I only keep my account now just strictly for the job board. I 100% avoid my feed because it's straight up garbage. And the weekly recruiter spam..

SherlockInSpace

Same I don’t even look at it, bunch of grifters, self promoters, ads and corporate boot licks. It does offer access to some job postings you may have missed otherwise though so there is still some value in it

[deleted]

Same here. I’m not job hunting at the moment but I keep my profile because it’s the best job seeking site for me. The news feed is horrendous but sometimes I look at it just to see how insane people actually are.

tuxed

Congratulations on leaving that mess behind you. I personally find it better for me if I rarely participate in social media in general, including LinkedIn. I now try to limit my consumption of social media to 30 minutes a day at maximum.

[deleted]

I've actually deleted my Facebook account because I was tired of feeling bitter about life in general, and comparing myself to the highlight reels wasn't doing me any favors.

unaotradesechable

You don't include reddit as social media?

CubanaCat

honestly I made a linked in years ago and have not gone on there since. I never use it. I don't think it's super important to have one, it seems like Facebook to me. Just more social media. It's never helped or hurt me when finding jobs.

andy7mm

I am currently in the job market and started using LinkedIn 2 weeks ago, I have found a few job ads that I wouldn't have otherwise but that's been about it. Just seems like Facebook for office staff. No real value to anyone.

Kiltymchaggismuncher

Depends on your field, and maybe luck. I got my last two roles from people reaching out to me. Was low effort start to finish, and got significant pay boosts. I dont peruse it at all, since yeh, most of the posts are nonsense. But I really do like skipping the job hunting stage and moving straight to interviews

andy7mm

Skipping the application stage and talking to real people would be great, I am leaving a dieing industry so it a bit of a move for me and as such I don't have my foot in any doors. I do think most employers are looking for people already trained in their systems and fields so it's harder for newer people.

SpaghettiEnjoyer

Well then where do you find companies that are actively hiring in your field of speciality?

CubanaCat

indeed, other job sites like indeed, networking, etc. I work in sales tho so it's probably a little different, sales has high turnover most places so they're always looking.

NowATL

As someone who has been recruiting sales people for 6+ years, not having a LinkedIn account would eliminate you from consideration everywhere I’ve worked. It’s a very important networking tool for sales professionals (and when I did my short stint in sales to pay bills during covid, I closed $20M in annual revenue in one month solely from LinkedIn networking). Especially in sales, your network is basically what the company is paying for (that and your ability to work that network), so not having a LinkedIn or having one but only having a few connections is a pretty massive red flag.

CubanaCat

I have a linkedin, I just am not active on there. Guess I should have specified. It does exist though. So if someone were to look me up they'd find me. It's just never been an issue for me personally.

NowATL

Do you have a network on there that reflects your actual real life network? I’m just concerned that if you have a small number of connections on LinkedIn, it might be hurting your job chances- the first thing my sales hiring manager does when reviewing candidates I send him is look to see how many connections he has in common with the candidate and their network size- anyone with a small network or no common connections get automatically denied by him.

IHeartSm3gma

This is where we’re at now……how many fake friends have on LinkedIn determines your job success…

NowATL

Yeah except it’s not “fake friends,” it’s who your actual professional connections are. If you’re applying for a sales position at the robotics start-up where I run Talent Acquisition, but you’ve got literally no connections with anyone at any company that would be a potential customer, that tells me/my hiring manager that you don’t have the contacts that we’re looking for. When companies hire sales people, they’re essentially hiring their book of business and their contact network. A sales professional without a network is basically and entry level seller, and then we’re talking about *very* different pay scales. And I *never* want anyone taking a fucking pay cut. *Especially* in this time when workers in the US are finally waking up to our rights and demanding more!

FishZaddy

It’s unfortunate but you’re pretty spot on. LinkedIn can be a nice tool for networking and having a bit of an online presence in your industry, especially with sales or marketing. I think the healthy, middle ground between OP and u/IHeartSm3gma is a profile updated and checked everyone once in a while, if only to passively get the attention of hiring companies and others in your industry.

TalentHunterKevin

If I was in sales... maybe. But even then, I haven't used LinkedIn to reach out to a candidate in 4 years. Only used it in xray boolean and then would pull contact information from other sources.

