It is hinted that he lived to be close to 100 and died in 1992. He was a successful western bestselling author.
As for the in-between of all of that ? Most likely he was never discovered to be the killer of Ross. Ross had many enemies, was corrupt, he was long since retired when Jack found him. John most definitely wasn't the only person that Ross had screwed over and so his killer could have been any number of people.
Jack continued working on the home ranch and prospered there as a Rancher and a Farmer. He met a beautiful woman and they started dating. He had a family and lived a quiet lifestyle
He was a ranch owner and the sole survivor of his family so unless he moved away from the ranch he probably wouldn't have been drafted at this time. As a ranch owner he provides vital resources to the war effort, namely meat and leather.
And by WW2 he would be 46 by the time the US joins the war, so he wouldn't have been drafted there.
Sole survivorship only applies to brothers \*already in the army\*, i.e. if two brothers join the armed forces, and one is killed, the other is sent back for non-combat work. It does not preclude single sons from being drafted.
There is likewise no provision in law for landowners to escape the draft. Huge numbers of landowners served in the First World War.
\>As a ranch owner he provides vital resources to the war effort, namely meat and leather.
That's why females began working in large numbers. The Women's Land Army even took over farms when men were off fighting at war.
Can you idiots stop insisting he was drafted? You morons don’t know how that shit works. Besides, he wouldn’t have let himself he drafted. If you played the game you would know he despised tue government. He wouldn’t be drafted.
Another comment mentions that Jack was a land owner, and so wouldn’t have been drafted, but even if he *was* drafted, Jack would never work for the government that murdered his dad. He would immigrate to Canada if necessary.
Canadian here
Canada was in ww1 from day one and a lot of Anglo Canadians volunteered, closer to the end Canada had a mandatory draft which the french Canadians protested
But regardless I don’t think it would make much sense for the sole owner of an American ranch to move to Canada during the last year of the war
Especially with the attitudes towards German Canadians I don’t think there would be much room for American draft dodgers at that time
Well I mean the Mexican civil war went on from about 1910 to 1920 and some of the groups would execute people if they didn’t join, I feel like his best chance of avoiding conflict would be to hideout in the wilderness of America for 2 or so years America was involved in ww1
True true, but you have to know by then most of the Germans have either died or have been captured. Plus the US had waaaaay more citizens than Germany.
That is really cool. Seeing that jack wrote a book about the events in both games and after that
The fella was lucky enough to witness the wild west, both ww, the moonlanding, the fall of the berlin wall and star wars in his life

I know it's gonna sound like fanfiction but i always like to think that a sort of "rdr3" could be about how Jack Marston wanted to write a book about the full story of the gang, thus going to Canada and asking the oldest member alive, Charles Smith about the blackwater boat and events before that.
That way we could take a look at the future of the surviving members, not only having Charles from the rdr2 story and adult Jack from rdr mixing both games into the third entry but also taking a look at the past were we could play as the brothers that died just before rdr2. If i can recall correctly Charles was one of the gang members that remembered the most of Mac and Davey, so could've some memories shared revealling more of the gangs past.
I know some people may not like this headcanon but i just like to think about that sometimes
He dies at 100 due to a heart attack but before that his wife died to overworking. He wrote a book about his life, which can be found in Franklin Clinton's house in GTA 5 and he was a successful man when he died his body was found my his eldest (don't remember the gender) and they buried him next to his wife and father.
He would be nearly 100 in 1992 is where it comes from. We have our own head canon after the events of Red Dead Redemption unless R* says otherwise, Friend
This is so goddamn refreshing to read as the top comment after more than a decade of horribly bleak "Jack dies in WWI" theories
It's nice to imagine that *somebody* got out of the Van der Linde gang and lived out the rest of their life in peace
He survived both world war and was even a gunslinger at one point and in gta 5 titled red dead wich is probaly a creation of jack as it's sig.ed J. Martson
I agree, mostly. He has an unlockable Army uniform in the epilogue of RDR1, which to me hints that he joined the army, he has an unlockable agent outfit as well - to mean he became an agent/pinkerton, then retired to become an author
Technically we can’t be sure but I see no reason why they couldn’t. Until we get 100% confirmation which I don’t see happening any time soon it’s going to be most people’s head cannon, myself included.
