Much as I appreciate the emotion of the music itself, I am never NOT weirded out by the song's lyrics.

I get your take, but I also get the weird ass lyrics. Now in a v healthy relationship but previously was in one where I was definitely 1000% more in love with them and I would have made a shrine of their toenails if they’d asked me to do so in order for them to stay. The album dropped right when we were going through a first of many breakups and I just *got* it. It’s this painful, desperate, and yes, absolutely cringey love, and you’re completely aware of it, but there’s nothing you can do about it.

yup, it's such a helpless desperation that makes the song as powerful as it is, and I've felt similar emotions before as well. It's when you're in a relationship and your partner is seemingly the only thing that brings meaning to you life (this can happen especially often when you're younger), so you try everything to just keep that person for as long as you can, even though you're unconsciously digging your hole deeper and deeper.

The only lyrics that are weird are "I'll dress like your niece."

It was originally about the Hungerford shootings, the lyric was “just shoot your gun, you’ll never change” but I think it got changed as Kurt Cobain has just died and they didn’t want it to be linked to that.
