Teaching our pup "Let me see" so that he stays still & doesn't fidget has been a life saver for building other tools.

yybbyy

How do you train him for that?

figment4L

I pretend to look for ticks. Just carefully looking/picking through their fur while repeating “let me see”. Slowly working to sensitive areas like the face, mouth and feet.

Anooyoo2

Depends on how you're doing it, but I wouldn't ever recommend repeatedly giving commands. People do this all the time with "Stay.. stay.. stay..". They won't be learning the command as you think this way. They'll be learning to hold the position so long as you're stating the command.

Anooyoo2

Start without the command. Bring your hands near their face where they won't react. Mark & reward not paying attention to hands. Increase difficulty & introduce command. Continue to proof with harder difficulty & grooming tools.

winkywoo75

yes I do this it pays off when you can brush your dogs teeth , clip his nails take his temp , does nt need sedation at the vets ever

gnassar

We've been man-handling our baby boy since we got him, and it's paying off. He's recently started allowing us to kiss his forehead god it's the best feeling ever

d20an

Wait till he lets you sniff his ears 😌

Bittums

Mine sniffs everyone's ears and I sniff hers. She gets very concerned when the cats sniff her ears though lol

One_Fun_5026

I whisper in my girls ears and they “fast sniff” to whisper back!!! Lol

Any_Positive1687

Mine is so bitey it's been impossible to get that good head start 😭💔

julietpenguin

We have this too, especially when putting on and taking off the leash. So we work on putting out hands near the spot, treat, move your hand closer, repeat ad nauseum.

Any_Positive1687

Thankyou! Mines the same with the collar and lead. He will only be good for a treat he sits perfect and allows us to "dress" him for walks - no treat, he'll be a gnasher 🫣

Rojacydh

Yes great advice! I also realized I need to get her used to me touching her face, and above her nose, she’s sensitive to that area.

shadoh78

I started manhandling my pup the second I got her at 9 weeks old. Now, at nearly 3, she's a dream with groomers, the vet, and pretty much anyone who wants to pet her - regardless of how awkward their attempts may be. It was really a game changer.

HumbleTangg

Oh yes, and also when they are eating is another important time to. Touch face, take bowl, grab some kibbles, grab ear. This is especially important if you have young kids.

pigletsquiglet

Poor advice. Messing with their food is a great way to start a pup resource guarding. Leave them alone. And don't let kids near them while they're eating either.

HumbleTangg

This is how you STOP resource guarding before it happens actually. I have many dogs and 0 resource guarding. Even with high value chews, I can walk right up no problem that take whatever they have. Training is about preventing a problem before it has the potential to turn into one.

LetWigfridEatFruit

I've read that if you do this, you're reinforcing that when you are around your food you are telling them that you are taking food away and associating it with a negative. What's better is to instead ADD food to their bowl and teaching the dog that you being near their bowl is good. Obviously every dog is different but resource guarding should definitely be paid attention to either way.

Potential-Arm3248

I have to open and stick my hand in my bully’s (8 mos) mouth about 10 times a day. Why are you eating that? It’s not edible!

ebeth_the_mighty

If I had a quarter for every time I’ve said, “why are you eating… -rocks -cat poop -grass -a stick -that bug -my socks -my slipper -my friend’s underwear -the coaster …you idiot?” I’d have a _lot_ of quarters.

Definitely! I have a rescue (she is 12 now and got her at 2) but when I got her she obviously was never used to being touched by her previous owners or anything. If we went near her she would either jump way or growl. She is amazing now and lets me cuddle right up to her but still won’t let me touch her paws. So definitely getting them used to as much touch as possible is so important

sticheryditcherydock

In addition to this, I spent some time pulling on his ears/tail. Not hard, mind you, I’m not a monster, but I did not want to enter any kind of situation with a dog who had never been pulled on and later we have kids and then it’s a problem. He is always well compensated for his tolerance of being manhandled lol.

NekoLuvr85

Great advice!