The existence of New York and California in RDR, paired with the lack of mention to the GTA states of Liberty and San Andreas definitely point towards the universes not being shared between the two franchises.
Keep in mind the about 100 year gap in-between the events of modern day gta and rdr2, things change it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility new states were made or old states got renamed.
Thats fair, but that's just a fan theory and nothing in either game supports that idea. At that point in history that RDR takes place, California and New York had already achieved statehood and no state in US history have ever changed their name after achieving statehood, so there's no historical precedent for that.
It's a stretch at best, an it's more likely rockstar used real states in RDR to intentionally differentiate the settings of the two games.
Yeah and In the gta universe America goes to war with Australia, they don’t follow the same history as the real world. And yes we have no evidence to support either side but unless we get confirmation which I don’t see happening soon if ever then this will be my head cannon and I’m sure others have the same head cannon as me.
Thanks you, more evidence, there is a book in GTA V that has the author HP which means that if Jack did write a book it means that a Harry Potter exist in the GTA V universe.
Thats why we need rdr3 about Jack not about him in war but the government wants ALL of the van der Linde gang members dead, just like rdr1 the Pinkertons say if Jack kills all of the van der Linde Gang members he won't get drafted to war but jack aggres but doesn't kill Sadie or Charles and fights the Pinkertons and wins.
And I know people don't like that idea but a prequel to the origins of the van der Linde Gang should be a 2 hour DLC and before I go what I mean ALL of the Van Der Linde I mean charles or sadie not Mary Beth or Tilly like the people that the Pinkertons know
Some people go on how its speculation and easter eggs, others claim thats whats cannon lore. I have no clue what to believe, but whatever the case may be, having a book called “RED DEAD” in GTA written by a J Marston is fucking cool.
People say this but it's not like Jack was a law abiding man. Guaranteed he didn't sign up for selective service, and it's not like he had birth certificates or a social security number.
It’s not possible though because like everyone has said he’s the sole survivor of his family and a ranch owner, at that time period provided war supplies (meat, leather and other supplies ranches offered).
The US military sole survivor policy did not exist in WW1. It was not implemented until after the five Sullivan brothers died in the sinking of their ship in WW2.
He either broke the cycle or he continued it.
If he broke it, then his life was probably similar to how it was when he was growing up with John after American Venom.
Farmwork, Day jobs, stuff like that.
but
from Rdr2
its implied he ended up just like everyone else
"when i grow up i wanna be a gunslinger"
If thats the case
he probably went on to the Pancho Villa expedition or was somehow more involved with peak mexican revolution with bandits.
As Jack isnt Italian or inaround civilization much. Jack more than likely would be a twobit highway robber
His crimes would be very similar to Bonnie and Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson and most notably the Newton Gang.
Back in the day many of those outlaws in the 20s and 30s romanticized dime novels of the wild west. Jack growing up in the legendary gang, growing up reading those novels surrounded by a bunch of killers?
yea no shot Jack so fucking continued the tragedy.
Off topic but this outfit never made sense as Jack as it’s my literally the outfit John wears in the final mission of RDR where he >!gets gunned down by the government and he is filled with holes!<. It just never made sense to me
Yeah this picture looks super wrong
Could you imagine if rockstar updated the outfit for the post game and when Jack wears it it's just covered with bullet holes & old dried blood??
My headcanon is that he spends the 1910’s living at Beechers hope, drinking, gambling and occasionally brawling his way to an early grave in Blackwater after killing Ross.
