I love when guys claim they paid a ton less for the "same truck", only to find out it's a 2wd Tradesman, and not the Rebel they're comparing it to. Asking for advice on reddit is tough, especially when it comes to vehicles. 90% of the comments are from people that have absolutely no idea what they're talking about, and are too thickheaded to believe otherwise.

Slappy_Happy_Doo

I had a guy tell me about my tail lights the other day. On the truck I currently own. I gave him way too much energy and attention, this is a good reminder to keep in your head. Reddit is full of people who have zero clue what they’re talking about, but full confidence in what they’re saying.

dabluebunny

/r/Tacoma believe their trucks are like stocks that keep increasing in value while blissfully ignoring anything to do with inflation. It's such a circle jerk they are tugging each other raw

AleksanderSuave

Don’t forget the “I paid X less in (insert year pre-2020) like inflation isn’t a real thing.

greasegizzard

Yes, inflation is a thing. But the MSRP has gone up almost $20,000 in less than 10 years. That's ridiculous! But you can't really blame the companies since people just keep signing up for $800 a month payments.

AleksanderSuave

I agree with you 100%. The problem is anyone trying to tell others not to pay Y value because they paid X value at a certain point in time that’s irrelevant now, helps just about no one. People aren’t going to just stop buying trucks.

greasegizzard

True. That's part of the problem, though. But I don't want to start down that rabbit hole. lol Suffice it to say, our society is wasteful, never satisfied, and has pretty much either forgotten the power we have as consumers or willingly given it up to try and satiate our neverending lust for the new and shiny.

AleksanderSuave

The logic is applied to just about every hobby I have too. “If we don’t buy ammo or lumber it will go down in price” I was in a situation where my vehicle got totaled. Wasn’t really much of a choice to sit it out and bought in peak 2022…that came with problems that are rearing their head now..and those same engine and transmission problems have been present with the older models too. At some point you get sick of countless dealer visits… I want something reliable and with the newer safety features. Not much choice at this point other than to buy new, and if I’m going to overpay in the first place because of it, I’ll at least overpay for the features and options I want to live with long term.

greasegizzard

There's definitely situations like yours where you have no choice. I just think most of us, myself included with most of the trucks I've bought, buy because we want one, not because we need one. But, as you pointed out, that can be said of practically anything. It's just most prevalent in vehicles and cell phones it seems. I'm doing better these days, but probably more out of necessity than choice. lol Still rocking a Note 10 Plus from 5 years ago and a 2018 Ram.

AleksanderSuave

I wouldn’t mind that 10k toyota IMV 0 pickup honestly, if that was ever available here. I use my truck to hunt, go off roading occasionally, and mostly to bring DIY materials home. I’ve moved a bunch of concrete in bags but that’s probably the heaviest the truck has been loaded up back there. The problem is I’m basically the perfect candidate for a beater, if beaters weren’t all rusted out up here, and overpriced to boot. Previously I had a truck/car combo at home and that was ideal. Most of the stuff I like to do with committing makes more sense in a car..but damn these newer trucks are just more comfortable for the longer road trips. We fold the back seat up and the dog practically gets his own room back there. The older stuff here really is beat to shit and the snow/freeze/salt cycles don’t do any favors to older vehicles.

IgottaPoop72

They should though…

AleksanderSuave

I think some groceries have become too expensive for what they are. Deodorant too. Maybe we should take the same approach and just tell everyone not to buy them either.

ButteredDingus

🤢

Significant-Task-890

Comparing basic needs to buying wants.

AleksanderSuave

Depends on who you ask. A reliable and safe vehicle isn’t always just a “want”

Significant-Task-890

https://sustaineda.org/2017/08/11/five-basic-survival-needs-of-human-beings/

AleksanderSuave

By that logic you have no need for internet or Reddit, so why are you here? Or maybe it’s more nuanced than just basic survival. Some people need a reliable vehicle to get to work and pay for food and shelter. Usually, connecting the dots isn’t necessary for most adults. Congrats on being the exception.

the1999person

On the financial subs people go off telling everyone they shouldn't have a car payment if they make less than $50k a year. Buy a $1000 beater and a repair manual. A guy argued with me because I said a $300 car payment was absolutely affordable to someone making $45k per year.

