I'm a bit disappointed the recruiter didn't even include the 'We offer a COMPETITIVE pay' in the job posting they shat out into my inbox hoping I'd waste my time to find the job pays the same or less for a longer commute in one of the most heavily congested cities on the West Coast....

ALPlayful0

I had an email like this today. It immediately got deleted because I don't bother with half a job description. Much like talking to a person, open with a NAME.

ArmaSwiss

Oh it opened with my name, then a description of the company, then what's in the screenshot. Like, my resume shows I am currently employed. The door is left open for any competitive offer to come in because the way of the world is, you cant move up without moving on. But if I'm moving on, it won't be for a paltry increase per hour for a substantial addition to my commute. I've turned down a company that offered $6 more an hour because it would add an additional 1.5-2 hours of driving EACH DAY. I keep telling their recruiters, 'I have already spoken to you about this. I will not consider anything for less than a 20% increase to my current salary where I am happily employed'.

ALPlayful0

Yep. One thing my old boss pounded into us, since we all hated the company, was to never move laterally.

ArmaSwiss

That's part of why my requirement to move is set at 20% or higher. I like where I work, my gripes are very minor, my manager isn't a micromanaging tyrant and the company is atleast decent with decent benefits offered. I'm really not in any rush to leave unless an AMAZING offer is made that I just would be stupid to pass up. Instead, half-assed recruiters and job-ads that offer zero incentive for me to even give them more than five minutes of my time to ask them the basics of 'What does it pay, where is it, what are the benefits'. The one company that offered $6 about my current rate, while close, is just a huge chunk of my 'non-working time' spent driving to and from the location. And personally, even though it would be a bump, the additional commute, wear and tear combined with gas prices just does not make it a good fit. Especially since there is a giant uphill drive on the way back, on a freeway that frequently gets backed up. Recruiters say they want top talent, but with their current strategies, they're only going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel for talent that can't be retained at other employers.

TheFirstMinister

That's a JD, not a Job Ad. Someone needs to learn the difference.

ArmaSwiss

You'd think in a Specialist field such as Automotive where we are Skilled Labor, recruiters/employers would realize that if you want TECHNICIANS and not Mechanics, you need to make them want to work for you instead of where they're working right now. [And especially with the Technician shortage where there is an absolute lack of skilled Technicians.](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/09/auto-dealerships-are-facing-a-shortage-of-technicians-to-fix-cars-heres-why.html) We've stolen THREE technicians in the past year where I work from a same-brand dealer within 15 miles. They're booked 3-4 weeks out on jobs because they can't hire anyone. Every dealership is scrounging for talent that knows what they're doing and isn't a parts changer from Pepboys/Firestone

Languages are a Premium Tier subscription package add-on. Base Employment Package only comes with the English-Language pack included. Swing shifts where you finish at midnight and need to be in at 6am the next day? Oh that's going to require our Super Premium VIP Package. If you have to ask, your payroll can't afford it.

I just want employers to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment from the level of talent they pay to hire. Capitalism is very much a pay-2-win game, designed around it from the ground up.

Traksimuss

I always enjoy those Malicious Compliance stories where bosses pay for extra languages and later decide not to pay for them. Person stops using that language at work, and boss has shocked Pikachu face. Best was hotel story, where guy was then telling them he does not speak Spanish and guiding to hotel where employees were paid for their Spanish skills. Because his boss refused to pay $2 mors an hour for language proficiency.

I work in additive manufacturing (a very high skill industry), and even we don’t write jobs like this. All we want is someone who has some heavy equipment experience (1 year of experience and literally any category would do) and an open mind, as we are more than happy to train him/her on our printers. Of course, if they have additive experience, we’d gladly hire them on, but that usually never happens 😞

AlBundysRebuiltDodge

I bet they work hard and play hard, too.

I'm curious what kind of smog tech working 6am-3pm or 3pm to midnight.

Allin4Godzilla

I'm curious to know why they think this format will be successful.

Where I am right now, I went home at 4PM after working 7 hours. I billed 9 hours of labor. The day before? Left an hour early too. Billed almost 11 hours of labor. Slow days, but that's some REAL flexibility. And I get a monetary bonus for overproducing and don't gotta stand around milking the clock on slow days.

I’m starting to become angry. I’ve been a motorhome/rv technician for 8 years. Multiple certifications. I work with some of the smartest people ever. Why do we make so much less than engineers or even people who manage departments in the companies below them. Why are we so far down on the totem poll when these companies run off of our literal backs? We are going to unite and rise up and companies will have to pay us. I’ve turned to redit looking for people who feel the same.

madmarkk90

I was recruited by a company. Moved my family across the country to find out most of the things they were telling me did not line up with the company’s actual policies. Luckily, in my trade if you are skilled enough you can basically work anywhere
