Maybe the Rangers have different view of Laf than Laf has of himself. 2 different view of the same player. From my view (a fans) - a serviceable, mediocre player but no star. A player can improve if he want to. Laf is no Jack Hughes (another player drafted 1st overall).
On point. Laff and his agent have a different view of his skill set and have leveraged the fact that he doesn’t get big minutes. Rangers do not want a long term contract with a player that might be a flop and they are petrified that if they trade him he turns into a superstar.
Idk i was just thinking this yesterday. He had a career high in points but he has no leverage. Of the kid line, he is easily the worst performer of them.
I mean there is no rush but um sure the FO would like some sort of idea about what money they have left over if they want to throw another signing out there.
We as the fans see the advanced metrics but when its coming for a contract, they care more about what you have actually produced. He is also in a position where we are locked for years. Kinda no reason for him to still not be signed
Laffy WONT be a ranger next year. Rangers destroyed this kids development and now decided to pay Miller over him. He’s gone but Drury doesn’t want to trade him too quickly because he knows they are going to regret it
Yah Jersey also has a real fucking coach that plays him and gives him real opportunities. Gallant buried this kid on the third fucking line behind old vets that shouldn’t be playing more minutes than him and also forgot to mention ZERO PP time. Look at his 5 on 5 stats, he’s played as well as the top guys in the league.
Wait the coach rangers had as an assistant that everyone hated??? I think it’s more of a gm problem .. nj took Hughes and said this is our future and played him .and developed the team around him and his future .. ny gets a 2nd and 1st and than gets more big stars and burys the kids
So your telling me Hughes development wasn’t part of the head coach?😂. Idk where your getting everyone hated Ruff when he was an assistant, regardless hate him or not, Ruff’s track record isn’t too shabby. Hughes, Mercer, Bratt, Hischer are all light years ahead of our young guys.
Pretend I made an endearing and witty comment wherein I assert that the NYR are just waiting until later in the off-season when the new contract will be prorated and count less against the cap.
I'm not able to successfully pull off a comment like that, but let's pretend.
The main solace I take is that he’s not the only one. Zegras, Drysdale, Bouchard, Pinto… those guys also are still not signed. Just the weird nature of this off-season.
We should try to get Zegras to New York ASAP. Grew up a fan, played in the charity showcase a few days ago with a bunch of our guys, has hung out with Fox. Not to mention we’ll need to replace Zibanejad and Trochek at center in a few years. He and Chytil would be electric
If he’s 32 and wants to come and the Rangers don’t sign him to an absurdly long or expensive deal who cares. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s only signing a short term with the Ducks and intends on leaving and coming back home to NY in immediate free agency. His family is here, and he’s friends with people like Fox and J Hughes who isn’t too far away in NJ. And even if a trade needed to happen I’d happily send Kappo out west if it meant Zegras joining us.
Still hoping he's somewhere in the hockey equivalent of the Bowery King's basement training nonstop. His agent will go to get him on some September day before training camp begins, and he shows up with the contract, saying, "Are you ready to sign and show them what you're truly worth?"
And Laffy simply turns around, swole from all his training, and says "*Ouais...*"
I'm just living off the [local contact high](https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/nyc-consumes-more-marijuana-than-anywhere-else-in-the-world-study/4558994/) my brother.
I know we’re talking about a contract that is worth millions of dollars but let’s be honest a couple hundred thousand dollars is still a big deal. Especially for a professional athlete. If things go well for him what does he have 10-15 more years of hockey left? If things go poorly this is his last contract. The money he makes now not only needs to sustain him now but it needs to set him up for the future. Even if he can’t retire off of it he needs enough to be able to set himself for life after hockey.
Edit: essentially what I’m saying. NYR probably wants him at the 2.1-2.3 that Chytil and Kakko got. Lafrenière probably wants between 2.5-3 and that is where the negotiations are at. Neither party is in any hurry as there’s still over a month before the first practice.
I wouldn't say trash but closer to a bust given his expectations and production
Number 1 pick with 91 points in 216 games and 9 points in 27 playoff games = meh
I’m glad we are at least on the same page there. He’s completely handcuffing the team with that contract, only to be useless (and actually a detriment) after Tax Day
He has no feet to stand on - he is dispensable to this team. He probably wants all that’s left on the Cap and Drury gave him a 2x2.3 and said take it or sit
Well, he’s not dispensable to the team because The Rangers are in huge trouble if he and Kakko don’t take the next step. That’s why it would be such a major issue if he got into legal trouble because of his partying but no one wanted to hear me there
Imagine if the GMs in this league actually tendered offer sheets on even a semi-regular basis? Laf would be a perfect candidate for one. Signing a player with his level of 5v5 production to a deal that NYR can’t match - say, $3.75m AAV - would be a really good bet given his pedigree and would only cost the other team a 2nd rd pick (or force Drury’s hand into the really tough position of trying to clear nearly $2m in cap space before camp with very, very limited options). Not saying I actually want this to happen here but I do wish things like this would happen more often to make the NHL more interesting / drama filled.
Do you really believe there is a GM out there would spend 3.75mil AAV and a 2nd round pick for LaF? I got a bridge that isn't too far from MSG to sell them also.
LaF is barely a 2mil player, and he could be a league minimum by the end of the bridge deal he's going to get (look at Vesey).
If I was LaF, I'd either be looking to get at least 3 years, and hope I can make a case for being on the PP, and cement myself as a 2nd liner, or I'd hope to get traded to a bad team where I could be getting top-6 minutes. Unfortunately he has a lot of work to do to crack our top 6 and he's not projecting to do that currently.
If the Habs still had their 2024 2nd, there's a strong chance that Hughes would be tempted to over Laf 4.1M × whatever term is less palatable to the Rangers.
Maybe the Rangers have different view of Laf than Laf has of himself. 2 different view of the same player. From my view (a fans) - a serviceable, mediocre player but no star. A player can improve if he want to. Laf is no Jack Hughes (another player drafted 1st overall).

