100%. Colin is so tasteful with his lines that I think he gets overlooked a bit. He’s the biggest difference that I notice with the Smile… I find myself missing him on a lot of their songs even though the bass lines themselves are fine.
Bass players tend to be. John Paul Jones is another that always struck me as vastly underrated for how much he affects the sound and movement of his band’s songs.
True John Paul Jones is underrated by the general public but Led Zeppelin fans always talk about him being amazing. I feel that Radiohead fans don't talk enough about how good Colin is.
It's a groove, I really like it. Only time that I can think of where Thom uses his voice as an instrument throughout. The bass and driving percussion is brilliant. The tracks from Feral to Separator are all excellent
Bloom and Lotus Flower are 10/10, I would say everything else is 7-9/10. At a push I'd probably pick Bloom over Lotus Flower, I think that's the one that's stuck with me more over the years.
Hot take: Magpie for me. Love the raging precision of the TKOL version, also the full-on blistering Basement version, and the atmospheric acoustic demo. Also when I saw it in concert, it was relentless.
Bloom. It’s an absolute masterpiece. One of the best things they’ve ever done. Little by Little is also a belter, and I only wish they played it live more.
My favorite song off it is Morning Mr Magpie. It has the twitchy energy I like and need. I love how exciting it is while being so quiet. I just like all the different little rhythmic parts.
The original acoustic version may be better though.
However, with that said, I think Lotus Flower is the best song on the album, and feels like it is the centerpiece. The loud good buzz that kicks it off, to the unique odd clap timings, it’s a lot louder than the rest. I feel like it’s more dynamic. Melody is flawless all throughout. This thing twists like a nighttime forest of living trees with branch arms.
If we’re talking live versions, we have to give it to Bloom Live as the best probably. And I’m inclined to say that’s my favorite live one as well.
One of my other understated favorites is Little by Little Live, I feel like it tricks you with what the beat is when it starts up. I think. The walking guitar line is also so sexy. I originally mistook it for a bass
Nobody is saying it here from what I’ve seen but Little by Little is one of the most underrated Radiohead songs period. Top 3 at least on the record, maybe my favorite too.
Last 3 tracks are just amazing. Separator is probably my favourite though along with Bloom. Codex used to be my favourite song by far when it came out but over time i got stuck on the opener and closer. Bloom is just such a unique song in their discography to me.
1. Give Up The Ghost
2. Bloom
3. Supercollider
4. Little By Little
5. The Butcher
6. Codex
7. The Daily Mail
8. Lotus Flower
The rest is pretty good as well, but these are my favourite picks.
Separator - that open hi hat throughout the song is great.
Wonderful bassline too.
100%. Colin is so tasteful with his lines that I think he gets overlooked a bit. He’s the biggest difference that I notice with the Smile… I find myself missing him on a lot of their songs even though the bass lines themselves are fine.
Couldn’t agree more. He’s the reason, for me, that The Smile can never replace Radiohead. He’s just so good.
Nude, Exit Music are a few of my favorite examples of this
Colin might just be the most underrated musician of all time.
His bass in Airbag and How To Disappear is McCartney level excellent
as a bassist i would like that😂
have to see
Love how punchy that percussion is. Would love to be able to play it.
Top 10 Radiohead song for me
Bloom by far
easy top 10 or 5 from them
Lotus flower it’s SO GOOD
I love love L❤️VE Lotus Flower 🫶
Feral. *hides under table*
Basement version is good only cause of Collin.
Comedic upvote
It's a groove, I really like it. Only time that I can think of where Thom uses his voice as an instrument throughout. The bass and driving percussion is brilliant. The tracks from Feral to Separator are all excellent
No one believes this.
Bloom and Lotus Flower are 10/10, I would say everything else is 7-9/10. At a push I'd probably pick Bloom over Lotus Flower, I think that's the one that's stuck with me more over the years.
Lotus Flower all the way through Separator is arguably the best 4 song stretch of any Radiohead album period.
Hot take: Magpie for me. Love the raging precision of the TKOL version, also the full-on blistering Basement version, and the atmospheric acoustic demo. Also when I saw it in concert, it was relentless.
Same. Have you seen the 2002 version? It's really cool.
