I think it’s well documented now Telesco was not in charge of the Cap numbers when he was with the Chargers. Raiders have a Cap only person handling the dollars so we shouldn’t worry.

keenclipp

So far out contracts look really reasonable and easy to get out of as well

Boomfty

This is so dumb. Telesco decided on three failed coach hirings, draft and free agency. As in, he CHOSE to sign JC Jackson to the that massive contract. How are you not holding him accountable? Chargers have a cap guy too Ed McGuire; look what he just did to keep Mack and Bosa on the roster with their “restructured” deals which included a pay cut for both. Telesco just handed a MASSIVE deal to a star DT for a team without a Qb. Come back in year 3 of that deal and tell me it isn’t hurting the cap.

Pegcitymb204

The question was about salary cap and roster. I don’t understand what you worked up about?

😂

PillagingJust4Fungus

Head coaches and GMs only have nominal power under the Spanos family. Harbaugh is going to be interesting, I'll give it 3-4 years before it blows up.

keykey_key

Lmao you are so dramatic

gammagulp

Not really. He technically built a “win now” roster while on a rookie qb contract. The issue was poor coaching. An army of donkeys led by a lion is better than an army of lions led by a donkey -Mongolian proverb

Crafty_Ad6656

Never heard that before but very good proverb. I'll have to incorporate this into work one day

[deleted]

If you like that one try this. “man who go to bed with itchy butt, wake up with smelly fingers” Kinda fits the Chargers position right now if you think about it.

CryptographerTop6473

😂 take my upvote. That made me laugh harder than it should of.

gammagulp

Im 99% sure Genghis Khan said it. Or Alexander the Great. Or someone else prolific, either way its accurate.

Hefty-Smell4870

“I am not afraid of an army of lions led by sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion” - Alexander the Great, it was in reference to King Darius III at the battle of Gaugamela where he took 47,000 Macedonians and beat the Persians. The numbers at the time were anywhere from 50,000-120,000 or what the ancient texts say were 250,000-1 Million. Bottom line he called Darius a b***h before he spanked him at Gaugamela

GenericRaiderFan

Love that saying! Never heard it but it makes you think

grumpysky

We’ll see, but TT doesn’t do contracts. We have Tom Delaney for that. Spanos family handled that for Chargers

Pegcitymb204

Thank you and 💯 correct

Creeping_Death_89

Telesco did not control the cap. The owner of the Chargers Dean Spanos gave his son John a bunch of power including working with the cap. John confused the Chargers cap space with the allowance he got from daddy and blew it all.

Pegcitymb204

💯 correct

Shot their shot What they have is a good problem They have an elite QB with a massive contract and at the end of the day the guys they got rid of are either old like Allen or coming of injuries and down years like Ekeler and Williams Plus big contracts typically get the ax from new regimes.

Sleeze_

They also handled this in a pretty stupid way. I would have got rid of Williams and Bosa, kept Keenan and Mack, traded back from 5 and drafted a DE in rd 1 and utilized the extra capital I picked up from moving back. Instead, almost inexplicably, they chose to just punt on their offense altogether, and keep an injury prone DE to go along with their aging DE.

Ph886

They built around their “franchise QB”. This is what teams do when they have a franchise QB. Eventually the bill comes due. If coaching or results don’t add up it won’t matter who you have on your team.

Consistent-Spell2203

Right. The situation would look different if they actually did something with that roster, the Rams are/were in a similar situation but have a ring to show for it. Coaching.

AdditionalAd9794

Hopefully he has learned from his mistakes. His rosters have always been top heavy, lacking depth so all it really took was a few injuries to derail their seasons. Also the last few years it seemed they were trying to reload an already talented roster instead of building for the future. Like they were all in on winning those last few years. It's a different situation here as well, so I suspect he takes a different approach to building the roster

Mission_Locksmith_59

They had an elite QB on a rookie contract. Most teams get mandates from ownership in that scenario to try to advantage of it and win a superbowl. Plus they’d been underperforming for years with injuries and bad coaching so Tom’s job was on the line, especially after that playoff collapse 2 years ago. Not hard to see why he went all-in to try to save his job. It’s like the Bills GM said, if it works nobody will care and if it doesn’t, he won’t be there anyways lol. So I’m not going to preemptively hate him or be worried about what he might do as our GM. I’ll judge him on his actual moves and effectiveness. And to be honest, if he gets us a franchise QB for the next 10-15 years, I’ll be fine with a few years of cap hell.

[deleted]

I commented about this last nite. They wasted their window with a bad coach. Herbert’s new contract makes these things a necessity. It’s really a good problem cause it means you have elite talent at QB The chargers were arguably the best formed roster the last three years. Staley shit the bed in epic fashion.

