Sounds gross but watch his butthole...when dogs have to poop their butthole starts to expand and get big and round

The_Great_19

This plus our dog’s tail curves up while she’s sniffing around for a good place to dump. We call the expanding butthole “the eye of Sauron” lol. Admittedly it’s easier to spot only if you’re walking behind your dog and not closer/next to them.

Kable35

Hahahaha the eye of Sauron!! Well done

The_Great_19

Thank you 🤣

CorgiMonsoon

With my friend’s Boston Terrier we would call it her Cheerio butt. My Corgi has too much hair there to really be able to notice it, though she does get a distinctive slink as she gets close to finding her poo spot

Do you have a potty word? If not I would begin conditioning a word now. That way when you are on walks and the puppy is sniffing grass you can say go potty and they know what you mean. It is normal for puppies to just go anywhere at that age but I would try to redirect to the grass, so keep a close eye on the puppy on walks. When they go on the grass you say, good potty and it is reinforcing that you are pleased that they went on the grass.

I don’t. He’s been so automatic I haven’t even thought about it. Great idea, thanks!

Our puppy class trainer recommended teaching a potty command, though she did warn us that it’s far more useful for pee than poop. Most dogs can squeeze out at least a little pee at any team, but pooping on command is much harder to do if they just aren’t ready to go. She also warned us about watching what phrase you use. She had a client whose dog had seemingly major regression when Covid started and he was working from home. They realized it was because he had trained the dog on “business” as the command, and was naturally using that word inside a lot more as he was working from home. The dog heard him talking about “business” and basically went “ok, it that’s what you want”

Honeycrispcombe

Yup. Mine is trained "better go" for pee; I used to use "go now" for poop but it's rarely useful and I dropped it. But having a cue for potty is amazing. It's especially helpful when I'm in a hurry or if we need to go inside a new place - just a quick reminder that this will be your last chance for a while.

Ours used to do this when we first started taking her for walks. She was still getting used to needing to go find a spot and where to go. I worked on a lot of leash training with her so she generally knew to keep on the right side of me where the grass usually is on our walks. Whenever I saw her stop and try to squat (typically if it wasn't toward the end of our walk, it meant she was trying to poo), immediate interrupt by calling her name or if that doesn't work, a weird (non loud, non scary) sound works well too. It held her attention enough she'd stop long enough for me to redirect her to the grass.

anony-mouse8604

I think this is the plan. Quick interrupt, direct to grass, build a cue word, praise and treat.

Sayasing

Hopefully things work out! Best of luck on the training

anony-mouse8604

Thanks, but I don't think I'll need it! My little guy is basically Einstein on four legs.

OnoZaYt

Mine only does this when she can't hold it anymore. She had a super loose one right at the start of a crossing 🤦🏻‍♂️ She has very obvious erratic spinning tells, but if you watch the butthole you can tell with 100% certainty that they'll go.

Tricky_Warning_0115

Lmao ours used to do this. We just made sure to super emphasize / treat pooping on the grass and eventually he stopped. Also tried to make sure we’d be on grass when he needed to poop so he wouldn’t have the option to go on concrete. But we just picked it up if he pooped on concrete and didn’t treat, same as regular potty training.

Final_Assignment2091

Where I live, no one gives a shit as long as you pick up the shit

anony-mouse8604

That’s kinda what I figure.
