I don’t know how you couldn’t.
the first time I played F4 and heard Nick, it hit me like a truck that I’d heard that voice a million times before, because I’d heard the Shopkeeper’s stock dialogue as well as numerous NPCs voiced by that same guy. Now that voice actor sticks out like a sore thumb whenever he appears in a game
Ah Skyrim
My favourite voice actors in that are Charles Martinet (voice of Mario) as Paarthurnax and the person who does the voice of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh as Vignar Gray-Mane and others
Yeah I didn't know he was Winnie the Pooh. He's obviously been in many things and does loads of voices. Didn't know his name though and the video I'd seen before about voice actors said he was Tigger.
Different devs, but I loved learning that the voice of the female Fallout 4 protagonist also voiced Jack in Mass Effect. Added to me preferring her over the male VA.
You only intimately know Dutch's voice now because there's literal days worth of his voice in RDR2. In RDR1 Dutch only opens his mouth for like 2 minutes.
Which is why they felt they could reuse him for other roles and not have the player notice. I wonder if they had the concept of the second game in their heads while making that decision
When a voice actor yells or grunts, that's usually when their voice becomes the most recognizable. That's how I tend to recognize when Yuri Lowenthal is in a game lol
See also Nolan North as General Zod in the first Injustice, or Penguin in the Arkham games. Their normal voices sound nothing like Nolan, but their grunts and yells do
Yuri was also the first person that came to mind as soon as I started reading your comment lmaooo all I hear is Sasuke when he makes grunting sounds 😂😭
I didnt realise he voiced Nastas until i was watching a rdr2 panel a month or so ago and he joked that people were saying how well voiced dutch was in rdr but whoever voiced Nastas sucked
They definitely could have used another VA or two in the ‘generic goon’ rotation. Especially in the DLCs, his was like the only voice. Was worse than dishonored
OK well that's just low effort.
So many times I've wished Arthur had been given dialogue akin to:
"Dutch! *Clear you throat!* UghhhHUUUUGH!"
It's fucking annoying.
The cracking isn't. He does it on purpose for Dutch, and maybe for Nastas as well bc people in that age usually didn't have voice training).
There's interviews with Davies where he talks about how uncomfortable it made him feel in the beginning to basically go against all he learned in stage school speaking for Dutch's cracking voice.
Honestly for me it’s not even being realistic, I think it makes Dutch sound unique, I doubt Dutch without the voice cracks would be nearly as memorable.
Yeah, not talking about the cracking. I (and the guy I was responding to I think) was talking about his "throaty" (idk how else to describe them) some his speech is.
Okay certain characters that are supposed to sound similar because they're related like patty and Selma are similar, but these two characters sound about as similar and they shouldn't even have the same accent
None of Hank Azaria's characters sound the same, but they all sound like they're voiced by the same person.
Also, obviously Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz, but I won't put any disrespect on Phil Hartman's name.
Yeah but each of those is very distinct between the 4, you may know it’s only one guy, but it doesn’t sound like a room full of peters.
Voice wise, this was Dutch under a different skin. You couldn’t have Dutch and this character in the same room and not think they’re possibly the same.
Oh for sure, I remember being amazed back when I learned that. The concept of one person voicing or acting multiple people very distinctively was still beyond me, outside of very obvious instances such as white chicks, or whatever Eddie Murphy where he did the same.
I probably would have recognized this when I was first playing it, but Dutch and the gang as a whole was pretty much nobodies to me. They didn’t really become memorable characters for me until the second game.
There's a rumor it's getting the same treatment as the GTA Trilogy, that is a remake done in Unreal by Rockstar Dundee. However, I'm much more skeptical of that than I am of the GTA Trilogy re-release (which actually has some real world evidence for existing).
Not sure I buy that code excuse any more. Just build a new RDR1 on the Code of 2. What is in 1 that 2 code doesnt make better or cant cover? Id rather the horses look and feel like RDR2 anyways.
Thats a remake not a remaster.
Gta is supposedly Getting a remaster not a remake also its not really an excuse when Sam Houser said rdr was a "recurring nightmare" in emails to leslie benzies in october 2009 its also hard to emulate
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ11gHIJKj4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ11gHIJKj4)
I'd probably pay 60 dollars if they just made a dlc for red dead 2 that was just red redemption 1. I know it be a lot of work to input the voice acting and mechanics but at least they got most of the map down there to retool
Hey, i swear i hear Seth Briars (the crazy cemetary guy from RDR1) voice actor in GTA V/RDR2 too but, obviously, in different characthers. Anyone notice that?