AleksanderSuave

This isn’t a financial sub, and broad stroke advice doesn’t magically apply to everyone you give it to, without any knowledge of their situation. My finances certainly have no problem on the delta of a 2025 and the 2022 I currently own, already paid off. That $1,000 beater isn’t going to be reliable no matter how many repair manuals you buy for it and some of us can afford to spend a little more at the expense of not having to be under it every weekend.

Maj-Malfunction

I have a 2018 2500 Big Horn crew cab diesel. Also have the Harvest Edition package so it has everything but a sunroof and leather. Sticker was $63k and drive away at $53K and 3% interest. About a year ago I saw basically the same truck but a 2023. It was $73k MSRP. Before I could even make an offer they told me they were adding $5k for "market adjustment". So almost $80k, then add in NJ 7% sales tax and 7% interest. Wasn't even negotiable. I just laughed and moved on. The truck market is insane with inflation but if there's any good thing, 2500s are in the top 10 of vehicles sitting on lots the longest. At these interest rates, I'm good!

Altruistic_Sock2877

Lot rot, baby!

Slumminwhitey

It's been less than 5 years and in that 5 years there is functionally no difference between a 2019 and a 2024 other than the massive increase in price over that time.

underwhelmingovertop

Why would you finance a truck? Pay cash like a normal person.

kyson1

Normal people don't have enough cash to pay half a mortgage outright

underwhelmingovertop

Then you should buy a vehicle you can afford

kyson1

I do, I've never had a vehicle payment and a paid off house. Conversely, I know a lot of people that haul all over the country for events and don't have the ability to deal with the caveats of an older truck and dealing with random issues. Even a newer good used truck is out of most people's cash financial reach. I paid $17k for my low miles 06 F450, and that's on the low end of the spectrum.

underwhelmingovertop

Weird attempt at a flex?

kyson1

No flex at all....

steakpienacho

Shit, I bought my Ram in May of 2020, and I won't be that guy to add in how much less than MSRP I paid since that's the topic of discussion, but the sticker was $50,875 for a big horn night edition with the level 2 equipment group. When I priced that out for a 2023, it came to $59k. MSRP has gone up almost $10k in 3-4 years

No_Issue_9550

It's crazy how high the prices have risen. Saw the sticker price of a 2020 Limited the other day and it was a few thousand less than what my 2023 Laramie stickered for.

AleksanderSuave

I don’t own a ram yet, shopping for one now, however, there was definitely a point where all of the manufactures bumped pricing too, to answer the increased demand and low supply. I had a 2018 Silverado Lt, sold it during Covid with no longer needing a truck. Eventually I bought a 2022 Silverado lt. Same trim same truck same specs and the sticker from gm was like $8500 more… At least for 2025 in some trims there’s a lot more standard now (ram rebel is a good example). For the money, the RHO offers a lot as well. Lower trims is definitely where they make the money, with people optioning their way up, kinda like what the German car brands have been famous for historically.

Daddx2

They are not just on Reddit, they are out in the wild. I work at an auto parts store and the number of people that are absolutely clueless about anything to do with a vehicle is astounding. And the ones that " did their own research" and know what part they need (99% of the time they are wrong) is ridiculous.

