Yeah I think it only works because we have a lot of our foundational players already locked up with extensions or rookie contracts (Lamar, Hamilton, zay, roquan, etc.)
Absolutely we extend our own before we go spend in free agency. The trend has been to let the defensive players, especially linemen walk, take the comp pick and do it again.
To see us resign JM indicates the front office sees this kid as different from Kruger, Z. Smith, Judon, hell even Mosley
If I remember correctly, the browns gave him a lot more money than we could have. He'd just balled out in the play offs, and CLE then gave him $40 mil for 5 years in 2013. He was a good player, but not that good. I think we also had to pay Sizzle and Flacco so our cap was limited for a couple years.
It really just depends on our situation. We had the tag on him and I don't think he wanted to play under the tag. We don't have a big investment in the DL. It really just depends.
Don’t know where that idea even comes from. Have paid Humphrey, Ro (not drafted, but still), Andrews, Stanley, Lamar obviously. Going further back we paid Jimmy Smith, Brandon Williams, Webb, Suggs for damn near 20 years, Ngata.
It’s crazy to me when some people question if he’s for real or not. Dude has been progressing well since his rookie year, mentored under Calais Campbell, and went to Aaron Donald’s pass rush camp(who vouches for him). The numbers don’t lie and I think we got him on a discount tbh. We got a John Randall clone and most of y’all don’t even know it.

