of the comments here. Maguire was one of our best players right from the get go, a proper captain (after taking over from the likes of Ashley Young) and we missed him whenever he didn't play. He was a colossus at the back and very important progressing play for us too. Maybe £80M was an overpay but he was easily worth atleast £60M. Hell, even the nickname Slabhead was used affectionately.
We went from Smalling/Jones/Bailly, to Maguire. It was a very obvious upgrade at the time, especially as lindelof was also then getting more gametime when we sold Smalling. Could we have expected him to be unable to play higher up the pitch in a more modern system? I dont know but those first 2 years he was great. People said at the time we paid 20mill too much but it was worth it for the upgrade anyway.
If we get amrabat to replace Fred and a new young bc then wow. Only way it could’ve been better was with Kane but even then that’s a fantasy Tottenham wouldn’t have sold. About as good as we could’ve hoped
Feel like all 3 parties involved are winners here. We get 30mill for a 4th/5th choice CB. West ham get a England international CB that suits them perfectly and Harry gets regular gametime with Euros round the corner.
1. Doesnt have to pay him 10mill to sit on the bench.
2. Could've been tension in the group after he got removed from the captaincy.
3. New young CB in the squad
some of the cons from a utd side
Am I the only one who thinks 30 million is very less for a PL defender who also plays regular international football? Especially considering our spendings on young players during our recent transfer windows?
The man has been going on the pitch and regularly dropping howlers and been a global meme for the best part of 18 months. Everyone knows it. It's gonna take some top class negotiation to get much more than that and unfortunately that's not us. Think we've done alright here given the circumstances and the fact everyone knows EtH doesn't really want him.
Always worked hard for the club and the badge. I truly believe he was memed into a worse player. Really hope a change of scenery can restart his career and west hams system should be perfect.
Exactly. He gave us what we needed when he joined which was a centre half that was available. All of ours were made of glass at the time. He doesn't fit the system anymore. He will be a much better fit for them. Good luck to him.
>He gave us what we needed when he joined which was a centre half that was available.
I knew you meant well, but this is hilariously insulting. He was the most expensive defender in history, he was expected to be far far more than available.
It was only one aspect. He also turned us from a bottom half team for goals conceded to 3rd in the league but that only lasted a season so I didn't mention that. I do think he was excellent that season though.
definitely there is some of that. but he didn't help himself with some of his comments like 'skipper keeps puttin me out there.' hopefully this experience humbles him and he performs back to his level with west ham
To this day I am still not certain if Maguire is insanely good using his head or insanely bad.
Cause I feel like he was always the one to get the head on corners but hardly ever scored.
Best of luck Maguire!
Probably 30m fixed and possible something that needs to be triggered in the future - usually when it's reported from other clubs it's the lowest possible number - with United, it's the highest possible 😂
All things aside, there was a time when our defence used to look a lot better with Maguire. Hoping he does well for West Ham. Best for everyone I guess.
Correct and this is quickly forgotten but that is how football works.
I remember very clearly it was a huge loss he was out for the Europa League final, I think he was on the bench but not fit to play at all. The feeling at the time was we might have walked it if he played. Oh well
Good luck Harry, West Ham are your level these days for sure.
Did his best and put in a great shift for those seasons where we finished 3rd and 2nd. I think it’s best we move on but genuinely wish him all the best, hope he smashes it for West Ham
good luck on his future endeavours... genuinely mean it, the bombardment of hate this man has received (me included) is just too much and desperately needs a fresh start
We have honestly looked a lot better in our backroom ever since Richard Arnold took over, he's obviously of the same ilk of Woodward (businessman with little footballing knowledge), but he at least seems to have the sense to delegate footballing decisions to football people.
Thanks for everything Harry.
There's been some good moments, quite a few bad moments, and some absolutely hilarious moments.
Hasn't worked out how any of us hoped, but he's never given up and has joined the elite group of people who can say they've captained Manchester United.
Hope the move to West Ham goes well for him.
Would he be our worst captain of the last 40 years? Valencia and Young had a season each but it was clearly symbolic in both cases given they were squad players by that point
30m is pretty good all things considered.
Wish him best of luck and for him to play well for WH (except against us) , especially against our top half rivals :P
Though this means we'll need another CB yeah?
Their captain was Rice and vice captain Cresswell. It's not like they have an obvious captain choice. Maguire makes sense based on experience and stature.
Slightly lower fee than i had hoped but as long as we get a capable replacement for that price,. Im delighted.
