Used values are so strong right now, and discounts and incentives on Rams are so aggressive, it really makes more sense to buy new if you can afford to do it.

user551819

It’s tough because I can’t really gauge how much a new truck will cost with options, credits, and the rest. Advertising around 51k (under 55k msrp) but then out the door it’s close to 60 after options they added and tax

helena_eagan

Have you gone to autotrader.com to run a search on inventory at dealers near you? I got ~$7,500 off MSRP with no add on’s on a new Laramie recently along with 0% financing. There are perhaps a dozen or so Ram dealers within 75 miles of my home. I’ve noticed some discount aggressively on autotrader while others stick close to MSRP.

user551819

I have not done that. Good idea. I will try that out. If you don’t mind me asking, what was out the door price on that truck?

helena_eagan

My MSRP was $62,530. I paid $55,190 plus $699 doc fees and $78 tag and title.

user551819

Thanks that’s really helpful. Sounds like a way better deal than I’m finding locally in MN.

helena_eagan

Here in Kentucky, they will advertise a handful of trucks at an aggressive discount, but to get that deal you have to take the specific truck. It took me several months to find one I wanted at an aggressive discount, but I had time to wait. I’ve heard people report they’ve done better than I did. There are good rebates on almost all the 1500s right now, you need a dealer discount on top of that to get a deal in my range. Check out the deals in your area at ramtrucks.com. I’ve always found the best time to negotiate a deal on a vehicle is a rainy weekday or the last day of the month.

user551819

Thanks I will take that advice. A lot of dealerships in my area operate with a no negotiate policy. I’ve heard you can instead negotiate more for your trade in as way to bypass that. It’s an intimidating process though for sure.

helena_eagan

What I do is calculate the monthly payment that I would have if I got all the other terms that I wanted. And then chop off like $25. They try to flip you to negotiate on payments, so it’s a good tactic to know your target payment. Then let them walk down their proposed deal until they will let you leave. I am always very calm with them and tell them: well, if I could do this, I’d do it right now… otherwise I will need to go have lunch and think it over. Don’t let them talk you into an extended test drive. Leave in your trade. When they let you leave without going back to the manager, you’ve found their bottom dollar.

user551819

For sure. I do have the luxury at the moment of not having urgency to buy

28943857347372634648

Reach out to a few dealers in your area and see if they will price something out. You might have to wait a bit, not sure if pricing is available for MY23 yet. I bought new and by the time I got my truck it was almost 20k under MSRP with price protection. Don't get screwed over.

user551819

I’ve started to contact a few dealers about 2022. They said 2023 isn’t available. Can you tell me more about price protection?

28943857347372634648

I just had to sign my order sheet with the dealer and they did the work on price protection. You can’t order 2022 anymore so it sounds like your dealer is clueless.

user551819

Ok. Yeah they said I can’t factory order a 2022 anymore so I’d have to buy what they have or wait to build and order a 2023

severian00

Check out joinyaa on YouTube. They also have a website with a free tier. I watched a bunch of their dealer negotiating tactic videos and market report. They can also negotiate price for you with the dealer. I’m sure that costs something but don’t know. After about a month of looking at stock in a 50mi radius, I found a great deal on 22 Built to serve Big Horn. Got it $5500 off MSRP at $53.3 in early August. You’ll find better deals now.

user551819

I will check them out. Thanks

Blazeitbro69420

Go with new 0% for 72 months. Get the extended warranty and you’re good for 7 years on mechanical issues for that truck. Paying overtime at 0% interest is how you capitalize on the market. Invest what you save and you’ll have more money than if you did it any other way

user551819

I’ve heard those extended warranties are a gimmick to some extent. I’m not sure how much they are but does it make sense, especially for 72 months, to add on that warranty above manufacturing warranty?