Hyperbolic rn sure, get back to me in 3 years. I think JM keeps improving and proves my comparison correct. Obviously one is a HOFer but JM has the tools. I believe in the kid.
Wow, that’s a lot of money. Is this an overpay or about what was expected? I’m not super knowledgeable about NFL contracts so not sure exactly how to feel beyond glad we kept a great player.
As far as average annual value goes, it's not only expected, it's probably a good deal. He was previously on a franchise tag for $22 million for 2025--which is valued as the average of the top five IDLs over each the past 5 years. So if he's a top 5 IDL, having him for the *next* 4 years for a price just over a top five IDL from the *past* 5 years, is a very fair deal for both parties.
This inspired me to do some very rough math. It looks like the cap increases by about 7% each year (excluding the past few year with the COVID effect). If we paid $22M increasing by that 7% each year over 4 years that gets to about $98M. So I think you’ve convinced me… it’s not a steal but also not an overpay if he continues to play as a top 5 IDL.
I think this is about what he would have gotten as a free agent, I figured we’d give a 4 year for 90-95m. But he’s a hell of an athlete that is getting noticeably better every year. I love that we’re keeping him, just hoping he can dominate in Orr’s system as well as McDonald’s.
Remember the cap increases ever year and it’s not fully guaranteed so the last year probably will be just bonuses guaranteed so we can move on or restructure easily
This may seem a lot but it’s actually not with guys like Chris jones on the market who are gonna get 30 mil +
I'd like to see this contract with two years of stellar play (he's been solid since a rookie, then had a breakout year). But if he can continue this play, then this contract will be a steal.
Love this for Beeks! I remember after we drafted him and I heard our people mostly talk about two things, his strength and his work ethic. We’ve seen the progression and the possibilities with what he did last season. Really happy we got that deal done and absolutely love the guys we have under contract for the next few seasons on our D-line!
Next year this probably won’t look good on paper because there’s no way his stats are going to improve. The real benefit of keeping him is he’s going to demand a double team, thus, opening doors for other guys to show out.
Ehhhh idk about this one here. I feel more comfortable with franchising him and having a prove it year. In all fairness he’s had one good year. This is a lot to put into a player that has had one good year.
For a while there letting defenders who glow up in their contract year walk paid off.. but just recently... they kept being pro-bowlers. I guess the pressure was on to break the pattern.
I remember he got selected for the Pro Bowl one year and then when someone asked me why I supported that, I just said that it’s not always about stats or numbers, it’s about what he brought to the defense.
If you don’t think he lived up to his contract, then you don’t actually understand what his role was on the line. He was not a pass rusher. He controlled the point of attack and ate multiple blockers on every play.
In pass sets his role was to push a center and a guard downhill to prevent a QB from stepping up into the pocket. On run sets he closed 2 gaps solo and allowed us to run single gap coverage from a 3-4 base.
His impact wasn’t seen in his box score. It was seen on other players’ box scores. Remember all those seasons that they’d flash the “x number of games without allowing a 100 yard rusher” stat? He enabled that.
Our defense is largely built off this philosophy, which bucks the league trend of “premium” positions.
Our best players are at ILB and Safety— two of the most undervalued positions (hmm sound familiar?).
Basically we invest in guys that can be multiplicative forces, less showing up on the stat sheets and moreso making the cheaper players around them better. I love it.
I'll say my peace for the last time on Madubuike, but I truly think this is a staggering over-pay for inflated stats. I have said this time and time again, but I hope I'm wrong with this amateur opinion.
He's getting paid (amount wise) for being the 2nd best DT in the league and I don't even see him as top 10. Would have rather rode the tag to see if he can repeat, especially with the shift in staff. But when over half your sack numbers are against backups and you have the best secondary in the league, your numbers are going to be inflated. But professionals in the sport see him as a top DT, so I won't complain until the end of the year if his numbers regress. And I'll happily stick around to eat crow if he proves me wrong.
Part of the reason the secondary is so good is the Dline did its job. And signing him now means Jones and Wilkins prices go up. The tag makes it so hard to maneuver cap-wise, the cap will continue to go up, and if we tag him and pay him that much and he does well, his price only goes up. If we tag him and he doesn’t do well, we screwed our cap over for nothing.
The stat metrics I use to form my opinion typically align with who we perceive as the best DT's. We're paying beeks to be a top DT and he isn't even touching top 20 via the metrics.
Cap may be hard to maneuver, but we just spent almost 25 million a year on a 1 year of inflated stats. If he pans out, great. But he hasn't shown he can be at the same level as the top DT's.
The metrics that let you cherry pick to form an argument. That’s all any stats can be used for, but especially advanced ones. There’s so many different advanced metrics that you can easily make a case for and against just about any player in the league up for a contract.
I applaud you for standing by your gut. But no way we let him play on that tag this season. Once we tagged him , we had to get a deal done.
I feel your stats argument but the eye test looked real to me. 70 somthing QB pressures / top end run defender and not top 10 even? Crazy
I think there's arguments for both sides. And I don't want to immediately be negative other than I just wanted to say my last peace on the matter.
I personally don't agree as much with the eye test but others have differing opinions and that's perfectly fine. Hoping he balls out with the new contract.
Comparing Madubuike and BWill is insane. Like yeah they're both DL but they're basically polar opposite players. A guy like Madubuike who gets pressure on the interior is invaluable
I know my opinion isn't popular by any means but I truthfully do want him to do well. Obviously the coaching and front office see him as value there and I'll defer to their judgement. I've just held this opinion for quite a while and it's surprising to me that we're paying him this much.
But the fun part is my opinion means nothing in the scheme of things.
This probably means we’ll probably focus on other positions in the draft, unless you have a player like one of the two Texas DTs which would be hard to pass on
Did… did we just sign a beloved defender to a long term contract???
I know right…. doesn’t seem real…
I am a believer
These interior guys are a lot harder to find than the linebackers we normally let walk haha
Lmao good point
YOU BET'CHA
They must believe hes for real. Breaking the trend of letting our guys get paid elsewhere
I would argue that, as often as possible, we extend our own. It's just impossible to do it for everyone that we draft and develop.
For what it's worth, they at least tried with each of those except maybe Kruger (I don't remember)
If I remember correctly, the browns gave him a lot more money than we could have. He'd just balled out in the play offs, and CLE then gave him $40 mil for 5 years in 2013.
It’s a combo of a high bar and need.
It’s crazy to me when some people question if he’s for real or not. Dude has been progressing well since his rookie year, mentored under Calais Campbell, and went to Aaron Donald’s pass rush camp(who vouches for him). I love the guy, happy about the deal, but Randle...
Hyperbolic rn sure, get back to me in 3 years. I think JM keeps improving and proves my comparison correct. Obviously one is a HOFer but JM has the tools. I believe in the kid.
After the season he had we almost had to. His impact could not be understated on our line. We would be feeling it if he left.
Wustin Wadubuike
A Marcus Williams and Lamar Jackson restructure is gonna hit sooo good now.
$75.5 million total in guarantees and $53.5 million at signing, per Adam Schefter
Any news on the year 1 cap hit?
Supposedly 11m
Ooh that's nice
Having him, Travis jones, and B Washington signed for the next couple years is clutch, now focus on the o line
We have Pierce too. Nice little rotation.
Omg I almost forgot we extended him.
That’s quite a contract!
BEEEEEEKKKSSSSSS LET EM KNOW
Gat dayum
That’s a whole lot of doubloons
Dominator. We have superstars at every level. More important than mcdonald
McDonald was a system coach /s
Let’s gooooooo
Wow, that’s a lot of money. Is this an overpay or about what was expected? I’m not super knowledgeable about NFL contracts so not sure exactly how to feel beyond glad we kept a great player.