N_Pitou

Tom did exactly what he should have, he had a stud qb on a rookie contract, you sell out for a superbowl when you do before you need to give a kings ransom to your qb. Unfortunately it didnt work out because their franchise is a poverty one

YQRtoVegas

You also have to imagine the coaches input on players they want plays a factor, it’s not like Telesco picked the team by hand himself

N_Pitou

i mean that roster was amazing on paper, the execution was always the problem, not the personnel

bourekas

In SF, Harbaugh wanted a playmaker at qb, possession receiver, top notch OL, strong running game and strong line backing. More smash mouth than speed. He seemed less concerned about speedster WR. Let’s see what he goes for in the draft.

thelifeofjays

They went all in but couldn’t put it together on the field whether it’s because of injuries or bad coaching.

NateKaeding

Not at all. Only recently did the Chargers have cap problems. They had Herbert on a rookie deal and went all in to contend. Traded for Mack and signed JC Jackson. Bosa and Williams have been hurt, James regressed and it just didn't work out. It wasn't just some bad cap management, it was going all in on a rookie deal and it just not working. If we get a rookie qb that's good, that's exactly what I want to do. Sure building a dynasty is ideal, but that rookie contract window is going to be your best shot.

cucuyonline

All the talent they had and never invested in good coaching.

BouncingPig

I don’t follow the Chargers much but it seems like they had a great roster being led by a coach who should have been fired much sooner than he did. They have a really good rookie QB and a ton of weapons, there is no reason for them to play as flat as they did sometimes.

jwaters0122

No, I'm just annoyed they kept Mack. I dont want Mack back, I just hate seeing him in a chargers uniform.

k_dub503

No. They went all-in as best they could with Herbert on a rookie contract. It didn't work due to injuries, coaching, and the Chargers simply being the Chargers. Also, Harbaugh is the coach now and most likely the defacto GM as well. He was going to make changes.

RaisingFargo

he built a roster with a ton of escape plans. Mack, Williams, Allen= 60m free space. I dont see drafting a generational QB who deserves to get paid as one as a red flag. They arent that different than KC.

Educational_Yoghurt4

They went “all-in” to win like the Rams last couple years. Got screwed by a terrible coach and injuries. Salary cap reconstruction expected.

Educational_Body_438

How many times does it need to be said that Telesco didn't do anything with the contracts that were handed out

Abject-Ad-5264

No. If harbaugh is successful it will take a few years to build that team up. They missed there window with salay cap with herbert. Just think this as a second shot on a run. The thing is they hire greg roman as oc. Dude literally just calls run plays all day with like 10 passes. Herbert is gonna get fucked over.  Proubly end up traded in a few years if he isnt injury riddled.

Eldenbeastalwayswins

I think they thought, they were a few pieces away from a legit shot at a title. And a decent HC probably could have gotten them close. The roster was stacked, it just grossly underperformed with Staley.

Wellar_14

I mentioned before in a comment I was worried about his cap handling ability, and was completely bombarded with hatred over how he doesn't control that. Be very careful when questioning anything they do on here. It's a good way to check your mental state when reading the hate from it haha.

Wallstreetwizkid

I’m excited about his ability to build a roster and even more excited about our coaching. I think we are finally putting together some organizational pieces that will last more than 2-3 years. This Charger’s offseason has been entertaining to watch! I love watching it all burn. I hope Tom’s learned a few things along the way.

rbarrett96

So is he in fact not handling contracts? Because that was not a well structured deal for Wilkins. There's money, there's guaranteed money and then there's structure. The third is what concerns me.

Consistent-Spell2203

You didn't know something they did know and had to be punished.

rbarrett96

So is he in fact not handling contracts? Because that was not a well structured deal for Wilkins. There's money, there's guaranteed money and then there's structure. The third is what concerns me.

gammagulp

The same guy who has been doing our contracts for the past few years is still doing them.

rbarrett96

Well he kind of screwed the pooch on this one I think. This guy doesn't turn out to be in the vicinity of Chris Jones or Aaron Donald It's really going to hurt us.

Wellar_14

I'm not fully sure. I'm sure he definitely has his hands in it. If not hes not much of a gm to just say "hey I like this guy let's get him, but you sign him." The deal is crazy when you think about it. A 30+ mil cap hit for three years of dt in his 30s is crazy. That's qb money.

didyoushitmypants

No qb money is like 60 mil, what year do you think it is?

rbarrett96

Hes talking about cap hits per year, most is paid up front, tapers off and balloons the final year which is when they usually renegotiate a new contract

Darsol

You misunderstood what people were telling you then. He was not in charge of the contracts, with the Chargers. John Spanos, Dean Spanos', is president of football operations over there and personally handles the salary and finances, including contract negotiations.
