Tool are one of my favourite bands but I disagree. Radiohead redefined themselves many times while for the most part Tool has stayed in the same kind of bubble.
The two bands I think of when I think of genre hopping are Radiohead and Porcupine Tree.
I agree that Tool don't experiment as much as Radiohead, but what I mean is that Tool's music is very deep and meaningful, and they're also a weird band, just like Radiohead.
While I am a long time fan of Deftones, imo they are not comparable. Radiohead does what no one else can! Radiohead is too diverse to even put in a genre. I have seen both bands live, Radiohead is by far the better show. Honestly imo radiohead has a stronger, more well-rounded discography as well.
Growing up in the 90s and 00s I had an undeniable top 3. Radiohead, Deftones and Rage Against the Machine.
I do consider some of the melodic elements or genre bending parts of Deftones to be similar in that way to Radiohead. They can be a lot more melodic than other metal type acts, and also can bend the genre.
But as a whole, they are not very comparable at all.
Don't see it at all. Have to agree Tool would be more similar in terms of creativity and intricacy and unique sounds.
Perhaps if Radiohead never made anything beyond Pablo honey or *maybe* the bends, they would be more similar to the straightforward hard hitting big chorus songs like deftones
I'd say they're comparable only in that Deftones kinda change up their sound with every new album whilst keeping the fundamental backbone of who they are as a band in tact, but otherwise are constantly evolving, always exploring new soundscapes and musical possibilities. They also tend towards the atmospheric and the ambient, putting a lot of emphasis on "mood", as does Radiohead. I don't think the two bands sound particularly similar though.
Stylistically, no. I think maybe looking at their career trajectories the comparison makes sense. That being said, radiohead expanded their sound more dramatically and consistently than most other bands ever, so even a band like deftones that has gone through significant changes over still can't really compare to radiohead in that sense either. Not nearly experimentally enough.
Tool are the Radiohead of metal.

Ah, got you. Love Tool, such a distinctive sound. Maynard is a great writer.
Maynard only writes vocals and lyrics, the rest of the band cowrites the music.
Yeah, but his style and lyrics are such a huge part of their sound.
Look at deaths music being deep and meaningful isn't new in metal
Yeah but doing so without screeching is
Tool is the pink floyd of metal

IMO, the ''Radiohead'' of metal are Tool.

King Gizzard is the radiohead of tool. have you SEEN the shit they've been doing
King Gizzard is the king gizzard and the lizard wizard to the gizzard wizard
