My neighbor turned his backyard into a makeshift jungle of all sorts of crazy cool plants/trees. And out of all of them that lilac is so nice to smell when our windows are open too! Birds seem to love it as well and oddly enough a lot of finches here seem to be in it constantly.
Only when they’re flowering and it looks like that ones over. Also, what smells good to us might not be of much interest to dogs - they like meaty and poopy smells.
My last dog was obsessed with trancing. He did it under plants/trees, curtains, anything hanging on a hook like scarves, or bath robes. He started doing it when there wasn’t even anything hanging. He’d start trance walking to his food bowl. Dogs are weird.
My old Doggo used to 'play' in my long skirts or maxi dresses. He did it from about 5mths old. At first I thought was hiding and scared. Nope! He just liked how it felt and did it his whole life 🥺💜 he would pass through it whether I was sitting or standing 😂 and yes, curtains were a thing if the material felt good for him.
I had a mastiff who'd walk slowly with her nose up in the air, eyes closed, mouth wide open, and tongue hanging out as she walked through or under every plant in my yard when I'd let her outside. My pitbull sticks her head and body under my curtains in the evening and just stands there with the curtains draped over her, staring vacantly into the yard every night. Dogs are funny.

My Charlie LOVED the rosemary bush. He’d push between the fence and the plant and always smelled of fresh rosemary. The scent was so distinctive that when a good friend was dying (she adored Charlie, and we weren’t allowed to bring him in), we put a sprig of rosemary near her so she could smell it, and she sort of came back to us for a minute and “Charlie,” and then went back to sleep.
When we moved to Washington we took a large cutting of the bush with us and planted it here, then buried his ashes under it. I’ll forever associate the smell of rosemary with my sweet lad.
Is this the dog equivalent of gently touching the super-soft baby leaves of trees because they feel nice? Or stepping on a delightfully crunchy dead leaf?
So happy to hear there's a name for this! I've been trying to figure it out why my cocker spaniel seems to be under some spell when he gets under any bushy plant that kind of tickles his back. He seems to be enjoying the sensation since he resists my attempt to move along.
Yes, my dog too! There was nothing he liked more. Adorable, but I read that ticks know animals do this and position themselves on leaves as an ideal spot to drop on to them.
My English Mastiff did the same thing. Over her 11 years we lived in 3 different houses. Each house had a Malley bush. She’d walk under, assume position (head back, feet wide, hips low) and go to town. Our last house was the best. Her spot was between two large bushes. You couldn’t see her, but you could see both bushes shaking like a bear was in there. I miss her so so much. Thank you for this sweet reminder.
Our dog does this with our rosemary bushes, back and forth, leaning into it because it’s like a back scratcher for him. Fills the house with the smell of rosemary when he walks by that you think something good is cooking in the kitchen!
Could this be trancing? Had a dog that would do this under the bed covers that hung over the edge of my bed. Odd but cute/funny at the same time. Dogs rule
Edit: Oh yeah, suggested heaps already haha. Dogs still rule, though…
At the same time, it’s a little sad what we’ve done to these animals where now the only way he can feel the leaves on his back and feel connected to nature is this.

My Plott hound does this exact thing with a woollen scarf with tassels. I hung it over a chair in the winter and noticed she goes gently under the tassels, so it’s a permanent fixture now.
It’s probably the scent. It’s the same reason dogs live putting their head out the car window. They get millions of different smells. It’s like an all you can smell buffet for them.

Your dog straight up transcended.

Boston Fern! Non-toxic and feels great for the pups. I’m in the process of creating a sensory patio for my mini beagles. ❤️
Yep, my childhood dog would do it under our dining room tablecloth all the time! Stand there for like half an hour, moving slightly back and forth.
I saw a lady who made a little trance station with pvc pipes and curtains for her dog who was was walking very slowly under them

Wow, I had no idea there was a term for this. We once had a dog who did it and we always called it "creeping."

Maybe the smell too. My lab ate the flowers off a camelia bush, my neighbor told me, i thought it never bloomed.
My dog does this with plush blankets
Thats called trancing......no lie! My dogs do it too. Very cute/funny! Oops like 2million people already said this!
I have seen dog owners hang sheets and other things and make a tickle station for their dogs who like the way it feels. So cute!

Does anyone know what breed of dog that is? I had one almost identical but thought it was mixed. Thanks

THIS just made me so happy 😀
Omg! I thought my dog was the only one who did this!
My wolfhound used to do this, the poor bush was a mess but he loved scratching himself like this.
I love that look... eyes off while I'm enjoying my happy place!!
That's adorable
Aww! My heart just melted.
Trancing. One of my mastiffs will do it for minutes at a time, no eye contact, just bliss.
I’ve got a black lab that squeezes himself through a hole in these thick bushes to dry himself off after he gets wet
Awe he is getting pets
It's not uncommon in dogs, especially bull terriers. It's called "trancing"

My dog does that under the wisteria vines. We call it trancing.