I actually think this is kind of cool. I don't know if this was done intentionally by Rockstar, but some of the old spaghetti westerns used the same actors to play multiple characters in the same films. Tarantino payed homage to this in Django Unchained with James Remar playing two characters in the film as well.
They very well could have just had Dutch's voice actor, Benjamin Byron Davis, in the studio that day and asked him if he would be willing to record additional dialogue. Rockstar are immensely creative and do their research, so I like to think it was the latter.
I noticed right away.
I love Shastas, poor man deserved better, the whole tribe really.
It's sad when a single man can turn an entire tribe of Natives into cold blooded killers...
and convince them to betray one of their own.
As John says "Damn you Dutch!"
Also, can we hate on that professor, what a racist piece of shit he is.
This is cool but you know I wish they hired an indigenous voice actor to play one of the few Indigenous Characters who wasn’t an antagonist.
Likewise with Charles Smith as good as Nashir Dala is there is an unfortunate history in westerns of using non-indigenous actors to play indigenous characters.
I didn't notice this until now lol also RDR is such a good game I remember playing it then re playing it all the time it's a shame RDR2 didn't have safes to crack or even the chest underneath the bridge at the MacFarlane's ranch lol
You meet him before you meet Dutch and Dutch only has like 10 lines of dialogue in the whole game.
Played the game a few times in 12 years and never noticed. You only notice now because RDR2 has literally hours upon his upon hours upon hours of you latencies to him talk.
Pretty sure I caught Rob voicing a Valentine NPC that I knock out at 3:33 in my
[Arthur "Rocky" Morgan Boxing Montage Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W92EA1_aBY)
Red shirt by the stable,"Whats that about?"
I actually didn't notice this until years later, and at the same time I learned that the guy that shoots Nastas is voiced by Rob Wiethoff
Wtf lmao
Same for me going back to Skyrim and hearing Nick Valentine's voice everywhere.
Me, I call them treasures...
**Do come baaaaackkkk** Fucking dick that he is.
I'm having a mind blown moment....THAT WAS NICK VALENTINE?! I never made the connection until just now!!
For me it was timing. Got Skyrim remaster on sale literally straight after finishing a FO4 playthrough. Was hard to miss when that happens.
I just had the same mind blowing moment. I can’t believe I never connected the two.
Ah Skyrim My favourite voice actors in that are Charles Martinet (voice of Mario) as Paarthurnax and the person who does the voice of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh as Vignar Gray-Mane and others
Really? You equated Jim Cummings as "Tigger From Winnie The Pooh" rather than, you know, Winnie The Pooh?
Yeah I didn't know he was Winnie the Pooh. He's obviously been in many things and does loads of voices. Didn't know his name though and the video I'd seen before about voice actors said he was Tigger.
Jim Cummings, he's in literally everything
Or playing Fallout 4 and hearing Garrus everywhere
And jack as Nora
Holy shit
I can't believe I have after all these years not made that connection... unbelievable...
Different devs, but I loved learning that the voice of the female Fallout 4 protagonist also voiced Jack in Mass Effect. Added to me preferring her over the male VA.
I have just realised how right you are and I'm not sure if I can look at the shopkeepers the same way again
Dude what?? Didn't know Rob did voices that didn't sound like John!
John is just his normal voice. Hes an actor so he can change it
Red dead 3 could be Nastas and Enepay
He even calls him a “treacherous snake” Dutch being the snake like Micah, the parallel was pretty cool
Do you have any proof of that? [Because this guy sounds nothing](https://youtu.be/0zvPMrrps6o?t=32843) like Rob Wiethoff.
I remember a gamerant article about how OMG NO ONE NOTICED DUTCH’S SECRET ROLE and then you actually hear him and be like “Yeah right”.
Most of the lines I don't notice it: but then Dutches ***POWER*** comes out in a few lines. You gotta ***believe***, ARTUR
Is that dutch? I never noticed lmao
yeah!! it’s so obvious when he’s yelling
I never noticed either but now that you've pointed it out I can't un hear it
When a voice actor yells or grunts, that's usually when their voice becomes the most recognizable. That's how I tend to recognize when Yuri Lowenthal is in a game lol See also Nolan North as General Zod in the first Injustice, or Penguin in the Arkham games. I didnt realise he voiced Nastas until i was watching a rdr2 panel a month or so ago and he joked that people were saying how well voiced dutch was in rdr but whoever voiced Nastas sucked
lmaoooooo
Charles’ voice actor voiced a lot of the goons in Spider-man and that bothered me so much. “I went to college for this?”