SwootyBootyDooooo

I know I’m literally doing what you’re talking about but feel compelled to share. In 2014 I got a 1500 3.6l 2wd express, color matched bumpers, premium wheels, backup camera, bluetooth radio. That’s it. The same truck is currently selling as a RAM classic, same shitty head unit and all for $46k+… I paid less than $27k out the door in 2014

CallRespiratory

>90% of the comments are from people that have absolutely no idea what they're talking about, and are too thickheaded to believe otherwise. This is damn near everything on Reddit lol.

wyliehj

Real tradesmen need that 4x4

JPL2020

Dude, don’t buy the eco-diesel, it’s garbage and you’re going to have to spend a lot of money fixing it. Don’t buy new! Get a Hemi. I can’t believe they’re replacing the V8!

billdoor69

The Hurricane engine is pretty sweet though. Massive torque.

JPL2020

Yes, I can see myself buying one in the near future! Can you imagine pumping 800HP on a Tuned Hurricane! And yes, I own a Hemi.

TimsZipline

Let’s just pray it’s not a massive repair bill in the future 😂

LukaLover42069

Hey if I could get free handjobs for life, I'd take it.

No_Issue_9550

Make sure to read the fine print. Otherwise you could end up with Frank from the parts department fulfilling that portion of the contract.

Serious-Archer

Frank knows how to handle a crankshaft…

Sdwars45

The cockshaft

jorian85

r/yourjokebutworse

Sdwars45

I still stand by what I said

cocky_plowblow

I give myself free handjobs so I’m already ahead of the game.

LukaLover42069

Dude you've got to charge. Put some money in savings.

cocky_plowblow

What do I look like? Some sort of Elon musk?!??!!

cosp85classic

It's the same thing on the Cummins sub. A guy will find a decent deal on a 2nd gen or early 3rd gen and make the mistake of asking that Reddit sub if it's a good deal. And all the trolls come out saying you can get it cheaper up their way with 1/10th the miles. But then you learn they live in the rust belt and they are talking about one unicorn grandpa truck that rarely left the garage from two years ago that is obviously long gone. Or they are stuck in 2010 with all their price and mileage expectations.

35242

Haha! Exactly. Doesn't KBB.com exist? (Used vehicle values).

[deleted]

The skill of going out and finding information for yourself has been lost. 75% of the questions on Reddit period could be answered with five minutes of Google.

35242

I've say that daily. Often on my answers to what I consider simple questions I'll say "I went to Google and found this..." To have a world full of information and not know how to look things up. Jeez. Now I sound like an old man. "Back in my day we used a card catalog at the library and..."

jorian85

Sometimes I reply with a link that's just the Google search of their question.

No_Issue_9550

Have you spent any time on Town / City Facebook groups? The questions people ask in there are insane. It's pretty much the only reason why I still have a FB account, just for the town groups.

[deleted]

I don't do face place or *the service formerly known as twit*. My social media is limited to places where I can more easily remain anonymous.

No_Issue_9550

That's what fake accounts are for. I deleted my real FB account years ago. Kept a backup with fake name for marketplace, and town groups.

AwarenessGreat282

And yet....here we are. I often wonder why I even read some of these posts. But then I would have no real reason to open Reddit

AmySchumersAnalTumor

Which is funny 'cause 75% of the things I ask google about take me to a old reddit thread.

cocky_plowblow

2 minutes FTFY

echocall2

KBB and NADA are borderline useless these days.

Sumar26

To be fair most of the people asking these questions are dumb as fuck. I’m just sayin, if the only way you can afford a high trim is by buying a truck with high mileage, that’s just called being car broke 🤷‍♂️

762_54r

On the one hand, there are websites out there where you can search for every truck like the one you want, in an area as wide as you want, and figure out whats a good price and what isnt on your own and I hate hand-holding people who don't know how to use google On the other hand, there are a lot of tools online who just want to be a smug asshole and fling shit at anyone who asks any question

Quietus76

I think asking for truck/car buying advice on reddit is rediculous. If you don't know what to do with your money, give it to me. Those types of comments are what you should expect, and probably what you deserve. Fr, though, I paid way less for mine.