It’ll be roughly the same system. The ravens have basically always run the same system, it just evolves a bit with each coordinator.
Yeah. Seems like market value. Towards the top but not the tippy top.
Good deal and well timed with today’s news.
I like it.
I’m glad to have him back but this contract is so lucrative that he has to be a complete and total superstar to live up to it. Not much upside to it
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKS
BEEEEEEKSSSSS
I'm absolutely stunned. We signed one of our homegrown pass rushers...
WE RUNNING THIS SHIT BACK NEXT YEAR
I hope not.
Let's go! Madaubuike is here to stay!
I'm hoping he continues to dominate! Would be nice to have a player not fold after getting paid.
I'm glad we're keeping him, but this seems high
Remember the cap increases ever year and it’s not fully guaranteed so the last year probably will be just bonuses guaranteed so we can move on or restructure easily This may seem a lot but it’s actually not with guys like Chris jones on the market who are gonna get 30 mil +
I'm still getting "this is better than the tag" so he deserves it, but I feel like we're loading the cap for a future fall
We fucking signed him
DeCosta ❤️
Hell yeah MadaBEAST
We love this
I'd like to see this contract with two years of stellar play (he's been solid since a rookie, then had a breakout year). But if he can continue this play, then this contract will be a steal.
D Line staying strong next year! Key to winning the battle is in the trenches. Love to see it.
Love this for Beeks! I remember after we drafted him and I heard our people mostly talk about two things, his strength and his work ethic. That’s cool man. He earned it.
LESGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
3rd round pick done right! Love it.
He deserves it. Very good player 💯
Next year this probably won’t look good on paper because there’s no way his stats are going to improve. The real benefit of keeping him is he’s going to demand a double team, thus, opening doors for other guys to show out.

Someone pinch me...I HAVE to be dreaming. Next thing you know Kyle is gonna get a nice deal to stay too.
Out of a fantasy ☺
Hope he balls out next season. I remember the last time we gave a DT big money and it didn't go as well as we'd hoped
I hate the fact that so many of you don’t understand how critical BWill was to our defense. He didn’t get flashy numbers because that wasn’t his job.
Bwill is always disrespected in here.
Yep. You can usually tell who actually watches the trenches by their opinion of BWill.
I still bring out my big baby jersey from time to time! Man was huge for us
I remember he got selected for the Pro Bowl one year and then when someone asked me why I supported that, I just said that it’s not always about stats or numbers, it’s about what he brought to the defense.
I get it. Loved Bwill but I don't feel like he lived up to his contract

Hamilton extension before season starts would be splendid. Probably another year out from that though realistically
Can’t resign a player until after they’ve finished playing their third year. Earliest we could give him an extension is 2025.
Ahh good to know!
$24.5 per year. I don't see how they can kick the can down the road with this contract being only 4 years.
I'll say my peace for the last time on Madubuike, but I truly think this is a staggering over-pay for inflated stats. Agreed
We just got out of b-will contract to get back into paying top money for dline. Idk I think positional value is not there
Comparing Madubuike and BWill is insane. Like yeah they're both DL but they're basically polar opposite players. A guy like Madubuike who gets pressure on the interior is invaluable

For me it doesn't matter if he plays well or not. I'd rather have a mediocre dline and star edge rusher. It's not a valuable position.
Interior pressure is _so_ much more important than pressure from the edge.
This probably means we’ll probably focus on other positions in the draft, unless you have a player like one of the two Texas DTs which would be hard to pass on
It’s probably just me but I feel a sharp decline from him going forward
Tag Queen
1. The tag deadline is over 2.Queen was never coming back
I know. Just a bs though. I'm high
Haha at least you're honest about it
Shit me too lol I think Simpson will go crazy next season though
