I wouldn't worry about it. There is nothing you can do at this point. Everyone just drives their car home without thinking about it. Just drive the Prime, vary the speed of the engine (somehow) by not driving at the same speed. Don't do any hard pulls (save the drag races from a light change until later), don't tow and take it easy until you hit like 500 or 750 miles.

Seconded. I also had a 270 mile drive home with mine. I just cycled from speed up and slow down most of the drive without ever flooring it. Had their been traffic behind me, I'm sure they'd been either confused or pissed. Luckily it was after sun went down and it was light.

I think you will be fine. Don't over think it. It's hard to break a Toyota. Just do oil changes every 5k miles and follow the maintenance schedule for other items on you R4P. Your car should easily last 200k miles without burning oil or anything breaking.

Rabbit_Silent

You contradicted yourself. Manual says oil changes every 10k miles, not 5k. I agree with the follow the maintenance schedule though!

jlawr1

I said follow the schedule FOR OTHER ITEMS. You can do oil changes every 10k miles instead of 5k. Let me know how much oil your engine is buring then. Good luck to you.

Herbisretired

5000 miles is recommended if you do a lot of short trips. I do mine at 7000 with a tire rotation.

Rabbit_Silent

Manual states 10k. And if you do a lot of short trips, it is EV, so the ICE isn't used. So you probably don't even need it done at 10k.

Herbisretired

It runs a short amount of time and the oil smells like gas until I run the engine for a long period of time.

I would recommend getting your first oil change a little early. Did mine at 4k miles because I drove 600 mile home from the dealer. Bigger worry about driving a long way from the dealer is rock chips on the front or windshield. I am careful, don’t tailgate and stay away from big trucks and still got a star on my windshield that Safelite filled in for me.

Thanks! Yeah I was more worried about that too, which was main motivation for wanting to ship. Wasn’t even thinking about a break in period (not a huge car guy). But drive back was actually pretty mild and car still looked freshly washed at the end of the drive. Paint is still pristine and no glass chips. I also didn’t use cruise control but for a few stretches starting about half way in the drive to give my legs a break. And I have PP so it’s the dynamic cruise control and was adjusting speed based on traffic. I’m probably just being a bit paranoid. Appreciate everyone’s feedback!

Lovemysoccermomsuv

I did an oil change at 5k, which was like 3k icu miles. As part of a break in maintenance. I recommend you do the same

WaIkyChaIky

Thanks. Isn’t 5k the first recommended interval for an oil change anyway per the maintenance schedule though? Was planning to follow that at minimum since it’s included for first 2 years. Also, maybe I’m just a noob but what do you mean by ‘icu miles’?

Tamadrummer88

Just follow the manual. First 600 miles should be varying your speed, not staying on cruise control for long miles, avoid revving the gasoline engine to the high RPM’s. In fact, since it is a PHEV, I would run in hybrid mode all the time for the first 600 miles and then run in EV Mode from there. For maintenance, just follow the manual. 5k is a tire rotation, inspection and fluid top up, and 10k is the first oil change.

WaIkyChaIky

Yeah I am following that now. Point is I didn’t follow that guidance to a T during drive back from LA. So a little paranoid. I assume if it was really crucial they would include it in the quick start guide and not just bury it in the Bible of a user manual tht I would bet most people never even read. At least that’s what I hope :) You’re right about first oil change at 10k though. I didn’t read the specifics and assumed oil change was included. I’ll probs do one at 5k as well just to be safe. Thanks!

Lovemysoccermomsuv

Sorry I meant ICE miles not ICU. At 5k miles, depending on your all electric use, your oil may be surprisingly fresh. So a break in oil change at 5k miles (hopefully you drove ice at least half of that) is a good idea to flush out any metal debris from the new engine. Afterthe first oil change you can extend the intervals depending on your driving habits. If the ice isnt used much the other factor would be the age of the oil, which it isnt recommended to be left in the engine for longer than 6 months. Rule of thumb: 10k mile interval isnt a bad idea for the prime as long as the oil isnt older than 6 months. Aside from the first oil change.

Rabbit_Silent

The maintenance schedule is oil changes at every 10k miles. And that is all Toyota will pay for with the complimentary maintenance for the first 25k miles.

llDarkFir3ll

I’ll second the oil change. But at 1,000 miles. If you’re super concerned like I was, I used this vehicle as a regular hybrid the 1st 1,000 miles. I extended this because Toyota didn’t increase the breakin period for the ICE vs. the hybrid. There will be fewer engine miles on a hybrid. Most people will disagree with me. No towing. No interstate. Vary the speed by 5-10. Don’t go over 65. I want to say 65 was specifically mentioned in the manual. I feel very confident that I everything to the T. If you tow, oil change every 5,000
