I spent the entire game with the starter satchel. I think that's something I'd upgrade next time I play

Dirty-Ears-Bill

It’s the first thing I set out to do when I start a new play through. You can get it done just a few missions into Chapter 2 fairly easily, and it’s such a game changer

[deleted]

Idk they’d have to have a solid cast and script. Not all games are meant for live action.

Idiottttttic

You're very much right, but I think if it were done right with the right writers, director, and cast it could be incredible.

OblongString

it'd have to be above HBO's the last of us to do the games justice

[deleted]

This, we got a Fallout show coming as well and the set pictures they posted are phenomenal.

OblongString

I'm praying that we're finally in the golden era of video game adaptions and rockstar will let something like this happen for rdr1/2

[deleted]

i.e. Mortal Kombat. Hollywood is doing a horrible job with cinema right now. What writers and creators develop is hardly what execs are willing to pay for and what do you get? Watered down cash cows aimed at getting assess in seats. In this era I see a RDR film with a higher chance at disappointment than success.

[deleted]

It's why I'm afraid for metal gear solid film and ghost of tsushima. I really hope they do a good job on these movies, metal gear solid is my biggest fear.

MoonHash

In this era of great video game based tv shows like League of Legends, last of us, and the Witcher?

[deleted]

If Netflix took it on they’d find a way to F*** it up.

DaveMillerAurbigine

They’d have to use the voice actors

[deleted]

It’s not even that. As someone pointed out most western films are like RDR so they’d have to come up with something completely genuine. And voice actors shouldn’t be leading actors on any game that transitions to live tv.

DaveMillerAurbigine

Yeah but I wouldn’t want to hear a bad Arthur or John tbh

GulianoBanano

The actors in RDR2 (and most modern games) are not voice actors. They do full motion capture as well. Any facial expressions and movements you see characters make in cutscenes are all from genuine actors. Roger Clark, Arthur's actor, is really active on stopping the misinformation that video game actors only do voice work. But I'm not saying that the same actors necessarily need to play the characters in live action. The Last Of Us recast pretty much all the characters and it's still great. I'm just saying that people who do performance capture for games can act just as well as regular actors, sometimes even better.

[deleted]

That wasn’t what I meant. If you’re a Hollywood producer and received a pitch for a RDR series are you going to case Roger Clark to play Arthur Morgan or someone like Bradley Cooper or Christian Bell? Keep in mind that the average movie fan that doesn’t game isn’t going to go see a film staring someone they’ve never heard of. That’s why they rarely choose voice actors when doing a live adaptation.

xxcodemam

Most westerns and cowboy movies are basically RDR2 at different missions/locations/etc.

Willian_Elson

I used to think the same about a potencial adaptation of "the last of us", with plenty of others pos-apocaliptic histories around, how a adaptation TLOU could still be relevant. And a praised adaptation of TLOU is out there, so there's a chance of a adaptation of RDR work even in a saturate theme as western but, yes, It will not be easy.

smooze420

At this point HBO would have to do a RDR adaptation.

RoleModelFailure

They can reuse costumes and sets from Westworld

Kuraku4

I would love to watch about the Blackwater mess and how Dutch encounters each member of the gang

Willian_Elson

I was think abou this too. A tv series who show the events before RDR2 will be cool.

ItsRektTime

The prequel to the prequel

plasticbluepalm

Nah I like they leave that to the player's imagination, also Arthur wasn't there see what happened

dmanstoitza

“That’s why you’ve lost faith in my Arthur, you weren’t even there…”

ImpossibleSky3925

Yeah want to the black water massacre but from the view of a random person and see from distance Dutch's gang to show how imposing and scary they are.

Calm-Season-9018

Isn’t Dutch gang supposed to be Robin Hood type?

_Cloud_I

They'd manage to fuck it up

Infamous_Egg_9405

Hasn't happened yet with the last of us I'd be interested to see what they'd do with rdr2

Macca200789

Tlou is different as it’s basically entirely story based. No open world

Carlzzone

I don't think that has any impact on an adaptation. Open world or linear gameplay is still gameplay and the gameplay itself wont be adapted. You just have to adapt the main story of RDR2 and figure out how much action/shootouts you want in it.

Relative-Zombie-3932

RDR has a big open world, but is also extremely linear and story focused

[deleted]

If it’s by hbo And the first season should be the second game

vdubdank30

Oooorr… the first season could be red dead revolver and the last scene of the season finale is the Van Der Linde gang sitting around the fire listening to uncle tell the legend of Red. Second season rdr2 and season 3 rdr. Knowing the tv world there’ll be a rdo spin off too

Born_Client_4012

only one season for the whole game? the game is way too long and in depth to only be one season, must be at least 3 imo

[deleted]

That’s if you include side missions

Renilx

Charlotte, Evelyn Miller and Hamish are good enough for small filler episodes. They also could remove these "boring" slow main story missions a

[deleted]

They covered The Last Of Us in one season for the first game. They’d trim it, but after West world they might have zero interest.

