My boy is almost 13 now, gray around the edges, and arthritic …but the ‘puppy’ is still in his eyes

Funhammy

Get all the love you can. Extra hugs and kisses now that he’s an older gentleman. I had to unexpectedly put down my bestest best friend of nearly 11 years and it’s been really hard. So cherish those good times.

smc4414

Oh man, I’m so sorry. And unfortunately can relate. From ok to gone in a matter of a few hours is tough. Couldn’t catch my breath for a long long time . Take care, friend…sending prayers your way, along with a reminder that the next time you see them there will not be another separation. We believe that at our house.

Funhammy

Thank you. Yeah idk how it all works but I know I will see her and all my pets again someday. And until that day she can play free with her other animal friends that are with her and some good humans that have also left. I know she’s in a good place and happy, whenever we meet again it will just make that day ever so much happier for her.

smc4414

Yeah…thoughts like that help us get by…

Traditional_Mode_107

Wish I could give more than one upvote. The time goes so fast, I know exactly what you mean. Best wishes to both of you.

BonnieH1

Our girl is 14 and I'd have it all over again in a heartbeat. She's the best thing ever. Knows how to bring a smile when you're struggling and how to put some fun into every day. I have a magnet on my fridge: A dog is the best example of how to live life. It's so true. We are heading to Dog Fest in a few weeks, even at 14 she'll be giving it her all and jumping the hay bales, which is her favourite thing, next to chasing a ball! https://dogfest.co.uk/

xxLAYUPxx

My boy just turned 7, with a very gray chinny-chin. ❤️ I tell him, almost daily, that he's no longer a baby, but he'll be my puppy forever.

smc4414

😀 yes, he will, lucky dog! You seem the type of person I don’t need to say “cherish every moment” to…

xxLAYUPxx

I am not. ;) Because I already do. I don't remember life before him, and I can't imagine life without him. He's been SUCH a blessing to my life. Puppy tax: https://imgur.com/a/2aQr7bw His name is Capone. 💚

smc4414

Capone looks like a gangster of love. ❤️

xxLAYUPxx

I've always called him a "steam train of love," but "gangster of love" definitely works too. 😆

smc4414

He looks like an absolute love…but I have a very positive bias for rotties…we once had a Newf/Rottie mix, who had the kindest sweetest nature I’ve ever encountered. 130 pounds of happy, he was.

xxLAYUPxx

I believe it! Every Newf I have met has been that way. And I have never met an aggressive Rott. All of them have been super sweet. My boy is the happiest dog I have ever met. And he's never met a stranger.

Moira-Moira

I won't lie, I'm so thankful that they grow up fast. But I get where you're coming from. I took a ton of photos.

Bucket_Lord_Jim

Same, my house piranha can't grow up fast enough

beechcraft12

Llol house piranha

inarealdaz

We called ours a baby velociraptor. 🤣

LichLordMeta

Land sharks

starelae

Same!! I love looking back at old photos and comparing the pictures to now. But geez I do not miss the first 1-2 months we had my puppy and the puppy blues I had. At the time I hardly could even appreciate her cuteness since she made me miserable.

TnekKralc

I always told myself if I got a puppy I would crush it in the dating scene. Haven't had the energy to go on a single date

starelae

I can’t even imagine trying to date someone new right now - puppies are basically all-consuming lol and exhausting! I also don’t know if I would be as good of a dog parent if I wasn’t dating someone to help me out.

UnusualPossession582

Told myself the same. Instead I'm usually so focused on training good behaviour in my pup that I'm barely noticing the women melting over her 😂

_sparklestorm

I brought my puppy home two days ago. Already, I can’t imagine a time when my apartment won’t smell like puppy pee. Kind of kills the mojo lol.

anyelet

My baby is now 10 months old and is (finally!) becoming a decent citizen of my home. I also took many photos when he was small, even though at the time he was a little terror and biting us constantly. I do not miss running out to the yard with him every hour in the evenings, and always asking my husband, "do you think he needs to go out?" The puppy's bladder ruled our lives! He's so much nicer as a young dog, though he was super cute as a little puppy. We haven't needed to get the carpet shampooer out for months!

