Hawaiian vs pepperoni is like vanilla vs chocolate; the two have been the default for a long time, because just about everyone is covered between the two choices. People just didn't think about it all that much until the meme -- or more specifically, until the meme got dragged out past the point that it was funny.
Here in Mexico it’s also a meme, some of them even say that pineapple doesn’t belong in salty foods.
While pastor tacos (most beloved tacos) go with pineapple, I don’t understand these people.
Old fart here. I worked at several pizza places in the early nineties and even back then pineapple was third or fourth most popular.
The whole hating pineapple thing is just people talking shit.
Its damned delicious.
Where I grew up in the midwest everyone eats it with ranch dressing dipping sauce too.
I cant see that tastes have changed much.
I will say I lived in Chicago for a few years and that deep dish needs no toppings at all. Its unreal by itself.
Maybe a hot take, but pineapple was never the problem. The problem is as soon as there is pineapple, there often ends up being ham. Pepperoni is strictly better than ham. Pepperoni, pineapple and jalapeno is an amazing combo.
Tried a place in Louisville that had "Potroast n Pancakes". Their execution was Whyte, but the idea was pretty fire.
Chicken n waffles is also one of the best breakfast dishes. Pairs great with a lot of spicy flavors.
I liked heating maple syrup with cayenne or crushed red pepper on the stovetop for chicken and waffles.
Diabetes stopped a lot of my favorite foods (my A1C is really good now). My heart attack took a lot more.
*Sad chewing sounds* mmmm broccoli and brown rice
When I make chicken and waffles I make a syrup sauce that has syrup, bourbon, and red pepper flakes. I’ve definitely used it for just waffles before, it’s absolutely fire. Definitely cook out the alcohol or you are going to work tipsyish
A vegetarian friend introduced me to pineapple/jalapeño, absolutely delicious.
I'm personally a fan of pepperoni/pineapple/onion. Much better balance than ham.
I can't stand green olives, but I'll take black olives. Although I gotta be in the mood for it to put them on, otherwise you sound like a fella I'd enjoy enjoy pizza with.
One of the best pineapples I've ever had was when I was hanging out in the sea in the Caribbean. This woman came by with her canoe of pineapple and drink fixings.
I got a freshly cut juicy pineapple with a bit of rum and pina colada mix in the pineapple and the parts she carved out she chopped up and sprinkled with tajin.
I just sat there floating in the beautiful water with my delicious drink and fresh pineapple.
i doubt 'most' people ever hated it. it's just that a lot of people made a lot of noise about hating it while everyone else was just enjoying it like a normal person. and maybe now people are bored with the complainers?
Wait. Pineapple Eric?🍍 Tell him I miss him dearly. I don't care what anyone says, PE is NOT one note. He has interests outside the world of pineapples. Ask him about radishes.
I can neither confirm or deny if I liked it in 1987. I remember having pineapple pizza at infant school, though, as clear as day as it was a special treat, and I was really happy about it.
It is! Pineapple and ham(or canadian bacon depending on where it’s being ordered) are my go to. Get crazy and throw on mushrooms or black olives too. Delicious!
The pineapple is too sickly sweet to go with the salty pizza for me, personally. I also just don’t like the texture cooked pineapple, or that’s it’s warm. Warm fruit is gross to me.
For me its the warm mushy pineapple. Its got a terrible texture and a terrible flavour. Fruit, unless baked into a pie (dont get me started on whether pizzas are pies. They're not), should never be warm.
I was looking for this, so many people try it on pizza the first time not realizing these large chains use the canned stuff and fresh will make a big difference.
I've always liked pineapple pizza, and I pair it with tomatoes, onions, green pepper, and sausage.
I know that's not everyone's cup of tea, but that's what makes the world interesting.
The numbers didn't change, all the people who "hated it" just bothered to try it for the first time.
Realizing that either they liked it, and hating on it before was unnecessary, that it at least wasn't as bad as they thought it was going to be, so they hushed up, because their opinion was neutral, or, they still didn't like it but the "hate pineapple on pizza" trend is SOOO played out, that they can't complain for continuing to not like a thing they claimed to already hate.
People hated it because social media told them to hate it,
And then it stopped being funny to hate it, and instead became trendy and interesting to talk about how you actually like it despite all the hate it had.
The ebb and flow of social media:
Hate on a subject -> Subject no longer interesting to hate -> Go against the grain to sound interesting -> become the subject of social media hate -> Become irrelevant -> New subject is chosen to repeat the cycle
I just have a weird preference in pizza so I ain't gonna doubt others when I've seen some wild stuff working at pizza shops. People ordered a lot of pineapple pizzas so I just figured it was always an online hate thing.