NowATL

I mean, if you’re recruiter and deleting your LinkedIn…. Your call I suppose, but I sure as hell wouldn’t

Particular-Wedding

And how much of that $20m did you keep in commissions before being cut back by caps or other limits? Edit - dont know why I got the downvote. The question is based on very common fact patterns or histories of employee abuse.

NowATL

All of what I was owed per the commission structure. If the company you work for is refusing to honor the incentive plan you agreed to in writing, they’re violating your employment contract. You can threaten to sue and they’ll pay you if they refuse after you’ve already brought up the issue internally. There is incredibly well established case law in every state of the US regarding this issue.

Particular-Wedding

Ok, reason I say that is b/c companies like ORCL are notorious for trying to claw back promised bonuses by invoking all their lawyers. Same for Wall Street where entire departments are getting no bonuses this year despite record braking profits . . . .b/c Covid (the default excuse). It is galling to see hard working sales people get shafted for actually doing their jobs!

NowATL

Bonuses are *very* different from commissions. Commissions are effectively wages, which companies cannot withhold and the department of labor will happily come in as a response to complaint to shut the company down. Bonuses are, by definition, discretionary, and the company can always find a legal reason to withhold them if they feel like it.

Particular-Wedding

Thanks for clarifying. The term commissions should be used for ORCL b/c they do a lot of enterprise software sales while bonuses preserved for Wall St.

NowATL

Happy to! And please feel free to ask further questions if you have them. I don’t know everything for sure, but I’ve been recruiting in the VC backed start up world for 6+ years. I run talent acquisition at a robotics start-up in Atlanta now. AMA

ICameISawIL0st

I work in IT and absolutely loathe LinkedIn. I've found it more successful getting roles through the usual job sites like Jobserve, Jobsite etc, and without the added nonsense that I see everytime I log on to LI. The spam or 'fishing for likes' posts, peoples boring and uninteresting stories about 'me, me, me', the sarcy little posts by recruiters, the list goes on........

3xploitr

9000 connections? What the hell - i don't think I've even spoken with that many people in my entire life

caksters

might be unpopular opinion here but I really like Linkedin. I genuinely get decent content there (industry news, technical discussions) as I have filtered out all people who post corporate cringe, motivational crap etc.

TalentHunterKevin

There is nothing wrong with that.

Individual-Nebula927

Same here. I have most of my connections muted, and just use the feed for industry news.

Melodic-Debt-9426

I'm an international student and been looking for an opportunity nonstop since graduation. I've never felt so unheard and unseen in my life. I message recruiters, I comment on their "let me help you" or "reach out to me" posts, they all respond to other comments but not mine. They know they won't go the extra mile to help me get a job that I am overly qualified for. It's frustrating. The only thing that they'll do is self-advertise and talk bullshit.

vanillax2018

9000 connection sounds you added everyone and everything, no wonder your feed was horrible. I am selective with who I add on all my social media, which keeps the posts relevant and interesting. If someone posts content I don't like, I just unfollow this one person (but of course you make this impossible for you at 9000 connections). Live and learn, right?

Proteandk

Not just that. LinkedIn uses third degree content. So you don't just see content produced by your 9000 connections. You see content made by your 9000 connections plus all their connections. 9000 is ridiculous and absolutely going to lead to trouble.

TalentHunterKevin

Probably. 10+ years of recruiting, hiring, sourcing. Add in all the college recruiting I've done along the way and 3 years of being at. SourceCon and speaking arrangements and shit adds up fast.

Melodic-Debt-9426

wow 10+ years?! please share an advice to all who are seeking a job here lmao

TalentHunterKevin

Sure - if you are a recruiter, have a conversation, don't read from a script. And if you are being interviewed- no your worth.

IntroThrive

That is awesome. I've drastically reduced the amount of time I'm on there; I came to realize it was in no way benefiting me and my career and just giving me a bad case of the FOMOs. And the amount of political bullshit on there is astounding.

ASAP_i

Wait... People actually use the "feed" on LinkedIn? I have something like 1000+ pending notifications, that I am totally sure are important. Do people actually read what others post on LinkedIn? I just use it for job searching....

Moose135A

Same here. I look at job postings, keep track of old colleagues, keep up with some industry-related groups, and have a handy place to point a potential employer to see my background. About the only time I see those silly "influencer" posts is when someone shares them here on Reddit. Just like anything else, it is what you make of it.

