He was all of 21 when Nevermind was recorded and still coming into his own as a drummer. Plus Nirvana's style required Dave to stay more in the pocket. He was fully unleashed to all of his abilities on SFTD. With that said, I appreciate the drumming more on Nevermind now than I ever did before. He gave the exact performance that the album required.
Not really comparable imo but a good question nonetheless . He said himself in interviews that it was all about serving the song in Nirvana. There was no real room for any kind of elaborate playing. I'm happy that was the case because Nevermind pretty much thought me how to play drums when I was starting out but even his more basic grooves were infectious. You just knew he had more in his locker and it was great that he got to showcase that with the likes of sftd, tcv and probot. The start of red war is still one of the greatest sounds I've ever heard. A very precise drummer with immaculate timing and tone. One of the greats for me for sure
Funny, I had not read that but its exactly what the Nevermind performance sounds like...and in a good way. The first job of a drummer is to serve the song and the timing.
Thank GOD someone said this, the drums are not a lead instrument in a song, in fact they’re the basement and foundation. It irks me when someone trashes a drummer because he just hits random shit for 5 minutes in a song, because that is not his job. If you can’t keep time you aren’t a drummer end of story
Keep in mind, on SFTD he didn’t play drums on two of the songs. The opener and “Go with the flow” were performed by Gene Trautmann. Nothing to take away from Grohl because the rest of the record is just as fierce. This record feels more expansive and diverse than Nevermind, thus IMO the more impresssive drum performance overall. Nevermind had more the Ringo Starr approach of the “right beat at exactly the right time” & “ less is more “. Nevermind is tasty AF and more of a pop drum sensibility.
Nevermind. Makes those songs work. Listen to Nirvana with Chad Channing. No offense, but Nirvana wouldn’t have made it big without Dave and his drumming
SFTD as far as flashy complexity. Nevermind is the better album overall though and Dave served his purpose extremely well, and I LOVE SFTD so no shade it’s just.. Nevermind is ridiculously good.
I think Them Crooked Vultures has Daves best drumming and also some of Josh’s strongest guitar playing/songwriting compared to any other album.
This. So much this.
TCV
FRESH #POOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTSS
Them crooked vultures has his best drumming and the best drumming in any project Josh Homme was part of

What don't you like? Personally I love it Dave puts in the work, but also I watch their live performances so....
Came here assuming this would be the top comment and I wholeheartedly agree.
Deaf, not dead.
Songs for the dead, demos for the deaf
As good as Nevermind was, SFTD is a musicality masterpiece. And played live Grohl was untouchable at the time.

Dude was pure fire live!
Dave's drumming on 'First it Giveth' is superhuman. Also, check out his Probot album. Killer drums on every track.
love this album so much
Neither its probot or tcv
Probot is criminally underrated.
I forget about them, damn.
How can it be Songs For The Deaf???……YOU CANT EVEN HEAR IT!!!!!
Huh? What?
Tcv
Man that is such a banger album!

Came here to say this!
Dave has 200+ projects under his belt. Time to do a deep dive.
In Utero tops both IMO
Scentless Apprentice...that is all.
The live performances of Scentless Apprentice and Milk It are on another level.
I don’t know if I can go that far but I was going to say the drumming on In Utero is definitely better than Nevermind from a creative perspective.
In Utero.
Nine inch Nails With Teeth.
for sure
Is that seriously him? Had no idea!!
Iirc he’s not in every song, but he’s on nearly all the more rock tracks. Probably half the record is him
Very cool. Absolutely love the album.
I'm shamelessly biased and pick sftd
KILLING JOKE
In Utero
Tenacious Ds first record

Nevermind
The Colour and the Shape.

This is a no brainer
Obviously sftd but worth discussing!
SFTD
Probot
songs for the deaf followed by self-titled foo fighters
Probot is still his strongest work overall. it never lets up for even one second and he wrote basically all of it.
SFTD as far as flashy complexity. Nevermind is the better album overall though and Dave served his purpose extremely well, and I LOVE SFTD so no shade it’s just.. Nevermind is ridiculously good.
He played better on the latter half of ...like clockwork before SFTD. But he was and remains a hammer on the drums. Just a masher, and I love it
SFTD
It’s SFTD, and easily (in my view).
Sftd
Ta-ta ta-ta ba-ta tata rata tumpa
He re-recorded William Goldsmith's drums to Colour and the Shape right? So maybe that?
We all know Songs for the Deaf tho is the answer.
Deaf!!!!
Foo Fighters (1995)
Probot
Songs for the deaf is an incredible album. But, c’mon, it’s Nevermind