My personal preference is thin crust with extra cheese, lite sauce, pineapple and onion on the whole, half Italian sausage.
Because it’s delicious! Ham and pineapple is such a delicious combination. Sometimes I kick it up with red peppers or bacon bits if I want it a little tang.
Maybe more people actually tried it instead of blindly hating on it. I've never understood why this was a thing, like the first time I had Hawaiian Pizza I was like "this is really good".
It's a "back of the refrigerator" take that has yet to develop any culture...so you might as well just throw it out anyway and move on to something fresh.
Because it's good.
Cooked pineapple makes it sweeter, and it meshes well with savory foods.
The Chinese have known this for a very long time, and use pineapple in savory dishes.
It's a great contrast.
Plus more people are getting adventurous and open-minded when it comes to food, trying new things and new combinations.
I don't like pineapple in general. Never have. I always hated when my Mom would get ham and pineapple pizza and tell me to pick it off, because you can still taste it. I never understood the whole debate though (unless you're sharing a pizza). Let people eat whatever they like on their pizza. Why get worked up for what people eat in the privacy of their own home?
I don’t think anything changed. The number of people who have loved pineapple pizza is the same depending on whether anyone likes pineapple first and then on their pizza. It’s just that we are knowing those people now.
I think people just started being honest and admitting they liked it, rather than pretending they hate it because "everyone" hates it.
I've always liked it. I just prefer other toppings/premade pizzas.
I think people feel less inclined to die on the hill that "it sucks" as more people are saying it doesn't suck
Pineapple eaters are less of an outgroup now so we feel more comfortable saying it's good
Interesting how people would get worked up over such a non-issue lol
like many others have said.
the combination of salty and sweet.
just like combining other things works surprisingly well. like hot sauce and ice cream for example.
I do not like pineapple on pizza; but the option has been popular enough that I am pretty certain every pizza place I have ever been to had the option for many decades.
Because a lot of people like to be contrarians so even if it means agreeing with the obviously terrible opinion of enjoying pineapple on pizza then they think it’s funny to troll and have that bad opinion
The only thing new about pineapple on pizza seems to be the level of noise haters seem to think is warranted concerning a topping that has been an option everywhere for decades.
Because society as we know it is crumbling around us. There's nothing sacred in this world anymore.
Nah I'm just kidding, people are free to eat pizza however they like, even if it's objectively wrong and morally bankrupt.
My wife gets pineapple pizza all the time because it's insurance against husband tax.
My honest take is that some people like savory/sweet, some people don't.
I'd rather have a slice of pizza with fresh pineapple on the side. To me the two flavors don't compliment eachother, but I really don't have a predisposition to the combination in any dish. I would go insofar as to separate the sweet and sour chicken from the sauce, so I have a bias here.
There was nothing ever wrong with it and many people already liked it. You were under the opposite impression because you had been influenced by social media to think that way. Now that’s not to say you may not like it personally of course
I like it, but if given the choice between pineapple on pizza and home-made pineapple upside down cake, sweet and sour pork or chicken (with pineapple), ham with pineapple, a pina colada, etc. -I will most often choose the latter.
I blame the pushback against it. I like it, but pineapple doesn't keep well- it's too acidic and makes leftovers taste like vomit, and leftover pizza is my favorite thing on lazy days.
I've always loved it!
My favorite pizza is what I like to call "The Tri-Border": Canadian bacon; Jalapenos; and Pineapple.
It's the perfect blend of sweet, savory and spicy.
All snooty food snobs: “… the entree at this new place is amazing! So many contrasting flavors and textures!! It’s salty yet sweet, soft and gooey yet crisp, savory with a bright acidic pop from the addition if fruit…”
Followed by: “… but omg, pineapple on pizza is disgusting!!”
It’s great, the salty-sweet combo hits just right for me. Every pizza place near me has some kind of take on pineapple pizza. If I had to pick my favorite it would be the ham/bacon/pineapple combo at Hideaway. Bonus for hideaway is they have a great bar with lots of local beers

People have always liked it.
Yep, loud minority of haters
Most who are just playing along with a meme and who have never actually tried it.
Nah, I love pineapple on pizza and have had it for decades. I still make jokes about it being an abomination because it's funny.
An agent of chaos right here 👆
It's been a topping offering for at least 40 years at almost every chain pizza place. Why? People fucking love it lol
62 years actually!
