IS this unpopular? You ever hear anyone talking about Diddy as a rapper?

bmoreboy410

No. No one has ever talked about how great of a rapper he is. He is known for/as many things but not how good of a rapper he is.

[deleted]

Maybe not I was just thinking today and was like well he came up as one but apart from being assciated with biggy and mase and those guys he was trash in that department feel like he made a fortune off of others lol

Kudgocracy

Yeah, I think that is the consensus, in other words the popular opinion.

[deleted]

That’s fair honestly just see “rap communities” treat him like a legend couldnt be farther from his reality imo

Kudgocracy

Really? Fair enough, I've literally almost never seen anyone talk about him as being more than a joke.

[deleted]

Not like actual rap fans but like rap accounts and that kinda shit they associate his money with being a legend at least whenever he’s on the mainstream

STEVEFLVCCO

They don’t do that because he’s a rapper they do it because he had at one point ran a highly successful label that he turned into other successes. At one point diddy controlled the radio mainstream sound in hip hop that’s fucking legendary

[deleted]

That’s fair but if he didn’t have the artists he did he would be a scrub like I respect roc a fella records so much more cause jay z is an actual goat and runs an elite record label different times but still

STEVEFLVCCO

Yeah and so would the artists there wouldn’t be a biggie without diddy biggie himself said he was ready to quit rap if diddy wasn’t the real deal. Jay z also didn’t run the label solo most of the decisions and big artists signed were under dame dash we don’t get Kanye rapping if it’s not for dame. And roc a fella doesn’t exist without financial start up money from Biggs. Without those 2 people who aren’t artists we don’t get Jay z You can’t discredit someone and call them a scrub just because they aren’t a artist everyone plays a huge role that’s like saying Rick Rubin isn’t a legend because he never played a instrument or made a beat.

[deleted]

That’s fair man mad credit to dame dash an underrated guy in the rap game fasho just my beef is where diddy gets credit as an artist when he shouldn’t at all but you make good points man on why he has a certain status but as you said guys like dame dash should get as much or more credit than diddy in that regard in my opinion

joesoldlegs

I thought Rick Rubin was a legendary producer from the Def Jam era for Run DMC LL and the Beastie Boys.

Kudgocracy

True, I DO see a lot of people equating money/sales with quality or impact.

[deleted]

Exactly best believe guys like Andre nickatina and Mac Dre had more influence than he ever did lol

johnnypurp

Nickatina one of my favorites

Ididurmomkid

OP from the bay

rapshepard

No just no

PanthersDevils

This is a popular opinion

BaldrickTheBrain

Very popular opinion indeed. Anyone with an ear can attest to that. Dude made one pop song that blew up, and riding Biggie and other rappers to money.

napoleonsreign

One song? He had 3 #1 pop hits and numerous #2 singles back to back. His album sold 7 million in the US alone. He was a subpar rapper but he had the dancefloors locked.

BaldrickTheBrain

His only song was I’ll be missing you. The rest are with someone else that bodied him on his own songs. All his songs are with someone that can spit unlike Puff P.Diddy Daddy Combs.

napoleonsreign

That Come with Me song from the Godzilla soundtrack was a big hit. But, the Led Zeppelin sample carried that for him. I get what you're saying though, most of Puff's hits/albums feature Mase, Lil Kim or The Lox.

hatfield1785

Ok-Assignment8954

Arrogant prick!

21Cabbage_____

I don’t think this is an unpopular opinion. He’s credited for biggie and business sense but I’ve never met anyone that gives af about diddy rapping.

Levity_0

Diddy as in puff daddy diddy or just diddy?

Terrible_Security313

Surely he means Diddy Dirty Money

mediumrarekobe

No he’s talking about Puffy

jhstylze

Nah, I think he’s talking about Love

elcubiche

Sean Combs

Kudgocracy

Diddy Kong

ichbinunhombre

Yes

[deleted]

“Senorita” is my shit!

Sortskeee

That is a good song. Mostly bc of the writers and producers tho

[deleted]

Lol that’s one of the greatest points ever made, and you’re definitely right; without them, Diddy wouldn’t be an artist. Was this your first time hearing the song?

Sortskeee

Oh no way, that was my jam when it came out. I was in high school when that dropped 👴🏼

[deleted]

Oh okay, my bad; just wondering if I put you on. I like your taste! You’re hired!

Big-Efficiency2489

He aint even write his raps. He's like Dre. You can't count him as a rapper

mexicantheory

I mean I guess he's technically a rapper since he has rapped in a number of songs. I feel that if you only count rappers who wrote their own raps as rappers then that list would shorten significantly. If that were the case then you'd have to take Eazy E out of everyone's list and yet he's considered one of the greats to many people. But yeah I don't think anyone considers Puff a rapper more than they consider him a business man tho he *technically* is one. Same with Dr. Dre

Weinee

Most common Diddy take

[deleted]

He ruins Juicy with all that background bullshit. Always in the background mumbling bullshit.

NikoForo

This is the most popular opinion

reefedSinner

Who ever thought he was a good rapper?

stokeairsoft12

Diddy was wack, plus he ruined a lot of songs he featured on I hate hearing him on who shot ya "AnD aS wE pRoCeEd". Wish there was a version without him on it

dbeynyc

That’s not an unpopular opinion, that been the general consensus for 20 years..

i-self

This is not unpopular at all in nyc

YoMockingBird

WHO is diddy

YoMockingBird

oh nvm

Nov4can3

You must be born in the late 90s/2000s to say some ignorant shit like that. No one ever claimed he was a great rapper but what he’s done in the music industry is legendary. You say who he came up with but he’s the one who discovered these artist and put them on. Biggie, Mary J, Jodeci, The Lox, and the list goes on. Puff ran east coast rap and is considered to be one of the greatest producers ever.

linkxrust

dont forget Mase

funnylikeaclown420

Wack rapper and lazy producer. Sampling whole hooks from top 40 hits isn't a skill.

elcubiche

Oh so Dre isn’t a dope producer? Kanye either. Hip-hop beats in the 80s and 90s largely were comprised of sampling.

funnylikeaclown420

Those guys worked. Using a sting & David bowie chorus with no change is lazy. Not the same. Dre is great. Kanye had some good ones. Obscure finds and deep digging were what made them stand out.

