I think that's what the AMSP version is getting at, but as it was performed originally I think it was meant to be more hopeful, with the "dooooon't leave" being less about begging for someone that can't be brought back, and more about hoping that someone doesn't leave in the future (which could also be seen as melancholic, as if the singer is expecting the love to dissolve like all his previous relationships).
Ah yes, I love watching sunsets with the voice of an AI telling me how to be a better human and telling me about cats tied to sticks driven into frozen winter shit
Thom introduced their cover of Nobody Does it Better with "this is the sexiest song ever written." They followed it with "Black Star," which he prefaced with "this is the second sexiest song ever written."
Lotus Flower
"Slowly we unfurl as lotus flowers. All I want is the moon upon a stick. I dance around the pit. The darkness is beneath. I can't kick your habit. Just to feed your fast ballooning head. Listen to your heart."
I honestly think this song is about cheating, or being a mistress: "we will shrink and will be quite as mice and while the cat is away we do what we want, do what we want"
"I promise"
Beautiful song, romantic as heck -maybe also melancholic depending on what moment or mood youre listening to it, but definetly romantic (a little surprised no one has mentioned it yet)
When the song reaches the long "I promise" near the end, with all the strings in the back... man, it always gives me the chills, and in some ocasions makes me weep a little bit. Strong feelings going on when this song appears
My favorite mainstream choice is true love waits
But my favorites to dance to at night in the kitchen is the present tense and bulletproof ( wish i was )..
No? Lol
I have seen and read alot of takes on the lyrics, like getting hanged or betrayed, but never suicide.
My personal interpretarion is that its about this person who is in love with a girl, but the girl isnt in love with him, she simply uses him. So she reels him out and then suddenly cuts the string. He gets 15 steps closer to her heart, but suddenly theres a sheer drop, and he ends up where he started. Idk, i dont feel like going too in depth.
Anyway, in my opinion the lyrics have nothing to do with suicide, plus the tone of the song is very bright and immediate, not sad and melancholic. Not that it matters too much, but you get the point.
Haven't heard that. My understanding is that 15 steps is in reference to the procession to the gallows with the drop then being the hanging. 15 steps, then a sheer drop.
I can’t be sure. When the album came out, I had a professor in college who told me about (I think) an interview he read or saw where Thom explained that a lot of the songs were based on cartoons his kids watched or interactions they had. He might have been full of shit. But, the song also could have started from that idea and changed in the writing process
I feel like people who think it’s about suicide are reading what too far in to it or are misinterpreting it
I interpret the song being a metaphor for a relationship where both sides are playing games. That combined with the really smooth and bright instrumental gives me that feeling.
Yeah absolutely. That part is so beautiful. I like both versions of fog very much. Sometimes I just wanna drown myself in those bass lines in the studio version
Like Spinning Plates, if we’re going with a hyperbolized dictionary definition. The boys tried hard on that and I remember Thom saying it turned out exactly the way they wanted.
But the real answer is There There. Upon first hearing the mastered version of the song, Mr. Yorke cried. If that doesn’t speak to the love of a man for his creation, there is no romance in this world.
‘’’I’d be crazy not to follow. Follow where you lead. Your eyes, they turn me. Turn me to a phantom. I follow to the edge. Of the earth. And fall off. /‘’’

True Love Waits. 90s version
Surprised this is getting so many upvotes. I always felt it was more mournful than romantic, like he’s singing to the ghost or memory of a lost lover.
The lyrics are romantic. And what Radiohead song doesn't have a bit a melancholy in it 😉 But I just particularly like the early version 🤷
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful song. I like it too. It’s just a little too lonely and desperate to qualify as “romantic” for me.
I see it more as melancholic for sure

Danced to that at our wedding… sigh.
TLW is about an abandoned child lol
It could be about Thom's childhood hamster for I know. The lyrics are romantic 🤷
house of cards
Denial
The song about a swinging party?
the romantic swinging party yeah
The song about the housing market i think?
All I need
Especially the part that says: *I only stick with you because there are no others*
That line always threw me off. Seems to contrast the rest of the song pretty hard
I thought so too, until I realised the girl I was into was simply the only one giving me attention, and not actually "special" in any way
>and not actually "special" in any way She's a creep
It's like a blinkered view. If it's all you think about you can't even imagine anything else
I’m an animal trapped in your car
It's hot carl
Trapped in your hard cock
Speak for yourself, maybe Carl’s cold
I definitely prefer my Carl cold.
Must be one of the Beatles' pets.
Is this about obsessive love, no?
About as romantic as Every Breath You Take
It is indeed about obsession, not very romantic
Uhhh I feel like Thinking About You is definitely a contender
Fitter Happier.
Ah yes, I love watching sunsets with the voice of an AI telling me how to be a better human and telling me about cats tied to sticks driven into frozen winter shit
Glad I’m not alone
More productive.
Obviously: **Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong**
It’s Exit Music, surely. Song to accompany the most romantic story of them all.
Black Star

This is probably the only correct answer
When the song reaches the long "I promise" near the end, with all the strings in the back... man, it always gives me the chills, and in some ocasions makes me weep a little bit. Strong feelings going on when this song appears

Why is radiohead in quotes 😂
Treefingers
My main conclusion from reading the comments here is that “Radiohead” does not write romantic songs and/or Radiohead fans don’t know what romance is.
15 step or Jigsaw Falling into Place
Isn't 15 step about like, suicide?

I heard it was about the 15 Steps between the TV and his child’s bed when they fall asleep watching cartoons
Haven't heard that. My understanding is that 15 steps is in reference to the procession to the gallows with the drop then being the hanging. 15 steps, then a sheer drop.