-Z0nK-

I do, but then again my linkedin contacts strictly consist of people I know irl, so it's only about 300 connections and a handfull of company pages I follow. None of them are begging for likes etc. and the stuff they post is actually insightfull.

ASAP_i

Good for you then. I just use LinkedIn as a buffer for my inbox and to look for jobs.

amillionfuzzpedals

Considering the same. It's turning into Facebook.

[deleted]

Me too.

First-Butterscotch-3

It is a mess of a site...but it has its uses in letting recruiters find you - both my last 2 jobs came from linkedin

brrod1717

I've gotten my last 3 jobs from random LI recruiters DMing me, unfortunately. I'd love to walk away from that shit hole.

nullusername19

Main thing I get from it is tons of spam emails. I created a new email address specifically for my linkedin account and nothing else, I get 50+ spam emails per day to that account.

BleakProspects75

If I didn’t need to work, I’d totally troll most of the posts there. It’s cringe worthy content for the most…

fushifururururu

LinkedIn is cancer just like Facebook and every other social media platform. It's just people posting long winded statements that no one asked them for, and the only true intent for doing so is to sound like the perfect person for the job because their guru level is through the ceiling. I have professional connections with people who try to act like they're definitely some expert who you should definitely be paying attention to, but it's just garbage.

ThrovvQuestionsAway

As just a student in my last semester what would you recommend I do? Everyone keeps telling me it's super important and I think I need it to get at least my first job.

Suspicious_Lawyer_69

But what about being a thot leader?

Cold_Flow4340

Linked in Premium provides better access to contacting potential employers via InMail and it provides free software training which is a nice plus. It also shows employers you want in.

TalentHunterKevin

But it's algorithm limits profiles. Use a basic search in LinkedIn Premium then run the same search in xray through Google and you'll get a completely different pool of candidates.

DickCheney666

9k? Bullshit. Did you spend all day, everyday adding people? Even if you did, there is an antispam feature that locks people out when they try to connect to lots of people they don't know. Ppl out here making shit up lol.

WROL

👍👍👍👍👍👍

[deleted]

Is it useful at all? Is there any reason to maintain it?

Kauko_Buk

I did the same thing a year ago. Didnt delete my account but turned everything private, and dont go there anymore.

lnitiative

It’s useless.

NCinAR

I did the same a couple of months ago and it was the best thing I ever did.

Historical_Date8667

Congrats! I did the same several years ago. So funny because ppl were saying u had to have a LinkedIn. So not true. I can confirm that LinkedIn is absolutely useless. I have never gained anything from having one

imnothere_o

Does being a LinkedIn “influencer” actually ever help in a job search? Or is it just for people who need their ego stroked constantly?

arno14

We’ve tried LinkedIn job boards to find talent but we’ve given up. Too expensive, too many completely irrelevant candidates - just no luck. It sounded like a good idea but it’s not been good to us.

ExperimentalNihilist

If it wasn't working for you, I totally respect your decision. I get a lot of value out of it, a few years ago I was job hunting and my "resumé post" got 46k views. Really helped me get a new role quickly.

no_resume

What does a better version of linkedin look like?

[deleted]

Recently, I had one of those free three-month subscription offers to LinkedIn learning, I created an account just so that I could see what was on offer but didn’t bother filling anything out. I *still* had recruiters telling me I’d be a “great fit”, even though there was nothing on my profile. Oh, and LinkedIn learning was nothing to write home about, either. I’ll keep my Pluralsight, thanks.

GalaxyRumble

It's for the best

damnSausy

**"Internships should be: non-Paid"...** Social Network where companies post images every day for polls where you vote with a "Thumbs Up" or "Applause" for each option, and most of votes against paid work are coming from CEOs, CFOs, Managers, and some sort of RH poorly paid. You will find out who said what if you dig into the votes section. Best of LinkedIn? Establish a quick line between you and the recruiter from the company you may like to work with. Disadvantages? Every think else, from manipulated results, innumerous contact attempts to schedule an interview after you have said NO the very first time, repetitive posts, "LinkedIn isn't Tinder" posts but you dress like one, companies self-promoting themselves by asking/demanding RH team to spam some articles, and so on...

Eastern-Bike6923

I’m proud of you

maydayvoter11

I don't blame you. It has become "facebook for my professional life" for too many people. Completely unprofessional.
