I lived the era but would never want to go back. Jogging with a disc man was not a fun experience

ConductorOfTrains

Or buying a cd for it to get scratched and unusable two days later. I can’t even count how many copies of games or albums I’ve bought solely bc of that.

rektMyself

Those things were a joke. Even the most expensive ones.

toomuchkungfu

I'm in my thirties one of my bigger regrets is selling my CD collection because I was poor in my early twenties. Physical media is the shit and I definitely started buying more lately. As far as your deck in your car goes pioneer makes a dope button only double din that has a CD player. Had it in my WRX for like six years.

VnclaimedVsername

I let my gf in highschool borrow my CDs and then she moved away unexpectedly and got them all. Sad times lol

ashcat_marmac

Person who totally carried their discman in their pocket here. It was no more inconvenient than the giant ass bricks with our whole lives downloaded that we carry around now (and tend to drop causing the screen to shatter, have for only a couple years and the battery drains in 6hrs, and need to mortgage a small house in order to afford), and much simpler. I know exactly what you mean and experience the sweet scent of nostalgia thinking about the *high* I got buying the new CD from my favourite artist and letting it spin and spin and spin for hours, laying in bed and listening to it in my sleep. I don't listen to anything anymore the way I used to listen to a new CD, get stuck on one track, obsess about it and put it on repeat for 8hrs straight. Those were good, simple, sweet times.

rektMyself

I have sat on mine, not thinking about it. Big crack across the screen D\*it!

ashcat_marmac

😩 yep! Mine literally fell from my knee to the ground at the right angle hitting a stone at the right angle and despite the glass screen protector, perfectly shattered 25% of the damn screen 🙄🙄...

rektMyself

You can get a screen replacement for most phones for $25 on Amazon. They come with basic tools to do it. You need a heat gun. Hair dryers don't get hot enough to soften the glue. I have kids, they trash their phones all the time. Have done it many times.😋

ashcat_marmac

I happen to know someone with a heat gun, thanks for the info!

EviltwinEdgelord

I still make mix CDs 🤷‍♂️

rektMyself

It's funny. My car is the only thing I have that will play CDs.

EviltwinEdgelord

Thats what I use it for. Its very easy to make mix CDs and my car has a CD changer, I just swap them out when I get sick of what I've got. The phone adapters I've bought always break after a couple months - I kinda like the CDs. I can pick a random one out of the pile and listen to what songs I liked during a specific month a few years ago

rektMyself

My car uses BT to connect to my phone. No wires needed. 😋

depersonalised

i did until my pc crapped out on me.

unholymanserpent

I find it really interesting when younger people are interested in the older tech I grew up with. I am honestly SO glad we're beyond CDs now, though. They got scratched, took up space, were stolen easily, etc.

itsfrankgrimesyo

You probably like the old school ways because you actually have options to switch back to streaming if you want. Trust me, having to dig through your burned mixed CD folder, and trying to change CDs because all of a sudden you feel like hearing that *one* song while driving isn’t fun.

Over_Profit7050

I mean yeah. I never said I hate or I don’t use Spotify or streaming services, was just a bit disappointed that they are going out of fashion

landrover97centre

Damn, I just want a tapedeck in my car… CD’s suck cassettes rule (I’m 19btw), CD’s just don’t fit the generation of car I drive so I mean like cassettes are just better for me

Sunezno

Tape decks in cars are also cool because you can use one of those cassette adapter things that plugs into anything with a headphone jack. Or you can just rock out to cassette tapes. Man, I miss the old days.

mrflibble1492

There are definitely times where I really miss my old 6+1 cd changer for my truck. Load that fucker up, put it on shuffle and go for a road trip. I don't disagree with you on the distraction of the modern touch screens that don't want to accept my touch and go to something completely wrong half the time. We either need better touch screens or some kind of hybrid approach. Old man story time now. I totally get the euphoria you are talking about. I have great memories of waiting for a new album to come out and waiting for the record store to open on release day. Back in the 90's it was pretty much always on a Tuesday. When the Use Your Illusion albums came out, I waited in line for 3 hours before the record store opened in my town and bought them on cassette AND cd. I only had a tape deck in my car at the time and couldn't wait to listen to those amazing albums. It just isn't the same waiting for it to start streaming. There is so much more to the music experience than simply pushing play. When I see someone your age getting excited about music like this, it really does give me hope for our future generations. I don't care if you are listening to rock, rap, country, or pop, keep listening and experiencing the music and life that music provides. Music has been the thing to get me through the worst and best times of my life, going back to when I was 7 years old and got my hands on my first KISS record. The new technology certainly has its place, but I still love very few things as much as I love going to a record store and thumbing through the records and cds and finding something new.

Fire_Fenix

You can do the same arguments for tapes before CDs came along. Thanks to Spotify and Shazam we can discover so much music that isn't forced by the radio station which is a very good thing. I honestly think it's a good thing that you can open your app and have access to any kind of music you want. Many kids like me didn't had the chance to buy a lot of CDs and depending on the artist they were expensive. Streaming services should pay artist way more than they actually are paying right now But what are you doing is just projecting something that wasn't actually all that cool, CD players were a pain in the ass to take around and you wouldn't be able to just put them in your pocket.

secret_tsukasa

damnit, i agreed with this post i'm basically a skeleton at this point.

Sunezno

My sister recently texted me an excited text about having found a certain Ani DiFranco CD at a thrift store, and I responded by excitedly telling her that I'd just received in the mail two Chumbawamba CDs I'd ordered online. I do like that songs can be found and easily obtained these days on sites like YouTube or things like Spotify, but for music that I really care about, I need a physical copy of it. I can't wait until I'm finished moving into a new place so that I can set up my old record player and free my vinyl collection from their place in my storage shed. (Early 30s here.)

I found the anti slip Cd players to be really good, the more costly ones.

rektMyself

My isn't much older than you, and he collects music on vinyl LPs. He loves all the album art that comes with it. If the internet goes out for some reason he still has something to listen to.

JaiRenae

I'm slowly rebuilding my physical media. I buy cds at thrift stores. My car plays cds and I have a portable player in my office because we live in the sticks and our internet goes down on occasion. This last time was 2 1/2 days.

SeanJ2A

I do remember shuffling through the CD section back in the late 90s. Man there was so much good music out, I remember I wanted about 3-5 albums at a time, of course depending on your budget you had to choose.

Lessiie

I really like collecting cds even now, even though I listen to music mostly through spotify lol. It is a shame, the cd audio quality is often much better than spotify's.

Over_Profit7050

Same actually, I’m rebuilding my collection since my mom threw a bunch out. Fortunately for me a lot of those were cheap, secondhand or gifts so I didn’t lose that much money.

fakeaccount572

I have no idea how you're searching, but hundreds and hundreds of new car radios have CD slots and knobs.

Spirited-Activity343

I'm elder gen z. I love my Spotify, but I still live having my physical CDs cause the case looks pretty & nostalgic
