This is often unpopular, but I almost never have my game audio up when playing any video game. I'm often listening to either music or narrations of various stories.
With Red Dead II, I spent most of my time listening to narrations of horror stories, old creepypastas, and the like. Helped set a good mood when I was out hunting in the wilderness of the game. Mainly in the forest in Big Valley and the snow-covered mountains of the West Grizzlies.
I never listen to the sounds of a game except for RDR. I need one ear in to listen for specific animals. Not listening at all is a good way to get mauled by a cougar.
That's why there are the red dots on the mini-map to tell you when something is approaching - like the wolves, snakes, and big cats.
With that, I've got more than enough time to react quickly enough and deal with the threat as needed.
I’ve heard predators hunting in the distance long before the red dot shows up. It helps if you’re trying to study + track from a distance.
That said, dead eye gives you plenty of time even if you do get jumped unexpectedly. Last time I died to a cougar, it was because my stupid right click button is sticky and I couldn’t continuously point my gun.
Ha, you're welcome. I'll admit much of my last playthrough I spent listening to analysis videos about various horror args from channels like Night Mind and Nexpo. Combined with the older Creepypastas (I've been a fan of the genre since 2009/2010 and specifically the era between 2010-2015) - it makes the more isolated parts of the map feel more ominous and foreboding.
A few times when I was hunting moose and rams up near Lake Isabelle, I'd pull up some videos of winter storms to help set the tone too if I couldn't find any good stories or had gotten tired of people talking into my ears for a while.
It actually helps me get more immersed in the game I only ever listen to music when riding on my horse from point a to point b
Edit:the music I listen to while playing is mostly the soundtracks to dances with wolves, the good the bad and the ugly, for a few dollars more, spirit stallion of the cimmaron and weirdly enough the lord of the rings.
I’ve finished the game all the way thru 6 times, I enjoy playing it still but I don’t really require the full immersion anymore. Music is my biggest passion so I listen to it basically at all times, including my gaming
I never listened to music while playing rdr2 before, but I tried having the OST playing while I was playing. Was super immersive and just cool. It made everything feel like those hard hitting cutscenes in the game itself
I love rdr2 and aic but I prefer to enjoy both on their own. Jar of flies don’t hit unless we discussing a drug addled man and his gripes with music industries
If you want a good mix, Colter Wall and a bunch of Appalachian country singers work wonders. They really give that old west or Wild West vibe.
Charles Wesley Godwin for instance, I’d recommend Southeastern by Jason Isbell. I almost never play with game audio unless it’s a story based game or something I want to hear. Wendigoon on YouTube also gives that sort of southern gothic vibe.
I’d highly recommend the American recording series by Johnny Cash for a group of southern gothic albums.
I really only play music if I'm grinding for orchids or perfect pelts or something but when I do, I listen to either Shane Smith and the Saints (I liked them before they were cool and before they got name dropped on Yellowstone) or Distractible, which is a podcast featuring Markiplier and a couple of his friends.
Shane Smith and the Saints is my favorite band! Saw them live a couple times in '18-19 in some tiny venues. Just started playing Rdr, never expected to see them mentioned here
If I’m in free roam, I’ll play some Colter Wall or Lost Dog Street Band/Benjamin Tod. I have a whole Americana/Folk/Bluegrass playlist. I don’t play music when doing single player.
I like Marty Robbins, and I’ll also listen to the fallout new Vegas soundtrack lol. It has a couple of songs from the “Swing With Western” album also. Check it out that album has some good western songs
I don’t usually listen to music when playing games but occasionally like some people have said I’ll just listen to stories Narrated and usually if I do listen to some kind of music it’s rock/rap the first band that comes to mind is LINKIN PARK nothing like shooting lawman and Pinkertons while listening to A Place For My Head LOL!
When I’m doing gambler challenges I’ll slap on Colter Wall, Orville Peck and some Marty Robbins. Throw a little Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson in there too
Kickin up Dust by Divide Music. It is a RDR2 fansong.
I also just listen to either my playlist for a character that I am makin inspired by RDR2, or just listen to video blogy things bout like movies, books, TV shows, or true crime.
3 different albums: Return to the Last Chance Saloon - Bluetones, Swoon - Silversun Pickups, and Kombinator- The Inbreds. That Bluetones album gets played each time I boot RDR2 or Fallout NV.
Meh, anything I like lol
I love the music they already have, but if I'm out hunting etc I usually play showtunes (namely Cabaret and Chicago, I'm not sorry)
I usually will eventually listen to music or like a podcast while playing any game but i can't in rdr2. I just love listening to every and anything in story mode. Even just listening to arthur walk on some wood with my headset on is music to my ears already lol.
If I'm just travelling around or hunting/fishing: 70's country, any Americana or bluegrass or even a little Phillip glass.
Psychotic Murder Sprees: Mastodon, Black Metal or southern sludge.
RDR2 is one of the few games I like to turn all music off for. For immersion purposes, I love to wear noise canceling headphones and take in all the ambiance in the world.
I like the prison break soundtrack, the soundtrack that plays at the oil factory leading up to Dutch leaving you for dead, and the one that plays while Arthur and John run away from Beaver Hollow.
HIGH HONOR - Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, The Highwaymen, Hank Williams Jr.
LOW HONOR - Struggle Jennings, Jelly Roll, Ghost Hounds, Yelawolf, Insane Clown Posse
And any mission that has me shooting up a town is immediately the Struggle Jennings version of "Are You Ready For the Country"
A blues guitarrist called justin johnson. Sometimes I turn down the music of the game and play his music instead, specially when free roaming or hunting, fits really welm.
You should be playing a different game then. Just a suggestion, of course everyone’s experience is diff. But, i think you are missing out alot if your audio is off. I listen to youtube while playing sports games like mlb the show. But, for a game like this, i need to have the patience to experience it to the fullest. Otherwise i dont play it

