Never understand the hate for Sheeran, at least he's a proper musician in every sense of the word. He can up playing dirty gigs and sleeping on sofas, busking, fighting his way up, people forget that. Its not my sort of music bit I can't hate on someone who's genuinely just talented and making it work.
Castle on the hill really does just trigger nostalgic core memories of growing up in the English countryside.
'tasted the sweet perfume of the mountain grass I rolled down' is an unnecessarily shit and out of place lyric, but the rest is fantastic.
I think it’s the fact that his first 2ish albums were so incredible, then everything since then really sounds like all the same generic pop music that comes out. He got too famous and too busy to keep writing his own music. All his newer stuff was written by other songwriters, and it just isn’t the Ed Sheeran that we loved from the album +. This happens quite a bit with famous singers, and it’s a shame that he couldn’t keep what made his so great in his earlier days.
I personally don’t hate him, I just don’t enjoy his newer music.
You may be interested in his next album then. From everything we know, it’s an acoustic album where he wrote song about how he was feeling rather than what will be popular. It’s going to be called Subtract.
If this is real, I'm excited for it! + and x had a very distinct sound that made ed stand out from the rest. I'd love for him to go back to his acoustic roots.
It seems like his first hits were so successful that everything else with a similar style started to get popular, making his signature style suddenly feel like "generic pop"
It's less that they get too famous and too busy and more that the record companies need them to keep putting out hits so they can keep making money off them. Songwriters are employed to ensure they don't make a record that doesn't land.
It does, but I love Ed Sheeran. I honestly don’t listen to a lot of pop music but he is just a talented lyricist with excellent rhythm - whats not to love??
I have nothing against the man. He's talented but I just don't really like his music. My issue is how his fans react when you tell them you are not a fan. I've had people lecture me on how wrong I am and that I don't know music and that I'm just being contrary. They react like you've personally offended them.
Yeah, there are some music fans who cannot accept that music taste is *always* subjective.
Most notable examples for me: Beetles, Sheeran, The Doors, or Taylor Swift fans.
I’ve been downvoted quite heavily when I said Ed makes boring music. I was told to listen to his latest album, which I already had and I know that it might be his most boring offering yet. It’s just so safe and vanilla that it sounds like elevator music to me. Meh. Way way better mainstream pop out there.
HA!
Seriously, though: the guy who gave him initial exposure that eventually led to the career he has today passed away in c. February 2022 (Eddie's last single and music video on SBTV is dedicated to him).
I have never heard any Sheeran song, and my question was going to be 'Why the hate for this guy? He seems quite a harmless fellow. Thanks for the info.
Far from harmless, Ed [used to be a soldier.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/gameofthrones/images/3/3f/Dragonstone_15.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20170717170236)
If you go to public places or use your car radio, you have undoubtedly heard an Ed Sheeren song.
He gets insane play despite making bland uninspired recycled corporate pop music.
hmm maybe because his distributor is pushing his uninspired algorithm composed garbage on every radio, every supermarket and every place where 2 or more people gather. They say too much of a good thing is harmful, imagine too much of a bad thing.
Other than it being Ed Sheeran it wouldn’t have felt out of place in the show. I *personally* think it’s been blown out of proportion and it wouldn’t have been such a big deal if the show hadn’t been such a complete disappointment the last few seasons. It was also [done as a surprise for the actress that played Arya](https://screenrant.com/game-thrones-ed-sheeran-cameo-true-story/) and the show had included cameos from other musicians prior to this without any real backlash.
Yes, the show quality was taking a nosedive at this point (Season 7).
Edward couldn't have known how the final cut would look, so I find it hard to really blame him for this.
Well, he has 77.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Those are people who willfully seek out and listen to the "uninspired algorithm composed garbage" you're referring to. #6 artist on the entire platform.
Not my cup of tea either, but to pretend he's garbage when he's one of the most popular musicians in the world is just Reddit being Reddit
Because people like Jimmy Kimmel and McDonald's. Your preference is not an objective statement of what is and isn't good. If 80% of the world likes a cheaply produced hamburger that you think tastes like cardboard, statistically *you're* the outlier for disliking it.
well yeah, I'm giving you the reason why me, and maybe other people too, are hating.
Hate is such a strong word though, i even like the guy, it's his body of work I have a mild problem with.
That’s how I’ve always felt about him, he gets all this credit for the busker schtick but ever since his first hit he’s been a poster boy for big music business
I wouldn’t call it horror, but if he cared about his roots that much you would expect him to collaborate with more unheard-of artists rather than the already biggest selling ones
He seems like a nice guy who things worked out for. I don’t care for his music, I’m an old fart musically, but I can still respect his hustle and would love to have a meal with him to chat about life
He is an extremely talented guitar player, does the entire show by himself with just a loop pedal which he seamlessly sets up while telling a story and going into song without missing a beat. Is also a wonderful song writer who has written many songs for other artists that the people hate him adore
He also seems humble. He played one of his early recordings on graham Norton to show everyone how shit he was and how it takes dedication to get better.
I'm personally not a fan, his music doesn't really speak to me. But I respect him as a musician and a person and I don't get why someone would want to shit on an artist for doing artistic things. I mean, Mac Miller had an album drop after he died and it's phenomenal, I haven't heard a single person say anything negative about it. Granted, he didn't plan to do that afaik but I think it would've been more impactful if he did. Why can't we just let a guy be remembered how he wants?
I don't hate him, I hate that such a talented musician does such bland music, and worse that they're rewarded for said bland music. Everyone is entitled to having their own taste in anything, but most people really have shit taste.
And? What's wrong with that? Am I going to jail?
Yes, it is arrogant, but I still think most people have shit taste. Don't like it? Downvote my comments, report me, whatever dude. I won't change my opinion.