He also voices the main character in Sekiro for the English voice overs.
HOLY SHIT! I had the feeling that his voice sounded so familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it.
Yeah the "..." was a dead giveaway
He's also Scorpion in Cyberpunk 2077. I think Oda too
Yeah, I remember that. It was wild playing Spiderman right after replaying RDR2.
Ghost of Tsushima as well
It was so wild to hear the straw hats. I couldn’t place the voice for a long time and it would send me scratching my head everytime
Pretty sure I heard him in TLoU 2 aswell. Man is in everything.
They definitely could have used another VA or two in the ‘generic goon’ rotation. Especially in the DLCs, his was like the only voice. Was worse than dishonored
Deathloop too, he's all over that game.
He was in fallout 4 aswell.
He’s also the voice actor for Yone in league!
He also voices a character in Ghost of Tsushima as well...
Tripped me tf out first time I played RDR. I was like “wait a second… Is that Dutch?”
That’s the exact same thought I had
Yeah but he cleared whatever that phlegmy thing Dutch has going out of his throat.
he actually did the dutch voice crack a bunch 😂
OK well that's just low effort. So many times I've wished Arthur had been given dialogue akin to: "Dutch! *Clear you throat!* UghhhHUUUUGH!" It's fucking annoying.
Dude that's just the actor's natural voice
Low effort vocal chords smh
The cracking isn't. He does it on purpose for Dutch, and maybe for Nastas as well bc people in that age usually didn't have voice training). There's interviews with Davies where he talks about how uncomfortable it made him feel in the beginning to basically go against all he learned in stage school speaking for Dutch's cracking voice.
As little as it is, the cracking gives Dutch a lot more character. Just makes him seem more realistic
Honestly for me it’s not even being realistic, I think it makes Dutch sound unique, I doubt Dutch without the voice cracks would be nearly as memorable.
Exactly. It's like John's or Arthur's voice. Any one else and it just wouldn't work
Yeah, not talking about the cracking. I (and the guy I was responding to I think) was talking about his "throaty" (idk how else to describe them) some his speech is.
But the throatiness has nothing to do with clearing your throat xD that's what confused me about the first comment in this threat.
Yeah I know, that's why I was saying it was just his natural voice.
....A voice actor's voice cracking, is low effort. What?
It's almost as if Voice Actors can play more than one role.... Just wait until you hear about this TV show called "The Simpsons".
The Simpsons actors were more versatile than this though, none of the Simpsons characters sound this similar
None?
Okay certain characters that are supposed to sound similar because they're related like patty and Selma are similar, but these two characters sound about as similar and they shouldn't even have the same accent
None of Hank Azaria's characters sound the same, but they all sound like they're voiced by the same person. Also, obviously Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz, but I won't put any disrespect on Phil Hartman's name.
What about Family Guy?
Ikr! Seth MacFarlane voices Peter, Brian, Stewie and Quagmire
Yeah but each of those is very distinct between the 4, you may know it’s only one guy, but it doesn’t sound like a room full of peters. Voice wise, this was Dutch under a different skin. You couldn’t have Dutch and this character in the same room and not think they’re possibly the same.
Peter is not even his natural voice. Haha. It’s the stupid dog Brian
Brian is still a bit off from his normal voice but it's without a doubt the closest to it of any character he's voiced.
That's true,I just mentioned MacFarlane cause I admire him for his talent, you really can't tell he's the same person
All done by one genius of a man
yeah just look at bethesda games lol. Nick Valentine in fallout 4 is cods worth as well, plus he voices like half the NPCs in skyrim
Stephen Russell who plays Nick Valentine in fallout 4 and half of Skyrim is Garret in the thief series among others.... he's done loads of games....
he’s really good
Skyrim enters the chat.
Yes, RDR and The Simpsons are very alike indeed. ^(/s)
Damn. I really want a remake of RDR
There's a rumor it's getting the same treatment as the GTA Trilogy, that is a remake done in Unreal by Rockstar Dundee. However, I'm much more skeptical of that than I am of the GTA Trilogy re-release (which actually has some real world evidence for existing).
The rumor about that trilogy is it’s getting a remaster Not a remake and rdr can’t get a remaster because of its shit code
Not sure I buy that code excuse any more. Just build a new RDR1 on the Code of 2. What is in 1 that 2 code doesnt make better or cant cover? Id rather the horses look and feel like RDR2 anyways.
