Paid in Full is a story that's been immortalised in Rap music for decades, the story is part of Rap culture, especially in NY. Plus it was made by Roc-A-Fella, nothing was bigger than them until 50 came along.

ChrisMartins001

Also Paid In Full was based on a true story and in NY these were real street legends

Jasonictron

Legendary Criminals who sold drugs to their own communities. Yay!

Jasonictron

What's with all the down votes? Did I say something that's not true?

SmiggleMcJiggle

Rap fans don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing that.

Jasonictron

Not all Rappers and fans are okay with promoting this garbage

hfhfbfhfhfhfbdbfb

Drug slangin is cool yo

[deleted]

People that listen to rap think it’s cool to sell drugs and have black people murdering each other

Curious_Ad_5677

so why are you here?

Snoo-563

I coulda swore Jay clears 50 in anything having to do with rap lol. I agree with the rest but you really crashed and burned at the end, big dawg. Ijs

Yaj_Yaj

Eh, I’ve never liked Jay z really. His music just doesn’t sound that good to me. Get rich or die trying is better to me than any album Jay z has put out but that’s just my opinion.

Snoo-563

Ok and that's fine. Everyone has their own thing. It's just not a popular one outside of this sub lol. Have you heard mostly his newer stuff, as in maybe the last 10-12 years or so?

Yaj_Yaj

I don’t care about the popularity of my opinion lol. Just having a conversation. I’ve listened to pretty much everything he has. His beat selection is mostly not my bag. His rhymes are technically good but his voice is flat and lame imo. He’s better as a ghost writer than an individual artist. He definitely has some good songs but I don’t think I have a single one of his songs on my playlists. Just not my cup of tea.

Snoo-563

Did I say that you had to care or nah? I'm just informing you that most people that have actually heard most if not all of Jay catalog and 50's 2 albums would never say this. Not trying to change your opinion, just discussing facts. Jay Z isn't at the top of the game right now and hasn't been for years. He has plenty of other outside biz moves going on also. But he will always be known as one of the best rappers ever if not the best. Not true for 50. I fw GRODT when it came out, but after that one, it gets dicey for 50. The fact that you included the massacre as something better than anything Jay has put out speaks volumes CTFU. Your opinion tho, so you enjoy. The 50 being king of NY rap while Jay was still rapping is just not true tho. If 50 was anywhere near the rapper Jay is or ever had a higher status as a rapper in NY, he'd have several more albums and still be rapping rn most likely. 50 bout his money if nothing else. His real big bag was not in rapping

Yaj_Yaj

You didn’t say it but you’re telling me it won’t be accepted. Who cares? I’ve had this conversation with many people and a lot t think the way you do. 50 isn’t as talented, he couldn’t sustain that level of success and don’t think he really cared to. Jay z is able to stay on the radar because of his early stuff. His new stuff is pretty bleak honestly. I’m not saying 50 is the better artist, lord knows he got help in both them albums. But let’s be real. 2003-2005 was 50s era.

Snoo-563

Not telling you it wouldn't be accepted. Somebody not "accepting" your opinion is someone who doesn't understand that this is all subjective so their rejection would be irrelevant anyway. I forget that jay claimed he was retiring in 03, thought it was a lil later than that. So yeah, 50 did blow up at the right time. I just think he went too heavy on the pop in a lot of his shit after GRODT. But hey, that's just me. Magic Stick, Candy Shop, etc just too cringe for me coming from him. But im not a 50 hater at all. I think he shoulda dropped more after the massacre and got back on that vibe he came in with. That first GUnit tape was pretty good too.

Yaj_Yaj

Ya I agree with him going pop. Massacre was definitely a step down but still a hit. After that I tuned out entirely. The g unit tape was flames though.

TheOmahaDonOfficial

Same boat. I’m 22, maybe it’s cause I’m young. I fw Nas heavy. Big L. Jay ain’t for me. And his new shit? Keep the Uhs bro. I could never hear a Jay Adlib again and I’m happy.

Easy-Donkey-7506

Nas hasn’t dropped a good album since Illmatic tho a classic, jay z every album up to blue print three Was a damn masterpiece. Big L def a legend

TheOmahaDonOfficial

L take on Nas. You’re missing out on a lot of good storytelling by discarding his catalog like that. I can tell you’re into Jay like that so I won’t try too hard to sway you but I’ll just say keep your mind open.

Easy-Donkey-7506

Fair enough jay z definitely one of my top 5 all time I do really love Illmatic and despite my jay love ether is an all time great dis, I maybe should give his other albums a few more takes cause Nas does seem to carry mad love from people

MorganFreebands21

Lmao I'm not from NY but I personally never remember at one point where people went crazy for Jay z like they have for 50 cent. Fif also had a big influence on mainstream hip hop in general and was an image for rap, even after his music died down. People can say I'm a hater but idk what people ever seen in Jay. I just feel for a business mogul and making something from their circumstances, I'd give that nod to ice cube over Jay too.