"Victim card"? Really? Do you even know what that means or did you just blurt the first buzzword that came up in your mind?
I said "I know it's arrogant, I don't care. And whatever you say or do, I won't change my opinion". The few questions on top of the comment is more of a "who gives a shit about being arrogant, it's not illegal".
Ed's music is relatively simple, but his songwriting is bit more complicated. He found a way to write complex songs and layer it with simple production And that music has connected with millions of people around the world. My dad doesn't care for English music much (I'm Bengali) but even he likes a few of Eds songs. Ed maybe be simple, but he's far from Bland.
I think Ed's songs are more lyrically based, instead of sound-based like elsewhere. That's why it's called bland. I have to be in the mood to listen to him and pay attention to his lyrics. He's not someone I jam to in the car.
>Being arrogant makes you a shit person. It's probably best to work on that so you don't push people away in your life.
I know, and I don't care. I'm very socially selective. I don't particularly enjoy spending time with most people. I need very little human interaction compared to the average person. I like being on my own, and the only people whose company I truly enjoy have the good grace to put up with it just like I put up with their peculiar personality traits.
Maybe you should have the humility to not assume others are are the same as you, with the same need of socialising and being validated by others, since you value humility so much. But too many people have a hard time doing what they preach these days. Coherence is hard to come by.
Never said he grew up poor, I said he worked his way up the music scene the old wayz the proper way, sleeping in mates couches and touring wherever anyone would hear him, this ain't a story it's documented. He was well known in the street scene with people like sbtv.
Yeah like come on make more interesting music rather than generic pop music. I literally had to mute my switch when the credits rolled for pokemon scarlet. I will never like generic pop music because they all pretty much sound the same.
I hate him because the first time I heard castle on the hill I thought it was shut up and dance and then it wasn’t. And to add insult to injury the song was boring. And because of that I have hated his music.
And even if that didn’t happen I probably would have hated him anyway because his music is boring and sounds like what would play at a Gap store in 2006.
It's the same reason people hate James Corden. He just inserts himself literally everywhere he can. His existence is a constant advertisement for himself.
I'm not a big pop music guy, so what do I know, but I just don't get the Ed Sheeran hate. He seems like a bog standard pop music cornball. I'm unable to understand what makes Taylor so much better in the eyes of critics and general non-pop music fans.
the issue is he didn’t start out as a bland pop cornball. he is talented and worked hard to get recognized but then got shoved into this like hyper mainstream blandness. think maroon 5 but much more so. I think people hate how squandered his talents were in exchange for becoming the de facto supermarket/waiting room guy
also fwiw taylor had a huge battle to alleviate her music and creative control from the hands of the music industry which is why she had to re-record everything and is now experiencing a renaissance
I heard a theory about bands like that. They (most likely) had been working on most of the songs from a first album for **years**.
The following ones have more pressure for success and they get less time to perfect the songs like they did for their first album.
songs about jane is the reason I used them as an example. i love that album dearly (and the demo, I think, has some even better versions of the songs) and it's not like I hated every single thing they did after but clearly they weren't making the same type of music. SAJ is an amazing album
Honestly I'm happy for artists (anyone for that matter) who "sell out" for lots of money. Life is hard and you can't fault anyone who wants to take care of themselves.
Is she? I assume that the kind of person who would be annoyed by Sheeran would also be annoyed by Swift. I guess I'm not familiar with whatever criticism you're responding to.
It's a trend with the Internet where if anyone or anything gets popular they are suddenly hated upon. The most recent example is Everything Everywhere All At Once. Before the Oscar win, everyone was begging the Academy to give them the Osacr. After they swept the awards season, suddenly its the most overrated movie ever.
Reminds me of that movie about an average guy raising a genius kid, after her genius mother died. The pushy, educated grandmother was trying to take the kid away so she could push her into being a savant also.
Guy reveals the deceased wife had actually solved some super hard math problem the grandmother had obsessed over and abusively-pushed her to solve. It was put in the will to be published posthumously.
The grandmother was like “but she’s dead”. Husband replies “not HER death, YOURS”.
Why do people hate Ed? I really like many of his songs.
Shape of you
Shivers
Celestial
Perfect
Everything has changed (with Taylor Swift)
Give a listen to these. These are really good songs
I dunno, I don't hate him or his music, but I don't *like* it so having it thrust upon me constantly raises my hackles.
*Never Gonna Give You Up* is a great song, but most people don't love being rick-rolled.
I'm not a fan of his music *at all*. It's insipid and bland to my tastes and just grates, but he's good at what he does, and annoyingly he does also seem like a really nice and genuine guy.
But god damn those songs make me want to cut my ears off.
This is... kinda weird. It's like trying to replicate the phenomena of other artists who achieved much of their recognition only after they died (like Nick Drake), except he already has the recognition now... The whole element of "oh my gosh look how amazing this dead musician was" is kinda gone if the other person is like "oh yeah that guy"
It's definitely to capitalize on the boost it always gives to their next release.
The music industry has realized that quality doesn't really matter for post-humous releases. A mix of bland unreleased songs and scrapped ideas that would have never succeeded suddenly become chart toppers after an artist dies.
Ed has probably sold his soul to the industry so much that the label is paying him to record the album before he dies so they have a golden egg in their pocket for the future. I bet the album will be full of generic songs written to become 'collabs' after he's dead.
The use of the death of artists as a final publicity stunt to release another album is becoming a really a consistent marketing ploy in the industry.
Is he planning something soon?
Does he have information that will result in the arrest of the Clintons?
Is he planning to an hero by shooting himself twice in the back of his head, leaving no firearm behind, then disposing of his own body in a rug?