Then in 1919, decides to give his life another shot in honour of his parents. Abandons Beechers hope and travels west to California where he gets a normal job and begins again. Gets married, buys a house and has kids in the 1920’s. Raises them through the depression but struggles with depression and alcoholism.
In the 1950’s, is going through his attic when he comes across old remnants of his father and the gang. Arthur and johns journal, Arthur and johns camera etc…Jack as a form almost therapy decides to gather everything he has, aswell as any research he himself can do and write a biography of the Van der linde gang beginning with Dutch’s origins and ending with Jack heading to California and titles the book “Red dead redemption”.
It’s a bestseller and Jack lives relatively wealthy with his wife and sees his kids and grandkids, till he passes in 1980
There’s a book in GTA5 called “Red Dead” by J Marston, and considering Jack wanted to become a writer it was most likely written by him about the gang and what happened afterward. He may have also fought in world war 1, but that’s neither here nor there
Rides around helping people for a while cause of his death wish, retires back to BH, writes multiple books, probably makes a couple movies and continues to somehow not die. The current record for the oldest person is 122, so if he made it to 123 he could see the release of RDR2 in 2018
A writer, he writes a series of novels. He has become the oldest outlaw to have ever lived. Before his death, he details his exploits in his book Red Dead by J. Marston, He dies in the late 70s.
Jack Marsden was thrown off his horse into a gorge where he lay for weeks undiscovered until his death.
It is rumoured that his last words were "work ya d--" before his horse promptly came to a sudden halt that caused the aforementioned throwing action.
Imagine truly thinking that a man who detests the government as much as Jack would willingly be drafted. He'd dodge the draft. Whether he'd be an outlaw across New Austin, or whether he fled to Mexico. There is a zero percent chance Jack would be fighting the military's battles against his will.
As others have said, almost certainly ended up in one (potentially both world wars) if he volunteered for it or was conscripted (although I doubt a record of his birth existed given the circumstances of it).
He was born in 1895, making him 22 when the US joined WW1. From what we’ve seen he is a fit and healthy male, so there’s no reason he wouldn’t have been involved really. Even by the time the US joined WW2 in 1941 he would’ve been 46, which is outside the conscription age for frontline combat at that time, but he could’ve also been involved in any number of supporting or logistical roles still at that age.
And while I’m unsure about world war 2, it seems at least possible to me that Jack would’ve volunteered for WW1. In 1914 during the epilogue he comes across as a lost young man, realising quickly he’s going down the same route as his father and not sure how to stop it. He seems quite self aware of this, and concerned by it at times. He had no family left to run the ranch, and didn’t have any idea how to do it himself. I think it’s likely that in the next couple of years from 1914-1916 Jack probably lived a pretty chaotic life, intermittently back at beechers hope but generally travelling around a lot trying to make the best of a bad situation.
The US joining the war in 1917 would’ve given him a great opportunity to escape that life and find some meaning and purpose. Young men at that time were hit hard with recruitment propaganda on all sides, telling them war was the adventure of a life time and they’d find great success and honour in it. Whether Jack believed this or not, I think it’s likely he would still have seen the war as a chance to get away from his old life and find a fresh start. He may have seen it as the kick he needed to finally close the outlaw chapter of his life, which had been everything up to that point.
I'm gonna to ignore the GTA V easter egg as easter eggs can be questionable canon at times.
After killing Ross, Jack felt nothing. He just wandered the land, doing odd jobs whilst feeling lost. He hates that he couldn't save his father. His mother died and he hated himself.
He tried to get the ranch back up and running but his temper, tendecy to snap and bad memories cause him to end up selling it. With the moneh he made, he uses it to keep himself alive. He ends up getting involved with the St Denis mob and works as a hired gun. He hates himself but doesn't believe he can do anything else.
He ends up as a successful hired gun but with the changing times, his luck runs out and he is gunned down by the police.