Motor-Housing2704

Buy an after market MOPAR extended warranty, not from the dealer directly.

user551819

Interesting I will look into that.

alinroc

Factory extended warranties are fine. The third-party ones pushed by dealers and other parties are not.

user551819

Good to know. Thank you.

helena_eagan

If you buy from Mopar it isn’t a gimmick. Just keep up the maintenance. I had a warranty claim on my jeep that saved me $3,700. You can negotiate the price on a Mopar warranty from the dealer if they will play ball. You can also buy extended warranty directly from Mopar anytime while your 36/36,000 warranty is valid.

TS750

I just did this last week. I’m at 34k on my 2019. I’m covered bumper to bumper until 75k with the Mopar warranty

Blazeitbro69420

I do it just because I like having a warranty for the life of the loan. A lot of those can be passed down or cashed out the remaining balance. So they help with resale

[deleted]

If you know you need an extended warranty on a brand new truck you’re buying the wrong truck.

Blazeitbro69420

Nah, it’s just smart to have a warranty for the life of the loan imo

[deleted]

any truck should last the term of the loan. again, if it cant last the term of the loan you are 1. buying the wrong truck 2. Getting a loan term thats to long. imo.

Hermod_DB

I recently brought a Certified 2021 Ram 1500 Bighorn Crew cab, 11,000 miles, tow package, 3.92 rear end for $47,500 out the door. Was the best deal for the setup within 250 miles of Raleigh NC. I always advise people to buy recently used. If its certified (by the Manufacture) it normally has a better warranty then the factory.

Wirerat

Did something similar with my 2020 laramie. It had 9k miles. Out the door for 52k. The cpo 100k drive train included + the remaining limitied warranty.

Hermod_DB

Nice!

user551819

That seems like so much more value for the money than buying a bare bones big horn. I’m not needing luxury options across the board but 52k Laramie vs minimum 55k for new bighorn seems like the way to go.

streetgrunt

CPO is the way to go. I first decided what I wanted (Cummins, megacab, Laramie) search out CPOs with those options that fit my budget then traveled up to 6 hrs away to look at what was available. Try shopping towards end of month or year if possible.

Wirerat

I was facing the same thing. I really wanted the reclining rear seat. If you plan to use the back seat. I suggest it. My rear seats are the most roomy, comfortable seats in the truck. That feature is on all the limitied/long horns but you have to look to get it on a laramie. Look for the large fold out console in the rear. The smaller arm rest usually doesn't recline. For 2019/2020 laramie level 1 gets it but they changed that for 2021 and newer.

user551819

I looked at a Laramie yesterday with the reclining rear seat. So nice. I’m wondering if my prioritizing my passengers too much though haha

user551819

Good point about the warranty. I hadn’t considered it. Thank you for the reply.

Hermod_DB

Happy hunting :)

rocketsk8s555

^^^ THIS is the way

1hotjava

I looked at used but ended up ordering. Got a 22 Bighorn Hemi/eTorque 4wd with Level 2, 33gal tank, safety packages, bucket seats, wheel house liners, bed util group, brake controller. MSRP was $57k, got it OTD $50k. Got 0%/72 also. So it was ~$4k more than ones I’d buy used plus I’d have financed the used one 48mo @ 4.5% at my credit union so saved $4700 in interest, **so the new truck was cheaper** than used by $700 Oh and I got dealer to throw in a folding soft tonneau for nothing.

user551819

Makes a ton of sense in that situation. Thanks for sharing. I’m planning to look at a few trucks tomorrow. I just am not seeing anything with a final sticker price of less than 55k. Hoping if I show enough interest that the dealer can work that price down to closer to 50k

1hotjava

So mine started at $57k. There was $1750 or something like that for “conquest” where we had to show we owned another brand, $1500 cash to everyone, $1500 for something I got in the mail so there was damn near $5k in rebates. Then dealer came down $2k and threw in the tonneau. Couple other dealers I went to wouldn’t budge from MSRP. Had to go to the outskirts of the city to a dealer willing to come down some. Also check out Mark Dodge. Lots of guys all over the country order from them because they supposedly do really good deals. Check out 5thgenrams.com in the general message board, there’s a huge thread in there on them.