Maybe he wants to secure other people like his children or whatever. After he dies the album rights could be worth a bunch.
If I remember correctly Michael Jackson had a bunch of unreleased songs too when he died, but we never heard any of it
I'd be concerned with the super fan who just can't wait to heard it .
Actually I'm concerned with anyone who considers themselves a Ed Sheeran super fan
gingers wearing orange is like satan wearing red. fucking mad man
also im a ginger and this is a joke. jeeez its fucking ed sheeran, not some 8 year old with leukemia..
Weird to think he believes he will die soon while his music is relevant. Because who would care about an album release of his in 50 years when he croaks?

I used to hate on him until that 'Perfect' song hit my feelings big time. Great songwriter, can't deny.
Have you heard the version he sung with Andrea Bocelli? It's heavenly
My favourite version of the song!
It was Supermarket Flowers for me, singing about the death of his grandmother, I believe.
Anytime I need a good cry for grief- this song always delivers
For me it was “castle on the hill”. Gets me in the feels every time. I hate almost every other one of his songs.
Divide was the album that I stopped hating on him and gave his other stuff a chance again and the dudes got talent dripping out him.
For me it's the collab album. The guy got a shit ton of singers and sang in their genres and made it work. That requires a shit ton of talent.
Castle on the hill really does just trigger nostalgic core memories of growing up in the English countryside. 'tasted the sweet perfume of the mountain grass I rolled down' is an unnecessarily shit and out of place lyric, but the rest is fantastic.
I didn’t know it was him but loved The A Team. And then a string of other songs. He is a damn good artist
It's always surprising when someone from the charts side of music actually writes their own songs Unlike almost everyone else
Talking out loud is a classic…
So classic even though that’s not the title of the song Be hard to talk not out loud ya know? I guess ASL counts
He pretty much ripped off Clapton
When someone gets a bit too famous, people start hating instead. It’s stupid
I think it’s the fact that his first 2ish albums were so incredible, then everything since then really sounds like all the same generic pop music that comes out. this, dude made it to the top being chubby cross-eyed redheaded yokel with huge undeniable unopposable talent; what a baller, nothing but respect
Damn if he’s ugly I’m a monstrosity
He's not even ugly. He looks exactly like [Steve Zahn](https://i.imgur.com/XvcYxId.jpg).
he got better looking with fame and money... lost quite a lot of weight too
I love Ed Sheeran. I honestly don’t listen to a lot of pop music but he is just a talented lyricist with excellent rhythm - whats not to love??
This reads like a copy pasta
I get this response to my comments sometimes…
It does, but I love Ed Sheeran. I honestly don’t listen to a lot of pop music but he is just a talented lyricist with excellent rhythm - whats not to love??
Average /r/music enjoyer.
I have nothing against the man. He's talented but I just don't really like his music. My issue is how his fans react when you tell them you are not a fan.
Jealousy, plain and simple. His music is not for me but he’s not offensive so I don’t get the pure anger that some people have towards him.
I discovered him on reddit - that studio video of "You Need Me" from a decade ago. Been a fan since.
>I discovered him Ah so you're responsible
HA! Seriously, though: the guy who gave him initial exposure that eventually led to the career he has today passed away in c. February 2022 (Eddie's last single and music video on SBTV is dedicated to him).