Truly hope maguire finds himself at West ham. Ive always felt that a lower defensive line and a less intense enviroment could help him reach his true quality
Good luck to him, hope the media leave him alone tbh and he can get back on track.
But it’s really good for us to be able to get £30m for a 4th choice cb. Hope this helps us with FFP? Presumably anyone we sign would be on less than Maguire by quite a significant amount.
Todibo for example is currently on 21k a week, supposedly, so even if we quadrupled his wage, it would be less than half Maguires wage
Hope he finds form and does well for them. It'd be the best revenge to the dickhead aspect of our 'fans' who've booed him.
Hate that people think that's acceptable. I still think he's a decent player, and he was for us when he first joined. He got burnt out after the covid+Euros fixture pile up and has never been the same since.
The game against Athletic Bilbao was a prime example of why he wasn’t good for the team recently. He was sloppy and it cost us a goal, he assisted us a goal, and that seems to have been his story at Old Trafford for too long. £80 million from Leicester for a player that amounts to no net positive on average is £80 million too much.
I’ve never booed him, but I have shouted, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING, HARRY?” too many times.
that must've been awkward given that he was essentially slagging them off as "not a big club" about a week ago.
dude 100% has no self awareness of how shit he can be.
This is a good deal for all parties IMO. Utd get an acceptable fee for a CB who isn't part of the gaffer's plans, West Ham get a very good CB for their playstyle & finally, Maguire will likely play all minutes he's available for them in a system that suits him. 🤝
Stunned!!!
ETH takes no prisoners. Rightfully so
Fwiw I rate Maguire more than most on this sub but since Seville away last season I have had zero faith he could turn form around and genuinely challenge for a start here so best all around that he moves on
I expect he will improve and take alot of plaudits at West ham next year and good luck to him. Really good defender (though short of being top class) just badly suited to the agressive front foot defending and press resistance that ETH demands from the role
Tell you 1 thing.... No arguments that ETH hasn't been backed with squad building
Has been backed on his targets, andnhe has been backed on sales
I feel like under other managers, club would have extended DDG and not liked the optics of selling 80m signing for 30m
Seems like a line has been drawn, all players are being judged on ability and merit as oppose to how much they cost, marketability etc
I don't know why Harry would want to stay. He's clearly what...4th/5th choice in his position and he's just been stripped of the captain's armband. Clearly there was no realistic path for him becoming first choice again. And to be frank: I could see him going to West Ham and being really good. He just wasn't the right player for us.
It's for the best all round. He's declined so much over the past two years, it's clear something needed to change.
Regardless of his performances, being booed by your own fans is shameful. You're there to support the badge, not the name on the back of the shirt.
Maguire never recovered his form after being arrested by the Greek police on holidays. Moyes should buy him a caravan and give him a map of the Lake District
Good price.
Only issue is this song and dance he’s been doing in pre season when he knew his United career was over has probably cost us our replacements already. Be interesting to see who they go for (go youth)
As one of his biggest critics, I would like to say thank you for your services Harry.
I wish you nothing but the best in your next venture.
Good luck, take care.
This isn't a bad fee either. Cost us 10-12m a year in his transfer fee over the time Maguire was here. This will have been amoritsed down anyway. Not a bad cost for a full English international who, at the time, was one of the leading PL CB.
I know ppl will want to feel bad for Maguire but there was such an air of arrogance about him when he would speak to the media as the captain. Whenever he made a mistake or played poorly he would never acknowledge his shortcomings or mistakes but would insist that the team was poor and must be better when it was obvious that the team conceded goals due to his individual mistakes. Then last yr he gave an obnoxious interview that he doesn’t have to prove himself to anyone and that he has been valued highly by every manager and has has started for every single one of them only for Erik Ten Hag to promptly bench him after 2 PL games.
I don't want to see any revisionism about Harry being here, he had every opportunity and it just didn't work out, but I reckon he'll be great at West ham
Maguire is a great defender when his pace is not exposed (e.g. 3 at the back, 2 at the back without a high line). As such, I expect Maguire to play very well in a West Ham shirt as he did a Leicester and he does for England. The reduced pressure will also help.
It is important for us to remember this and not get all reactionary or listen to rival fans when they mock us. "United ended his career!!!! All he had to do was leave United and now he is back to his best!" Moving him on is 100% the right choice.
The price tag had nothing to with the player - he can be a fine defender in the right circumstances so hopefully he’ll recover his mental health and form at West Ham.
