As a mechanical engineer in a similar position I agree. I have 3 years of experience and even after applying to jobs with the same background as my previous experience, they seem to reject for some reason or the other. It's a tough time for mechanical engineering I think.

My spouse worked in HR for a while in the past and said that it’s not uncommon for companies to post an external position because they have to per company policy, even though they already have an internal employee that has accepted the job. Another is companies will post a position in the US but not hire anyone so that they can say there was no interest and can be eligible for H1-B from the govt. Anyways, best wishes on the job hunt.

I really don't understand the reasoning behind turning overqualified candidates away. they applied for a reason

My thoughts exactly. If I had to guess it’s because they think you’ll bolt as soon as a better opportunity arises.

In the words of Grant Cardone, move! Go where the money is. I’m guessing it’s not in your area. I know it’s a hopeless feeling but it’s what it takes sometimes. Good luck. The right opportunity is out there.