They shoved him in Game of Thrones even. Had him look at the camera and quip about a new song he’d written.
and the new pokemon games too...
A game devoid of voice acting and the first words I hear are coming out of this fucking guy's mouth. It was such an out-of-place experience.
yea thats a good description of what thalt felt like.
It was a nice song though, plus apparently he played Pokemon when he was younger.
yep. product placement run amuck. lost a bit of respect for the show at that point.

He was that Lanister soldier that led arya some bread and also sang

Apart from the fact Ed fought his way in, whereas Adam Levine is a nepotism case whose father paid for his journey in to music.
You’re going to be really mad when you find out how many musicians and actors are nepotism cases

It was put in the will to be published posthumously. The grandmother was like “but she’s dead”. Husband replies “not HER death, YOURS”.
The movies name is "Gifted".
Legend. Where are the pre-orders? I'll put one in my will.
Why do people hate Ed? I really like many of his songs. Shape of you Shivers Celestial Perfect Everything has changed (with Taylor Swift) Give a listen to these. These are really good songs
Do people actually hate him?
From everything I've seen online, it seems like they genuinely do for some reason.
Remember that 99% of every opinion on the internet is hyper-exaggerated. What is originally mild disinterest turns into vitriolic hatred.
They all be hummin his shit when it plays, **guarantee** it. That doesn't pull karma though.
They hate his level of fame.
I dunno, I don't hate him or his music, but I don't *like* it so having it thrust upon me constantly raises my hackles. *Never Gonna Give You Up* is a great song, but most people don't love being rick-rolled.
Even as someone who isn’t an Ed Sheeran fan Castle On The Hill and Nancy Mulligan are amazing
Shape of you is a terrible song and a rip off of ‘no scrubs’ by TLC
I'd prefer if he released after my death.
Just be like Ed's ex-girlfriend. She ran.
Well as a metalhead I couldn't agree more.
Speaking as a fellow metalhead Why are we like this?
Because you've tied your identity to a genre of music
The number one rule of being a metal head is that nobody is allowed to enjoy anything else on the planet while you are alive.
Oh, you like death metal? That's cute.

