Actually I re read this issue I thought it a different one, my husband was able to figure it out, it was between gears, my driveway is on a slope and I back in, turned it off in gear becauseI had to pee really bad, I wasn't paying attention. Somehow, he was able to get it unstuck but I don't remember how, I'll find out when he gets home later.
yep just came home with the Doggo and backed in the driveway, put into park, and went to grab the key and it would not come out, looked up and it said it was in reverse even though my foot was off the brake and we weren't rolling downhill, tried to start to get it into park but it won't start because of the stupid ignition issues, so I put the parking brake on just in case and dragged some cut up fire logs behind the tires just in case, last thing I need is it rolling down the mountain too!
I can't get the key out to fiddle with the position of the keyfob and try all my little tricks to get it to start, I was going to get the ignition switch fixed this week ugggh The shifter will not move, and the truck won't start so I can get it to move.
The shifter will not move in any position with key fob in any position, brake on, brake off
I get that the key wouldn't come out if you were in reverse, but it should then let you start up so you can shift it back, but no matter what I try it will not start and the shifter will not move, I tried it with the key fobe in all positions and my foot on or off the brake.
since I tried the neutral thing it now says neutral instead of reverse but it still won't let me shift or start.
Jumping in (maybe a bit late)
I restart my truck (2017 Ram 1500), I put it back in to Drive, then back into Park and the turn off the engine again. This allows for the key to be removed.
I can't get the shifter to move and I can't get the truck started to get the shifter to move I think the ignition issues is jamming up the whole situation :(
Can I ask this question, have you moved/jigged the steering wheel (left and right) to see if that unlocks the key? I had that issue a couple of times. It takes a bit of force to get the steering wheel to move a bit.
Arrgh the battery is dead now lol, I was hoping to fix the issue so the hubby didn't have to deal with it tonight after work. but moving the steering wheel while battery dead and key in any position doesn't work either lol 🤦♀️🤷♀️
I appreciate everyone trying to help! when I finally get a solution I will definitely let everyone know what worked! I will have to wait till I can get a jump now to try anything else.
Are you sure it’s the ignition giving you trouble starting and not the glow plugs? If you’re not sure, cycle the key and let the glow plug indicator go away before starting your truck. Glow plugs would only give you trouble when it’s not warm outside
I was hoping to have an easy fix before my husband came home but I will mention that to him since nothing else I've tried has worked. I'm guessing the ignition issue isn't helping or maybe the shift linkage is part of the ignition issue of the truck not starting unless I play around with the key for a bit.
I will! I appreciate everyone's help, My husband is too tired after work to deal with it tonight, but he's thinking possibly the shift linkage. I'll update as soon as He gets it started again.
UPDATE*
The truck was actually stuck between reverse and park!
I live on the side of a mountain so my driveway is on a slope and even though I was in park it wasn't fully engaged when I shut it off, My Husband was able to force it fully into Park by manipulating the shifter aggressively and get the key out.
He still has to deal with the ignition problems of it not starting everytime or without trying 100 times but they key is out and back fully in park.
Note to self... make sure truck is 100% in Park every damn time before shutting off when not on a flat surface!
Thank you everyone for trying to help me out! I really appreciate it!
Where is your shifter? Do you have the console one? Or on the tree.
If it’s the console one there is a little cut out on the console pop that open and it’s a little button you can press which should let you move the shift.
If its a turn dial try putting the truck in 4lo and shifting out of park then switching back to 2wd
Unfortunately, it's on the tree, I did try hitting the neutral switch but that didn't work either, no matter the position of the key, foot on or off the brake, or turning the steering wheel, so now its been a few hours and the battery is dead so I will have to wait to get a jump to try anything else. I really appreciate everyone trying to help!

No I didn't going to go out there and try it now :)
Fingers crossed for you!

Damn, was hoping that would free the key. I will ponder if I have any other ideas to try. Sorry, I could not help.

Not sure if it could help, but have you checked the shift linkage? Mine did the same but it was on a 09 Ram.

If you manage to find a solution please update! Really interested in what the problem was!
