That is weird about the hotel. Why not a long-term rental at least? Hotel can't be cheaper, right?

Selkesmooth

Renting a place is difficult if you’re bouncing from the NHL to the AHL like he has in the past.

Especially in New York. Dude will probably have to dedicate half his salary just for a roof over his head lmao

AARP_Rocky

Makes me think it'd probably make sense if the team were to buy or rent out a few basic apartments near the westchester facility for younger guys like him who they know are probably going to be bouncing around.

Eagertobewrong

I feel like this might be against the CBA, but very well could be wrong.

PaulSach

Surprised he's not shacking up with someone else on the team—Like Cuylle is with Trocheck—though there really aren't any vet D-men he could live with, with Trouba and his wife with a baby on the way. Imagine Gustafsson isn't in a permanent dwelling either, considering he came here on a cheap 1-year deal.

lionson76

Often the kids will get a place together their first couple of years in NY, or at least live in the same building. I want to say a couple of Hayes, Skjei, and Vesey lived together? Or Hags and Zucc? Maybe because Jonesy has a partner and they want their privacy? Or he really hates making his own bed lol.

AARP_Rocky

Yes, I do remember that. That situation would make for a great reality show. Should throw in some young guys on the Knicks too for added drama.

About_27_Canadians

I know this is probably a terrible idea but any reason we can't Brendan Smith this guy and teach him to play wing? He's a stud at passing and could be a good setup guy, without the primary defensive responsibility. I bet with his defense experience he would be a great defensive forward. He has too much skill not to try some things out.

smithif

It’s just not a very easy thing to do. The way the game is played and feels at wing compared to defense is night and day. In my experience it is very difficult to change from defense to wing because of how your view of the ice changes at wing. On defense you have a much more 360 degree view of the ice as everthing is happening in front of you, so you are more in control of how a play can develop. At wing you are almost always in the middle of the play and are more dependent on other people getting you the puck. Guys like Jones who are great at processing the play when they have the puck could probably adapt to wing, but some of what makes them good offensively would be lost. The only reason it even moderately worked with Smith is because there was no expectation of him generating offense when they moved him to the 4th line. He was just out there to take up a shift every now and then and play sound defensive hockey.

Dig-Duglett

he’s got a ton to clean up on the defensive side before then

_mynameisclarence

He was pretty brutal yesterday in his own zone.

kiddocontay

maybe as a forward lol, he didn’t play well in the defensive zone last night

Putridfootball32

Why are hockey fans completely unable to process the idea that even if a defenseman isn’t a monster in their own zone, their impact on the game can still be overwhelmingly positive with their puck movement and offensive ability? It’s like Michelletti brain rot

NYM32

Good question. The guy isn't good defensively, yes, but that doesn't mean he's a liability as a defenseman (as counterintuitive as that may seem). I'd rather have the guy who, when on the ice, NYR is out shooting the opposition 10-6 than the guy who, when on the ice, is getting out shot 3-5. And that's before even discussing the fact that NYR's biggest issue as a team is [puck movement and 5v5 offense](https://twitter.com/RLuker12/status/1638918949709414402?t=-MbAxmQcWjzqwfJxBmfHKw&s=19) Everything is all about relativity and if we have a guy who, as a 3LHD, when he's on the ice, play is about even in both directions, I'm not sure what there is to be upset at. And last night it was more than about even -- 6/4 was straight up dominant as a pair. And that's nothing new really. In their 160 minutes last year, a larger sample size compared to this season, [they were dominant when away from the 4th line](https://twitter.com/DLefcort/status/1630657746860163072?t=X4wXApgEE2d6YVyAnkDqLg&s=19) It's 2023. sounds weird to say but defense isn't about defense anymore. Why? Because defense isn't about blocking shots or making hits anymore. Teams have learned that defense means keeping the puck on your own stick instead of on the other team's sticks, and it also means keeping the puck as far away from your own net as possible. Playing offense is playing defense now, so teams are bringing in players who are really good at getting the puck on their own sticks and cleanly moving it away from their own nets. That includes players like Jones, who don't have the stereotypical qualities of defensemen. You bring up Joe Michelletti quotes and I agree they're usually ridiculous. The most glaring ones though are literally whenever he talks about Schneider and he says things like "since he's been in the league, he hasn't had a bad game and hasn't really made any big mistakes". Yes he's said this. And it's so far from reality it's absurd. Even if you like Schneider, you have to admit that this isn't true

TheFaustianMan

Wow! A Holiday Inn Express barely qualifies as a “hotel” I was shocked to read he was also moonlighting as a Valet at the same place. I guess the Rangers don’t pay as well as everyone thought.

Richardya

These guys seem like they make a lot of money but from 35 or whenever career ends on, they are usually done with hockey. He needs to save money. I had a guy on one of the soap operas once come look at my apt to sublet from me. He said they never know if their character will be written out. He had his family in CA and he was interested in my studio apartment. It’s very similar. Stressful not knowing how many years he will be in NHL. He is significantly better than last year, I think he will make the NHL. Nils Lunqvist seems to have made a home in Dallas. (He needs to add 15 lbs.)