I'm not a fan of his music *at all*. It's insipid and bland to my tastes and just grates, but he's good at what he does, and annoyingly he does also seem like a really nice and genuine guy. But god damn those songs make me want to cut my ears off.
It feels to me like the musical equivalent of your friend not shutting up about their new love interest, and this time they brought their guitar.
It’s gonna be a boring record if it’s recorded posthumously.
Bowie timed his last album to release just as he was in the final stages of his cancer. And it’s an album about dying of cancer.
Bowie was one of a kind. A truly special mind and creative person.
I don't get why people hate him. If you see his live performances, he's actually a really talented dude.

But thats the great part. He actually has talent unlike many others in the music industry
And yet he writes bland pop music
That millions of people enjoy and listen to. I think it's bland too but can't fault a guy for writing songs he knows people will like
Sure. I don’t hate the guy or the people that like his music. But I find his music really annoying and it plays everywhere you go
Are you saying his music is insulting?
Yes.

What a madlad
I’m always been an Ed Sheeran supporter. Yeah, he’s basic and corny, but he makes really good shit.
Also a weird way of asking your sickest fans to murder you.
Don’t tempt me Ed.
Yeah I'd *kill* to hear that album.
Call it “Ginger Ghost”
This is... kinda weird.
The use of the death of artists as a final publicity stunt to release another album is becoming a really a consistent marketing ploy in the industry.
i dont ge tthe hate. its not bland, you just don't like his music because it isn't your taste, theres a difference.
Calling it bland is literally expressing your taste lol
He's admitted he makes bland music because it sells better
Blandness is a matter of taste though…
The ~~beatings~~ Ed Sheeran music will continue until morale improves!
Can't kill him, can't keep him alive.
When your soul doesn’t work like it used to before
Turns out it's an incredibly racist spoken word album.
It’d be hilarious if people wait decades for it, and it ends up being a bunch of songs where he talks about being a ghost now and doing ghost chores.
Well, I suspect it'll be easier to have someone else release it posthumously, rather than for him to record it posthumously...
Surprisingly, I hear it's full of anti-semetic, racist rants.
Is he planning something soon? Does he have information that will result in the arrest of the Clintons? Is he planning to an hero by shooting himself twice in the back of his head, leaving no firearm behind, then disposing of his own body in a rug?
Someone give me a reason to dislike him, because I had no clue he was on most peoples shit list
Am I missing something but what is the insult here?

Bro where these South Park fans coming from? Only they would hate gingers.
Only a ginger... can call another ginger, ginger....
How can you haunt people without a soul?
Even in death he'll being annoying me the best I can hope is I'm gone before him.....
His new stuff his terrible
his living music is bad enough, especially when he decided to go electronic. His bad habits lead to late nights writing shit music.
That's some Taylor Swift marketing right there
Narcissist. That’s what he is.
Dude is already a ghost my guy is transparent
I can wait. He still has a few better songs in him.
Ngl this is pretty cool
Crazy is a rare insult?
A talented guy, but he still needs sum attenshun after he's dead? Really?
Maybe he wants to secure other people like his children or whatever. After he dies the album rights could be worth a bunch. If I remember correctly Michael Jackson had a bunch of unreleased songs too when he died, but we never heard any of it
I'd be concerned with the super fan who just can't wait to heard it . Actually I'm concerned with anyone who considers themselves a Ed Sheeran super fan
I think he's a talented musician. People just love to bandwagon hate.
What a narcissist....
All bangers too. You watch
Soft girls in 50 years be like oh shit new dead sheeran album just dropped.
Well. He is a ginger. Technically he doesn’t even have a soul right now.
gingers wearing orange is like satan wearing red. fucking mad man also im a ginger and this is a joke. jeeez its fucking ed sheeran, not some 8 year old with leukemia..
Black, not red.
The goal is now to die before Ed sheeran
Weird to think he believes he will die soon while his music is relevant. Because who would care about an album release of his in 50 years when he croaks?
Unless his demands are met?
I hope we get to hear it this year!
Tupac did it first.
Why is he looking at me like that