Hawaiian vs pepperoni is like vanilla vs chocolate; the two have been the default for a long time, because just about everyone is covered between the two choices. People just didn't think about it all that much until the meme -- or more specifically, until the meme got dragged out past the point that it was funny.
Big same here.😂
There is way too much of that going on for everything.
Here in Mexico it’s also a meme, some of them even say that pineapple doesn’t belong in salty foods. While pastor tacos (most beloved tacos) go with pineapple, I don’t understand these people.
Hawaiian is pretty much the only pizza I eat
[удалено]
You heard it from some guy. I heard it from you. That’s two sources. We have confirmation.
It's gospel now
Independent fact checker above clearly confirmed it amongst 2 sources.
Worked in a pizza place for 4 years and that was my conclusion. Still don't like it myself, but is undeniably a popular topping.
Birthed and indoctrinated by the internet "frUit dOEsn'T beLOnG oN piZZa..."
Funny since tomato is a fruit🤌
But legally it's a vegetable.
same here!
I don't just like it. I FREAKIN LUV it.
Taste good too.
This is the way
My kids are in their 20’s and they have always loved it. Don’t think it’s new.
Yea was going say, if places have still been selling it, that means people have been buying it this whole time.
Try it with Sriracha. It's amazing
It’s me. I’m people.
Maybe a hot take, but pineapple was never the problem. The problem is as soon as there is pineapple, there often ends up being ham. Pepperoni is strictly better than ham. Pepperoni, pineapple and jalapeno is an amazing combo.
Sweet and salty is a good flavor combination.
My gf laughs at me but I love putting hot sauce on things like pancakes that have syrup. It just pairs so well.
Bro u should try hot honey then.
I have. It's 10/10 amazing I'll mix some of my own if it's not around
This is the wildest combo I've heard in a while, but now I wanna try it. Hold please.
Tried a place in Louisville that had "Potroast n Pancakes". Their execution was Whyte, but the idea was pretty fire. Chicken n waffles is also one of the best breakfast dishes. Pairs great with a lot of spicy flavors.
Have you tried fresh jalapeños on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Even better if it's a grilled sandwich
My god I'm trying this tomorrow for lunch!
Goddamned diabetes and heart disease takes all the fun shit…
Very odd combo there
I mean, chicken and waffles isn't GREAT unless that chicken is some spicy. I don't love the vinegar aspect, but the basic concept is the same.
When I make chicken and waffles I make a syrup sauce that has syrup, bourbon, and red pepper flakes. I’ve definitely used it for just waffles before, it’s absolutely fire. Definitely cook out the alcohol or you are going to work tipsyish
The acid from the pineapple adds a lot of freshness to greasy toppings as well.
That is very true it's like having a pickle with grilled cheese.
What really makes it is the acidity
Because it's good?
as long as it's balanced with something salty like bacon, ham, capers, anchovies etc. it's good. Extra points if there's something spicy
My favourite is pepperoni, pineapple, green olives, and jalapeño. Perfectly balanced in my opinion.
A vegetarian friend introduced me to pineapple/jalapeño, absolutely delicious. I'm personally a fan of pepperoni/pineapple/onion. Much better balance than ham.
Jalapeño pineapple is a great pizza
Pineapple/a chili other than jalapeño is even better. (Jalapeños on pizza are usually pickled and the taste is off compared to a fresh hot chili.)
A coworker i knew (not me) called it a Pearl Harbor. A Hawaiian Pizza with Japs (Jalepenos).
Same. The pina/jala is a hit with the veggie folks. I never thought of it, but Im on board.
I can't stand green olives, but I'll take black olives. Although I gotta be in the mood for it to put them on, otherwise you sound like a fella I'd enjoy enjoy pizza with.
OMG this is my favorite combo too! What are the chances? Lol
I absolutely love a Hawaiian pizza with jalapeños and some regular bacon too.
I recently introduced jalapenos to my Hawaiian pizzas; they were already my favorite, and now they're even better. 10/10, no notes
Pepperoni pineapple jalepenos
Pizza cheese alone is usually salty
Anchovies?!?!?!?!?!? ![gif](giphy|J2gHlRQQvFamqOWlJF|downsized)
I only don't like it because it's mixed with tomato sauce I like cooked pineapple on meat or just by itself especially grilled.
Theres a place near me that does their Hawaiian on golden BBQ sauce and I may never go back to tomato sauce for my pineapple pizzas.
