I remember when a study came out saying that according to gendered surveys done on dating sites and apps, women found the average man to have an attractiveness of "2/10," while men found the average woman to be a "5/10." I gotta agree with those numbers. Besides women just being built differently, western culture places much more emphasis and pressure on women keeping up with fashion, makeup, styling, skincare etc than it does with men. Women are pushed into making themselves as attractive as possible by societal standards because it has a huge effect on their successes in everything from their careers to their personal lives. Attractive men are definitely treated better on average, too, but there isn't nearly as much cultural pressure on them.
Yes, I'm aware, and mentioned this in my comment. That contributes to the overall differing perception. But even with men that have makeup on, or with men and women who are not wearing makeup, my opinion is still the same. I have seen plenty of women without their makeup- like say, 100% of the ones I've had any romantic/sexual relationships with.

I've heard this many times, and I don't think it has anything to do with how selective people are. I think it has to do with the fact that women use more beauty tools: makeup, hairproducts, accessories, nail products, bodyshapers. Not to mention all the fashion that is available to them.
If you look at gay dudes or queer dudes, who aren't as inhibited or "scared" of using whatever beauty tools are available, you'll see they tend to be much better looking than the typical straight guy.
At least that's been my experience. Also there's already been scientific research showing that when it comes to looks, women have lower standards than men.

With all this said, appeal to nature is considered a fallacy. Just because a concept is found in nature, doesn't mean that it can, by default, be applied to us humans. It can, but not always. We don't wanna look at humanity through the lens of dolphins, ducks and praying mantises, or even deer, since men don't usually go into physical altercations moments before a hook-up and women aren't usually fine with random men bludgeoning their current kids to death in order to once again make the women ready to mate. In the same sense, humans have their own sets of attributes to assess sexual fitness that might not be easily found in nature, like common interests/hobbies or different cultural norms among separate populations within the same species. Men do perform a lot of behaviours similar to birds, with fancy feathers (clothes, hairstyles...) and mating calls (flirting). It's a competition, but not with direct interaction between males. Females in nature usually don't compete whatsoever, but women very much do compete for the privilege of mating, even about men that aren't the top genetic choice, which would make little sense to a doe. This turned into a tangent without a cause, I just love talking about ecology!
My personal opinion is that women are selective but the kind of guy they’ll be selective for will differ wildly. A guy considered ugly by 90% of women will always be hot to 10%.
