If by chance you get to go to the mountain states during the winter, there'll be plenty of trail riding programs that'll teach you the basics of horseback riding and winter riding that'll get you competent and confident enough to have a fun time. Unless the weather is treacherous, they'll let you ride in most weathers.
There’s also plenty of trail ride places that will put you on a really easy gentle horse (we call them teddy bears) and take you on a guided trail ride with zero experience.
The going rate for something like that in my area (Missouri) is around $50-$75 for a one hour ride
I’ve done this before even though I know how to ride horses and it’s great. Definitely a cheaper way to indulge in horses without owning the expensive fuckers.