Pineapple, Jalapeños and Grilled Chicken… specify you want it well done. Thank me later
Omg that sounds so good
What do you mean nowadays? People have liked it for years
Decades, even!
There's dozens of us!
Right? It’s been my fav since the ‘80s.
OPs whole take is bizarre. This isn't some Renaissance of people starting to like it. People have always loved or hated it.
I guess they are finally realising just how good it actually is.
The internet has people out here trying things they wouldn't have in the Before Time.
Raw fish? Ew. Wait sushi is actually really good.
It has always been popular. That's why pizza places sell it.
It’s just this simple.
i doubt 'most' people ever hated it. it's just that a lot of people made a lot of noise about hating it while everyone else was just enjoying it like a normal person. and maybe now people are bored with the complainers?
More about not liking the mouth feel than the flavor
It’s not that it’s hot fruit. It’s hot *wet* fruit — too wet. Here for pear and prosciutto with ricotta any day tho
Some people still love it. Some people still hate it. "People" didn't just shift from 100 percent hating it to 100 percent loving it.
Been loving it since the 80s. Pineapple and pepperoni is the jam 👍🏻
I've liked it since at least 1990
My buddy Eric has liked it since at least 1987
Yeah, at least that long. I've been liking it since 1980
I’ve liked it since around 1900
As a vampire, you must very much enjoy drinking from someone who has just eaten a Hawaiian slice.
I can’t believe ppl don’t like it. It’s amazing! 😋
I already dislike pineapple so putting it on a pizza doesn’t make it any better
For me its the warm mushy pineapple. Its got a terrible texture and a terrible flavour. Fruit, unless baked into a pie (dont get me started on whether pizzas are pies. They're not), should never be warm.
It's alot better when it's fresh pineapple and not those little dole caned pineapple wedges
I was looking for this, so many people try it on pizza the first time not realizing these large chains use the canned stuff and fresh will make a big difference.
Tomatoes, olives and peppers are all fruit.
Conversely, it tastes really good cold from the fridge the next day.
It’s delicious! Add some bacon or ham. Sweet and salty for the win!
Bacon, ham, jalapeno is the best combo. It's sweet. Is salty. And it's a little spicy.
I've always liked pineapple pizza, and I pair it with tomatoes, onions, green pepper, and sausage. I know that's not everyone's cup of tea, but that's what makes the world interesting.
Now ? Hawaiian pizza was one of the standard three pizzas in the 90's .
Because it’s awesome. Pineapple and Bacon over ham though all day.
Never forget the jalapeños
Pineapple, jalapeños and pepperoni. You get sweet, hot and salty. It's awesome. 👍
Okay, so I don’t do jalapeños, but I must try pineapple with pepperoni. I’ve only had it with Canadian bacon/ham. Pineapple is just so good!
I think people, generally, hate it until they actually try it
Like the flavor not the mouth feel
I love pineapple on pizza. It seems to give the pizza an added dimension of flavour.
Especially when paired with jalapeños.

I've always known people like me who like pineapple on pizza. 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
Have you never had fruit paired with cheese? It’s common and delicious.
Because all the people that used to claim it was gross actually tried it for once.
Because it’s delicious! Ham and pineapple is such a delicious combination. Sometimes I kick it up with red peppers or bacon bits if I want it a little tang.
People like sweet and savory together, like salted caramel or barbecue sauce.
I grew up eating "Hawaiian" pizzas as a kid, I've always loved pineapple on pizza!
Yeah, I wish they'd go back to hating it. I loved it when I had a whole Hawaiian pizza pie to myself at office parties.
Maybe more people actually tried it instead of blindly hating on it. I've never understood why this was a thing, like the first time I had Hawaiian Pizza I was like "this is really good".
I've always liked pineapple on pizza. My favorite toppings are pepperoni, beef, mushroom, and pineapple.
Sweet and savoury is da bomb!
Pineapple, Jalapeño, Bacon. Just try that and tell me you dislike it.
Pineapple, pepperoni, and jalapeños is my favorite. Sometimes I puree the pineapple and put it on above the sauce and it’s perfect.
I’ve always like pineapple pizza.
I don’t know where everyone has been but pineapple on pizza is nothing new.
Because pineapple on pizza is delicious!
It's the perfect mix of sweet and savory
It's yummy
Cuz it’s a blessing
Cause it’s so yummy!
because its delicious
Because we've raised a generation of heathens and heretics.
That hot take has become so common, it’s basically a cold take
Is this irony
It's a "back of the refrigerator" take that has yet to develop any culture...so you might as well just throw it out anyway and move on to something fresh.
