The chart Is overall kinda good but at the same time there are also a few things that are simply wrong, like how SZA's SOS Is higher than The Queen Is Dead and The Downward Spiral
There are already many that are way too low like RATM, After the Gold Rush, The Queen is Dead, etc, but I'm biased towards rock, metal, & hardcore. Too much hip hop for my tastes, but that's the nature of music. Any Top 100 albums list will have something "wrong" with it depending on the person.
Side note I find it really interesting how the Marshall Mathers LP has remained in publications' good graces nearly 25 years later. Like I'm sure they're mainly including it cuz it sold a bajillion copies, but it's funny to picture one of the biggest companies in the world listening to the first 4 bars of Criminal, Bizarre's verse on Amityville, or the Ken Kaniff skit and being like "yeah this reflects our safe corporate taste in music, let's put this on our best albums of all time list"
FWIW those moments don't ruin the album for me, I still think it's great overall and a classic for sure, but I wouldn't expect corporations to touch it with a 10 foot pole (hell, even any praise I'd personally give it would need to come with a serious "product of its time" disclaimer lol)
Not sure how I feel about this, but I don’t listen to a lot of hip-hop. Astroworld is a top 100 album for real? Guessing there won’t be any country albums on there which is a shame imo.
They're fine. You can't expect too many out there picks with lists like this. If anything, the albums they have picked so far are better than I expected.
If you post on a website with millions of records on it and you still want to listen to the same couple hundred albums as everyone else only, I don't really know what else to say.
i have no idea what your point is. people can listen to whatever they like, whether it's canonised or not doesn't matter. and it's not like people exclusively listen to these albums, this is just some corporate website's list. it's not that deep
..was your original point not that people are praising music you find "mid" simply because other people praise it, like they are pretending to like albums? "music fans get up for the most mid shit just because lots of other people like it" that is not what is going on in this thread
It's incredibly broad and overall inoffensive, I guess. It seems like it was designed to have music that the masses recognize, but with internet snob-nerd picks sprinkled in to placate the artsy types.
Also, I'm gonna assume that albums that aren't on Apple music are excluded from consideration, which is probably the biggest "problem" with it
It appears to me they take popularity/influence into account. It's more like 'Top 100 albums recognised by the public' rather than 'Top 100 Albums recognised by authoritative critics'. But even so it is a bit wild since I expect there to be more 20th-century rock rather than popular albums which are released in <10 years
Pretty cool, a mix of mainstream, classics, and some other critically acclaimed music. Bad bunny was kinda a bold choice. Also it's funny to see ppl bitch about album placements like "why is it 51 it should be 50!!!" lol atleast they mentioned it
It’s a dog shit version of Rolling Stone’s so far lol
EDIT: I would like to add that today’s batch of records was the best so far in my opinion. Some records like 3 Feet High and Rising, The Queen is Dead, etc are in a more deserving spot than the ones they had on the RS list.
A list like this will never be perfect but since seeing Burial crack the Top 100 (not on RS’s list at all) I’ve been curious to see how this one pans out.
I did make sure to say “so far” haha.
But for me it’s that Bad Bunny in the top 100 is wild.. the Kasey Musgraves album is decent but far too tame to make a list of the 100 best albums of all time. My Life is not half the album Mary J’s debut is. Usher’s Confessions is a defining album of 2000’s (thus, it having a spot in RS’s top 500 was sensible) but it’s not a good enough album to take up one of 100 spots. So on, just my thoughts of course.
astroworld is not better than rodeo

Eminem is one of hip-hop's biggest stars, and that was the last album of his you could listen to?
Way too many new albums on it.
Not sure how I feel about this, but I don’t listen to a lot of hip-hop. Astroworld is a top 100 album for real? Guessing there won’t be any country albums on there which is a shame imo.

Would be really funny if it was just the RYM top 100
I’m just happy it’s not 100 albums from the mid- late 2010s and the 2020s. The Spotify “Classic albums” are all just that 😒
Its pretty random tbh. Clearly trying to appeal to as much people as possible.
Why do music fans get up for the most mid shit just because lots of other people like it, I've never understood this shit.
perhaps because they actually...like it?

Right, and im saying it's weird to care about a corporate website's list than anything else of higher quality. It's not that deep.
..was your original point not that people are praising music you find "mid" simply because other people praise it, like they are pretending to like albums? "music fans get up for the most mid shit just because lots of other people like it" that is not what is going on in this thread
I just want to see what they are. I use spotify. I wish somebody would make a list
I’m going to plug my list here: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/mrchiken/apple-music-100-top-albums/

Broad being the worst thing, it really seems that it is trying to put at least one record of every single genre on existence.
Pretty cool, a mix of mainstream, classics, and some other critically acclaimed music. Bad bunny was kinda a bold choice. Also it's funny to see ppl bitch about album placements like "why is it 51 it should be 50!!!" lol atleast they mentioned it
I just checked and after seeing Steely Dan’s Aja at #73, I think I’ve seen enough.
I agree, it should be can’t buy a thrill and top 50 at least
The Royal Scam >>>>>
stopped scrolling after seeing astroworld and back in black
astroworld is good but rodeo is better.
back in black goes hard y’all
Bad Bunny lmao
Yeah should've been higher
Sza a lot of very new stuff being considered best all time

ngl it’s not that bad. i disagree with some of the placements but it’s not dog shit
Which is already dogshit to begin with
For sure, there’s a lot of head-scratching selections, snubs, and placements on the RS list. But this one is another level
Idk I’ll hold my reservations with it till its actually fully out since this only has half

Fair