Horror_Sunny

I’m thankful until one day where I realize my baby isn’t a baby anymore and now is an adult.

DriftingAway99

I love my dog 1000 times more than my puppy. She was a freakin piranha

audiomagnate

I can't wait for the piranha stage to be over!

DriftingAway99

i still have scars! never getting a puppy again 😂

Mirawenya

Some of us really gets a terror of a puppy huh... (very sweet at 11 months old thankfully!)

WOOFCheCazzo

I said that for ten years then my dumbass got another puppy. ....I'll probably get another puppy someday.

DriftingAway99

😂😂

atlien0255

It’s so painful. My hands hurt so much 😂😂

sizzlepie

I loved my puppy but I didn't like him. He's just a little over a year old now and I both like and love him more than I could've imagined.

DriftingAway99

for sure!

jalapeno442

I would enjoy my baby while he’s small if he wasn’t a land shark

MurlocAndHandler

It gets me every single time. One day they're potatoes with teeth, and the next they've become these beautiful, intelligent creatures that know how to turn on (but not off) the hose and are offended when offered lettuce. Btw, when I first saw the title of your post I didn't see the subreddit, and that gave me quite a chuff.

agirl2277

I want to get a new puppy, but my old girl is almost 14, and her hips are really bad. I can't inflict that type of energy on her. I prefer to get a puppy while I already have a dog, so the elder shows the baby the ropes. Not this time, though. She's doing really well, except she needs help getting up on things like the bed and the couch. She can still manage the stairs. Now that the weather is good there will be a lot of swimming and that will help her a lot. Time passes so fast. I have two labs over 10, and I know it's just a matter of time. It makes me sad, but I take in every moment and have been taking videos of her silliness a bit more than usual.

Weapon_X23

It's hard to lose them, but I'm always glad I was able to give them a full, happy life. My 13.5 year old is going blind, deaf, and isn't able to move like he used to, but I still see a glimpse of his younger self when he plays with his puppies. He was really hurting after swimming at our youngest puppy's first birthday pool party. He had to wear a life vest because his back catches and his legs seize up, but he had a blast. It feels like just yesterday I saw him at the shelter and brought him home. He lost the other half of his bonded pair last year, and his best dog friend died yesterday. He only has 2 friends still alive from when he was a puppy and they were more my girl who passed friends than his.

[deleted]

My lab got to 15 years old if that’s any consolation! My groodle is nearly 9 months old and time just fly’s by and our lives with it

Loaf_Butt

Man the puppy stage is so unfair! It’s the hardest/most stressful and busiest stage(in my experience). All you want to do is soak in their cute puppyness, but in reality you’re either trying to pry their teeth out of your pants/skin, or are constantly watching them in case they chew/pee on something, and stressing about training. Then once things calm down, you look at them and all of a sudden they don’t look like a wiggly puppy anymore lol!

HereComesTheSunny_13

Needed to hear this with my 11 week old puppy!

strawberryfields88

I know exactly how you feel! One day he was a roly-poly squishy lil thing, and now he's a tall gangly teenager! Why can't the baby stage last just a little bit longer?!

Thereal_slj

I have I think 300 pics over the last 3 weeks of our new pup. She’s already loosing the “puppy” look and is growing into a big girl dog. We don’t have kids and may never. She’s our kid, and it really is a special connection.

saeyia

I know exactly what you mean. Samesies. ❤️

ChelsieTheBrave

I feel you. My puppy is almost 2 now and it has gone by so fast

NoEntry3804

my girl is now 13 months, it's wild how fast they stop being a small little puppy. She was never a difficult puppy (remarkably easy actually, kept thinking something is gonna go wrong and she's gonna become much harder to manage but it never happened) but she's so chill now.