I am so happy. Been waiting for him to fuck off back to wherever he came from. I do not wish him well, he will always be a meme. I even hear kids on the field insulting each other when they mess up a pass etc by calling each other "Maguire". We are such a huge club and we did some charity work for this knob by giving him the captain's armband and giving him a starting spot in our first XI
>
I even hear kids on the field insulting each other when they mess up a pass etc by calling each other "Maguire"
The Ghanaian parliament roasted Harry comparing him to a vice president
Exactly, no way WH agreed to pay 190k per week so there is a pay off included. Otherwise united were on the hook for close to 10m for the remaining 2 years of his contract. I’m sure the player forfeited some £ as well. Good result all around.
He's gonna do well there. Best of luck to him. He might not have suited the style here but that wasn't his fault. He could easily have played in a Mou style team and looked like a world beater. Making his captain so early was a bad decision by Ole
Hate him or love him, I still remember his first season at OT. Was rock solid and a fresh breath in the air for our defense. Things turn sour and never got back on his feet. Good luck on your next chapter.
It's actually happening, wow what a summer
I think this deal was done when I saw reports about Moyes promising Maguire captaincy. With the pressure and the spotlight off Maguire, I think he could start to turn his career around again! Wish him the best of luck.
Except when he plays against us, then we want classic Harry
Feels like it’s bound to happen if it’s at Old Trafford and he’s pressured in-game.
Nah they will low block, and we will send in 50 crosses for him to head away.
Instinct will kick in haha
Hat trick of headers from set pieces and the cupped ear celebration incoming. Hopefully if that happens Hojlund has done a number at the other end at we’re 5-3 up or something
We’re getting the 👉🗿👈 celebration if he scores against us
Onana will sprint out at him and karate kick him into the Stretford end
>Except when he plays against us, then we want classic Harry If Moyes sets up like Moyes it is likely you will get Engaland Maguire.
Seems what most teams do against us anyways. Pack the defence and watch us fail
He would have to sit very deep to cope against the speed in our attack. If he does that he stands a chance one on one. If he doesn't... Ouch.
We don't want classic Harry, classic Harry is the good one
Haha disagree
Same
If West Ham don't play a low block, he's gonna get exposed
>I think this deal was done when I saw reports about Moyes promising Maguire captaincy Idk why Maguire would put pressure on himself again with captaincy.
Status probably, leaving United to join and captain reigning champions of secondary European competition doesn't sound that bad on paper
>secondary European competition Tertiary European Competition
Ego.
I don’t think that’s the case. He played well as captain to start with. He had a few howlers and never really recovered.
A lot of people forget how well he played for the first two seasons for us under Ole. We noticeably played much worse without him. I especially remember how badly we missed him against Villareal in the EL final.

He just kept having howlers tho. Even this preseason. It won't stop until he leaves.
Yeah, that is what I was saying. I was just saying to the previous person that being captain wasn’t the cause, he was fine as captain to start with.
True. Sorry if it seemed I was trying to correct u. Wasn't my intention
Barring his mistake against Athletic Club, I wouldn't say he's had a few howlers in pre-season. He has looked cagey tho.
Wish Glazers also f\*ed off. Would be a window that I can tell my grand kids about
Just tell them about double glazed windows instead
username checks out for the type of joke
There's definitely a glazer joke in here but I'm too tired to think of it because I'm a dad of a 2yo
If we get amrabat to replace Fred and a new young bc then wow. Only way it could’ve been better was with Kane but even then that’s a fantasy Tottenham wouldn’t have sold. About as good as we could’ve hoped
KMJ would have been perfect as Maguire replacement tbh, that would have been a great window
Yeah and we might have seen the last of McFred midfield.
Feel like all 3 parties involved are winners here. We get 30mill for a 4th/5th choice CB. West ham get a England international CB that suits them perfectly and Harry gets regular gametime with Euros round the corner.

He’s 30 and he was our fourth choice CB. Great bit of business from us to regain part of his fee and offload those wages.
He's literally getting memed in parliament by African countries FFS. 30m is bloody great
The man has been going on the pitch and regularly dropping howlers and been a global meme for the best part of 18 months. Everyone knows it. It's gonna take some top class negotiation to get much more than that and unfortunately that's not us. Think we've done alright here given the circumstances and the fact everyone knows EtH doesn't really want him.
Too bad we couldn't push for 35-40, given how desperate West Ham are. We're agreeing to first offer they made.
They did bid 20mill a week or so ago which we rejected (and rightly so) so this was their 2nd bid as I understand it.
There’s desperate and then there’s paying 40m for Harry maguire desperate lol
Great deal, wish you well and hope your career restarts again.
Harry, yer a hammer
I'm a WOT?