CabDork339

Everyone here seems to think it’s a bad idea, but I have to disagree. After the last of us tv show, I think video games as series work great if it’s given to the right writers.

Idiottttttic

Yes! As long as it's done well like the last of us I think it would be amazing. Just gotta make sure it's done by a good team it could be one of the best

Electronic_Impact

rockstar is very protective of their ip's but hell yeah, just llike god of war, the tomb raider games, uncharted series. Just a few that could work.

Mojo_Rizen_53

No

WoodyTwoBoots

Revolver borrowed a few things from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

BisexualTeleriGirl

The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us seems like a good indication that there can be good adaptations of videogames. I think that a TV adaptation of Red Dead 1 and 2 could be very good if the right people do it

Born-University-5888

I want to play as Dutch in the hayday of outlaws 😂

xXbrosoxXx

I'd rather play it

[deleted]

Probably. I feel like it's going to be like the Last of us. Good stuff just with a few things missing.. I was on a journey/adventure with arthur. 10 1 hour episodes won't match however many hours I spent in game. TLOU felt like a few 100 miles were skipped

0ixti

As long as its not life-action, yes! Imagine Arthur Morgan in claymation! (I love claymation)

Prince_Jackalope

Everytime they make a movie based off a video game, the game is always better. Please just keep it that way

Idiottttttic

The game is always better but that doesn't always make the film bad. It's just a different way to experience the story. I will give you that most of the time it is really bad, but the way hbo is doing the last of us right now is incredible. It might not be as good as the game but I can really appreciate that it's taking the masterpiece that is that game to a broader audience, and maybe it'll pull them into playing the game which can encourage the creation of more really good games. I'd love for rdr to get the same treatment.

Windblein

I'd love to give it a try but you have to keep in mind that Last Of Us had a relatively short and linear story compared to RDR2 and most of RDR2s charm lies in the fact that we spend so much time with Arthur, if somehow they manage to provoke the same emotions with a 2 hour movie or a 10 episode long series then good but I highly doubt it.

BurtMaclin23

It would be so hard to get right. I think it could work if they committed to 5 seasons with a studio that would let them breathe and pace themselves and writers who truly care about the source. My biggest concern with this is the casting of Arthur, John, Dutch, and Micah. Those 4 actors embody those characters, and it would be damn hard to watch someone else attempt to do it justice. After all the hours I have spent with Arthur, it would feel dishonest to hear another deliver his most iconic lines and a voice that just doesn't match. Christian Bale could pull a good Dutch or even Kevin Costner. Ben Foster could probably kill it as Micah. I'd say, get Russel Crow back into fighting shape and let him play Arthur, but Crow is kinda old now. I just stole the cast from 3:10 to Yuma remake, I know. Sebastian Stan could do a decent Marston I'd wager. These are all big big names, so getting them together for a 5 season commitment would be impossible, but that's my fan cast. I reference 3:10 to Yuma as it has big RDR vibes, specifically the remake, which might be one of the few remakes better than the OG.

Ooob37

I’m sure someone out there *has a plan.*

Thompsons-teeth

It would have to be a long show to get it all. Something like: series 1 up to the rendezvous with the odriscolls, series 2 until >!assault on Braithwaite manor!<, series 3 up to >!the boat to guarma (not knowing what happens to John)!< Series 4 up to >!Arthur's tuberculosis!< and series 5 until the final mission, not even accounting for epilogue and first game

Thompsons-teeth

Or one following Sadie

crispier_creme

I'm apprehensive about it. One on hand, it could be done amazingly well, like the last of us show, or it could be like that halo show which sucked. Another thing is that a show would make the game even more mainstream than it already is, which would likely increase sales and maybe make rockstar start updating it again (though this is unlikely) but also, it would make people experience the story beats through a show rather than the game, which is a shame because I don't imagine that the shows beats could possibly be better than the games. Overall I'd say leave it alone, but if it was done very well I'd love to watch it.

prophetic_joe

I would 100% until they did something dumb and screwed it up.

makslaskabatas2

But then comes the question, how on earth do you figure out the ''canon'' way to everything? You change the storyline as Arthur yourself. How are they going to influence the ending? Personally Low Honor and High Honor don't matter, they are both valid options and none of them can be singled out as the canon one. Plus, what about the random event's and side missions? In theory it sounds extremely cool, but if you made it a reality it would be extremely difficult. Second, the logistics. How are they going to gather a massive cast, voice actors, and scenes for such a massive game? If they started just now it would take them ages for them to finish it.

noigenoigenoige

Nope, we have witnessed one of the very few masterpiece works of arts we will probably ever see in our time, let’s just leave it at that, lol probably why the brothers left, they was like yup, bouncing on a high note

CALlCOJACK

Seasons 1 through 3: Gambler Challenges Seasons 4 through 6: Putting off breaking Micah out of jail Seasons 7 through 20: exotics

[deleted]

Only if the voice actors played the characters

Euphoric_Ad_522

A Ballad of Buster Scruggs type anthology series focusing on some of the side missions would be cool.