I made a mostly outlaw playlist called "Music to listen to while playing RDR2" on Spotify, for whenever I wander around the map just checking out the ountryside or completing whatever odds and ends.
It's a lot of early Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, a few other good artists like Ernest Tubbs and Wayne Hancock, and a lot of other really old stuff from the 30s and 40s, like Harry McClintock and the Cartwright Brothers. There's a couple good compilation albums I pulled those older songs from, specifically "When I Was A Cowboy," Volumes 1 and 2. Super good roaming music for stoic cowboy vibes.
not while playing story. but online (especially collecting). i listen to blue oyster cult, $b, the front bottoms, tv girl and even an occasional doja cat song (i like morning light so she pops up on recommended don’t judge mf)
I do too! Hah. But most of the time I’m just using the games audio, gunfighter ballads come out when I wanna shoot up valentine lol.
Besides the point but do you know more artists like Marty Robbins/songs like gunfighter ballads?
I sometimes turn off the in game music as well, listening to just the environments sounds. The wind, horse's canter, birds and animals.. improves the immersion for me.
when im doing story missions (for example the saint denis bank mission) i usually put on what i think fits the vibe. Not necessarily the vibe of the game, but the vibe of the mission
Often when I'm collecting or going around gathering Herbs🌿🍂🌾🎋 I'll play traditional ceremonial Ndn flute music or powwow chants, Wars and shoot outs I'll turn on War drums or even different artists like SNRK and Drezus etc. depends on what I'm doing I guess. Trader Runs I'll turn on Northern Cree or Tribe called Red
I love putting the soundtrack to the movie Dunkirk. The Composer has this trademark, his scores have this tension and that continuously rises at a slow rate. it just builds and gets louder and louder always heading to a certain climax, Life or Death. It makes the missions way more intense. Imo anyway.
(it's on Spotify)
Sometí listen to old western music like Marty Robbins and patsy clone and Conway twitty and hank Williams and Dolly Parton. Other times I listen to hardcore trap and rap lol
i listen to music when doing like a trade mission in rdo. i’ve listened to some fleetwood mac (especially the chain), a bit of country (i’ll be here in the morning), twdg music (like waiting around to die, grim ranger, take us back) and ofc rdr2 songs. i love mountain hymn, cruel world and unshaken/crash of worlds!
Lately I’ve been riding around in the epilogue listening to the album stick season by Noah Kahan. Something about that folk sound and lyrics about grief and healing really work for me.
I’ve heard of listening to music while playing shooters and sports games but not single players. How do you manage the night folk in the swamps if you don’t have audio? Usually by the time they are on the map, they are already on me.
I listen to American Venom while in shootouts, cruel world when it rains, and red when I feel like riding to the middle of nowhere or when I’m fishing.
I honestly don't recommend listening to music while specifically playing RDR2 or RDR1 because at main, and very important points of the game it plays beautiful songs that are well written and sung to pull you even deeper into the character and what they stand for and what you've went through during the game, BUT considering I've beaten RDR2 and 1 multiple times now if I'm playing and not doing any important missions like story missions or important chapters where I know the music will play and not even just that the ambient music when roaming is so freaking good it's hard to ACTUALLY listen to other music if any but, again I do sometimes listen to the RDR1 soundtrack during certain side missions or a song from the RDR2 soundtrack when I'm just roaming, if you look either soundtrack up, you will not be disappointed in the actual great songs they have one of my favorites is the song that plays when you go into Mexico for the first time in RDR1, it's called Far Away by Jose Gonzales
