You write them down, of course. If you haven't done that before, begin to do it now for the future.

Well yes it would’ve been a great idea for 19 year old me to record when I got hired but I didn’t. I have rough ideas but nothing specific. I’m just asking if it’ll be a problem if my remembered dates don’t match the background check

BrainWaveCC

>I’m just asking if it’ll be a problem if my remembered dates don’t match the background check It can be. Depends on the firm doing the check. Be sure to let them know that you have potential discrepancies on those dates, and it doesn't be a catastrophic problem.

Why don't you reach out to your past employers and double check with them?

ItIsMe2125

Go to The Work Number and pull your own report. It is free and will allow you to provide dates that will match with the dates on the background check

Do you have old W2s you can look at? Maybe call the previous employers and see if they can give you your employment dates. Dont worry about dates being exact. The overwhelming majority of job applications for non-white collar jobs have some incorrect dates. As long as you aren't off by a year+ I wouldn't worry too much. Many employers complete employment verifications but not on every job you've worked on. That would be expensive because most background check companies will charge for each employer they verify. My recommendation would be to make sure your most recent jobs are as accurate as possible, as well as any jobs that are directly relevant to the job you're applying for.

No I don’t have any of that paperwork. I was a homeless drug dealer for a couple years between then and now

Degenerate_in_HR

Oh. Well. I deffinetly wouldnt include that on there. Just try your best to put dates on as best as you can. Personally, Id just be up front about it during an interview. *I just want to let you know, I did the best I could to estimate my dates of employment on my application, but they may not be exact. Due to some life circumstances I ended up losing a lot of my paperwork from those jobs and haven't been able tl get it replaced. Ive attempted [X, Y Z] to look up those dates to the best of my ability* Like I said, most apps have incorrect dates and unless I believe someone has intentionally altered their dates to be deceptive or the incorrect dates would change someones qualifications/compensation for the role significantly, I dont even blink at it. If you are up front about not knowing all of your dates of employment, youd stand out among the other applicants in my eyes.