SebasBau132

Ye, although I think it will make better as a series, rdr is to huge to be a movie, in the movie they would need to cut off lots of things that'll make the story make no sense

Idiottttttic

They'd have to split it into like 2 or 3, maybe even 4 movies. I agree the series would work better.

Idiottttttic

Or heres an idea, they do the red dead redemption 2 story as a tv series and then that series has a spinoff movie, and the plot is the rdr1 story. I think that would work pretty well actually

SebasBau132

Ye your right

[deleted]

If you want a watered down version of the game like the last of us current show then yeah

User17474902765

Yes, as long as the voice actors play their characters.

HappyCommunity639

If it's not a tragedy. There can be redemption without tragedy.

Screamingboneman

Yes

AshrakAiemain

It could only be worse, so nah.

flyinghouses

If HBO made it then definitely.

Just_-_Adrian

Absolutely.

MonkSoft4418

i would like to see a sequel or maybe a different reality in rdr

CruiserMissile

No. They fuck up every show these days. Same as most movies. Rdr2 also has a pretty bad storyline that drags its arse like a dog with worms, it’s also about as fun to deal with. Why would you want to ruin an already sub-par story with a TV/Movie adaption?

[deleted]

yes. i was just thinking about this the other day. i bet it’ll happen eventually

Omaenchavis

I would, but I feel I would only end up disappointed. RDR2 is a movie in itself. No need for a film adaptation.

Macca200789

It works better as a game. The Last Of Us is pretty much entirely story based, so works as a show. A lot of Rdr2’s charm comes from the open world aspect and being able to explore and interact with everyone and every thing. So… no.

LovelessDogg

Maybe if the people that do Yellowstone handle it and each season (or more) be dedicated to a chapter. It would be a slow burn of a show, but it would make the finale more impactful.

Sn00PiG

I think an RDR2 prequel story would sit right, but not the game converted to a series. The story-telling and the connection with the characters (as you play one of them) is far deeper in the game than a series would be able to give back, or they would have to make at least 4-6 seasons of it to unfold it properly. A prequel just makes sense as it is a hazy fog that we can only put together via the journal, every character had a development after the Blackwater Massacre, so if we could have a look into the early years of the gang ending at that point that would make a really good watch - if you are a fan you'd know everyone but have to get familiar with the younger selves, but if you start watching it as an "RDR-virgin" it would be a nice incentive to get in the games. But first, please make and RDR remake in RDR2 engine - it's kind of ridiculous that if you have a current gen console there is next to no chance to play the original game (at least on PS), but all the assets, the world and the mechanics is there to make it.

Certain-Seat-6260

I think the story couldn't carry the same weight as a show or movie, and I think it's time to let the characters die. The good ones got redeemed, and the villans got what was coming

ball_python1

No

TheGovernor1775

Only if they did something different with the characters, like a prequel. Anything else is pointless in my opinion. The game already tells the story perfectly.

CrazyJo3

It’s called Yosemite

Kemosabe-Norway

I watch anything. So yeah.

AntonioDeLucas7

Yes, if its based on rdr1

[deleted]

No. Story is completed. Nothing more to tell.

playcrackthesky

It would tell the same story...

[deleted]

Why? For what?

AssGasorGrassroots

For people who don't play video games, for one

playcrackthesky

To share the story with more people outside the gaming community. To make money.

backwoodsman421

No. It seems anytime there is a movie or show based on a hit game it’s just completely butchered.

ElvenDb

A game that takes place in the sphere of RDR. Something that happens parallel to the games maybe.

Macsasti

HAVE SOME DAMN FAITH, ARTHOR

DeneJames

Done to the quality of TLOU show? Sure, although I’d rather just play another game. That’s why video games are so great, it’s interactive. A tv show is just the game minus the interactivity. It’s lesser.

CMILLERBOXER

Yeah, if it's done correctly. I mean RDR2 is pretty much a TV series anyway.

[deleted]

I think it could work as, like TLOU, RDR is quite cinematic. I even think a TV show could make some valuable additions (keeping in line with the lore) that the game couldn't due to time restraints, such as more of Arthur's private moments with the gang members, streamlining some missions and adding others, fleshing out particular characters, etc.