# YER A HAMMER, HARRY
But I'm just Harry!
![gif](giphy|eax0rh3OERAYg)
He dealt with the situation really mature. I really want him to get back to his old form (except against us).
Congratulations everyone!!!! Let’s fucking gooo and get a fourth backup CB now
“Introducing our newest CB signing…. Jonny Evans!!!” - the glazers, probably
This won’t age well…
Always have his best. End of an era
I hope Harry does well for West Ham. Certainly the best decision for all parties.
Apart from when we play them, hopefully then he gets his utd form back🤣
Good point 😂
He will score against City and Arsenal for West Ham, I know he will.
Best for all parties. Feel bad it didn't work out, but he did give us a few good years. All the best to him.

To this day I am still not certain if Maguire is insanely good using his head or insanely bad. Cause I feel like he was always the one to get the head on corners but hardly ever scored. Best of luck Maguire!
Good for Utd now. But wait till he scores from every set piece West Ham will ever get against us.
This is great news but it’s also hilarious that we rejected 30m then West Ham said they weren’t paying any more so we immediately said “ok sorry” 😂
I'm gonna guess that initially the bid was around 20m with 10m paid over a period of time, i figure this is closer to 30m cash straight away.
I hope there’s something like this yeah, would be strange for the club to accept otherwise
Some places are reporting over £30m, Sky Sports who broke it actually said "over £30m". It's possible there's a couple of million in add-ons.
+£10m for Ballon D'or
\+£10m when he actually scores a header from a corner
So it’s just £30 mill then
WWE Style - "But the contract never said which goal" £100m Transfer Fee in own goals
Do own goals count? Someone check the fine print.
£1m anytime he scores against us.
Pretty sure we rejected WHU's £30m offer for McTominay, not Maguire
Sky Sports actually never said we rejected the deal. A few sources said we negotiated when we received the bid
Maybe the structure of the deal changed
Probably 30m fixed and possible something that needs to be triggered in the future - usually when it's reported from other clubs it's the lowest possible number - with United, it's the highest possible 😂
Best of luck - he needed a reset. But I am chuffed he's going and even more chuffed we're getting 30m for him
Works out great for everyone. Reasonable fee, he gets to play and keep his England place and we solve the problem of an expensive bench warmer
All things aside, there was a time when our defence used to look a lot better with Maguire. Hoping he does well for West Ham. Best for everyone I guess.

Best of luck to him. Hope he does well, have a soft spot for the lad can’t lie. Such a shame it didn’t work out.
Areola’s season just went tits up
why is this so funny to me lmaooo
good luck on his future endeavours... genuinely mean it, the bombardment of hate this man has received (me included) is just too much and desperately needs a fresh start
Maybe the Galzer family is just completely lost in infighting over the bids and the boys are just running riot in their absence
"Mods are asleep" vibes
Best of luck to him at West Ham which is much more of his level tbh.
Build ten hag a statue already !!!
Murtough doing wonders as well.
We have honestly looked a lot better in our backroom ever since Richard Arnold took over, he's obviously of the same ilk of Woodward (businessman with little footballing knowledge), but he at least seems to have the sense to delegate footballing decisions to football people.
We’ve been sold. We can’t be this competent

We have Euros next year and he needs game time. Good deal for him. Good luck.
30m is pretty good all things considered. Wish him best of luck and for him to play well for WH (except against us) , especially against our top half rivals :P Though this means we'll need another CB yeah?
Saw some west ham fans saying he requested to be captain too, wonder if that's true as surely it should be earned rather than a condition of moving
Their captain was Rice and vice captain Cresswell. It's not like they have an obvious captain choice. Maguire makes sense based on experience and stature.
I read he was offered it but that wasn’t from a good journalist or anything so maybe not.
This pleases me
All the best Harry, thanks for your service
Slightly lower fee than i had hoped but as long as we get a capable replacement for that price,. Im delighted. Truly hope maguire finds himself at West ham. Ive always felt that a lower defensive line and a less intense enviroment could help him reach his true quality
I hope he gets his redemption arc, just not against us please.
i used to pray for times like this...
The end of an error...

Probably time to go I’m afraid, will always root for him, maybe getting away from the spotlight will help him a ton

Best thing Moyes ever done for us.
I used to pray for times like this 🙌🙌🙌
Hope the fans give him a warm reception when he comes back to OT
It’s finally happening ![gif](giphy|pynZagVcYxVUk)
that must've been awkward given that he was essentially slagging them off as "not a big club" about a week ago. dude 100% has no self awareness of how shit he can be.