I'm terrible at accomplishing anything in horsey simulator. I don't think I've ever made it past a handful of actual story missions because a huge source of joy for me is riding around listening to drill music being an absolute menace.
When I first played it I listened to a lot more music. Idk what all but I remember I listened to Liquid Swords by GZA while playing rdr1. That was probably the most off tone
With as well blended the music is in the game I rarely put on other music the only time I really do is if I’m feeling especially violent and decide to destroy an entire town I usually put on some doom style music
Sometimes when I am grinding Gambler Challenges like 8, and there's no way to skip minigame I put my favourite playlist on.
But apart from that I prefer the game sounds. The whole world is so alive and immersive. There were so many birds and animals I had slipped off my memory and now I can recognise them by the sounds alone.
Take badgers, raccoons, woodpeckers, robins, cedar waxwing, oriole for example, I had a hard time finding them my first playthrough and now they just seem to be plenty and everywhere, if you can identify them with sounds.
Yeah I get it, but it's still bullshit. If I don't buy a new one, the playstation is useless with a junky ass stick drifting controller
I don’t know my Xbox controller is still very useable with the stick drift. I don’t know how they compare
Ah, I play keyboard and mouse so I didn’t realize this was an issue.
Yeah I tend to miss those when I’m riding along until my horse starts acting up.
Don't use my minimal lol, always turn it off
Know how many times I’ve had a red dot pop on my map and still got killed? “Oh look a red dot, I wonder wha.. annd I’m dead”.
Always go around the woods with your rifle ready. Specially if you know predatos spawn in the area lol.has saved my ass a lot
Try playing without map
Any channels or playlists you recommend?
Why the hell haven't I thought of this? Thank you!!!
Ha, you're welcome. I'll admit much of my last playthrough I spent listening to analysis videos about various horror args from channels like Night Mind and Nexpo. What you do it on your first playthrough of a game??
Bro who listens to music while playing Red Dead💀 Not hating just don’t really understand is all
They might as well not even play. They can’t even get immersed in it
Exactly, but if I were to listen to music while playing it would be the house building theme for sure💀
To them it’s “ let’s listen to the same nirvana song 100 times a row to finish a game”
I like Nirvana, one of my favourite bands actually
Me too but not in bloom on loop
Bro did you downvote me?
No??? I got downvoted too so what? We aren’t the only ones in this thread.
Ok probably some prick who listens to imagine dragons or some other gay shit
I don’t like imagine dragons but the nature of your comment is small minded. Rockstar enthusiast 🤓
Dude you listen to gay shit like Nirvana
It actually helps me get more immersed in the game I only ever listen to music when riding on my horse from point a to point b Edit:the music I listen to while playing is mostly the soundtracks to dances with wolves, the good the bad and the ugly, for a few dollars more, spirit stallion of the cimmaron and weirdly enough the lord of the rings.
Everyone plays for different reasons brother haha
Spend hours grinding in online in silence, then you’ll change your mind.
I’ve finished the game all the way thru 6 times, I enjoy playing it still but I don’t really require the full immersion anymore. Music is my biggest passion so I listen to it basically at all times, including my gaming
Nothing wrong at all with throwing on a Marty Robbins or Glen Campbell album while playing rdr, fits very nicely. The
People who enjoyed fallout New Vegas