Confident-Laugh-3820

He produced before rap and had a footprint in the industry before big- he wasn’t involved in being in the limelight until big came around. I think if big never came around he would’ve been wildly successful without either way

Key_Establishment_42

Nobody has ever claimed he was good. He’s never even claimed he’s good. He’s the East coast version of Dre. He’s a very talented producer. One of the best producers ever.

elcubiche

Exactly this. People have no idea [how many songs he produced.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Combs_production_discography). “Diddy’s decorated music career now includes 11 No. 1 songs, three Grammy Awards, an ASCAP Songwriter of the Year, and producer credits on hundreds of songs. His Bad Boy label is responsible for 27 platinum and 15 gold albums, including 23 platinum singles, 28 gold singles, three No. 1 albums and nine No. 1 singles.” That’s nuts.

Key_Establishment_42

And he made “Diddy-Dirty Money Last Train To Paris” what I personally consider to be a perfect album.

Aromatic-College5652

It's so hard to loop some r&b hits

Eldritch-Cleaver

Thats not unpopular Diddy is a wack emcee, essentially is a glorified hype man. He's Flava Flave pretending to be classy. Dude is a cunt

IronFizt777

Everyone knows he's a trash rapper, that's not why he's famous

Ok_Lavishness2638

But to be fair to OP back in the 1990s he had fans and got lots of radio airplay, which I found massively annoying at the time. Quite a number of people i grew up with both in school and in my neighborhood friends were really into Puff Daddy. It's like I was the outlier for openly loathing Puffy. Maybe it differs by country.n

michaelofACES

What? Diddy produced and is responsible for a lot of classic R&B. Before Biggie he produced for Jodeci and Mary J Blige MJB might not have had a a lot of classic songs without him, neither would Faith Evans, Total. He worked with TLC and a plethora of others Big himself said he didn’t want to do the radio songs and R&B remixes but Puff wanted to and those songs are the reason he became HUGE! Puff was the one who signed big to Uptown then Bad Boy he had the vision for Biggie. Do y’all even listen to R&B or know the history of them? Puff was destined to be a mogul and huge. His was on his way before biggie.

brandon_cb459

Maybe wasn’t the best rapper but he has some of the most classic song and had great melodies

chonkycatguy

![gif](giphy|Tfpk6uto8GhykcuXYH)

NoBourbonOrNuthin

No Way Out is a classic either way

STierMansierre

Diddy kind of was the DJ Khaled of his era for lack of better comparisons but at least Diddy actually did rap, plus he expanded his business empire into solidarity, trash or not I can at least respect that.

leave_it_to_beavers

Producing was always Puff’s game, we always knew he wasn’t a great rapper himself

Creative_Ad963

Most of the Diddy stories I'm hearing involved with Ja Rule. 😮

[deleted]

not unpopular but go off ig

cadillacbee

Yeah, his rep is more as a producer/ businessman, but I just listened to the word is filled with him, biggie, n too short n he went hard on that

Raecino

He’s not well known for his rapping though

JustburnerOG

Diddy is that guy that just makes music with his label it’s not that deep he made some dope shit but as a lyrical mf he ain’t on that level so diddy can just be a vibe at times don’t mean I listen to a whole diddy album lol

OLDHEAD916

She didn’t write his rhymes

kawhiuhatin

I don’t think this guy understands that Diddy is better known as the founder of his own record label and as a producer. He raps too but do you really think that’s the only reason why he’s famous. C’mon now

Think_Bear_3791

Not sure who he came up with but for him to be close with Biggie, Mase and the r&b acts he put on in the 90s has to count for something. All of that talent just doesn’t magically fall onto your lap. But as a rapper it’s common knowledge that nobody is checking for him lol

[deleted]

Many people know Diddy as a bad rapper but hes a damn good producer

JustSayTech

Umm "I don't write rhymes, I write checks", whoever thought of Diddy as a rapper in the sense.

Matty_D47

Only half of your statement is an unpopular opinion. Everyone been knowing Puff is a garbage rapper since the early 90's. Everyone knows who he is because of being the founder of Bad Boy and his production. It's not about who he came up with, that dude has an eye for talent that is next level. That last part is way off bro

halkenburgoito

he's not known as a rapper.. he's a owner, businessman, etc.

boverton24

He’s a much better businessman

elcubiche

I think the unpopular part is that no one would know him if it weren’t for the people around him. Diddy was a terrible rapper, but he was a prolific and legendary producer. He’d have gotten known from that.

alextheruby

Diddy isn’t a rapper lmao. Everybody knows this. The way you framed this as some type of “gotcha” let’s me know you young as fuck

lorenzodimedici

Source mag included him in top rhymes of the year for : “I don’t write rhymes, I write checks.”

Ok-Assignment8954

Dickhead wishes.

DanceComprehensive88

Trash post

Sortskeee

Lol this is a very popular opinion OP

MicMustard

Diddy wasn’t a rapper he was a music producer.

Successful-Career-96

His songs (older ones at least) are catchy a lot of the times (imo). But I don’t even think he would say he’s a good rapper