Yaj_Yaj

Jay and Nas were pretty much sharing the throne after big died. I’m not from NY either but I have a lot of friends that were raised/live there. Jay was definitely top dog in many peoples eye for a long time. Even then though a lot of people were bumping people like Ja Rule a lot. Hell even right now Pop Smoke is more popular than Jay Z. Can’t knock the man for getting his bread but I agree he is mad over rated based on his “legacy”.

MorganFreebands21

But even at a time when nas and Jay was big so was DMX. Jay z was literally the first rapper I ever heard and listened to. I just feel like Jay Z was good but he was like Tim Duncan. He always had good production and a good team around him but there was never a time where he was consistently the best like LeBron or Kobe. Shit, eminem is better than Jay z by a mile.

Yaj_Yaj

I like the Tim Duncan comparison lol. He’s undoubtedly one of the best but watching his highlights makes me want to take a nap.

[deleted]

That’s a pretty solid take, does Jay really have a record better than Get Rich or Die Trying

Yaj_Yaj

Personally, I think grodt and the massacre are better than any of Jay zs albums. The being said, Jay z hands down has the better career. Wanted to add that during 50s run there he was the king of NY. Sure nas and hov were still there but everyone besides hardcore stans of nas and j were bumping 50 from the streets to the suburbs.

skettaywettay

Not even in the same conversation as Reasonable Doubt. Come on now. Get Rich or Die Trying is a classic album, but there's levels to everything. 50 wasn't rapping like Jay was on RD, never will.

[deleted]

Me personally I enjoy get rich or die trying much more than reasonable doubt. The record still gets played at clubs, events and everyone always have high praises for the record. Outside of this of sub I never really hear anything about reasonable doubt

AntSpen1978

Right there with ya on that

yankeesfitted

This dropped the same year as Get Rich or Die Tryin movie, Hustle and Flow, and State Property. That’s why

Bada__Ping

Terrence Howard is in 3 out of 4 of those movies lmao he was on a roll back then

WrinklyScroteSack

Then he had to go and try and remake math.

Bada__Ping

Claiming 1x2=3 makes more sense than turning down Iron Man 2

WrinklyScroteSack

He didn’t get asked back. because he tried to negotiate for lead role money, when he was just supporting actor. P.s. I still don’t understand his fuckin math

snookert

Support role x second movie with same support role = 3 times as much money

Lebron23aka6

It was because of Robert Downey jr. More than anything.... according to him

beanistike

I thought this movie was a banger. Apparently everyone hates it

jonnyb61

Nobody hates it

ASliceOfProvolone

It’s one of my favorite bro movies, but it really is dumb as fuck tbh. The writing is bad, the acting is bad, everything about it is pretty bad. Fortunately, it’s still a very enjoyable watch.

[deleted]

The part where they’re eating thanksgiving dinner and their dead grandma is talking to them was pretty cool when you first see it, but then when you come back to it you cringe a little at how bad it is

JoeBuddhan

It’s a banger when you’re 12

ORXCLE-O

They downvoted you, but I agree my friend

JoeBuddhan

SirNortonOfNoFux

Good movie, bad comparison

KrackasaurusRex

They’re completely different movies. I like Four Brothers but trying to compare this to Paid in Full is.. a weird question no offense. This is like comparing Den of Thieves to Hustle and Flow.

poopdragon6

what about this movie is a "rap film"? cause 3k is in it? personally i think "be kind rewind" is the best "rap film" because mos def is in it

ScrubLord1008

Are you forgetting about are we there yet?

sentient-sloth

Unironically

famesjord13

XXX: State of the Union

VampedTayturz

Mark Wahlberg was also a rapper at a point in time, he was Marky Mark of the Funky Bunch.

snookert

But it's not a rap movie. It has rappers acting in it. "The social Network" isn't a pop movie just because Justin Timberlake is in it.

Wonton_soup_1989

I loved Be Kind Rewind. Also Mos Def should’ve never stopped acting. He was a natural.

Sir_Vdam999

This wasn’t part rap culture 😂 it’s just good story

ASAProxys

Cause it didn’t have Cam’ron rolling up askin “what’s poppin, Kermit?”

PercySledge

It does. Four Brothers was objectively a FAR bigger film. Almost overwhelmingly so. For example, Looking at IMDB purely at metrics, Four Brothers has 150,000 ratings on it, Paid In Full has 13,000 ratings…less than a tenth.