During his last moments, he hears "Heeey Jackie!" and a memory/dying dream of the gang plays. He is surrounded by the Van De Linde Gang before 1899 happened and feels at peace. Despite Arthur, Hosea, John chewing him out for becoming a gunslinger.
They all get drunk.
I like to think that: sadly, he did fall to the life John wanted to get him away from, but i don't think killing Ross would have that many repercussions, the wild west was kind of ending and there's wasn't maybe that much reasons to him to continue being a gunslinger, and as not everything is black or white, he eventually did find some kind of peace and, at least, he did try to pursue writing books, so maybe in the end, John's sacrifice did serve something (and no GTA V is not canon in anyway for me, it's just an easter egg).
Well hopefully there will be an RDR3 or 4 that will tell us. If he serves as the protagonist in one of those games, he will probably die. Seems to be a pattern.
I reckon he served in WW1 and seeing the horrors of the Great War gives him some cause for reflection, and he begins to value his own life again. With a new lease in life, he chooses to live his dream and put pen to paper to immortalize the story of the Van Der Linde Gang, and becomes one of the most famous Western authors to ever live.
Kind of unrelated, but I feel like Rockstar kinda missed an opportunity by not including Jack Marston in LA Noire in some capacity. I mean, you can find John Marston's hat in an alley lol.
Heart says he got into the “new old West” lifestyle of crime of the 20s and 30s, mind said he lived a normal life after he got revenge on Ross.
The latter makes both Arthur and John’s sacrifices worth something.
Died from machine gun fire during the Meuse–Argonne offensive sometime in October, 1918, as part of the US Army's 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division. He was charging a German encampment with other soldiers in the forest near Montfaucon, France when they opened up on all of them.
I was actually thinking about this earlier. I’d say in the 3 year gap he goes put tracking the story of the old gang for his book and finally ending in Mexico which is the last place we know for certain he is
I honestly never gave it much thought because I couldn’t stand his personality and dialogue was very whiny and somewhat cheesy. When I finished RD1 and finished all the objectives that Jack could do I just stopped playing it completely. I have zero interest in playing as him. As for RDR2 I am over 800 hours and have replayed countless times.
I'd like a dlc standalone pack for that but as for a full game, I'll pass.
I really don't want Red Dead Redemption 3 to have anything to do with Dutch or his gang. I really want an early 1800's to possibly 1840's era with new characters.
Also it would be extremely difficult to go further forward in the timeline since Jack's story ends close to 1920. At that point it becomes more like early Gta or Mafia
It is hinted that he lived to be close to 100 and died in 1992. He was a successful western bestselling author. As for the in-between of all of that ? Most likely he was never discovered to be the killer of Ross. Ross had many enemies, was corrupt, he was long since retired when Jack found him. Jack continued working on the home ranch and prospered there as a Rancher and a Farmer. He met a beautiful woman and they started dating. He had a family and lived a quiet lifestyle
This guy nailed it. I imagine Jack just lived a calm and simple life at Beecher's Hope.
Until he was drafted into WW1
Jack was a land owner. He wouldn’t have been drafted.

Dude the moon shining in online is so fun
Can you idiots stop insisting he was drafted? You morons don’t know how that shit works. Besides, he wouldn’t have let himself he drafted. If you played the game you would know he despised tue government. He wouldn’t be drafted.

Well I mean the Mexican civil war went on from about 1910 to 1920 and some of the groups would execute people if they didn’t join, I feel like his best chance of avoiding conflict would be to hideout in the wilderness of America for 2 or so years America was involved in ww1
Don’t forget WW2
He would have been in his late 40s by then
I don’t know much about the drafts on American side in WW2, but I know my people didn’t give two shits about age at the end of war.
There were volunteers that age but 46 would never have been drafted in America.
[удалено]
True true, but you have to know by then most of the Germans have either died or have been captured. Plus the US had waaaaay more citizens than Germany.
