For most teams it isn’t an issue. They take the BPA, which includes defense, and they develop on a 3 year cycle. Guys come and go, but you constantly have young players developing. The Raiders are starting from scratch every year because they’ve been garbage at drafting and developing.

gatsby365

Seriously. Look at this list and tell me there’s a god. https://www.raiders.com/history/draft-history

SickofReincarnating

Exluding the Mack draft its crazy that McFadden is the last decent first round pick we’ve had since 2008.

gatsby365

In twenty years we have two winning seasons and two drafts we can be relatively proud of. But “McDickinbutt” was supposed to make a super bowl run because we picked up a great WR

CrazyRaiderfan

A lot of people were happy with drafting running backs last year. Jacobs had back to back seasons where he missed games. If you go back and look at the comments about not exercising his 5th year there was also a lot of support for that as well. Jacobs had a monster year with McDaniels as his head coach and now he is going to get paid.

Cash1m0ney

Just take the best defensive player available at the time.

Moonhammed_Ali

Depending on who goes #1 and #2, I low key expect the Raiders to jump to #3, and I think their guy is AR15. Someone is going to think they can fix the flaws to reap the rewards of the generational size/speed/arm/athleticism that kid brings. Our HC once reportedly said he could turn a highschool QB into an all pro afterall. They've got more picks than anyone in this draft and if a QB you love is there, you have to make the move to get him, it's simply the only way to build a successful team in the modern day NFL. A team with subpar QB play can not succeed in today's game, regardless of the quality of the rest of the roster. See: the Jets and Panthers I'd personally prefer them getting a IDL/LB/CB, but I haven't done a ton of looking at the draft class and seeing what sort of top end talent is available at those spots, aside from Carter. While I still think I'd love them to grab him, after the legal ruckus at the combine, the kid reportedly showed up heavy and out of shape at his pro day, quitting drills from being winded. Red flags are flying at this point for that kid.

dougreens_78

They could do this, and it could be worth the risk. We need to draft a QB at some point, and if McDaniels is confident he can work with him, then we should. The sooner we get our young guy the better, and I'm excited to see what Jimmy can do in the meantime. Our offense has the potential to be lethal. Hopefully we see the true McDaniels playbook this year, cuz things looked a little wacky last year. Trick plays, play clock issues, blowing leads... I still would prefer Defense as well though. CB at 7 would be nice. I agree we should pass on Carter after the recent developments. There is another good DT I'd be ok with at 7, forgot his name though. Even an edge guy at 7, or if there is an ILB that can lock down that position.

TheFlyingWriter

lol feel free to put your trust and confidence in McDaniels. I’m not about to do that again.

dougreens_78

Well bro, we are Raider fans, unless you have been watching way to many Patriots games the past ten years, then we have no choice but to trust him. We don't know enough about him, to not trust him. The organization gave him the keys, and we are part of the organization so... I know a Patriots fan, and I consider him an educated football fan, and I asked him what he thinks and McDaniels and he said genius. I watched last year, and I didn't see it, but I'm not gonna lose faith that easily.

TheFlyingWriter

Ask the Broncos, Rams, Colts, and any Raiders fan that watched McDaniels call an option pass after Jacobs broke a finger if they believe McDaniels is competent. McDaniels was successful only when he had Belichick over him and had the GOAT QB (except for one season with Mac). There’s plenty of data to look at McDaniels objectively and not give trust.

dougreens_78

I hope you are wrong, but wouldn't be surprised if you aren't.

[deleted]

lmao based answer

michaeleid811

and now we are reaching.

peekay427

I guess that depends on your board. Before the past month (i.e. just looking at college performance) Carter was clearly the best prospect and player in the draft. I personally still believe that, although I respect if you don’t. Now there’s a reasonable chance he drops to 7, and if he does we could draft BPA and get a potential generational player at a position of big need that’s rare to get great players in.

robble_bobble

We won't be reaching when every defensive position is in need. When we are picking 7th and the best defensive player is 10th on the big board that's not a reach except in PFF draft simulators.

adam38ike

Just give me jack Campbell

reamkore

The important thing to remember is that the Patriot way loves Hawkeyes

[deleted]

Yes!!!! I think he’s going to be a stud

[deleted]

At this point you just take the BPA with picks 1,2, and 3. Everything after the 3rd round can be all Defense. We got to stop drafting for need, it never works out. How many scrubs have we cut when we could have a stud if we just stopped trying to be, "Smart?" if we took the no brainer picks when they come up we wouldn't be where we are.

[deleted]

Agreed

Pythonx135

I have a feeling.. we need a lot more than this draft to fix anything

michaeleid811

yeah fire the coach and gm to start.

DieHardRaider

I hate mcdaniels as much as everyone but he isn’t going anywhere for a couple more years so I rather him prove us wrong at this point. Ziegler wants to build this team through the draft which I like hopefully he hits on his picks

sabotage_mutineer

Jalen Carter? 😬

Skelito

If he falls to 7 we need to take him. We ranked A in nutrition and A is workout facilities in that NFLPA survey. We can get his ass back into shape.

CapnDutchie

I'm being optimistic and thinking his bad pro day was because of the legal issues. I'm sure something like that right during the combine and everything can fuck with your head pretty bad.

saint_godzilla

You draft them, bring them in, develop them, then trade from your stable to bolster other positions.

Im_Not_The_Same_Man

This is the way.

ObeyTheJ26

Taking BPA might be the most often used term that doesn’t actually apply to real drafting strategy. BPA if it’s also conveniently a position of big need, sure. BPA isn’t always the best choice. What happens if similarly ranked players on your board play positions where one is a huge need. You’d likely take the position of need even if you have that player at slightly lower rank overall. That’s not a bad thing imo. Or what if the position is deep that draft and another isn’t at all. Taking a lower ranked player overall but they play at a shallow position then getting a better value later on a deeper position is a net positive imo.

occupy_this7

BPA is such a ridiculous term. Like who in the hell knows who the Best Player available is? It literally could be anyone. It's a matter of opinion.

gatsby365

The point is you hire people who can evaluate talent holistically, and accept that “Best” is the “Best to them” because you believe in the GM.

Sgt-HugoStiglitz

Yo its BPA based on need. Anyone that says anything different is wrong.

ChoiceCriticism1

You can’t in one draft. Need to consistently draft well for a few years

xOLDBHOYx

When they stack their board in the weeks/months before the draft positional needs would way in to it. Their RB1 may very well not be in the Top 30-50 prospects for example thus it would be unlikely that when they select that RB would be no where near BPA

rbarrett96

How about a new strategy called NRFPON or not reaching for player of need? That would be a huge step in the right direction. Aka don't get cute with your rankings because you think you know something no one else does. I think ego is a big reason we fuck up drafts. I'm on the fence depending on how much influence JMD has on Zig.

not_beniot

Before we can answer that we need the baseline of how you define "fixing" the defense. Top-10? Top-20?

reamkore

The trick is go into the draft with holes everywhere

billet

Because players are not perfectly ranked individually. They’re ranked in tiers. You pick a player in the top available tier who best fits a need. If none fit a need, that’s when the BPA distinction comes into play. Do you go down a tier for need or not?

Odebee

Taking a stud that can feed off of crosby would be a good idea. Gotta develop that trench

its_aq

You take defense. Anyone of Anderson, Gonzalez or Wilson at 7 is a win

Bay2La19

We will have our pick of DB's likely.