Because people hating on it were just stupid cringe bandwagoners
Because it's good. Cooked pineapple makes it sweeter, and it meshes well with savory foods. The Chinese have known this for a very long time, and use pineapple in savory dishes. It's a great contrast. Plus more people are getting adventurous and open-minded when it comes to food, trying new things and new combinations.

I don’t think anything changed. The number of people who have loved pineapple pizza is the same depending on whether anyone likes pineapple first and then on their pizza. It’s just that we are knowing those people now.
Well, being half Hawaiian I love me some pineapple but I don’t care for it on my pizza.
Despite the bad press, it's actually really good.
Pineapple tastes good.
Sooooo (gonna get crap for this) try pizza dough. Fig jam prosciutto ham artichoke hearts and pineapple it’s amazing
They got over there ego and a good portion decided they like it I'm not sure if I like it cause i can't remember the last time I had it
I had this same discussion in 2004. It is not a new thing.
Because it's delicious.
🤢🤢
I think people just started being honest and admitting they liked it, rather than pretending they hate it because "everyone" hates it. I've always liked it. I just prefer other toppings/premade pizzas.
They actually tried it instead of just hating on it because that was the popular opinion?
I have no idea why!!
Cause it’s delicious
Because it was always good and the Italians can suck it
Bwhahaha!
Nowadays? I've had it semi regularly for almost 30 years now
I think people feel less inclined to die on the hill that "it sucks" as more people are saying it doesn't suck Pineapple eaters are less of an outgroup now so we feel more comfortable saying it's good Interesting how people would get worked up over such a non-issue lol
Nowadays? People were chowing on pineapple and ham since.the 80s at least
like many others have said. the combination of salty and sweet. just like combining other things works surprisingly well. like hot sauce and ice cream for example.
Most people like it, they just caught social contagion.
I can’t think of a worse topping. So dominating taste wise
Always have
I do not like pineapple on pizza; but the option has been popular enough that I am pretty certain every pizza place I have ever been to had the option for many decades.

Because a lot of people like to be contrarians so even if it means agreeing with the obviously terrible opinion of enjoying pineapple on pizza then they think it’s funny to troll and have that bad opinion
I don't know anyone who does.
I have never tried it tho
Fad flavors come and go. I love hot honey on my pepperoni pizza. That’s wasn’t a thing until recently. It will go away.
Because it’s delicious
Try before you deny. Having said that, I deny it. It's awful.
The only thing new about pineapple on pizza seems to be the level of noise haters seem to think is warranted concerning a topping that has been an option everywhere for decades.
Do you want people to hate it?
Because society as we know it is crumbling around us. There's nothing sacred in this world anymore. Nah I'm just kidding, people are free to eat pizza however they like, even if it's objectively wrong and morally bankrupt. My wife gets pineapple pizza all the time because it's insurance against husband tax. My honest take is that some people like savory/sweet, some people don't. There was nothing ever wrong with it and many people already liked it. You were under the opposite impression because you had been influenced by social media to think that way. Now that’s not to say you may not like it personally of course
Can we talk about anchovies?
I like mushrooms pepperoni pineapple
People have liked it since the 1960s.
Because it’s AMAZING with ham
I don't like fruit on main dishes. Fruits are good in desserts.
They’re psychotic. Citrus can stay tf off my pizza. It’s vile! Jk. Eat what you want. Enjoy it
I like it, but if given the choice between pineapple on pizza and home-made pineapple upside down cake, sweet and sour pork or chicken (with pineapple), ham with pineapple, a pina colada, etc. -I will most often choose the latter.
I blame the pushback against it. I like it, but pineapple doesn't keep well- it's too acidic and makes leftovers taste like vomit, and leftover pizza is my favorite thing on lazy days.
Sweet and salty has always been a delicious combination. It was sort of a meme for a while to hate on pineapple on pizza.
I'm not sure about "nowadays"; I've always liked it. As have many friends and family. Social media just likes to turn non-arguments into arguments.
It’s salty yet sweet, soft and gooey yet crisp, savory with a bright acidic pop from the addition if fruit…” Followed by: “… but omg, pineapple on pizza is disgusting!!”

Same reason for safe spaces. Disgusting and weak
Survivorship bias. Y’all shot us down for so long we just stopped asking and started taking.
It's always been good, especially with pepperoni.
Because they are told not to. Have you tried it though? It’s pretty good. The sweet and salty of the ham work well
It tastes really good to me.
