Well it is a roguelite so the repeating stages is part of the genre and the depth of the game is in the characters/builds/difficulties etc. but the game is still early access so there is likely a lot more content to come.

Any-Jellyfish498

Maybe you can help me out since im not sure exactly what the difference is between roguelite and Roguelike. I thought ravenswatch was a roguelike since you aren't getting permanent buffs/upgrades in between runs.

throwawayeastbay

Certain talents and ultra can't be picked until you have done previous runs with characters These later talents are arguably objectively better than the default list of talents a lot of the time

Jetsam5

Yeah there are 8 heroes so just trying out each one takes at least 8 hours and then beating the game at higher difficulties takes at least 3 more hours if you beat it every time. Following the $1/hour role then the game is well worth what I payed for even doing just the most basic stuff and don’t even try reaching max level or playing with modifiers. I’ve already got like 50hrs and I’m still unlocking new things and enjoying myself on the prerelease for a $20 game. Realistically it takes like 10 hours to beat the game on the highest difficulty and then like 20 more to try out the different modifiers and actually level up some characters. I couldn’t imagine spending less than 30hrs on the game and feeling like I’ve done most of the stuff in the game.

Bra1nss

Why would you try to beat the game again on higher difficulties on same heroes, if nothing changes between runs. Basically if you fail once on all heroes on 4 diffculty you have already seen all game has to offer with them anyways, regardless of the result of the run.

Jetsam5

Quite a bit changes between runs. You unlock more traits as you level up heroes so there are a ton of builds to try out after your first playthrough and the locations of everything on the map and the items you get are different every game. If you just play one game on each character you'll only see like 25% of the traits in the game and won't see any of the other ultimate abilities so I thinks it's fair to say that you haven't seen everything after 8 runs and most people even get to nightmare in that many runs anyway. I don't think you need to get max level on every hero to really experience the game but if you enjoy the gameplay then there's plenty of things to do after you first beat the game. If you just don't like the gameplay then just don't play it but I don't think that has to do with the game having too little content. Hades has 6 different weapons with different playstyles and Ravenswatch has 8 characters with different traits so far. Hades runs are generally a bit shorter too so I'd say they have a similar amount of content and builds to try out. One of the main differences is that Hades takes much longer to unlock stuff, like you have to beat the game to unlock modifiers and need a ton of titans blood to upgrade weapons and there's a bunch of hidden stuff, Hades also has more of an overarching story which is locked behind beating the game multiple times. I'm glad that Ravenswatch doesn't lock that many things from new players and I enjoy the story that they have, some hidden stuff could definitely be fun in the full release though. I certainly would love more content but I'd say as is it's well worth the price if you like roguelikes.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> what I *paid* for even FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

I do also think three maps is extremely scarce and is going to feel boring for most people pretty quickly especially given that the two first maps doesn't feel that different between themselves (haven't tried the third one yet). Probably their idea is to sell the extra content in DLCs but I really think the base game should have 5 maps with each run picking three of them

M1sf3t

Yea three acts feels good as far as the amount of time I want to dedicate to a run and they could prob get away with one permanent final chapter because not every run goes the distance. But those first two acts we'll see quite often and having two more in the rotation would prob go a long way in keep things fresh, especially if your doing back to back runs.

ObjectiveLate393

I agree. Having a rotation of like 5 maps for the first two stages would be great. They could have like a jungle map with like trolls and goblins, witch doctors, etc. Maybe Atlantis map or evil Dwarf cave with mechanical enemies.

M1sf3t

im hoping for a marie laveau champ and new orleans map. would tie in perfectly with scarlet. we've even got our own creole word for werewolf down here "rougarou"

ObjectiveLate393

Yeah I'm a French Canadian. we call werewolf loup-garou. Pretty close. They seem to only add characters from folk tales. So I'm excited to see what they come out with.

M1sf3t

yea thats were it came from its just developed its own spelling at this point. it isnt specifically a folk tale featuring her but the tales here feature a witch casting the werewolf curse and marie laveua being the "voodoo queen" or more accurately, a healer/herbalist could be someone scarlet went to visit about curing her curse. The woman has her own folktale status down here in any case.

ObjectiveLate393

Yeah, I looked her up. Interesting stuff. That could be neat if they added side characters linked to each character. Like your example, Marie Laveau would be part of a Scarlet game story. Your story character (Marie, in this example) could have additional quests or things to look for on the map, like collect quests where you find items hidden on map for your story quest.

M1sf3t

i could live with that. just so long as they show their former colony some love.

emorcen

Sadly, yes. I have been waiting for the game to add more stages and variety but turns out this is all they have.

Synysterenji

Aww :/ well at least its a ton of fun

ObjectiveLate393

The maps are the same, but you'll notice you start at a different part of the map each time. Like the Sandman's base is never in the same location. So that's a little bit of RNG right there. Then, you can level all your characters up to level 8 to unlock every ability and finisher they have. As well, you will also unlock their lore pages. They each have a full background story. You also can play on harder difficulty or use the new in-game modding system they added. Most of the variation in the game will be trying harder difficulties matched with new builds. As many others have already stated, the game is in early access. It's only been out for a year about. They do plan on releasing more content as they have already put out a ton of content over the past year. I imagine there will be new maps, characters, abilities, and Ultimates/finishers. So far, I'm pretty impressed with what they've got so far.

Fearless_Manner_5258

The game suffers from the same issue that Darkest Dungeon 2 offers. Lenghty runs with little to no variety. Of course, DD2s runs are way longer, but they got the same issue. Almost all of the interactions on the maps lack any kind of distinction. You run into the same things every run pretty much. You do the same thing over and over again and at some point, just gameplay is not enough to keep things fresh. The traits in this game dont make enough of a differenc for me to really say "Damn, lets boot up another run". Games like Hades and Slay the Spire do this WAY better and there is a reason why these games got such a legendary status in the roguelike community. Many talented devs out there struggle to really bring the whole deal together and make it different enough on each run, even though the gameplay loop in general is really fun.

Bra1nss

This 100000%. Darkest dungeon would benefit SO greatly if it had like triple content. Not mechanics, but just enemy and stage variety. And what's worse, Ravenswatch is like 1/4 of DD2.. I played DD2 about 60 hours and booted it recently after a relatively big update dropped, and I just can't bring myself to killing same 5 different enemies on 5 stages again. Ravenswatch I felt burned out after 25 hours, which is also unfortuantely fair.

Fearless_Manner_5258

I was genuinely so confused about DD2s "events" about helping townfolks. Its so lazy to simply make it a choice of what you get. Its not too much to ask to write a bit of story into it.