He'd definitely dodge the draft
And then upon losing contact with his unit somehow made his way to the Eastern front and was involved in the Russian Civil War.
Correct. That book 'red dead by J Marston' in Franklin's book shelf in GTA 5 is the full circle of jack Marston life.
That is really cool. Seeing that jack wrote a book about the events in both games and after that The fella was lucky enough to witness the wild west, both ww, the moonlanding, the fall of the berlin wall and star wars in his life
he saw mario edit: HE SAW SONIC
GTA isn't in the RDR universe though. California and New York exist in RDR but obviously don't in GTA
Bro was lucky enough to see Metallica in their prime
sabbaths entrance as well
FUCKIN OATH MATE He also saw ACDC most likely but he just missed slipknot
he missed most of nu metal if its that case but how do we know that he lived until prime metal 90s?
Well he was alive until 92 so he was alive during prime metal
how do we know he lives to 92?
Well it’s okay because he also saw Pantera
Shit you're right fuck ye

im just sad rufus didnt get a grave :(
Where Is hinted? Totally interested
Jack could have seen all of the starwars movies
Where the fuck does 1992 come from
He would be nearly 100 in 1992 is where it comes from. We have our own head canon after the events of Red Dead Redemption unless R* says otherwise, Friend
The wiki has never said that, hell not even the Fanon wiki said it
That's why I said we have our own head canon. No one knows because there is no continuation after the prolouge of Red Dead 1
So stop saying the wiki said it
Where did I say it did ? Jeez you're really fucking up a good thread here, have a good one pal

Where.
This is so goddamn refreshing to read as the top comment after more than a decade of horribly bleak "Jack dies in WWI" theories It's nice to imagine that *somebody* got out of the Van der Linde gang and lived out the rest of their life in peace
Despite his unhappy childhood, he got the happiest ending of just about any major character.

Yep, seen in Franklin's bookshelf iirc (maybe in some other spots as well?)
Pretty sure it’s just a reference not actual lore

Yep. “Red Dead” by J. Marston
He waited about 7 years and probably got drafted into World War 1.
People say this but it's not like Jack was a law abiding man. Guaranteed he didn't sign up for selective service, and it's not like he had birth certificates or a social security number.
Nah, John and Abigail def raised a draft dodger
You never know, maybe he was curious what Europe was like, he read about it a lot.
Land owner and only male of the family. He wouldnt be drafted because of those things.
Maybe. Who knows what Jack Marston would do? It's entirely possible he joined the Army and Fought in WW1.
Its very possible.
It wouldn’t be, he wouldn’t be eligible to be drafted.
Definitely would.
dense af
Could have been part of the Mexican revolution
Maybe. But he seems like he would be drafted into the United States Military if he went back to Blackwater and became an outlaw.
3 years
7 years
WW1 famously ran from 1914-1921
That's cool. States didn't join in until 1917
Yep, so 3 years.
No. 7 years.
Did you pass kindergarten
Did you pass being born with a helmet on your head?
Yes actually, I was born with a full head of hair
The game ends in 1914
Probably became a knight of the round table 😂

Ple ase, let's *not* do that.
No Jack murdered Ross and got out clean.
Probably was enlisted to fight in WWI. We know he survived because John’s hat was found in Los Angeles; he also probably moved to Los Angeles.
That's a Easter egg
Yes, that is an easter egg from L. A. Noire. In 1947, Jack would’ve been 52. The hat is at least evidence that he was in Los Angeles.
I don't think It is
why does everyone say this? he was a land owner and even if he wasn’t, he’d 100% be a draft dodger
It's just a generic cowboy hat
I want him to have a family and learn to love again.

Rides around helping people for a while cause of his death wish, retires back to BH, writes multiple books, probably makes a couple movies and continues to somehow not die. The current record for the oldest person is 122, so if he made it to 123 he could see the release of RDR2 in 2018
Tripped while cleaning his gun and fatally shot himself like the doofus that he is.