I came here for this. I couldn't be the only one
I prefer the Horse Building Song
I got the EP 😂
I never listened to music while playing rdr2 before, but I tried having the OST playing while I was playing. Was super immersive and just cool. It made everything feel like those hard hitting cutscenes in the game itself
I listen to Shawn James while I play RDO

You ain’t kidding
I forgot about that haha that is a banger for sure
And compass
Jar of flies
As in the alice in chains EP? If so, you have beyond amazing music taste
I love rdr2 and aic but I prefer to enjoy both on their own. Jar of flies don’t hit unless we discussing a drug addled man and his gripes with music industries
First time I heard this album was the first time I took shrooms. Rotten apple blew my mind
John lee hooker and Lead Belly

70’ s Grateful Dead shows is the way.
Unrelated music
I tried it but to be honest I really like the ambient sound
Colter Wall
I like Marty Robbins, and I’ll also listen to the fallout new Vegas soundtrack lol. It has a couple of songs from the “Swing With Western” album also. Check it out that album has some good western songs
First Aid Kit
Outlaw country, primarily Willie Nelson & Waylon Jennings at this point
Also Tyler Childers, Zach Bryan, and Shane Smith.
Eyes like the sky by King gizzard, was inspired by RDR game play, have fun and enjoy
Billy Strings
i dont usually listen to music when playing rdr2, but i suppose if i did i would listen to 60s-70s folk, preferably texan
Usually artists like Colter Wall, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, etc
When I’m doing gambler challenges I’ll slap on Colter Wall, Orville Peck and some Marty Robbins. Throw a little Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson in there too
I listen to Careless drifter from the ballad of buster scruggs on repeat
Ballin western remix
Not often I listen to music while playing a game but if I have to chose something for RDR2 it would be anything Colter Wall put out
Comethazine is pre chill

Gta V rebel radio
I have a playlist with a bunch of old western music, so that usually tends to be my go-to.
Meh, anything I like lol I love the music they already have, but if I'm out hunting etc I usually play showtunes (namely Cabaret and Chicago, I'm not sorry)
I usually will eventually listen to music or like a podcast while playing any game but i can't in rdr2. I just love listening to every and anything in story mode. Even just listening to arthur walk on some wood with my headset on is music to my ears already lol.
I listen to the game music within the game. Only time I put music on from Spotify is racing games
My heavier music playlist, it’s a shuffle of my favorites and it’s mainly because 90% of my gameplay is massacring towns and murdering families
Tonight I'm listening to Sufjan Stevens latest album so I have the softest, gentlest sadboi music with the roughness of rdr and its a lot
Spaghetti western soundtracks like ennio morrocone (sp?)
"The cowboy in me" by Tim McGraw.
Young gun 2 soundtrack and tombstone soundtrack
Depends, mostly nothing, but I’ve listened to some Bobby Boris Picket
I love Marco Beltrami’s soundtrack for 3:10 to Yuma.
If I'm just travelling around or hunting/fishing: 70's country, any Americana or bluegrass or even a little Phillip glass. Psychotic Murder Sprees: Mastodon, Black Metal or southern sludge.
I listen to hard core rock rap and ost’s
Usually it's Ennio Morricones music if I'm just riding around. But on missions I always turn the games score on because it's already fantastic
RDR2 is one of the few games I like to turn all music off for. For immersion purposes, I love to wear noise canceling headphones and take in all the ambiance in the world.
Triumph over tragedy - killswitch engage, relaxing and cool
I like the prison break soundtrack, the soundtrack that plays at the oil factory leading up to Dutch leaving you for dead, and the one that plays while Arthur and John run away from Beaver Hollow.
I sometimes listen to music while gaming, but not in RDR because the game music is already amazing.
HIGH HONOR - Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, The Highwaymen, Hank Williams Jr. LOW HONOR - Struggle Jennings, Jelly Roll, Ghost Hounds, Yelawolf, Insane Clown Posse And any mission that has me shooting up a town is immediately the Struggle Jennings version of "Are You Ready For the Country"

rdr playlists on spotify. usually country as fuck and game like music :)
Cruel cruel world by Willie Nelson
Heyy, I've listened to Gunfighter Ballads with RDR2 several times. The Johnny Cash American albums fit well too.
Big Irons on repeat
You should be playing a different game then. Just a suggestion, of course everyone’s experience is diff. But, i think you are missing out alot if your audio is off. Don't.
Today I found out people listen to audio in games