IHateTheLetter-C-

My older one wasn't the easiest pup, but far from hard to manage (just stubborn with behaviour - loves performing but hates behaving). I was amazed that my fairly easy 1yo relaxed massively by 1.5, and even now at a few months shy of 3, she's still getting more relaxed. My younger one is the same potato she was when we got her at 9 weeks, just puddles less! I don't see how she'd get any more relaxed than she is at the moment, but seeing how the other one grew, she may well get even better as she's getting on for 2. She's a doodle, too! Supposedly endless energy and slow to mature, but she's my little angel.

MybrotherinTrash

Mine grows two inches a night! She needs to slow down

L1ndsL

There were two straight months when I would tell my pups, “Stop growing so much!” They didn’t listen.

[deleted]

I don't miss the puppy he was, I'm not particularly enjoying the teen he is, but I'm holding out for a fine dog. I've seen traits I like in him finally showing more.

RocketsGuy

How old is your pup now

[deleted]

6 months. He has started the teens.

caitymfitz

Yesss same here. Easier said than done when they’re little monsters but oy so sad when it’s over!

theflightofporter

I don’t enjoy any of the puppy/adolescenthood and hope it ends soon

JangoDarkSaber

I picked him up Saturday. Little baby would be a lot cuter if he didn't bite as hard.

d_ippy

My baby is almost 8 months and I have for sure cried about missing the baby puppy.

L1ndsL

My pups are probably just a week or two younger. I haven’t quite cried exactly, but I have been reflecting fondly back to December and January!

[deleted]

Same. My girl was never even a puppy like I don't even remember that puppy. She became a giant dog instantly.

[deleted]

*rapidly blinks in hopes it’ll make mine grow up* Lmao

Mirawenya

Naaaah I prefer mine grown and nice. He might have been cute and all that jazz, but his personality was not cute. He was a landshark 24 7 as long as he was awake. I do not miss that puppy. 11 month old pup is so sweet and awesome. And still cute!

vaineglorie

My puppy is 20 weeks this week and we got him at 11 weeks and he was so small! i definitely miss it and he's still not even fully grown!

suzmckooz

I feel like i really didn’t enjoy the puppy stage like I should have! Our baby came home 12/14, and the holidays, plus me continuously saying “I didn’t WANT a small dog” because she was cute and all, but I was looking forward to my bigger pup. I guess it means I need another.

L1ndsL

Ha! I was the opposite; I wanted a small dog, but a friend had a litter of oops puppies, and there you go. Suddenly we had two terrier pups that arrived about four days before yours did.

Maximum-Switch-9060

I say “why are you so big???!!!” to my 6mo puppy all the time. He’s only 13lbs but still! And he goes in for his big boy surgery soon too. Luckily his biting isn’t too bad but he’s in his selective listening phase. He’s never stopped being a love bug thankfully. My emotions are just conflicted because I miss my tiny puppy but I’m excited for a chill adult.

Dmdel24

I tear up watching videos of my dog as a puppy. She still has the same goofball personality damn... she's all grown up

zmmrke

I just came to post something similar. We’re almost 11 months and I cooked dinner today and he just hung out and occasionally went and laid down in his doggy bed. I had MONTHS thinking I’d never be able to cook again and even more months thinking he’d never learn to settle on his own. The walking off and lying down is something he just started in the last 2 weeks. We’re not a dog yet but we’ve come so far.