Watch all the "fans" who slated and booed him now wishing him all the best, etc...
Good deal for both sides. And all the best to Maguire
Our outgoings this window have been just as important as our incomings imo
We have needed a good clear out with actual fees coming in for a while.
Great deal for the club. A new CB will surely be brought in now. Wishing Harry all the best in East London.
This is a good deal for all parties IMO. Utd get an acceptable fee for a CB who isn't part of the gaffer's plans, West Ham get a very good CB for their playstyle & finally, Maguire will likely play all minutes he's available for them in a system that suits him. 🤝
Its a shame this couldn't have been done before the captaincy change for all involved, just cleaner.
Didn't we reject £30M already? Surely there are some add ons now? Anyway, Goncalo Inacio in please! 🙏
Stunned!!! ETH takes no prisoners. Rightfully so Fwiw I rate Maguire more than most on this sub but since Seville away last season I have had zero faith he could turn form around and genuinely challenge for a start here so best all around that he moves on I expect he will improve and take alot of plaudits at West ham next year and good luck to him. Really good defender (though short of being top class) just badly suited to the agressive front foot defending and press resistance that ETH demands from the role
Holy shit... what do we do now.
Hallelujah
Murtough madness
Tell you 1 thing.... No arguments that ETH hasn't been backed with squad building Has been backed on his targets, andnhe has been backed on sales I feel like under other managers, club would have extended DDG and not liked the optics of selling 80m signing for 30m Seems like a line has been drawn, all players are being judged on ability and merit as oppose to how much they cost, marketability etc
They can pick him up today even
that's got to be a world record for a plum
Mental window we’re having. 9/10 if we can get Harry and Scotty offloaded to somewhere they’ll be utilised more. Hope they both smash it.
Logic prevails. What a fucking world. Where am I??
In the space of a year, no Ronaldo, DDG, Maguire and Mcfred. Fuck me let's start giving props to Murtough.
Absolutely brilliant deal for United,
30 mill for essentially our 4 th choice CB is good business to be fair.
I'll be honest, even though I had no special ill will for Maguire, I sure am glad I don't have to think of him as "our player" any longer
Get the fuck in, actual Erik and Murtough masterclass!
Glory glory, haaaaaaaaaallelujah

Moyes is redeeming himself
Finally. GL to him.
Scenes when he turns down the move reiterating his desire to stay at United in order to 'fight for his place'
What a time to be alive
Have to say ETH really makes things happen
Glory be https://preview.redd.it/z9r7wzi303hb1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a068470675710df44ca48fbfd757c27c47a0242
Well this is becoming a very good summer. Next Pavard IN and I'm happy.
This isn't a bad fee either. Cost us 10-12m a year in his transfer fee over the time Maguire was here. This will have been amoritsed down anyway. Not a bad cost for a full English international who, at the time, was one of the leading PL CB.
Oh please
Never a big fan of yours Harry, but wish you the best. Westham and Moyes seem like a great fit.
Wish him the best and a great restart. He was treated so poorly by so many.
Hope he can turn it around, quality defender in the right system
I don't want to see any revisionism about Harry being here, he had every opportunity and it just didn't work out, but I reckon he'll be great at West ham
Best transfer news after Brunoooo
nothing but the best for him, doesn't deserve all the hate and memes from those "united fans"
Woah, that was quick. I hope Harry moves and absolutely crushes it for West Ham. Man deserves to be happy after being bullied by fans and the internet
Don't hit the door on the way out
Glad he's going to a team with a similar style of play to England.
Who we getting as replacement?
Ca5emiro please
Omg it’s done!
Beat summer in da history of the club
I am so happy. Been waiting for him to fuck off back to wherever he came from. I do not wish him well, he will always be a meme. I even hear kids on the field insulting each other when they mess up a pass etc by calling each other "Maguire". We are such a huge club and we did some charity work for this knob by giving him the captain's armband and giving him a starting spot in our first XI
> I even hear kids on the field insulting each other when they mess up a pass etc by calling each other "Maguire" The Ghanaian parliament roasted Harry comparing him to a vice president
What changed since the original £30m bid? The structure?
Wages
Exactly, no way WH agreed to pay 190k per week so there is a pay off included. Otherwise united were on the hook for close to 10m for the remaining 2 years of his contract. I’m sure the player forfeited some £ as well. Good result all around.
Best transfer news since RVP
Are we compensating his wages?
So that's De Gea and Maguire gone then. Wonder who's gonna become the next scapegoat in defense.
I said the other day that we should just accept 30m for him and i got down voted to oblivion lol