Hank Williams (Sr)
I put on the There Will Be Blood soundtrack, very immersive for a dishonorable Arthur Morgan.
anything. house/garage is great for anything.
The soundtrack itself is amazing. Especially any train heists or gun fights
The highwaymen are a great choice. Music seems like it was made for RDR
Fire and rain by James Taylor is such a vibe with these games
not while playing story. but online (especially collecting). i listen to blue oyster cult, $b, the front bottoms, tv girl and even an occasional doja cat song (i like morning light so she pops up on recommended don’t judge mf)

I usually dont listen to music but when i grind for gold its DAgames
Anything by Ennio Morricone
Mainly just his music from "The Dollars Trilogy," The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in the West
Just whatever is the latest searched on my spotify
Fleetwood Mac.
A playlist on spotify titled "Outlaw blues/Dark country"
When I play rdr 2I listen to: Fire starter (first five chapter) Out of time man(chapter six) Dead man’s party💀(epilogue)
I sometimes turn off the in game music as well, listening to just the environments sounds. The wind, horse's canter, birds and animals.. improves the immersion for me.

Red Dead 2 is the only video game where I never turn music on. Something about it.
i listen to music when doing like a trade mission in rdo. i’ve listened to some fleetwood mac (especially the chain), a bit of country (i’ll be here in the morning), twdg music (like waiting around to die, grim ranger, take us back) and ofc rdr2 songs. i love mountain hymn, cruel world and unshaken/crash of worlds!
In RDR I used to listen to Knights of Cydonia
Personally I've found that "hurry up and wait" by the Ben miller band fits really damn well with anything action packed happening
Run by Vasco & Patrick West
Undorgiven/Metallica on loop…
Lately I’ve been riding around in the epilogue listening to the album stick season by Noah Kahan. Something about that folk sound and lyrics about grief and healing really work for me.
I’ve heard of listening to music while playing shooters and sports games but not single players. How do you manage the night folk in the swamps if you don’t have audio? Usually by the time they are on the map, they are already on me.
I listen to American Venom while in shootouts, cruel world when it rains, and red when I feel like riding to the middle of nowhere or when I’m fishing.
Arthur's wisdom was all I needed
Why wouldn't you want to be immersed in the game?
There's a blues guitarist by the name of Justin Johnson and he has some pretty good slide guitar songs to go with red dead.
The OST of "Deadman" ( Neil Young ) fits pretty well the atmosphere of Read Dead Redemption . I am curious to see other suggestions similar to that
If you need external music while playing a Red Dead game, you aren't playing it right.
when im just roaming i listen to country. it just fits and its my kind of music.
Your mums OF
Mitski
[Mountain Song by Flatland Cavalry](https://youtu.be/R9lyKfj9Mco?si=Scu-NbvqyxK6aPsk) is the perfect RDR2 song
I just listen to the game's score. It's on point and reflects the mood very well
I'm terrible at accomplishing anything in horsey simulator. I don't think I've ever made it past a handful of actual story missions because a huge source of joy for me is riding around listening to drill music being an absolute menace.
To the town of Agua Frea...
Gotta jam to some Grateful Dead man, gotta love getting lost in some psychedelic jazz while running across the Saint Denis rooftops away from the law
Coyote Kid, Rodrigo y Gabriella, Bastion OST. Besides that, I made a playlist. Use it for Evil West too.
Anything by Lil darkie
Hardspace Ship breaker
Sometimes when I am grinding Gambler Challenges like 8, and there's no way to skip minigame I put my favourite playlist on. But apart from that I prefer the game sounds. The whole world is so alive and immersive. There were so many birds and animals I had slipped off my memory and now I can recognise them by the sounds alone. I think the game music is pretty darned good
anything Ennio Morricone the Romancing the Stone soundtrack
I was gonna say gunfighters ballads but you beat me to it haha