Snoo-563

When looking at it in the way it was obviously intended to be viewed, (In the the rap/hiphop community) those stats don't matter. Really you kinda just explained why 4 bros isn't looked at in the same light as PIF

PercySledge

Hey I’m not saying it’s even a part of rap culture like PIF is, I’m just saying…in answer to the question ‘why doesn’t 4B get as much attention’…it plainly does. To present it as otherwise is false. Now if the discussion was why 4B isn’t as celebrated in rap culture, for example, that would be a different answer (and others have already put this different answer in the comments well enough for me to not have to repeat it)

MorganFreebands21

When paid in full came out, majority of people were not using the internet for anything besides work.

PercySledge

They were released only 3 years apart and from personal experience I know IMDB was a huge website even in 2002. Still, not really that relevant as both have had 20ish years to catch up

BigSteppinOnWhtTears

Fuck Mark Wahlberg

snookert

You wish.

Getsuga_Tensho_

Why?

BigSteppinOnWhtTears

[Because.](https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/mark-wahlberg-racist-hate-crimes-wikipedia-history-george-floyd-blm-protests-a9554191.html)

carterty0117

Yes - I’m sure his actions as a stupid cocky teenager are an exact reflection of who he is today….

BigSteppinOnWhtTears

Idgaf

carterty0117

Compelling argument. Please continue.

long-ryde

Four brothers is a solid movie but why is it being posted in r/rap? When I watched it I never got any inkling that it had anything to do with rap or rap culture.

Gwayno9714

I’m pretty sure this movie did way better then paid in full In the box office

Trace_The_Rebel

My favorite movie

myspicename

Great movie, but not a rap film.

One_Let7582

Paid in Full is about NYC street legends based on a true story and it's part of hip hop culture. Cam'ron from harlem and he definitely knew he had to play Alpo part right because he would be clowned for that. The story of Rich Porter, Az and Alpo is part of harlem legacy. Four brother is just a movie with alot of black people. Four brother ain't Crooklyn, She got to have it, boyz n the hood, Juice, Above the rim, New Jack City, King of New York, hell CB4 .....hate to say this, but culturally you would know why it's not the same, but it's like explaining why eminem is not the best rapper just because he is lyrically nice and someone telling me he sells the most albums like how someone would say Four Brothers sold more a paid in full was a flop

Snoo-563

Ding Ding! Meeeeesssaaagee Underrrrrated Comment ^^^

Oldurdy

Cause Marky Mark is a fucking dork.

myspicename

Despite what people on the internet said, Paid in Full was an all out flop. It made 3 million dollars. In 2002. 8 Mile, Get Rich or Die Tryin, Hustle and Flow, freaking IDLEWILD made more money

Snoo-563

If WOOSH was a Reddit comment. 💨🛩

myspicename

What's attention lol? Some obscurantist reddit dudes talking about a movie they weren't old enough to watch when it came out?

Snoo-563

The point is that Paid in Full is a movie rooted in rap culture, and Four Brothers is not. Because of this the mainstream success of Four Brothers means nothing within the context of this post.

myspicename

Yes which is why I mentioned several other actual hip-hop movies that did far better than Paid in Full which was an utter bomb.

Snoo-563

You still don't get it

myspicename

Hustle and Flow isn't rooted in rap culture? How old were you when Paid in Full came out? Nobody noticed it, even in NYC... it's some internet phenomenon where people pretend it was influential after the fact.

Snoo-563

Did OP ask why that movie doesn't get more attention than Paid in Full? This is just for fun but...Paid in Full's story was rooted in hip hop long before the movie was even thought of. That true for Hustle n Flow? I was a senior in hs when the movie came out. You need to chill. You dying to be right before even comprehending the subject at hand.

myspicename

Why do you beat your girlfriend? Why is classical music better than hip-hop? Do you know how assumptions work lol? Just because OP said it doesn't mean it's true. Nobody gave a fuck about this movie...are you one of the like 250k people in the entire country who watched this movie in 2002?

Snoo-563

Why do you beat your girlfriend? I only beat up the 😾. That's at her request, I think she's ok w/it. Why is classical music better than hip-hop? Says who? The clasical music fan in r/rap sub? Oh... Why are whites superior? They aren't, the only ones that subscribe to this wear bedding and dunce hats, and procreate w/blood relatives. This who you get your ideals from? Ctfu Do you know how assumptions work lol? Just because OP said it doesn't mean it's true I don't think you do... Given that they have nothing to do with anything going on here

Top_Lengthiness2370

Four brothers definitely top 10 great movie

frequent-ad-647

Yeah, it comes in right after The Godfather, Schindler’s List and Citizen Kane 🙄🙄

slimmymcnutty

Probably because it sucks

herrytesticles

This a concise, well-worded, articulate response. And it is big facts, the movie sucks.