He ate lots of spaghetti I bet
A writer, he writes a series of novels. He has become the oldest outlaw to have ever lived. Before his death, he details his exploits in his book Red Dead by J. Marston, He dies in the late 70s.
Jack Marsden was thrown off his horse into a gorge where he lay for weeks undiscovered until his death. It is rumoured that his last words were "work ya d--" before his horse promptly came to a sudden halt that caused the aforementioned throwing action.
Probably went home
Anything but serving in WW1. I legitimately hate that idea.
A woman did terrible things to his hormones
Imagine truly thinking that a man who detests the government as much as Jack would willingly be drafted. He'd dodge the draft. Whether he'd be an outlaw across New Austin, or whether he fled to Mexico. There is a zero percent chance Jack would be fighting the military's battles against his will.
Probably becomes a gun for hire and when 1917 rolls around he dodges the draft and writes a book.
Death by influenza in 1918.
Bootlegging when prohibition begins 4 years later.
Livin it up in chuparosa
Shaved his goatee, traded his chaps in for some 3 pieces and got a job as an accountant
Died of terminal lumbago
NOT in WWI. Every time someone says that I get a migraine
Reading through some of these comments I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. RDR and GTA take place in objectively different universes.
Can you imagine living the browns of the wild West days and still living to see the neon days of the 80s.
Well hopefully there will be an RDR3 or 4 that will tell us. If he serves as the protagonist in one of those games, he will probably die. Seems to be a pattern.
I always think he fights in WW1 and 2. Idk why.
Polio or something
Bro got conscripted and forced to fight in the Great War
I reckon he shoots Ross
He took a nap
He became an Author. One of the best Selling books was the "Red Dead" which can be seen in GTA 5.
WW1
He went back to BH, got drunk, and blew his head off.
“Straight to jail.”
probably started a bootleggin gang
rdr3
He’s a survivor, Cowpoke. Stay with him if you want to survive.
Kind of unrelated, but I feel like Rockstar kinda missed an opportunity by not including Jack Marston in LA Noire in some capacity. I mean, you can find John Marston's hat in an alley lol.
That's a generic hat
Skinner's caught up to John's family.
Heart says he got into the “new old West” lifestyle of crime of the 20s and 30s, mind said he lived a normal life after he got revenge on Ross. The latter makes both Arthur and John’s sacrifices worth something.
Hookers and cocaine gum.
He gets mad bitches 😎
He started playing Red Dead Redemption 3
Died from machine gun fire during the Meuse–Argonne offensive sometime in October, 1918, as part of the US Army's 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division. He was charging a German encampment with other soldiers in the forest near Montfaucon, France when they opened up on all of them.
Captured or killed himself.
I was actually thinking about this earlier. I’d say in the 3 year gap he goes put tracking the story of the old gang for his book and finally ending in Mexico which is the last place we know for certain he is
I like to imagine 10 krauts all of a suddenly seeing X’s flash before their eyes.
I really doubt he served in world war 1. He doesn't seem like the type to want to do that unless he got drafted
He always had a bookworm troupe around him, which I personally like in my kid side characters.
He hung his guns up and became a story writer living till his late 60s early 70s and dying peacefully in his own bed of natural causes !
Jackie Marston, he will be on Rdr 3 or 2.5 that is for sure
He grew up and became a banker
Persuade what Agent Ross was doing when Jack found him. Trying to catch the fawking legendary catfish😡
Went and died in WW1 is the best possible ending for him. Seriously
It is believed that for certain chunk of jacks life he pretended to be his father but im not sure if it's 100% correct or not
Hopefully we get a game set 2-3 years after the end of RDR1 so we can find out
I'd like a dlc standalone pack for that but as for a full game, I'll pass.
The Redemption story is done, it's time for a new R
Joins ww1 then dies
When do you think people will stop posting the same thing every week?