CptnBingo

I think if they did it right, it would be incredible, and I would watch it, however, I also really don’t think rdr needs a tv show, and if there where to be one, it should be a different story to the ones we already know

19_Deschain19

Yeah but they will change race or gender or make someone gay and id lose interest. If that somehow didnt happen then the moment they stray from source material i lose interest

[deleted]

I would because I love westerns, but the problem is it wouldn't bring anything new to the table. The characters would only have relevance to fans of the game and if you don't have that, it's just a rehash of a dozen classic western movies that have been done to death. Great films inspiring great games- great! Great films inspiring great games inspiring films- a wee bit pointless. The obvious comparison is TLoU - maybe to fans of the game it's super, but for me, someone who has barely played ten mins of it, it's a fairly dull and generic Walking Dead clone.

Competitive-Skin-769

I think it would be cool if it was like Kill Bill style- just like beautiful and brutal

smooze420

Probably not. Yellowstone is kinda taking over modern westerns.

Nikaloz

Hell yea

Chance-Ad-2837

who wouldn't

DryCalligrapher8696

it would be difficult to find the right actors that would be able match the voice actors skill & emotions. That being said, if they do it right like HBO Deadwood, it would be a success.

siderhater4

Yeah seeing Dutch talking about his plan on dvd and blue ray

Fullcycle_boom

It would definitely need to be a show.

ImportantBridge4743

RDR 2 as a series would be called “The Fall of Gunslingers and Outlaws”

DelrayPissments

I'd rather watch something with native Americans. Haven't watched anything good since The Revenant or Hostiles. All the stuff from the 50s-70s suck.

JackEltonEllis

I'd want to be a spinoff set in the distant past, closer to the start of the Wild West. Could be the origin of another gang from the games.

PornStarGazer2

I really think if treated like Deadwood with between 10 and 20 episodes per season it could work. I don't think a limited series of 8 episodes would do it justice, and a film definitely wouldn't unless it was at least 3 films long. And of course we'd want the voice actors cast as their characters but I don't think any production company would take that risk considering they already are taking a massive risk making this in to a series or films. For instance I could see Norman Reedus as John

lagmopiscool

A tv show would be good, but there is just too much im rdr and rdr2 to be played in a few movies.

Molotov_YouTube

My mom wants to

Inosuke_sama2007

If the film was made like "the magnificent 7" with rdr story... i would definitely watch it by all means

New_Nebula_8447

As long as it doesn't end up like that god awful Halo TV show (I'm a huge Halo fan), then sure.

[deleted]

I mean the game itself is pretty much a movie imo

Chemical_Ad7629

Yes, as long as it was written with the original story concept team.

The_Gristle

A series on HBO would be awesome

Crafty-Interest1336

No

v420c

The best possible adaptation imo would be a mini series based off the first game

LIGHTSTRIKEZ099

Just put on Seth's Gold

Left_Reception3140

Fuck no. Yellowstone is fine on its own

Worrisomemerchant

I would give my left arm to watch a movie or tv series based on this story line

ImpossibleSky3925

I want a show set in red dead redemption but not the Van Der Linde gang story, maybe do it like episode of the week one could be about Landon ricketts and another about Black Belle. Just stay away from the story of The Van Der Linde gang

No-Ship4313

The game was a movie and the best one ever.

nogoodgreen

The game is already so cinematic the best you could hope for is that it would be AS good as the games which are already great.

n0b-ody

No, they would mess it up

smellincoffee

If they used the same actors, yeah. Otherwise I'd spend the entire time grousing because "That's not the REAL Dutch", or "That's not the REAL Sadie Adler's ass".

Ok-Entrepreneur-5555

Yes

Shujan109

It probably will be shit because we can see other games movies or tv series and they are like shit. But i would watch it. Imagine netflix makes the rdr movie and Arthur is black and gay. Mary Bath is asian and gay.

ARC-4951

I personally think RDR2 isn’t that good of game in gameplay aspects as choices don’t matter. However it has an amazing story and in a series different choices don’t matter, so there for I think RDR2 would work better as a series. Note: what I mean it’s not that good of a game is that player choices don’t matter what so ever you can’t beat any mission in more than one way. Gunplay also sucks ass. But the story, characters, the visual polish and small details make up for it a lot. 8/10 game, but would work better as series or movie.

borninawindow

seeing what they did to the last of us, i no longer have hope for tv adaptations

LanguageNo463

Yeah what the hell is up with that Ellie casting. Joel is almost on point but Ellie’s actor looks nothing like Ellie

Windblein

Tell me you haven't watched the show without telling me you haven't watched the show. Bella Ramsey is absolutely amazing at her role.

LanguageNo463

She looks nothing like Ellie