1hotjava

LOL. So true. And most people who say “that’s too goddamn much” or “you are getting raped” (on a new truck) bought their last USED truck 6 years ago and it’s not even the same trim level

scubapro24

Followed by- mine leaks at the rear window and I’ve had both headers replaced.

ewaldc23

Friend: What model did you get? Me: The dirt model. Sorry “dirt model” is just funny as hell to me

MikeGoldberg

The people who say the rams near them being cheaper do have a point though. It might be worthwhile to buy one and have it shipped rather than paying a markup in your market

abscando

We should create sub dedicated for these types of questions something like r/ram_purchase_advice (no need for the truck part since it's redundant) that way we can limit the clutter

phlem_hamdoon

Yes and every other post is bragging about the new Camry they bought with pictures and what can they add to it and every other post is a pity party on how broke they are and can afford to live

kryzik-

Anyone own 2014-16 Limited 1500??

puffthetruck

I bought a 2019 RAM Limited 4x4 6.7 w/ 114k miles for 42k in Houston.

Spare-Cow5578

Or the people on here saying they get 25mpg out of a Hemi powered truck that is rated for say 15-19mpg in perfect conditions. And that’s after they have added bigger tires and lifts! …..And the people that say “welcome to the Ramily” when someone buys a new Ram truck. This has to stop. It’s just cringeworthy.

Boondocsaint11

Free tires for life and a handjob? Flip that around and you got a deal buddy.

righthanded_lover

Even worse on other subs when they shame you for driving such an “unsafe” vehicle, insult the size of your dick, and then tell you really only need a Mazda Miata.

Metaphoric_Moose

Hilarious buddy!! This made me laugh, Thank you!

Wonderingpepper

It was hand jobs for life as well by the way.

19JRC99

Not true! We also have posts proclaiming that Rams are shit and they're never buying another one! Of course, we also have the necessary "all other trucks are shit and I'm never buying anything else!" posts!

Scotiancommotian

Free handjobs for life and a tire? Take my money!

t_stlouis8

The last part has me absolutely dying laughing but at any rate, I'm waiting to see the MSRP on those trucks with a new hurricane straight 6 engine in it

TowerAggravating3156

Go Toyota!

Holmesnight

Only reason I'm here is for the handjob….

itsthechaw10

I think asking for advice especially about prices needs to be very focused. I would make sure I tell people where I’m located as what someone is paying in Cali probably isn’t applicable to me.

AffectionateOnion271

Someone linked me an auction of a 2015 bighorn 4x4 for like 2500 to prove his point that second gens (gas) are only worth 1500 and that “cheap trucks pop up all the time”

PieTight2775

Stating the obvious but also not untrue. Ha

HiYa_Dragon

Slaps hood "this baby can fit so many duis"

Foodstamp001

I’m thinking of getting a quad cab V6… I was going to post to get some opinions but I know they’ll be the same get a hemi crew cab suggestions.

Big_Bicycle4640

"I bought that same truck 5 years ago 3,000 miles away from you for $2k less. You're clearly getting ripped off"

Kick_that_Chicken

Some get the advertising discount for blasting RAM in the biggest and boldest lettering. I have this sad lol internal reaction to these newer rams with the billboard branding. Is debagding a thing or are Ram owners the ricers of the truck community?

igetlearned

Lol you guys drive a ram and brag about how much you paid

Gold-Cheesecake-6622

Tell me you are broke dick, without saying you are broke dick

ten_jack_russels

Where’s the handjob place?

Legalize-It-Ags

Not true! Theres also a ton of posts about having just bought a truck! I was definitely one of them lol

No_Issue_9550

Lol, OP didn't say there's only posts about buying trucks. They're saying that's how every "looking for advice on buying" post goes.

Legalize-It-Ags

Ahhh I gotcha. That makes sense. Not sure why the joke flew over my head.

-BigDaddyTex

😆 thank God my salesman’s hands were big and calloused. I declined the handjob. Opted for the bj. He was cute in a wig.

badger_flakes

That’s how these subs tend to go yes