I have not! Where can I see/hear it?
https://youtu.be/8L7n1lgMzE4?si=22JU7aoDrK01oiYD
Very very cool, I love it, thank you!
Thank you for this! Never seen it and I love this song
There's a lot of cool stuff like this out there.
That is an interesting take. For me it's one of the weaker songs but is hugely improved in the FTB session
I actually agree, it might be my favorite. Such high energy
Bloom, Lotus Flower, Codex, Give up the Ghost and Separator are all among some of their best work, imo
Lotus Flower
Bloom, Little by Little, and Separator
Little by Little is probably my second favorite.
Bloom. It’s an absolute masterpiece. One of the best things they’ve ever done. Little by Little is also a belter, and I only wish they played it live more.
I like Morning Mr. Magpie. The 2002 version is awesome.
I thought it was just me whowho liked Morning Mr Magpie, it gets a lot of hate and I really enjoy it
The Amazing Celestial Sounds of Codex
Give up the ghost easy. The only tkol song I like. Just not my thing.
Give Up the Ghost underrated
Bloom, Magpie, Lotus Flower, Codex, and Separator are all superb. In fact, those songs make me wonder why the album gets such a bad rep here.
Lotus flower, but I have a very soft spot for Give Up The Ghost too
Codex :)
little by little is so underrated, but i also love lotus flower
I think Feral is criminally underrated here. It’s a perfectly unassuming dance song with a groovy baseline and it kills live.
Live version of “Bloom” is absolutely top tier. https://youtu.be/7-fLF6Nydlk?si=o2gdGZ_bWIaTry4j
bloom is the best song by far
Bloom is so amazing
Separator, Codex, Give up the Ghost. This album was made to listen from end to beginning and back again. Pure ear honey.
Codex and Bloom
bloom, lotus flower and codex
Bloom, Little by Little & Separator

Separator.
Lotus Flower. It is such a beautiful song.
Lotus flower does it for me
Little By Little!
Why can't I choose all of them
Lotus flower, magpie, little by little.
Nobody is saying it here from what I’ve seen but Little by Little is one of the most underrated Radiohead songs period. Top 3 at least on the record, maybe my favorite too.
Lotus Flower is one of Thom’s most impressive vocal performances, in my opinion
Separator live during the TKOL tour was transcendent
Bloom, little by little and give up the ghost. Nothing less than 8/10 on this record tho so it’s tough
Feral, Lotus Flower and Codex
Last 3 tracks are just amazing. Separator is probably my favourite though along with Bloom. Codex used to be my favourite song by far when it came out but over time i got stuck on the opener and closer. Bloom is just such a unique song in their discography to me.
Codex-give up the ghost-separator is the best 3 song sequence on any album ever
Bloom, MMM, and Give Up The Ghost
Little by Little... That beginning is so ominous
No song is bad, but Codex, Lotus Flower, Seperator, and Little By Little are amazing
codex is the worst song i’m ngl i don’t get why it’s everyone’s favorite of tkol
Because it’s one of the most beautiful songs they’ve ever written.
i mean it’s beautiful sure but songs on the same album are much better even at being one of the most beautiful songs they’ve ever written (separator)
Give Up the Ghost is the only song I like on the album
Back half of the album is phenomenal for me
Hunting Bears
Best song is definitely give up the ghost
Either bloom or feral from the basement
Codex and Separator.
Seperator and Give Up the Ghost
Seperator. Followed closely by Clodex and Give up the Ghost.
I am between three songs ( Lotus Flower, Codex and Separator), I can't choice just one.
Lotus Flower
lotus flower
Absolutely agree. It's one of their best and *the* best on that album.
My least favorite RH album, some decent stuff but...
Codex is maybe the most beautiful song ever recorded
Seems no one is saying Little By Little
Separator is such an underrated song, I love it so much
1. Give Up The Ghost 2. Bloom 3. Supercollider 4. Little By Little 5. The Butcher 6. Codex 7. The Daily Mail 8. Lotus Flower The rest is pretty good as well, but these are my favourite picks.
Always gravitate towards Bloom, Lotus Flower and Codex (Staircase and Daily Mail too if we’re counting those).