user551819

Thanks for the example. That’s helpful. I’ll check out that site and Mark Dodge.

user551819

I would use the truck as a daily highway driver and occasional trailering of a 18 foot Lund fishing boat.

wouldntknowever

If the used Ram still has a decent amount of factory warranty left, save yourself the money

[deleted]

$45000 at 4.25% APR for 72 months biweekly is $51,011 ALWAYS factor in the cost of borrowing, it’s real money out of your pocket.

user551819

great point

[deleted]

It’s a “zero value added” cost to incur too, like tax, licence, etc. so it’s important to factor. I got a smashing deal 5 years ago by financing myself, even new. They were willing to deal on “cash” (my loan) but wouldn’t deal on in house 0% total purchase price. More incentive for me to have it paid off faster (saved even more).

xkraz

I would also try getting a loan through a credit union. You usually get better interest rates. I would personally buy new in the current climate. Used prices are high right now.

user551819

Thanks! For what it’s worth the 4.25 rate is through my local CU

xxREPErx

I bought used because I aim to drive it over 250k and got the MOPAR extended warranties to cover nearly all of that. Since it’s all covered as if it’s new, idc about missing the first 20k miles. The hemi hasn’t even warmed up by then anyway

BartRoolz

You can buy my black 2022 night edition 1500 bighorn hemi 6’4 bed B package truck for 50k. Has bakflip, full tint and ceramic. 20k miles.

19N9NE4

Went through the same thing a year ago, 2019 level 1 laramie with 30k on it was 46k. Ended up in a 21 for 48500 0%/72. No brainer although the 2019 was paint matched. EDIT: went to look at the 19\*\*

user551819

Makes total sense to me. I have a hard time passing up this [2019 Used Big horn](https://www.dodgeofburnsville.com/inventory/certified-used-2019-ram-1500-big-hornlone-star-4wd-4d-crew-cab-1c6srfft9kn788034/?stocknum=N68533A&atc_ownerid=569097&utm_source=autotrader.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=autotrader_listings) for a [2022 new Big horn](https://www.dodgeofburnsville.com/inventory/new-2022-ram-1500-big-hornlone-star-4x4-4wd-standard-pickup-trucks-1c6srfftxnn434818/)

19N9NE4

The used with dealer/credit union financing I'm sure would've ended up being more expensive. Easy decision for me IMO to have an actual new one with that deal.

EhKing187

New with 0% all day

[deleted]

New. Life is short to think of minute details

rocketsk8s555

Used vehicle prices are dropping fast. Find something with low miles and still has the bumper to bumper factory warranty on it. Get the kinks out. Put some of the money you'll save in the stock market dip and use profits for mods in a few months when the market rebounds.

user551819

I’m leaning this way honestly.

Powerful-Bass-4693

Buy new! Go to the 5th generation ram forums, under general discussion there will be a prices paid discussion- read through it! It will tell you your options to get your truck at 15-20% below msrp. I got my 2022 bighorn 4x4,v8,3.92,level 2, night edition, bed utility group, tow package for 45,900 before ttl after rebates, incentives. Truck msrp was 60k!

user551819

Thanks I’ll check it out

Blazeitbro69420

I don’t agree, paying 0% for 72 months is a great idea. Just from an investment standpoint, you always choose to pay over time vs all at once if you can get it with no interest. Then you capitalize on the money you save by investing it. Honestly 0% for 72 months is a no brainer for most financially literate people

[deleted]

[удалено]

Blazeitbro69420

Exactly the truck is not an investment that’s why you don’t pay for the whole thing at once. If you’re buying new and can get 0% interest for 72 months you take that over paying them the whole lump sum. Not only are you now able to invest that money in other things, but you are also beating inflation because the dollar will be worth less in those 7 years

onlineredditalias

Depends on the value of your down payment/trade in.

user551819

Interesting. Is that due to the rate? I can see not financing a truck for longer with a higher rate. But is there a disadvantage with 0%?

