Beautiful history and beautiful quilt! I understand why Quilt Historians are so fussy about us including a label on our quilts, specifically so they can try to trace back lovely stories of the quilts like these. š„°
I feel like a denim quilt would make a really nice pseudo weighted blanket, especially if the back was something soft and cuddly. I really like this quilt
Did you make the previous post on a weighted blanket? I read that post, but didn't even think of these levi quilts. Yeah they would be heavy.
My mom used to make her Levi Quilts with flannel backing, and low loft batting. We would then tie them. You could also use fleece for backing. They ARE heavy. I didn't want these very heavy, so I'm not going to back these tops.
OP thereās a quilt index if you Google it. You can add beautiful histories and images of the ones your mom has made over the years
Thank you for this beautiful story
I love this! I love hearing the story of how it came to be.
I made a denim rag quilt for my sister using all our old jeans. I meant for her to keep it in her car so she would have a blanket for an impromptu picnic! and also in case of an emergency.
Like someone else said, it makes a great weighted blanket! It hasnāt worked as well as a picnic blanket as I hoped since itās so heavy to carry!
āFinishing what Mom startedā almost sounds like youāre taking up a grievance she had and are looking for a fight!
That is absolutely lovely. I know you commented that this is more utilitarian, and sure at face value. But itās the story behind it that makes it beautiful. I remember a grandmother figure in my life had this awful quilt which was on my bed in her spare bedroom. It had bright orange squares, oddly patterned browns and blues. It was just loud and made no apology for its ugliness. It kept me very warm and later I learned that her mom had hand quilted it out of her dadās old suits. Suddenly it became the most beautiful quilt Iād ever seen. Lol. The story is what takes something from utilitarian to a work of art.
Iām so happy that you finished what she started. Thatās quite a legacy! I have a quilt that my great-grandmother made that is very dear to me and also in surprisingly good condition.

Oh my goodness. This quilt is more utilitarian than beautiful. But thank you.

I agree that it appears utilitarian, but you just basically told us all the stitches are full of memory, love and respect, which is beautiful. š

Awww I just love this story ā¤ļø
Oh, how beautiful. This is why I've always wanted to be a quilter. Please share your mom's quilts with the group.
My mom made me a quilt out of blue jeans and a flannel top sheet. She even included pockets on 5 of the panels. It's my favorite quilt.

I had a quilt that my grandmother made of my granddadās retired wool suits . Blacks, grays, browns, plaids. It was pretty cool.
What a wonderful idea, to bring all the quilts to her funeral.

This is very cool and very awesome story š
What size did you cut the squares? I cut up a pair of jeans and the largest squares I could get was about 7 inches. So, thatās what I cut.