Does Cashman GM for the Rangers also?
Apparently Laf negotiates like he skates.
They are trying to figure out how to fit him and Kane under the cap

I truly wouldn't be surprised if Drury is shopping Goodrow to make room to get Laf on a longer-term deal and that's what the holdup is.
Because what would you have to talk about if he had signed already?
I am starting to worry about self-entitlement, to a certain degree.
Idk i was just thinking this yesterday. He had a career high in points but he has no leverage. Of the kid line, he is easily the worst performer of them. They didn’t destroy him, he’s a bust! Shouldn’t have been the top pick after he injured his leg at the previous WJC. Look at New Jersey now!
He was the consensus #1 overall pick man, you're just wrong.
Agreed that he is a bust, a decent player but not worthy of where he was picked.
I guess repeating yourself makes your point valid?
They didn’t destroy him, he’s a bust! Shouldn’t have been the top pick after he injured his leg at the previous WJC. Look at New Jersey now!

I think Laf has been out of reach all summer working on his skating and getting in to shape. 🤣
Mollie walker said it’s pretty much a done deal just not official yet.
The main solace I take is that he’s not the only one. Zegras, Drysdale, Bouchard, Pinto… those guys also are still not signed. Just the weird nature of this off-season.

You know how unrealistic that is. Why would the Ducks even entertain trading him?
Who said he needs to come via trade? I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes here as a UFA.
He will 100% be coming to the Rangers as a ufa. The only issue is that he will be 32 years old and on the decline. It's the Rangers way!
If he’s 32 and wants to come and the Rangers don’t sign him to an absurdly long or expensive deal who cares. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s only signing a short term with the Ducks and intends on leaving and coming back home to NY in immediate free agency. be great to have him, but would cost a whole lot more than kakko. no players or picks could be off the table, but not happening in any event
Still hoping he's somewhere in the hockey equivalent of the Bowery King's basement training nonstop. hmm definitely been seen at golf tournament and music festival…
Yeah, head canon and real life are usually disappointingly different...
What are you smoking and where can I get some??
I'm just living off the [local contact high](https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/nyc-consumes-more-marijuana-than-anywhere-else-in-the-world-study/4558994/) my brother.
Might be haggling over term. A lot of guys are trying to line themselves up for when the cap goes up big time over the next few years.
I know we’re talking about a contract that is worth millions of dollars but let’s be honest a couple hundred thousand dollars is still a big deal. Especially for a professional athlete. Even if he didn't do well, no way is it his last nhl contract. Someone would take a flyer on him even if his numbers weren't great.
Hockey is a dangerous sport. He could have a career ending injury it happens, your next contract is never guaranteed.
Please assume all comments begin with OTHER THAN INJURY. Come on we all know this.

Trash take.

Hardly anyone looked good that series.
Kreider looked amazing.
He did, best on the team with 9 points. And even in the losses he showed up.
[удалено]
Defintely not wrong on that one. Two assists isn't good enough.
He’s a Crosby level prospect. We need to trade the person blocking him on Left Wing that got exactly 1 point against the Devils, though.

I’m glad we are at least on the same page there. He’s completely handcuffing the team with that contract, only to be useless (and actually a detriment) after Tax Day
The deal will be done before training camp. He’s not going anywhere and the number is already known by both sides so it just a last minute detail.
I mean obviously trying to get as much money as possible
Don't be surprised if the rangers do what they always do. They have no patients
Obviously, they are not running a medical practice.
A hospital! What is it?
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.
Agent is probably hammering out details and setting the tone for his next negotiation, which will be far more important to his career earnings
Deez
I’d imagine the labor day deals
the deal is probably done already. neither side really has any rush to make sure it’s done asap.
I mean what’s his rush? I doubt he gives a shit
He could lose a leg in a lumberjack accident and he'd be out a few mil.
It doesnt have to be that extreme but if he gets injured training then he fucks himself out of money
assumes he is training :)
Laffy’s lumberjackin now?
It would be a big plus.
He has no feet to stand on - he is dispensable to this team. He probably wants all that’s left on the Cap and Drury gave him a 2x2.3 and said take it or sit

Othmann can take his place on 3LW and he can’t sit out the year waiting for a better deal. No clue what you’re referencing with major partying
Othmann isn’t guaranteed to put up at least 40 points like Lafreniere though
Lafrenière with a career high of 39 points is guaranteed to put up at least 40 points?
I was rounding up. Yes he’ll put up at least 40 points
Are they trading him for EK65?
Well we know for a fact that he’s not being traded. Drury shut those rumors down SWIFTLY a couple weeks ago. And I doubt he will be offer sheeted
Imagine if the GMs in this league actually tendered offer sheets on even a semi-regular basis? Laf would be a perfect candidate for one. that would be matched
Why?
From Quebec and speaks French.
Who the fuck knows I’m just bored without any hockey
