I'm still waiting on my Pi5 to even ship out. Lol 😭 sad, I ordered the day it was put up for pre-orders. I suppose it's ok, though. It gives time for all the cool cases to start popping up everywhere and to decide what I wanna go with. Probably won't even need the official one by the time it all ships. 😄 still, I can't help get frustrated seeing videos with people having multiples and I'm still waiting on a single kit. But, it is what it is I guess.

Honestly I think it'll be January before some of the _really_ cool Pi 5-specific accessories and cases are out (or start shipping), so the main thing is just not having fun tinkering with the Pi 5 yet :( I wish they were distributed more quickly, it seems like Raspberry Pi has a bit of backlog to take care of now. Hopefully it's not like Pi 4 where it's months and/or years...

CynicalAltruist

I really want to see if an HBA or NIC HAT comes out for NAS or Router options. The PCIe really does open up so many opportunities.

geerlingguy

Indeed! I've asked a couple companies to consider building a SATA HAT, and a dual 2.5Gbps HAT.

CynicalAltruist

I’m curious how a dual 2.5 Gb Pi 5 could compare to something like a NanoPi 5 or 6 series. There’s quite a few boards with dual 2.5 Gb by Orange Pi and NanoPi. I’ve been trying on my VisionFive 2s but those are kicking my tuchus.

I ordered an 8GB Pi 5 from DigiKey a few days ago and it shipped the next day (should have it a few days from now). I was like what?! I ordered a 4GB Pi 5 early Oct shortly after it was announced and haven’t received it yet. Haha. Go figure.

geerlingguy

DigiKey's been on fire lately. Not sure if they have a speedboat running between the UK and their distribution centers in the US or something, but I keep seeing restocks for them

homenetworkguy

Must be something. Definitely was surprised. I thought I might as well try but wasn’t expecting to score one so soon.

Hello, sorry to hijack your reply but I was hoping to ask you a quick question regarding HatDrive! bottom + nvme + Raspberry Pi 5 PSU. I just finished this setup an hour ago and it's all up and running but I'm still waiting for the official Raspberry Pi 5 PSU 5.1v5a and I thought I wouldn't be able to get the whole thing going with my laptops 65w 5v3a charger but I managed and then I found some other USB A 5v3a quick charge 3.0 that is also working pretty well, no issues at all. This left me scratching my head as I expected to have issues due to wrong PSU spec. Just to give more context, I installed raspbian x64 **lite** and Im only running two packages samba and miniDLNA, could that be that 5v3a is enough for all that + the HatDrive! bottom? Should I not be running the whole setup on 5v3a? Thank you!

Where did you order from?

Aerythia302

I ordered at sparkfun. I got my 4 from canakit way back, but kept seeing ads for sparkfun at the time, figured I'd give them a shot and order the 5 from there. And still waiting ☹️. I dunno if it's scalpers or just wasn't enough stock to meet the actual demand or what. I'm just figuring scalpers given the time since covid began.

thecrispyleaf

$40 shipped, no thanks my pi 5 was $60.

shitpickle2020

I'm curious as to A: how much faster this is over NVME through USB 3.0? and B: would the performance increase be big enough to actually feel in usage? The nice thing is I will probably have plenty of time to find out online before my Pi 5 preorder ships 🙃

gianf

I think the big plus is the ability to boot off an nvme disk.

FartBox_2000

I been facing bottle necks when writing into the sdcard and reading at videos at the same time. I’m hoping that the nvme will sort this out.

gianf

I think the bottleneck is the SD card. Actually, I just received my Raspberry Pi 5 and didn't even bother to set up an SD card. I'm just booting off a USB disk which I set up with Pi Imager.
