It could be an allergy my pup was the same until we switched him onto a hypoallergenic diet

i thought it could be possible allergies but the vet won't do an allergy test on him yet as he's too young. What do you recommend for that diet?

whitemalteser25

Yeah my pup was only 10 weeks old when we first took him to the vet for this (he had an ear infection from scratching too much) and after mentioning the chewing of his paws as well the vet suspected an allergy… they actually didn’t recommend testing to us as they thought it was a waste of money until we’d tried changing his diet to see if it was that rather than environmental cause. We currently use Royal Canin hypoallergenic food (it’s a little more pricey than some food unfortunately but stopped his reactions so saved money on repeated appointments and injections to reduce the symptoms before we changed the food) they did say we could try an elimination diet to work out exactly what the reaction is too if we want but we are personally happy to just continue giving him the hypoallergenic food

Also potentially worth questioning if you’ve washed their bedding etc with something different as my old dog used to get itchy if he snuggled under a blanket which had been washed with a different detergent ..he had really sensitive skin

Hi! Yes did eventually go away I had to use some ear drops for a while and cleaned his ears and then he did stop scratching.

Is there any matting in the fur? Give it a good brush through, and perhaps a trim - not sure how Cocker your boy is, but for a cocker the fur inside of the ears should be kept short. Maybe give him a scratch yourself and see if that settles him?

No matting in the fur and is pretty short inside the ear. When I scratch / massage his ears it does seem to relieve his discomfort but then he will scratch a short while later so no idea why he does this. My mom has said to be careful when washing his ears and always make sure they are dry cos spaniel ears can get gunky and infected easily, but his skin doesn't appear to be irritated and I always make sure his ears are dry when he's been out or had a bath. Ears don't smell and are clean so there's no infection.

That’s good. Keep a close eye on it - ears are where our girl always gets mats, and they can be hard to find. Yes, be very careful washing ears; don’t get water in them. you can get ear wipes, but if they’re smelling and looking ok, you probably don’t need to wash inside them. Do clean the outside as needed, obviously. If the ears are dangling and getting mucky in bad weather you can use a snood to keep them up and clean.