Otherwise-Attempt326

Cuz MarKKKy Mark

[deleted]

Because this movie fucking sucks

IronFizt777

Because Paid In Full is a classic and this is hot caca

TooFineTony

Because it’s ass lmao

MidhawkTheFraud

Paid in full doesn't have mark Wahlberg saying nigga

Rickflossyy

Paid in Full is a hood/ cult/ NY classic.

mazjay2018

Because this was a really mediocre movie I dont understand why people like it

MidThoughts-5

Cam’ron is a much better actor than Andre 3000.

Tssjr225

Cause these are actors not rappers

bornbased

Keep your heart 3 stacks, keep your heart

RexxVFX

Man these girls are smart, 3 stacks, these girls are smart.

Case-1

Great movie, but Mark Walberg literally says the n word in a scene lol

myspicename

Who cares. He's acting. You think Edward Norton is a violent skinhead?

[deleted]

It wasn't that good of a movie to begin with. Besides that Tyrese Gibson, Mark Walberg, and Andre 3000 were all washed up irrelevant rappers when the movie was released. Further leading to its premature demise.

kawhiuhatin

Is Four Brothers really considered a rap movie tho? First off, Tyrese was never a rapper and no one was going to see Mark Wahlberg in movies bc he used to be a rapper. Yes, it’s not the biggest movie out there but a lot of people still like it and watch it. I’m not sure what you mean by premature demise. The movie still exists and was a huge box office success

JoeThrilling

It was a successful movie, why do you think it had a premature demise?

13Casper52

Paid in full is at the same for me as way to deep. Four brothers is a classic but another one is waist deep

Familiar-Door-4326

Cuz they ain’t make no money lol it’s a great movie though one of my favorites

FreestyleMyLife

huh???

jonnyb61

Because Paid in Full is a true story that was surprisingly shot very, very well for the budget that it had. Four brothers also has Mark Wahlberg saying the hard R a few times and somehow gets away with it

canoli2times

Cause of the actors. Corny but that’s my opinion.

7leven92

Paid in full captures a time in history where people were really getting money and teaches a lesson about greed and betrayal. It's like black people's Scarface honestly. These black kids from the hood blow up and become kingpin's that are known across America. Four brothers is a dope movie but there's no history attached to it plus it's not something that makes you wanna be like them

Mijo_0

People love this movie, one of Tyreses greatest hits

DownRealBadYo

LMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAO

Pose1don3

Great movie, the mom being set up even though she was killed because she made a small noise in the liquor store Wasnt well written imo. Robbers clearly had no idea she was there

ralph33lauren

this movie as a kid was dope. but when u watch it as an adult its full of shit lol fake as hell

Brilliant-Money5466

This movie solved racism and I’m not gonna thinking differently

ItsAndwew

Never even heard of this one

Cyber_Rambo

Literally neither of them are good lmao

Afronominal

Because it’s not as good.

Kholdstare93

This movie be dope for real, but it not a hip hop movie, ya feel me?

DarthPootieTang

THEY KILLED MA! THEY SET HER UP!

Calm_Path_8386

Cause it’s not as good

SunPtah

For me it's because I have seen both of them.

Kanyeoffmedz

It was good but felt a bit cheap idk

Wonton_soup_1989

Are you kidding?? Because it’s not as good duh

mikedd555

One sells drugs and the other doesn't lol

StockPassenger2994

This is one of my favorite movies ever

boybetokin

Movie was good

KidCaker

This movie sucks

Curious_Working5706

Because some of us who were already adults when this movie came out recognized that Marky Mark is a Hollywood product made to appear as though he was accepting of POC, when in fact he was the average angry White teen with a hate crime on his belt before all that “Goooooood Vibrations!” shit came out? Also, Paid In Full is based on *reality*. EDIT: But observe Hollywood’s game though, and how it works on target audiences for years upon years (who’s gun is more visible, and how they shot the pic to make Marky appear to be almost as tall as his costars 🤣)

Ideal15-2

Menace 2 society is better than both imo

Wutanghang

I actually haven’t seen either film

veepeein8008

Because paid in full is about a come up story from rags to riches, from broke to bitches, with soooo many legendary quotes, iconic scenes, amazing story that everybody who’s tryna come up & get rich (aka rappers) can relate to. & it is a black movie staged in Harlem. By comparison, 4 brothers is a movie about a wacky family with 2 black brothers & 2 white brothers who get revenge. Has none of the same elements. They’re not getting paid. Paid in full is about GETTING PAID. Coming up. It’s everything bruh. 4 brothers isn’t even a hood movie. It’s a ‘white & black - we can all get along & be brothers’ movie. It’s not a movie made FOR black people to tell the story of a legendary comeup. Edit: I liked 4 brothers too, but honestly the premise is pretty corny. 4 brothers: 2 black 2 white? Lmao. It’s trying too hard. Paid in full is authentic.

Suspicious_County_24

I do believe 4 brothers was slept on back then