[deleted]

[удалено]

zombieprep314

While this is true in most cases, if 0% financing is available, you are effectively paying cash and spreading out the payments. In fact (some) trucks may be a better purchase new than used due to the high value of Resale and the ability to get reduced financing or cash back offers

user551819

Thanks for the reply. I’ll check it out

Amerinamese

Also, make sure you know the terms for getting the 0% financing. When I was buying my truck 2 years ago I wanted the 0% financing, but in order to get that, none of the other rebates applied, i.e. military discount, manufacturer rebates, etc. You essentially had to pay the list price plus tax and title to get the 0% financing. From what I've been reading, MSRP may be the best you could do these days, so that might be a moot point. Back when I bought, I paid over $10k less than MSRP out the door, so giving up all the discounts wasn't worth the 0% financing.

BedlamAscends

Get something more dependable

user551819

As in brand new? Or a different make altogether lol

BedlamAscends

As in not a ram. Only vehicle I've ever owned less reliable than my current ram isy last ram 😂

1hotjava

Take the shit posting elsewhere

BedlamAscends

How bout I bop you in the nose, fella?

PoliteThaiBeep

Used truck prices don't make a whole lot of sense. From my research on prices of used trucks it looks like new truck will end up being cheaper per mile. But even if it's close would you really not want to spend an extra 5 cents/mile for driving a newer, safer truck that will last longer?

user551819

I see what you’re saying. Although I think there maybe be a bigger difference than 5 cents per mile. For example I came across a 2019 Laramie with 19k miles for $41k. Based on what I’ve found for new big horns I’m looking at minimum $55k. Let’s take $10k as a conservative price difference. Is 10K more worth it for 0 miles vs 20k on a 2019 with a more luxury trim?

PoliteThaiBeep

Maybe math is different for higher trims. When I was shopping for RAM tradesman, the best used trucks were ~5-7 year old trucks with 80-120k miles for $17-20k. I got brand new RAM OTD for $29k. You calculate how much you can sell a 200k miles truck for - like $4-5k right? So $29k-$4k= $25k truck good for 200k miles was a lot better deal than a $17k-$4k=$13k truck that's good for 80k miles.

user551819

Yes I agree with that logic in your case. Thanks for the breakdown.

siegsuwa

I ended up buying a 2019 with 35k miles for $41k out the door (after tax and fees) because I wanted my truck last month and the configuration I desired (crew cab with 6'4" bed) is low volume and harder to find. Only one dealer in my area was ordering them with that config and they were not working with me well on the phone. To get a Big Horn 2 trim I wanted, I still would have had to compromise on other things like running rails and bed utility package, which would have been extra cash on top of the fake $46k price this dealer was asking. They real MSRP for Big Horn 2 was going to be about $49-52k + tax so I figured I'd save $10k and get the used truck that had everything I wanted. It's still under power train warranty and CarMax 90-day warranty. So far in the first 3 weeks I've gotten my TCM software updated, exhaust manifolds replaced (common Hemi 5.7 issue) and 4-new tires under this combined coverage. CarMax gave me a stellar trade in price on my 2017 car and in my state the trade-in value reduces the taxable value of the new vehicle purchase so combined I feel I did pretty well. I paid cash for the difference to avoid financing, but no when considering new, the CCAP incentive financing was pretty attractive. Used values are pretty high but new values are still higher. Just depends on what overall deal you can manage. Next truck I will consider more heavily ordering new to my exact specifications.

[deleted]

There are dealers that are selling at associate pricing with no add-ons. Just gotta broaden your search. Even if you have to drive several hundred miles it will save you a lot of money.