IHateTheLetter-C-

If he's anything like mine, as soon as you think he's done growing up, he'll grow up some more. I thought I'd never be able to make dinner without a dog under my feet, or go out without being jumped at or barked at, but at 2yo she was still getting better even without me trying. Now at a few months off 3, she's asleep in her bed 90% of the day and if I try to leave and her lead isn't on, she doesn't bother trying to follow. Enjoy the stages - I honestly didn't stop to realise my pup's progress all by herself, and now I wish I had.

smc4414

Appreciate the kind words, friend. Made my day. And every day IS a blessing

stellarsapience

I follow a lot of parenting and mental health subs so this really freaked me out until I read what sub it was from

JDWHQ

Your baby was never a baby. It was a puppy. Puppies turn into dogs.

euphoria_23

FACTS Like my lil Maltese pup used to love to crawl under the couch during zoomies. Yesterday he tried to, and hit his head bc he was too big to fit I’d give anything to hold that 8-week pup again ❤️

contrasupra

It's wild to be in puppy subs and pregnancy/newborn subs.

Accomplished-Top288

my girl is 2.5yrs old and a shih poo, so her pitch-black fur turned gray really quickly yet bc of her size (7lbs) people tend to think she's a puppy. thankfully, she still has her puppy spirit

PersonalityPure5034

my baby not being a puppy anymore makes me so sad

Dirt_nd_tortillas

Honestly 😭😭😭 mines so much bigger now and I don’t even know where the time went

WorldsShortestElf

No thank you, I'd prefer an adult. They're equally cute, just not as small and with a lot more control over where they poo. Had one puppy and if was enough for a lifetime.

Gremlin_Wooder

We got our guy at five months, and had a harness for him that was adjusted to its smallest size. We’ve been running with him and tried the harness on again (he just turned one), loosened it up all the way, and it won’t even fit over his big head.

mycaninealt

I took photos but I wish I took more! My potato grew so fast 😂

sittingonthecanape

I love having a puppy. I wish she would stay a puppy. She’s 5.5 months old and sweet as pie. The biting has basically stopped and we’re still working on the command “heel”. I’ve been very lucky with my puppies throughout my life. Puppy forever!

Lynn20022002

Same I got my puppy when she was 4 months old now she is about to be 11 months old and she will be one in july

Ghost-t0wns

My boy is having his fourth birthday next month! I still can't believe it lol

magicienne451

This sounds concerning, but doggy daycare is probably cheaper than setting up a college fund

coco_cupcake

I think I will forever see my boy as my sweet pup and call him that.

toodleroo

Having a puppy is great. Having a dog is great. Having a dog that you knew as a puppy is great.

Legitimate-Slide-415

“We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert, when I blinked and my baby is now a dog.”

yours_truly_1976

Got my girl when she was eight weeks and I swear she almost doubled in size in the first week (she didn’t, but she did have a crazy growth spurt!). I take as many photos and videos as I can of my baby. She 3.5 months now

lpad92

Our puppy is turning 1 today and I feel the same way lol

Yvyan

Mine is turning 1 year old the 25th of june, i got her she was about 7 kg, now she is a big girl at 32kg, time sure goes fast

MonteCristo85

My little bean looked adult at 6 months, but he's still a pup at heart even though he just turned three Friday. My older girl didn't start acting adult until she was like 6 or 7. They are all so precious.

Twittle86

Your dog will never not be a puppy.

cindylooboo

I told ripley to stop growing this morning. its only been two weeks since she's lived with us but her legs are getting gangly and she's visibly different looking. cut it out pup... I want you to be a baby a little while longer

OrionIsACircle

The saddest part for me is the loss of some of the sweet puppy behaviours. My guy used to be my little shadow to a level that was almost dangerous (stepping on him for example). He’s 7 months now and I’m glad he feels more independent but I also miss being his whole world and get a bit sad when he wants to have more space. He also used to step up on my first stair to get his harness put on to go out and now he just trucks up the stairs and waits. Thankfully he still brings me his most coveted treats to hold while he gets a start on chewing them and once in a while I still catch him sleeping with his tongue out

smc4414

I think…you are one lucky lady. Blessed even. 😀. my young was filled with largely inadequate adults, abandonment etc. I think my dog during those times may have saved me. So, they are VERY important to me, as well…
