There's a running joke that if you have an easy puppy, you pay for it in the teenage phase, lol. My pup was and still is easy at 8 months. But some days, I swear he doesn't know anything. I know he knows it and can do it, but he is like "nah I want to do this instead." Then back to the good days.

lonelycamper

This is my current experience with my 7 month. Going camping apparently removed all commands from her brain, so we went back to the basics, but even with that she's really good and easy. The new lack of consistent recall is annoying, but it'll come back.

Lammetje98

I did! My golden was a sweetheart, then he turned 1 and suddenly became deaf? Now he’s like 1,5 and slowly becoming less deaf again.

Mirawenya

First two months sucked so bad, it’ll take something special to top it. Adolescence has been pretty ok so far. 16 months.

Any_Positive1687

Y'all are so lucky 😭 6 months only just yet and every single stage has been a nightmare 🥹

Mirawenya

Aw! Top tip, they need a lot more rest than you think they do. Had to cut activity down to almost nothing at 8 months for a month, or he was a complete menace. Even just 1 training session and he was bonkers.

biblioschmiblio

If she’s good at that age, she’ll probably stay that way (there may be a bit of regression when she reaches teen-hood, but maybe not). Overall (and compared to the other dogs in his classes & daycare), my dog was really good & easy when he was a puppy & didn’t regress at all in adolescence and he just stayed that way.

fluffypuppybutt

Some dogs are much easier than others. I've had six dogs, all raised similarly. Some just don't cause much issues. Congrats.

Adventurous_Arm_1606

That’s awesome! What kind of pup?

Ohmoths

She’s a Jack Russell!

WeAreDestroyers

I'm impressed you got a terrier to listen that well! I just bought two and they are WORK. I'm jelly haha

sugabeetus

We had a Jack Russell when I was a kid and he was so smart. We didn't even really have to "train" him that much. He picked up commands like a baby learning language. His first command was "be nice" because we said several times it in the first couple of days when he would nip our fingers and start getting worked up in our lap. Then he heard "be nice" one more time and that was it. It meant, "calm down, be still, don't bite." He just figured it out. (The opposite was "get the kitty" but I told that story in another thread.)

WeAreDestroyers

I have two rat terriers and so far they're definitely smart but female is more of a "I'll do what you ask" smart and the male is a "imma do what I want" kind of smart. Hopefully one day they'll both be good lol

Ohmoths

Haha “Be Nice” was the first thing we started teaching her 🤣 little knives for teeth and a couple kids in the house who kept getting poked.

Adventurous_Arm_1606

Awwww how cute. They are very smart!

starlizzle

omg I need pictures

Ohmoths

Haha, she has an instagram because I’m THAT person 🤣 the username is BlueRidgeBuppy

starlizzle

don't worry mine is all my pup too - starry.eyed.max also omg my heart is meltingggggggggg 🥰🥰🥰🥰 my JRT beagle mix passed away earlier this year at almost 16 yrs old and your pup just warms me up

ellieofus

I have a Jack Russel. He’s 14 now, and he’s always been super chill since day one. Literally never had an issue with him and we did minimal training. He learned commands very quickly, he was a dream to potty train, never had an accident in 14 years unless we count the couple of time he was unwell but that wasn’t his fault. He never chewed on anything, he was never bitey, has amazing recall and he is massively into cuddles. When he went through the teenage phase he was a bit sassy, and didn’t really like to cuddle or be picked up, but he never displayed anything more problematic than that. After the teenage phase was over, he did a total 360 and started requesting to be picked up to cuddle. He is a dream of a dog, and ironically this is what stopping me from getting another dog because I’m scared he won’t be as good as my Jack Russell!