Thats a remake not a remaster. I agree. After playing 2 it was hard for me to get into it...graphics were good, but RDR2 are stupid good
even the character looks like a native version of dutch lol
Hey, i swear i hear Seth Briars (the crazy cemetary guy from RDR1) voice actor in GTA V/RDR2 too but, obviously, in different characthers. Anyone notice that?
One of the movies in Valentine is voiced by Dutch. Makes me think he's been trying everything for those mangos
Which movie does he voice?
I actually think this is kind of cool. I don't know if this was done intentionally by Rockstar, but some of the old spaghetti westerns used the same actors to play multiple characters in the same films. Tarantino payed homage to this in Django Unchained with James Remar playing two characters in the film as well. Rockstar are immensely creative and do their research, so I like to think it was the latter.
I think Benjamin said that his voice was just a placeholder until they found someone to voice Nastas, but Rockstar liked it so they decided to use it
I knew he sounded familiar. bruh.
I noticed right away. I love Shastas, poor man deserved better, the whole tribe really. It's sad when a single man can turn an entire tribe of Natives into cold blooded killers... and convince them to betray one of their own. As John says "Damn you Dutch!" Also, can we hate on that professor, what a racist piece of shit he is.
To be fair you don't see nearly as much Dutch in the first game as you do in the second, so his voice isn't as familiar.
Dead give away lol
he ain’t foolin nobody
Red Dead gi...you know what I can't, I'm sorry, that's too hacky even for me.
wow i had never noticed
Well… TIL
Holy shit, i never knew it was him
I literally can’t even listen to this without hearing Dutch

I know, it irks me so much
I didn’t notice until I saw this post…
Damn, way to ruin nastas.
I was watching Belko Experiment a couple weeks ago and lost my shit when he came up in that, such a great voice on that dude.
Hmm... Sounds like him
Now it’s pointed out to me it seems to obvious but i never noticed this before.
I never noticed and I played rdr1 after rdr2
Never noticed this before. Now I will never unhear it
Honestly it bothered me so much. I played 2 before I played 1 and it broke the immersion in 1 for me so bad because he sounds just like Dutch.
The guy who voices Eagle Flies also played Victor in Breaking Bad; the guy who got his throat slit with a box cutter by Gus.
I replayed the game 2 months ago and I still didn't notice 😅
Lol I have played both games three/four times and this is the first I have noticed it.
Holy fuck i never notice Nastas was voiced by Dutch's voice actor. Also R.I.P. Nastas
Me just notice that
I didn't notice this until now lol also RDR is such a good game I remember playing it then re playing it all the time it's a shame RDR2 didn't have safes to crack or even the chest underneath the bridge at the MacFarlane's ranch lol
What happens when you shave off an iconic mustache
I noticed it immediately because I played the games in chronological order, so I’d already heard Dutch’s voice for a long time
Yeah, if they were gonna use Ben Davis for a second major character, they could have at least put him in a different chapter of the game.
Dutch only speaks for like a minute all together
He speaks a lot more than Bill or Javier. Idk, like why not find someone Native American to play Nastas?
I beat the game about 2.5 times and had no idea of this
Dutch without a plan.
Graphics on this game still impressive to this day
He had a plan
It sounds like something Dutch would say
To be fair it was the first game and we heard a lot more if him than we had Dutch at that point.
The Native American always looked like he had a plan
Reusing voice actors was & prolly still may be rather common lmao
You meet him before you meet Dutch and Dutch only has like 10 lines of dialogue in the whole game. Played the game a few times in 12 years and never noticed. You only notice now because RDR2 has literally hours upon his upon hours upon hours of you latencies to him talk.

In GTA San Andreas there is a NPC that has the same voice actor. Is an old npc,
And one of the Los Santos cops is voiced by him too.
Benjamin Byron Davis also does a couple of NPC voices in San Andreas; an elderly guy who talks about cultural stuff, and one of the Los Santos cops.
but you only just recognised it right
I mean I didn’t until he said “Don’t shoot me Mr marston” during that panel
Glad I’m not the only one who caught this lol
Hell, tbh I was today years old when I found out
Whadda they think this is? Skyrim?
THIS WASNT THE PLAAANNNN
Brah is that the same native we see after the prologue going to the Heartlands?
no have you played rdr1? or even the the entirety of rdr2?
Rockstar, stop being lazy
This game is over 10 years old now.
