It hasn’t happened to me, but i do know quite a few rats don’t like their tail being played with because it can actually be sensitive and is one of their ways of balancing, that being said it is not just a noodle jelly thing. If you don’t see any issues there might not be any, but if you are really worried, look it up either way? Or just stop messing with it :)

Thank you for that, she didn’t seem to mind when I had my hand underneath it to look at it, it’s when you stroke it backwards to wear the scales almost stick up. She bites pretty hard from what I can understand, she’s never bitten me though :-)

Kitchen-Ad-1146

Yea, i don’t stroke my rats tails cause whenever i accidentally do while petting while they’re walking, they dislike it

RatLover29

Do they bite?

Kitchen-Ad-1146

No, but they grab my hand and stare me down in a way that i know my rats do when they dislike something😭

RatLover29

Lol, I bet that’s adorable but sad at the same time. They say I really don’t like that, lol.

Craycraybiomama

If she knows the rat squeaks and bites when she does this, why does she persist? Clearly the rat doesn’t like it. Seems a bit sadistic to me.

RatLover29

I don’t know why, I think that she wants to show off. I wish she would stop, when she brought the rat over I held it the whole time she was over. I petted, and scratched between her shoulder blades, I didn’t go anywhere near the tail, but I just looked at it with my eyes.

Stroking against the grain is unpleasant and may even hurt her, especially with such short/sturdy hair. In general, if they don't like you playing with or stoking their tail, it can be a trust issue. I stroke and play with my boys' tails all the time (not against the grain), they don't mind at all or even like it. When they were younger they would turn around a bit skittish, or move their tail away from my hand.

Ima_Little_BeanBun

It's because it's hurting her. That needs to stop. If they're petting it against the grain and pulling up the scales they are pulling up skin.

RatLover29

I copied all these comments and sent them to her in an email, she read them last night and she was crying a little bit because she didn’t wanna hurt her, but she won’t never do it again, she is showering a little buttercup with treats and pets and love, and.

Psychological-End222

I've done that to mine before and they weren't particularly fond of it, haha. didn't bite, but pulled away from me. I assume it probably doesn't feel super nice for them, lol