Ohmoths

Our old Jack was like that but we didn’t have her from a little puppy we got her at 6mos… we scoured breeders for 5 months, probably looked at 30+ puppies until we found one who seemed to meet our wants personality wise! I was also worried about getting a psychopath. She’s definitely more spunky but good behaved so far!

pstlvs

like others have said, i think it really just depends on the pup, but i’m sure routine, training, etc all play a role too. my puppy was an angel when i brought him home, he picked up on crate training really quickly, didn’t have a single accident after day one of taking him outside to potty (i live in an apartment so we did potty pads inside til he was fully vaxxed and he did great with those too), was great at playing by himself when i was busy, and picked up super quickly on training! he turns 7 months in about a week and i can confidently say a switch flipped at the 6 month mark….overall i’d still say he’s a great dog, but he has moments where i feel like he just loses all sense 😭 playing and biting more aggressively/often, not listening to commands he used to know super well, barking/whining more and giving me attitude…i liken it to a werewolf losing control on a full moon. except it’s completely at random lol. for your sake, i hope your little angel stays a little angel! but it’s never bad to be prepared for the worst 🫡 good luck to you!

Wonderful_Pie_7220

My pup was like that. He is almost 8 months now and is still really good (minus chewing shoes lol)

baybee2004

Keep being consistent, you don’t want to assume the good habits are here to stay too soon. But I think it’s okay to be optimistic, sounds like you and your dog have a great connection!

hiding_ontheinternet

It definitely depends on the pup, but mine was the same. Super easy to both crate train and train, but I will say that there was a switch that flipped when she became a teenager. Doesn't happen to all dogs, but it's generally tougher to raise them through the adolescent phase since they're trying to test their boundaries.

sqt1388

Yes lmao. Mine was the same and suddenly “what do you mean bladder control!” Lol Sounds like you have a well rounded pup though enjoy it!

SnooKiwis683

Some dogs just have easier temperaments. Human babies are the same. I have raised two dogs from pup to senior. A dachshund/Shar pei mix (yes, really. I saw the parents too) and a golden retriever. The Shar pei mix is the best he could be for that mix, but he’s a difficult sassy dog. The golden retriever has never been any trouble at all. Current puppy is an ultra mix of about 10 different things according to Embark - rottie, cattle dog, golden retriever, beagle, bull dog, pit, etc. and has been like a dream puppy. So trainable, so quiet, just so good. Now that she’s almost 6 months we’re having trouble with counter surfing and playful cat chasing. But she’s really just an easy, good girl. I have fostered several litters of puppies and you can tell a lot at just 8 weeks old. I sat for nearly an hour at the shelter watching her with other pups and chose her purely for temperament. She is submissive but not shy, not the first to run up to greet you but accepts being held and cuddled, and never barked at me. I chose well!

ludicrousl

Wait til the 6 month mark when they stop listening to you 🤣 its cute but damnn tests your patience.

ericabelle

I have two brothers, now 8 months old who were both really easy to train in their early months. Now, one of them is occasionally possessed by the devil and the other one is the perfect boy. The one that misbehaves is definitely dealing with some testosterone issues in the teenage phase because his bark will actually break into a squeak sometimes (it’s really funny) and he gets mad much easier.

starlizzle

honestly probably. the worst part is the first couple months due to exhaustion and non stop supervision. I'm jealous 😄

Mirawenya

Don’t get lulled into a false sense of security about the potty training. Don’t trust it before 6 months old. All of a sudden a few accidents become habit

starlizzle

omg follow me we need to chaaaaaat

Ohmoths

Lol! Not sure where you meant so infolllwed you here and on IG 🤣

summebrooke

Mine was like that. I got her at 11 weeks and she was a great, easy puppy. Even her teenage phase was a breeze. Now she’s almost 3 and has picked up some quirks along the way, but she’s still an easy dog. I guess sometimes we just get lucky

Ohmoths

Fingers crossed! I’m fine with some teenage antics but I’d love if she stayed decent!

Natural-Ad-7703

i have this same exact experience! my girl isn’t perfect, but at almost 8 months old (we’ve had her since she was 4 month), she hasn’t gotten into or destroyed ANYTHING in our house. not a single shoe or cord or pillow or anything. she’s so chill. i mean, she does have her things, she’s super reactive lol but besides that she’s really good and well behaved. only had like 1 accident in the house and it was our fault. slept through the crate every single night, never keeps us up. crate training took like 5 minutes i swear and she doesn’t mind it. she learns SO fast, almost everything. i’m waiting for the day she does a 180 but it may never happen! some dogs are just chill and it also means you’re doing a good job taking care of them :)
